This was such a cute BL (mlm) love story. This is the adorable love story of Yagi, a young goat who loves books and Ookami-san, who is his a young wolf and Yagi’s boss. The art is very sweet and the story is short and enjoyable. At times I think it would have been good to have a connector pages or panels between different scenes, but it’s easy to ignore if you are not nitpicky like me :D. I hope everyone would give this cute manga a chance!

Thanks to NetGalley and Tokyopop for this book.
A charming BL manga! I loved the sweet drawings and the character designs. The goat especially was adorable. The romance was also sweet and wholesome. I love the idea of a goat eating the paper of the book and can know the emotions and story of it. This is a fun read if you want an adorable yaoi manga that is like human zootopia with none of the animal racism tension.
Cute story and cute art, but pretty average as far as this genre and type of manga goes. It isn't an unenjoyable read, but when you read a lot of manga and see a lot of these kinds of tropes, it's kind of like reskinning a specific type of plot but not adding a whole lot to it. The anthro thing had piqued my interest, but this book doesn't really build much on that, it might as well be a bunch of normal humans wearing animal horns/ears/tails, with that one added quirk of eating paper. The NSFW twist also felt like an odd choice, it felt out of place in this book and I couldn't help but feel like it was added as a "sex sells" kind of thing. Overall, I didn't feel like I wasted my time reading this book, but I also didn't feel particularly fulfilled or inspired either.
I feel like the book started off somewhat childish. In the end it ended up feeling a lot more mature. I was, for some reason, expecting this to be a funny middle grade novel but that could be anymore off. I still enjoyed it, I just wasn't expecting this book to go there.
I loved this, it was super cute and made me smile. However if you don't like yaoi or steamy manga this is not for you. Really enjoyed this and really want to read more!
First, my gratitude to TOKYOPOP and Netgalley for providing me an advanced reading copy of this series in exchange for an honest review.
I found this series weirdly adorable. It is set in an animal world where herbivores co-exist with carnivores. Yagi is a goat with a weird ability to literally devour a book to enjoy its content by taste. He works in a bookshop in the Carnivores zone together with Ookami, the wolf manager. With a few twists and turns, they finally realized their feelings for each other. This is actually more tamed than I thought it would be, despite the cute cover, and that's why I love it. And the art style is also cute!!
Going to be really honest here - I saw the title and was sold before reading the description of the story. Yaoi isn't for me, so I won't be rating this on other platforms. But the characters were cute and the bookstore vibe is always a win. I think anyone looking for character-driven yaoi will appreciate this.
SO CUTE. Just... really, really adorable. Zero weirdness surrounding the animal characteristics and the carnivore/herbivore stereotypes aren't really explored in-depth, it's just a convenient plot device.
Yagi loves books even though he has to struggle to keep from eating them! He lucked into a position working in a book shop in the carnivore section of his home because he has the special ability to smell and taste the story within the book (and as an anomaly in that area, attracts more customers).
However his habit of tasting the books is driving this boss Ookami crazy and Yagi is a little scared of him.
In flashbacks we learn Ookami played a big role in Yagi's love of books.
When a carnivore author accidentally hurts Yagi, Ookami wants to fire him for his safety and Yagi returns home for a bit where he learns a bit about his connection to Ookami and just how much he cares about him.
Thereafter he develops a particular taste for notes and scraps Ookami has written but isn't sure why. When he figures it out he's afraid Ookami doesn't feel the same.
It's an adorable love story with the childhood connection, enemies to loves tropes in full force.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
3.5/5 stars, rounded up!
Yagi the Bookshop Goat takes place in a universe of all animals, separated into the carnivore and herbivore zones. The distinction appears to be an allegory for racism as there are mentions of a less progressive past for carnivores living in the herbivore zone. Yagi dreams of working in a bookstore, but goats aren't normally allowed to work in bookstores because they eat the books! Because of a local bookstore worker from his hometown, when he was young, Yagi will stop at nothing to achieve his dream - even if that means working in the carnivore zone. How strange that the owner of this store would be willing to let him work there and put up with him eating all the books!
When i started reading this, I did not realize two things. One - this was a one-shot and two - this was 18+. I will say i was a bit jarred to see the infamous white light saber when I wasn't expecting it, but there wasn't an excessive amount of spicy scenes. There were two small sequences so viewer discretion is definitely advised, but they weren't over the top by any means. Knowing this is a one-shot, the pacing makes a lot more sense. It was a rather quick progression of the romance, but with a limited page count it works. The art work is beautiful and the characters were very expressive! Yagi and Ookami, hilariously goat and wolf in Japanese, have a very warming connection and it shows! Very happy to see Tokyopop, a company I've long since supported, with more LGBTQIA+ content!
A review will also be added to my Goodreads today, 3/9. A post with the review will be made on my instagram on 3/24 and a mini review will be added to my Instagram story tonight, 3/9 and then archived in my Mini Review highlight for the remainder of the year.
