Cicely Lewis, a school librarian, brings this series with this book Focus on Civil Rights Sit-Ins. The nonfiction text is easy to read and gather information. Recommended grades 6-8
This book is part of the series "History in Pictures," which provides historical photographs and brief explanations of important historical topics. I think the questions listed beneath the Table of Contents listing are very important to use and should be emphasized and even modeled for young readers so that they learn to get the most out of examining photos. The book provides a brief look at civil rights sit-ins and protests and introduces well-known figures like Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, as well as lesser known protesters. The last text page also focuses on "photo reflection." Teachers would find it easy to use this book with children and to supplement it with further material. Back matter includes a glossary, source notes, and a reading list, This book and these photos are a great way to introduce young readers to historical contexts and to promote historical literacy.
