There is two zones the carnivore zone and herbivore zone. Yagi, a goat, is a bookstore clerk in the carnivore zone. This is rare for a goat to be a bookstore clerk, let alone in the carnivore zone, because they love to eat paper. His boss, Ookami, is a wolf that is always getting on him for eating the books. However, Yagi has a unique ability when he eats a book and he sets up his section based off of it. All the employees love Yagi and he helps the store draw in more customers.
Even though Ookami thinks Yagi forgot about him from before, he really cares about Yagi and even went to the lengths of trying to find him a safer bookstore to work at after an incident happened. Although Yagi doesn't want to work at any other store besides Ookami's. One day he eats some paper Ookami had prepared and never tasted anything that good. Now he can't stop eating everything Ookami writes on. Then Chita has him eat a pervy magazine, which makes Yagi realize something.
I love how the art is with Ookami and Yagi happy/blushing. As a warning, it does heat up in the second half. It moves along nicely without having the reader wondering how the two main characters are connected or having awkward jumps in time. I was satisfied with how the story progressed and ended in this onshot.
I received an advanced reader copy of Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawa in exchange for an honest review.
I am a big fan of yaoi/BL manga, so when I saw this book available through NetGalley I had to request it. This was my first time reading an anthropomorphic manga, meaning the characters are humanized animals. So when I say the protagonist is a goat, he's really a human with goat ears and horns.
Yagi the Bookshop Goat is about a goat named Yagi who works at a bookstore. This is novel profession in this world, because goats are notorious for eating paper, to the point where most bookstores ban goat people from even entering. But one store owner, a wolf named Ookami, takes a chance on Yagi, and soon develops feelings for him.
I really enjoyed reading this manga. Yagi was an adorable protagonist, always anxious about abstaining from nibbling on books and trying his best to impress his boss. Ookami was an excellent love interest, being mysterious and with a past for Yagi to discover. Ookami has obvious feelings for Yagi from the beginning, and it was amusing to witness how oblivious Yagi was, and how he slowly came to the realization that their feelings were mutual.
This book's art was really well done. I liked the designs of the characters, and Yagi especially had very animated expressions. Yagi the Bookshop Goat is sweet and funny, and an exemplary representation of the genre. Thank you to TOKYOPOP's Love x Love department and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.
This was absolutely adorable. It has a very unique twist on the childhood friends to lovers trope and was executed beautifully. The pacing was done very well considering the length and all in all the mood was so sweet. This is definitely a new favourite.
TWs: Sexual content, mental illness
This was a really sweet adult, achillean manga about a goat boy who works at a bookshop and has to fight the urge to eat all the books because they taste so good to him and he starts to fall for the brooding wolf who is his manager.
It was sweet, funny, awkward and overall just a really fun time.
If you want a cute queer manga, this one is a good one
This book is just full of fluff and I just adore Yagi the goat. He has loved books from a young age and was determined to work in a bookshop. The one problem is that Goats eat paper so it was hard to find someone to let him work there. Luckily a wolf named Ookami lets him work in the bookshop he work in. Yagi has eaten many books and can actually taste the books. He can taste the emotions and the motivation of the writer.
I adored the relationship between Yagi and Ookami. They were just so sweet together and watching them fall for each other was so cute. The art is beautiful and all the Characters were a joy to read about. I liked the world the Mangaka created and sensei did a marvellous job of creating such a fantastic world. The different animals and zones of the world were well explained so you don't feel lost.
The backstory of the two explains Yagi's love for books and of the kind person who introduced him to them. That really made the story so much sweeter and its like they were destined to meet and be together.
I cant wait to read more from this Mangaka and get lost in all the fluff again. If you enjoy your BL/Yaoi Manga on the sweet, fluffy and PG zone, this is for you.
Review to come April 20th on blog/goodreads/etc..
I received this book from Netgalley/Publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I just cannot resist manga about bookstores! I just have to read them! And this one sounded adorable featuring a goat that eats books... but shouldn't. XD
<3 I had such a laugh each time Yagi ate a book and see him realise that yes, he ate that book. Haha. Sometimes it just stays with bites but it can happen that he just noms the whole book in one go.
<3 I loved that he tried to be better and tried to not eat books. Though maybe he shouldn't eat receipts and such either to compensate.
<3 Loved how hard Yagi worked! He really is showing that despite being a goat and officially banned from anything with books (which saddens me but I can also understand) he really loves books and works hard to promote them. I mean he really did something amazing with the children's books section!
<3 The art was really fun and fitted well with the story. The sex scenes were also well done.
<3 That cover is adorable!
