Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The Dragon Universe by various is an amazing, beautiful dragon encyclopedia. I remember getting encyclopedias like this when I was kid at Costco. I loved going through the entries and reading about mythical creatures that I had never heard of before. This book is a throwback to that series and includes detailed drawing for every entry. According to the description, this book "combines extraordinary texts on the history of dragons, with drawings of remarkable quality, realism of line and thoroughness of detail."
Overall, The Dragon Universe is an amazing, detailed encyclopedia with gorgeous illustrations. One highlight of this book are the beautiful artwork. The dragons are depicted as powerful and sometime terrifying, and I couldn't stop turning the pages to see more of the art. Another highlight of this book is the amount of research that the author must have done in order to create this encyclopedia. There were plenty of interesting stories about dragons that I had never heard of before. If you're intrigued by the description, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in May!
The illustrations were excellent. Some of the text was interesting, but other times it felt like there was too much of it. Overall I enjoyed The Fairy Universe more than this one.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The main purpose of this book clearly are the gorgeous illustrations. And it definitely delivers on that premise. I could sit here for hours, staring at the dragons, and soaking in every detail of the scenes. But it's not only a book full of vivid drawings but it's also accompanied by various short stories, poems, dare I say life lessons (?) that will add even more color (pun intended) to the illustrations.
I love that the book includes various styles - yes, most are the traditional, Western fantasy drawings (including the (half) naked women), but there are some more whimsical, cartoonish, or abstract options as well as versions from Asian culture. I also really liked that it comes with two perspectives. The dragon as something to be feared and the dragon as a friend.
Thanks to Netgalley for the free advanced reader copy. I'm looking forward to the release of this book. Definitely one that I'll be going to add to my library as a physical copy.
We all know a fan of high fantasy, elves, dragons, maidens, and barbarians. This is the coffee table book for that friend. The numerous illustrations are simply beautiful, filled with visions from a huge selection of artists. You get so many styles and feels here, I am sure many will look at it again and again. Definitely a must for dragon lovers. Story-wise it wasn't as strong, but you are here for the images.
Stunning artwork, but a bit too much information at times. I like nice bite-sized pieces of information, and this was too chunky for an art book. I will say though, there were some pieces of art in here that I would love to have as a desktop wallpaper.
Great! If you love dragon tis is a book for you. The art make it the perfect coffee table book and the stories inside just make it eve better! Must read!
Amazing cover! I would like to review it, but I am unable to access this file in any given app that I've tried. Converting acsm file to other type also does not help. Will come back to give proper review if and when this issue is fixed.
An absolutely beautiful book! The artwork is so stunning and I love the details and stories included in the book. It was a very interesting read if youre a fan of this type of content. I could honestly see people pulling details and inspiration from this for things like D&D campaigns and fantasy writings.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to Netgalley & Diamond Book Distributors!
The Dragon Universe is a beautiful collection of illustrations and stories about dragon folklore. This volume chronicles legends and great battles with dragons along with a time in which humans and dragons were at peace. The book is broken into 2 parts for easier reading.
This book is perfect for adult fans of dragons and mythology.
The Dragon Universe is a beautiful collection of artwork featuring dragons interspersed with text. The text reads like a collection of field notes, journal entries, songs, and stories that work really well with the images to give a sense of dragon lore. The illustrations are great inspiration, and the stories are entertaining to read. I would definitely recommend this for artists and for anyone interested in dragon stories.
Excellent detailed artwork from various artists, entertaining text, fantastic coffee-table book
