So this one was okay for me. I found parts of it to be really slow. A decent, yet predictable read. I didn't hate it but I enjoyed some of her other books much more.
Thank you #netgalley and #bookouture.
As a fairly new fan of the author, I was looking forward to reading this book. I found it to be suspenseful and hard to put down. I always had to read that little bit further. I liked the different plots on the go at the same time. What impressed me was that none threatened to ruin the others until the inevitable clash. There were some good twists throughout that I didn’t see coming, and a couple which almost telegraphed their approach enough for Chris Rock to have had time to grab his crash helmet before Will walked onto that stage.
Maddy is escaping her violent ex Connor, so taking on a caretaker role in the Lake District hundreds of miles away made sense. I think she was the only character I liked. I didn’t know what to make of some of the characters though. I didn’t necessarily dislike the them, although Connor was clearly scum so I won’t spare him another word, and Maddy’s alleged best friend Stella proves to be a bad friend at best, and at worst she withheld information putting Maddy’s life in danger. No character felt superfluous, and they were all three dimensional, although one or two and their actions stretched credibility. My “suspension of disbelief” did take a mild battering.
I’ve seem some reviews criticising grammar or spelling. In fact the two examples I read of poor spelling used were actually proper English and quite correctly spelled. What I didn’t do was let anyone influence my personal experience of this book, which was one of enjoyment. Overall, I think this was a gripping read, which I’m happy to recommend to readers of thrillers and mysteries. I gave Lake View House, by Helen Phifer, four stars.
Maddy excepts a job as caretaker.
The house is in the middle of nowhere and is in
desperate need of renovation's. But Maddy doesn't care. She needs to get away from her life in London an ex boyfriend and to make a start on her second novel.
Slowly strange things start to happen. Eerie sounds in the middle of the night. The radio that turns itself on and only plays one type of music. The wet wedding dress that is left by the front door.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the creepy vibe and the idea of an old run down mansion that locals are afraid to go near.
The author knows how to create a spooky
atmospheric story that makes you wonder did you lock your front door.
I can't say to much without giving it away. But I will say that I did not see the ending coming.
Helen Phifer never fails!
A fantastic story with a slight supernatural feel
Mandy leaves an abusive relationship to look after an old manor house, but strange things happen. Did think I thought I knew who did it, so to speak, but the twist at the end totally shocked me.
I always enjoy reading Helen Phifer books as she is one heck of a great writer and this book certainly delivered.
Loved it!
Thank Thank you netgalley.
Lakeview House by Helen Phifer was an excellent read and I was hooked from the beginning till the end and I couldn't put it down, I love books like this and I have always found this with Helen's books, she has a way of bringing you into her books and having you hooked and wanting more. It has great twists and turns throughout and will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. A very enjoyable book.
I highly recommend this book I loved it.
Previously titled 'What Lies Beneath'. which came out in 2020.
Big Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Helen Phifer for my ARC of Lakeview House in exchange for an honest review
While trying to escape an abusive relationship, Maddy is talked into house sitting a mysterious lake house that hasn't been lived in for years. Maddy is determined to finish the book she is writing but disturbing incidents keep her from it. She isn't about to let somebody or something scare her away and with the help of a locals, she settles in.
The story kept me turning pages wondering what next and the book gave me chills. I've never read this author before but after reading this I ordered two of her books.
After the success of her first book, Maddie has a writer's block. Her other problem is Connor, her abusive boyfriend, whom she has walked out on.
Her friend Stella suggests she go away for a while and finish her book and get away from her ex as well. Maddie finds herself house sitting a almost dilapidated house overlooking the lake. But there is a killer in this place who is not too happy to find someone at the house. Meanwhile Connor manages to track down Maddie.
Loved the story and also the way the house is described, actually felt like going there.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC

Maddy is an author and when she gets a new opportunity to write her new story, she won't think twice before taking that chance.
Deciding to be a caretaker for an old house, she starts a journey in an unknown place. I would be scared to take those risks personally, but I think she was brave enough to get away from her abusive relationship and make herself disappear.
