Holly the Flying Horse (Magical Rescue Vets #4). By Melody Lockhart. 2022. Arcturus Publishing (ARC eBook)
Kat is jealous that her best friend Rosie has befriended a new girl, Lunella. Not only that, but Kat becomes suspicious of Lunella when Kat and Rosie find an injured flying horse caught in a holly bush in Starfall Forest after Lunella had been asking around about a horse. But realizing that the threat to Holly still exists, everyone works to see that no harm comes to the residents of Starfall Forest. Tthe girls learn a lesson about friendship and loyalty, new characters and creatures are introduced, a very entertaining scene with flutterpuffs commences, and as always, the illustrations are well done.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Holly the Flying Horse is the latest instalment in the Magical Rescue Vets series and I loved it as much as all the previous books! Kat is more the main character in this book which I loved - the only other books I can think of that alternates characters being the main one in different books was the Sweet Valley twins/high books.
In this book, Kat becomes jealous of a new girl who becomes friends with Rosie. This was a good subject to reflect upon for children as everyone experiences jealousy at some time in their lives and its good to think about and talk about to find ways to resolve this when it happens. The horse is an amazing magical character and if the horse doesn't tempt you to read it - what about a flying Library?!
The only think I found a little confusing in this book was the jump from summer to winter between Blaze the Phoenix and this book. This may have been best being set in autumn maybe? But apart from that I loved it!
I am always on the lookout for chapter books for my daughter. She is a 3rd grader and I want her books to be both appropriate and engaging. She really enjoyed both the Magical Rescue Vets books that we previewed. I thought they were cute as well.
Do you believe in magical creatures? This story has two best friends that can’t wait for the holidays. Kat is looking forward to pending time with Rosie and going to the Calico Comfrey’s Veterinary Surgery to help the magical/enchanted creatures. When she gets to with Rosie, it appears that Rosie has a new best friend. Going into Starfall Forest, Rosie finds a horse in a trap. This makes Kat suspicious of Rosie’s new best friend. Why?
The author has written a delightful story that made me smile. Yet at times, it also made me sad seeing Kay’s jealousy. It’s a story that indirectly speaks about friendship and loyalty. The illustrations are beautiful. They are a perfect addition to the story. It’s a gentle reminder of what tue friendship is.
I read this with my 6 year old. She's just starting to read chapter books and it was a little bit difficult for her to read on her own but she really enjoyed it when I read it to her.
This is a really lovely series
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
My daughters love this book. This is a magical book about unicorns, a magical forest, and dragons.
Kat and Rosie are friends who help the magical animals in the Starfall Forests. There's a new girl in town. Kat is having a hard time adapting to Rosie's new friendship.
We truly enjoyed reading this book. Can't wait to read the first 3 books in the series.

A short and sweet story about friendship based in a forest full of magical creatures. This is the fourth book in the Magical Rescue Vets series and the first in the series that I have read.
My eight year old enjoyed the story and was especially happy with how the main problem was resolved. They did struggle to understand Kat's jealousy and reasoning for believing she was being replaced by Lunella as Rosie's best friend. I agree that it did feel unexplained and unjustified.
On a slightly different note, my son and I both want to own our own flying libraries now!
All in all, this is a cute story for fans of magical creatures.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
My daughter loves unicorns and all kinds of magical creatures so this book was a nice bedtime story for us.
Thanks to Netgalley for this flying adventure.
Flying horses, flutterpuffs, oh my! This was my second time reading along with my daughter on another of Rosie and Kat’s adventures. This one was super cute and had an undertone of how important it is to include your friends and not let anyone feel left out. It also hinted how important it is to give new friends/classmates a warm welcome. Can’t wait for the next Starfall Forest adventure! My daughter really loved the name Lollipop Orchard too!
This is a super cute book for kids! I think the age range would be like 3rd - 5th grade. It was a super fun and super easy read about a magical land with our lands where magical creatures live. And where there are animals, vets are needed to tend and care for them. This novel is appropriate for kids and I don't see any points of concern for parents. My only suggestion might be to have a follow up discussion with kids after reading this book about jealousy and sharing friends.
What I loved most: themes of friendship, being kind to animals and respecting their natural habitats, and being brave enough to admit you did something wrong. I think the lessons that this novel teaches are perfect for the younger crowd and are delightfully rendered. I do love the honesty of the characters. I also loved the illustrations added in! They matched delightfully well and I was truly able to see the characters, their inventions, the animals and their quirks.