I am a bookseller and Yagi the Bookshop Goat was a delightfully relatable manga, because Yagi knows exactly how comforting, exciting, and enjoyable it is to surround yourself all day with the thing you love - books! The fact we're both children's booksellers was a nice bonus, as I too spend hours curating the picture book section and cleaning it up after tiny tornadoes swoop in.
Both the story and art style are simplistic but effective, with the art especially doing most of the work to convey the heart-pounding adorableness of the cast, with Yagi and Ookami-san at peak BL-fluff character cuteness. I'd really like to read more by this manga-ka actually, while the designs are rather basic they're still compelling (did I mention everyone is sooo cuuute aahhhh ;-) and I'm curious to see what other stories she's capable of writing. Because of this fluffy atmosphere I was a bit shocked when suddenly there were several awkward sex scenes, as I had initially picked this up thinking it was more of an all ages sweet romance, but seasoned BL readers know this sort of thing is to be expected and it didn't take me too much out of the story. Overall I liked this light and fluffy read and would happily read it again.
Thank you Tokyopop for my review copy! I am eager to have this in my bookshop to share with customers.
What can I say other than cute, cute, cute? When I see animal ears on characters, there's a general sort of worry that it's going to be like Zootopia. No worries, it's not.
Yagi is a goat who works in a bookstore - the only problem is that he keeps eating the books! His manager, Ookami, hired him anyway despite goats having a negative reputation.
The drawings are adorable and fresh. The story is coherent and easy to follow. The plot/romance isn't particularly original, but this is still an enjoyable read.
Thank you, TOKYOPOP, for allowing me to read Yagi the Bookshop Goat early!
I loved the premise and the first one hundred pages, but the way it became steamy was sort of cringe which it's something that often happens with yaoi manga (one of the characters gets drunk or has a fever and the couple ends up having sexual relations) and I have always hated that. I wish it had happened more genuinely, it'd have been ten times better.
loved this!! such a cute and fluffy read, it was really enjoyable so it made it a quick read for me
I adore this type of manga and can't wait for it to go on sale
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is absurdly adorable, and sweet enough to give you a toothache. From the premise, I was hooked: A goat boy who wants to work in a bookstore but can't resist eating all the books! The art is very cute and I enjoyed all the character designs with basic animal traits. (Ears on a bear, horns on a goat, feathers on an owl, etc.) The plot and character development never really go beyond the surface level, but I found that I didn't mind very much. I was content to be wrapped up in a fluffy, stress free world of cute animal people. I'd happily read an entire series about Yagi, or at least set in the same universe.
Yagi is a goat who dreams of working as a bookseller. But since goats are known for eating books, he has a hard time finding a job. Finally he lands a job in the carnivorous zone and his boss is the wolf Ookami. It seems Yagi has a unique talent for understanding the “essence” of the books he eats. Ookami gets mad if Yagi eats too many books though! I like the art and there is good chemistry between our two main characters. The story is a bit weak but overall I enjoyed it and I will pick up the next volume to see how their relationship progresses. Recommended to fans of spicy boy’s love manga or cute yaoi.
Yagi has always loved books and dreamt of working in a bookstore. Unfortunately, paper-munching goats aren't exactly welcome in bookstores. But after collecting refusal upon refusal, Yagi persuades Ookami, the strict wolf store manager, to give him a chance. Will Yagi be able to resist the lure of all the yummy books surrounding him? But above all, will the scary wolf be able to resist the surging attraction to the sweet goat?
Well, it was a very cute and funny read. Yagi was the sweetest cinnamon roll, and Ookami, behind his composed and severe appearance, was so caring that it's impossible not to root for them. Also, the art was adorable.
What I didn't like was how fast their relationship developed. I would have preferred a more slow-burned romance, keeping the steamy scenes for later. However, since it's my first shot at Boy's Love manga, I could be biased.
Got an eArc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
If you're looking for a cute and funny and cute (I've said it twice because it's really cute. Now I said it thrice.) manga, this is one of those! I really enjoyed reading this! If you're like me, who also look for a deeper meaning to these kinds of manga, I swear, you can expect to see that here.
Yagi is someone who has been doubting himself but is also headstrong. He didn't give up on wanting to be a bookstore clerk, but the self-doubt of being a goat is looming behind the curtains because goats aren't allowed in bookstores as they eat paper or the book itself. In this fast-paced manga, I'm glad I get to see Yagi accepting and the process of loving himself. Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawai s a great read!
TW: Sexually Explicit Scene (Two scenes), Death of Parents, Grief, Anxiety, and Depression (search it up for more specifics or correct TW as mine is what I thought is TW while I read it)
This has got to be my new top favorite Tokypop title. It's so adorable. I liked the carnivore x herbivore aspect and the bookshop aspect. But one of my favorite parts was just watching the cute little goat munch on books and paper. Can't wait to share this.
This manga is a cute and fluffy romance between a goat named Yagi and a wolf named Ookami who work in a bookshop together. It is both equal parts silly and cute and the illustrations are pleasant.