<3 I loved Chita, she was just so sweet and I loved how she was there for Yagi and how their friendship really evolved to them calling each other even when they weren't at work.
<3 It reminded me of a sweeter/nicer Beast Stars along with a big dash of Book Girl. The carnivores/herbivores are living in peace. There are zones. Then there is Yagi eating books and apparently able to taste books in a way that Tokho also could!
<3 Bookstores!! This one takes mostly place in a bookstore!
<3 Yaoi! I hadn't expected that. Haha. I just thought with charming he meant doing something adorable to get to work. Not charm the wolf to also do some other things!
<3 YAOI WITH CONSENT!! YES LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! I have read so many yaoi and so many are iffy with consent and filled with bad things, but in this one? Consent baby! Two consenting adults doing sexy things! I was just so happy! Even after that one night stand Ookami asked Yagi kindly if he wanted this and that he would go slowly and be careful.
<3 Loved that Ookami casually answered the cards that Yagi had made when they started dating. Had a laugh at the last one (and maybe it was a tad of a worried laugh).
:| The flashbacks could have gone better. At one point even Yagi gets harassed by someone, he gets saved by Ookami-kun, and then boom flashback to when he gets his clothes/starts working at the bookstore. However, there was no warning it just flowed easily into the harassment story and I had to re-read 3 times to see it was a flashback.
All in all, I need book 2! I want more of the bookstore, I need more of these two and their relationship!
Thank you to TOKYOPOP and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this manga to review!
I will start by saying this is a BL story and the content is meant for adults. Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a oneshot manga about Yagi, a goat who dreams of working in a bookstore after being inspired by a boy who would read him books as a child at his local bookstore. In this world, the characters are anthropomorphic animals that basically look like people but have animal ears and tails. Everyone lives in 1 of 2 zones, the herbivore zone or the carnivore zone. Yagi is unable to get a job at a bookstore in the herbivore zone due to the stereotype that goats eat everything and so he makes his way to the carnivore zone and works in the only bookstore that will accept him, which is managed by a wolf named Ookami. Yagi does indeed end up eating some books, but it all works out in the end.
The story is largely focused on the friendship between Yagi and Ookami and eventually their relationship. I often find that similar oneshot manga are somewhat rushed or they feel incomplete, but this was not the case with Yagi the Bookshop Goat. The story starts and ends perfectly. Both the friendship and relationship feel genuine and progress naturally. I love how the characters are opposites personality-wise, which makes them complement each other well. The story is quite funny, but also has some action and intimate moments too. Lastly, the art was quite adorable! Overall, I give this story a 5/5 and would love to read more of Fumi Furukawa's work in the future.
This was a cute, one volume story that had far more world-building in it than I expected. The story was in fact, about a goat person who works in a bookshop, living his dream, even though he REALLY likes to eat paper. I also appreciated how much consent was present in the more adult parts of the story. It was nice to see.
A huge thank you to Tokyopop and Netgalley for the ARC.
Goodness, I really loved this story! Setting in particular had me hooked right from the start. While I'm familiar with a variety of hybrid tropes, the concept of an herbivore/carnivore delineation is something I've never seen before and it provided for a really adorable dynamic between Yagi and Ookami. And I've never read anything with a goat hybrid before! Such a unique, but inspired choice haha. The idea of a goat fighting "the seduction of paper" to be a bookseller... What an innocent and inherently hilarious premise.
I'm glad that the entire volume focused on them and their relationship. The background regarding their past was so sweet, and Ookami's transition from passive friend to loving partner felt really genuine; as a result, I also didn't really mind the smut sections. Sometimes, in cozy mangas like this, they feel out of place and a bit much for me, but because I felt connected to their love for each other, not just attraction, it felt warranted here. I also enjoyed all of the side characters and the momentum/energy they brought to the story. I love a good "found family"!
Overall, I highly recommend 💚
5 out of 5 stars, ★★★★★
3 stars for this anthropomorphic gay romance between a book-hungry goat-man and a goat-hungry wolf-man (not a werewolf). This manga was cute, but there were things that made it not for younger readers - at least two instances of on page sex, once with blurred consent, and a bear-man accidentally wounds our hero. The relationship moved quickly because it was between two people who found themselves together again after being important to each other when they were younger, so there was deeper trust than might have been there ordinarily. The author used a lot of tropes that have been used elsewhere in BL manga.
This is a very humorous and fun manga to read! I loved Yagi and Ookami's dynamics together as well as their backstories. I also loved the world in this one where we have a Herbivore Zone and a Carnivore Zone. I don't know if this one is a standalone, but I would like to read more volumes in this world.