Best parts: a flying book library and the grumpy gummy bear! Although, I think all the creatures in the Starfall Forest were creative and unique!
This is the second Magical Rescue Vets book I have read and I enjoyed this one even more than the last one. I love the magical animal characters in these books. Books that can fly, magical horses, and cloud pets. It's all so much fun. I highly recommend this book. It's a lot of fun and it has good lessons that can be taught to kids. This book show how jealousy can be hurtful and it's ok to have more than one best friend. This book also teaches that you should be respectful of animals, take care of the environment they live in, and not to capture animals that are better suited to being in the wild. I can't wait to share this story with my goddaughters and to read the other books in this series.
This was a fantastic middle grade read with my daughter. We read about a chapter a night and the chapters were the perfect length, interesting, and engaging enough to keep her attention. (Which is a trick for sure!) I thought it was really cute and fantastical. We can’t wait to read more!
From my 8year old daughter: I loved it! My favorite part was the end, especially the last picture. I only wish it was in color! My favorite character was Lunella.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Netgalley and Arcturus publishing in exchange for an honest review
This is a very cute children's story for fans of mythical animals and unusual creatures. I love the way the author melded animals to make other animals and the adorable afflictions she came up with as illnesses for the creatures (nothing serious that would upset kiddos).
Roise and Kat are BFFs. When a new girl shows up and befriends Rosie, Kat becomes jealous. Kat and Rosie share a secret that they are helpers at a magical veterinary clinic hidden deep in Starfall Forest. When the new girl starts asking if they have seen a horse anywhere, Kat's suspicions grow. Later when they are collecting ingredients to cure one of the critters they find a wounded flying horse (author never calls it a Pegasus, not sure why), who they name Holly because she was caught in a holly bush. They soon discover that the Elf king is in the forest collecting creatures for his own personal zoo and the girls set out to make sure he does not get their horse.
I read this in about half an hour to 45 minutes, however, I am not the target audience for this book so it may take younger ones a bit longer. That said, it was charming and delightful to get lost in this little story for a bit and the accompanying illustrations are adorable. This is a very cute story for young (or older) readers who love magical animals.
Holly the Flying Horse is the fourth book in the Magical Rescue Vets series by Melody Lockhart. Due out 1st May 2022 from Arcturus, it's 128 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.
This is a well written and engaging story full of friendship, adventure, and the care and nurturing of magical creatures. It's written as a chapter book and is appropriate for all ages, but the intended age range is approximately 7-10 years. The language is very clean and there's no violence. Best friends Rosie and and Kat are helpful, intelligent, and relatable youngsters and kids will enjoy following their adventures
The art by Morgan Huff is line drawn in monochrome, but suits the story very well and is nicely rendered. The book is generously illustrated throughout (in B&W).
The resolution and denouement are satisfying and well done. This series only contains 4 books at present, but promises to be one which will be perfect for binge reading. I would've devoured these when I was 7 years old.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This was another great book in the Magical Rescue Vets series. I love the friendship lesson and the lesson on caring for animals that was learned. I look forward to reading more books in this series in the future.
The Magical Rescue Vets series follows two girls who travel between a veterinary office and a magical world called Starfall Forest, filled with unicorns and dragons. In this latest instalment in the series, the girls deal with a blizzard while also helping a flying horse with a broken wing!
These early chapterbooks are perfect for young readers excited to move on to this new stage of reading. There are about 9 chapters per book and the chapters are relatively short and include simple black and white photos. It looks like the age recommendation is 7 to 10 years and I think that is a good estimate. As a grade 3 teacher, I could definitely see my 8-10 year olds reading and enjoying these books! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!
Thank you so much to arcturus and netgalley for the ebook to read and review
An injured flying horse, poachers in the forest capturing magical creatures, hurting & taking them and a new girl that Rosie has become incredibly close with making Kat feel left out.
This was interesting, it had a lot going on all the same time we had multiple storylines, we also got to meet some interesting new characters and some cute new creatures which was fun. I really love this magical little world.
Lunella the new girl left Kat suspicions and left out but then she finds something out about her and doesn’t know who she can tell about it. I like the way their relationship developed throughout the story, as Kat was really sad the second she met her but then had to figure out everything on her own about her.