An old house will always have its stories to tell, and this one hides many more secrets than she can ever imagine.
The novel is gripping, with characters that made me root for them but also hate to no extent. Her ex boyfriend is despicable, her best friend is good but she could've been a better friend. Many twisted moments and secrets unveiled one by one in the end.
The last straw wasn't that wow for me and while the ending felt quite rushed; I enjoyed this book.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me an advance copy of this book to read in exchange for my honest review and opinion. WOW what a great, fast read! I had convinced myself that I knew what was going to happen but was wrong over and over again. Do yourself a big favor and add this to your TBR pile immediately!
Fleeing an abusive relationship writer Maddy takes refuge as a caretaker in a run down (soon to be restored) Lakeview House, avoided by the locals due to it's checked past, but not just a house has secrets that soon becomes evident and things start to go bump in the night.
There were some really intriguing characters within the story a lot of thought had gone into their development and you find yourself invested in their plights and the setting that the book was written in added depth to the story.
Helen has a way of writing that you can sense the atmosphere and tension coming off the pages which builds to a crescendo to reach it's dramatic conclusion.
I'm a fan of Helen and have read many of her books and this one was just as engaging as the rest.
This was a really interesting story and although I had a few ideas as to who the perpetrator was, I still wasn't sure until the reveal. Even then it was really well written as I was still shocked.
I would definitely recommend this and would read more by this author
I just devoured this book it was so good. This author never disappoints and just went on a roller coaster of a ride. I really thought it was going somewhere but then it went elsewhere. Wow.
I was given an advance copy by net galley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
Thank you for NetGalley for providing me with this book for review.
Absolutely loved this book, felt a real connection to the characters, had me racing through the pages to see how it would end.
This was such a twisty, creepy book that I just wanted to keep on reading it. It did give me goosebumps as at times I felt my imagination run away with me. A wonderful book. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Even though there are several characters they are not hard to keep up with. Maddy Hart who is a writer is not getting along with her boyfriend so decides to go away by herself so she can finish her second book on time. She moves to Lakeview House which is rumored to be haunted and is in a remote location. Once there things really start to go wrong. I would define this book more spooky than one in the thriller genre but I found it very entertaining.
A decent page turner for a quick read but unfortunately quite predictable, I wasn't really surprised at any point. We were also following a few too many people for me. I ended up feeling like we were cutting back and forth constantly. Still it had a good setting that created a lot of atmosphere and an interesting cast of characters.
My review of Lakeview House by Helen Phifer

This book is totally different to the Morgan Brookes detective series I have been reading and enjoying.
The story is a bit weak and lazy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lakeview House was one of those stories that intrigued me from the outset, but it didn’t deliver in the way I hoped.
Our main character is writer Maddy Hart. Fresh out of an abusive relationship, Maddy is struggling to write. Her best friend, bookshop owner Stella, suggests she should get away and take herself somewhere secluded in order to focus on her writing. When Maddy gets the details of a caretaker’s position in Lakeview House - a remote house in the Lake District - she jumps at the opportunity.
Naturally, watching how Maddy settles into the remote house, which locals avoid as they fear it’s haunted, is entertaining. She finds herself making friends in the village but she can’t shake the strange feelings that someone is watching her.
We know there is something suspicious happening in the area. There are passages from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the area. Someone who is killing walkers and dumping their bodies in the lake. This person wants Maddy out, and is prepared to kill anyone who puts their interests in danger.
Alongside these rather odd passages we learn of Maddy’s ex, Connor, and his determination to make her pay. He cannot let Maddy get the better of him.
Before too long, all manner of people are making their way to this remote Lake District setting. Some don’t survive. Others arrive at a fortuitous moment.
While I was, initially, quite taken by the book it went downhill rapidly. The revelation as to the identity of our serial killer really was a bolt out of the blue, and the rapidity with which things escalated made little sense.
Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this prior to publication. While Lakeview House didn’t quite work for me, there were plenty of signs that this is a writer to try again.