4/5
Tokyopop strikes again with another marvelous, one-volume, Boy's Love manga. If I am ever having a bad day, Tokyopop's Love x Love manga are wonderful pick-me-ups with all the fluff and cuteness. Yagi the Bookshop Goat did not disappoint one bit and is one of the best Love x Love releases yet.
This short-volume manga follows Yagi, a young billy goat, who has always dreamed of working in a bookstore; however, everyone knows that goats just love paper. Yagi is turned away from all the bookstores in the herbivore community. Wanting to fulfill his dream, he heads over to the carnivore community and begs a Wolf bookstore owner for. a job and is given the opportunity. Oh and Yagi also happens to have a talent where if he eats a book he can get a hint of the book's "flavor" or themes if you will. However, soon Yagi is falling for his Wolf boss and things become complicated.
This entire standalone manga just made me so happy. Yagi was an adorable, innocent, little billy goat who has a passion for reading, yet also has a passion for eating the books he loves. It's a serious personal dilemma.
I also found the whole world interesting. You have the herbivore community full of goats, pigs, bunnies, etc., and the carnivore community of bears, cheetahs, wolves, owls, and other amazing animals. The whole theme and idea of the manga was unique. Something new and interesting that captures you right away. I would love to see more manga volumes based in this world.
The romance, while not as unique as the world, was super cute and fluffy. I love Yagi and Ookami, they are both such cinnamon rolls!
I highly recommend this volume to everyone who wants a cute, fluffy, and unique read all in one sitting.
I actually really enjoyed this little comic. the characters were sweet and the romance wasn't toxic or creepy. I also found the premise to be sweet and creative! my only issue was that some of the drawings were a little grainy.
**I was provided an electronic ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for honest review.**
Fumi Furukawa's Yagi the Bookshop Goat is a sweet and spicy yaoi manga intended for adults. Yagi is a goat who loves books and desperately wants to work in a bookshop. Since Yagi is a goat, he tends to be banned from any place selling paper due to his wanting to eat it. When the only bookshop willing to hire him is in in the carnivore zone, Yagi happily accepts employment from Ookami the wolf.
Both the art style and the story of Yagi are incredibly sweet and aesthetically enjoyable. While the story is somewhat surface level, readers do get to understand some of Yagi and Ookami's back stories and how they have gotten to the present day.
I could easily see this story being one people could come back to as a comfort read given the light-hearted vibe and the story being contained to one volume.
I would love to see additional stories set in this world or surrounding this cast of characters as Furukawa has set up so much potential in this world.
While the premise of this book was cute, I wish there was more of a history or explanation on the feelings Yagi felt when eating books or paper. It is briefly touched on but I found that more interesting. Overall, this was just a cute, fluffy book but didn’t have any real depth for me.
Super cute love story about two bookshopers, one is a goat and the other is a wolf in a communite divided between carnivors and herbivors.
Our protagonist is a goat who loves eating books and has a special talent that allows him to taste the books.
Really cute BL story with furry elements (only ears and tails and are not really relevant).
The art is super cute too.
ARC Copy...Was very split on how to review and rate this because even the character designs were cute (I admit the Yagi was kind of cute in his innocent personality + appearance), found the relationship to be dominant-submissive sided + rushed/jump right in at the early stages.
The art style was nice but the story was very simple and except for the society being divided by whether your a herbivore or carnivore, it was pretty ordinary. I wasn't very comfortable with the age gap between the two characters that eventually fall in love.
I got the chance to read this through Netgalley in exchange for a fair review. This story is adorable, though it's also pretty explicit! The love story between the two characters is rather sweet and the explicit scenes are pretty short, though. The idea of tasting books is really neat and makes me wonder if other animals have their own magic skills.

Yagi the Bookshop Goat is BL, but refreshingly different. The characters are anthropomorphic animals mostly looking like people except for the ears and tails and whatnot. Yagi is a goat and loves books. Already as a kid he wanted to become a bookseller, but no one wants to hire a goat, since they eat paper. Ookami then, a wolf, decides to hire the guy, since unbeknownst to Yagi, Ookami was the reason Yagi wanted to become a bookseller. Yagi can taste the stories from paper and soon he learns Ookami's taste from paper too and these two start having feelings for each other. So, a cute BL story. I'm not a fan of Yagi, since he's a whiny character and crying all the time. Ookami is quiet and wolfish in a sense and they do fit together. Gladly the plot is quite interesting and we get to see other characters too, so there's actually something happening in the story.
The art is OK and works well with the plot, even though it's nothing miraculous. The characters have facial expressions and there's lots of cute humor in the manga. This is a feel-good story, but not my cup of tea. If you want your boys' love served with animalistic characteristics and cuteness then this is surely for you.