I love that these stories teach compassion, kindness and friendship all while we get a really fun, magical story meeting all the fun creatures that inhabit the forest. They are such great stories, really cute illustrations throughout and are easy to read and easy to get into.
I really liked this book, the story was a bit different but it was still just as wonderful as I expected. I love Rosie & Kat and the funny vets always make the story interesting.
What a perfect read for little girls. Two best friends, who drink the most delicious sounding hot chocolate, having adventures together in a magical forest with mythical creatures, who all have silly names. A nice story, so easy to read, with touches of humour and delightful illustrations. Just the perfect length too.
Thanks to NetGalley and Arcturus Publishing for providing me with an Advance Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Review to come April 21st on blog/goodreads.

Of course I couldn't resist immediately reading the next book in the series as well! Blaze the Phoenix was tons of fun and I hoped that Holly the Flying Horse would just be as fun!
I love how each book switches between Kat and Rosie. In Blaze we had Rosie as MC and in this book we have Kat's! I am a fan of both characters so it makes me happy seeing them both get the spotlight.
I have to say I was a tad confused by how we just seemingly skipped a whole bit of time. In the previous book we still read about the big vacation and how Rosie and Kat had so many fun adventures during that time and Rosie just really started her new school, and then in this book it is winter break and there is snow everywhere! It just felt very suddenly how we went from just after summer to winter. I would have liked a bit better transition, maybe this could have been a 5th book? And then a 4th with autumn?
And in this one the big thing is that Kat is jealous of a new girl, Lunella. I found it just so ridiculous that she was instantly jealous. Instantly OH NO she wants to go to the café, but that is OUR café. I just found it highly unfair and very un-Kat-like that she acted this. She doesn't even know the girl and besides that, your friend is allowed other friends as well. You don't have ownership of her. So yeah, I wasn't looking forward to seeing more of this jealousy stuff... And yep, the jealousy continued and she did some no no things and made some harmful assumptions. I mean, yes there was a pinch of truth to it, but seriously? I just found it so rude and mean. Plus, I found how everything was solved a tad to easy and magical. It is a very picture perfect ending, I would have rather seen them talk just a bit more before deciding on that.
I just ADORED the flying library, hello, can I come visit as well? Please! Someone just make a portal to book stories, please!! I loved that books would come to you if you needed them by just whistling!
I loved the horse that was mentioned in the title! She was so cute and I was eager to see her flying again! Feel happy and OK! I loved how her role got bigger as the adventure continued.
And of course, just like with all the other books, we meet new creatures in the forest + get some new fun inventions! Next to Holly our flying horse, we also meet with Gingerbread folk and a bird that talks backwards! The teasel we met was one of my favourites, that one was just so cute! And there is a heated function to the carpet (which reminded me of a kotatsu) and there is another dazzling invention that I just wanted to step in. Oh, and I cannot forget the new places we went to! I just love seeing more of the forest and the surrounding parts. The world is so big and I cannot wait to discover more of it as the series continues~
I had a laugh at how they got the flutterpuffs to eat their medicines, it seems that everyone is the same when it is about icky medicines. XD
And the illustrations were wonderful again!
All in all, I am rating this a tad lower as I just wasn't happy with Kat and her enormous silly jealousy, but other than that it was a fun part of the series and I loved the adventures and discovering new parts and seeing new creatures. It was very cute! Cannot wait for the next two books~
Best friends Kat and Rosie love to help at the Calico Comfrey’s Veterinary Surgery in Starfall Forest. But when Rosie makes a new friend, and a flying horse has been found in a trap in the forest, Kat begins to feel threatened and suspicious.
Holly the Flying Horse is the fourth book in the Magical Rescue Vet series. It is a beginner fantasy chapter book that is well suited for readers that enjoy illustrations to help break up text. While I had not read any book from this series before, I was able to follow the story easily. It has an age appropriate conflict regarding friendship and caring for others. The plot is simple and will help build a new reader confidence. The illustrations are adorable and will catch the eye of any animal lover.
This is a delightful series full of lots of magical creatures; from the recognizable such as unicorns and gnomes to others straight out of the imagination of the author like a teasel or flutterpuffs. I can think of quite a few young readers I would personally purchase this series for.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
