I received this ARC from netgalley. To be honest, I really did not like this book. The timeline jumps back and forth, making it impossible to form a relationship or even really care about the characters. It also feels as though the story jumps in somewhere in the middle, and there’s no background building or anything to make you feel as though you know the characters or the story at all. Mr. S, who is mentioned prominently in the summary, isn’t explained very well and I never understood how their relationship came into being or why the character was supposedly basing her life on one of his books. I had to go back multiple times to read the summary of this book to try to determine what it is even trying to be about. Ultimately it feels as though the book can’t decide what it wants to be. Is it a sad story of a character struggling as a family member/loved one of addiction? Is it a romance? You never really know and to be frank, most of the time you don’t care. 2 stars because I was at least able to finish it. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for my copy. This book is based on Martha's Vineyard, so always a must read for me. Georgette goes to Martha's Vineyard to live out a dream from her childhood, after she went on a trip there with her father. Her childhood was difficult, and that trip feels like one of the only bright spots. She is a nurse, and works for a famous author who is failing, then falls in love with a mysterious man. I loved the Vineyard references! The story has love, loss, addiction, found family. Enjoyed reading this. #netgalley #thesilenceinthesound @diannecbraley #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #bookrecommendation #tbr #bookblog #readersofinstagram #bookloversofinstagram #marthasvineyardbooks #lovetoread #foundfamily #addiction
My first book to read by this author but definitely not my last! Such a gripping novel that made it hard for me to put his book down once I started it. Highly recommend!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Koehler Books for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
Unfortunately, I did not finish this book. I got about 19.5% through it and realized I was dreading having to pick it up, which means it is clearly not the book for me.
Each chapter looks like an essay submission for a high school English class. From what I understand, the stories seem to happen to the same character, but each chapter is a different drop along the timeline. My issue is that it feels so disconnected. I don't really care what happens to the characters in the story, and the connections are too loose at this point in the book. It should at least be interesting, even if I don't understand the connections - but it isn't.
I'm not truly sure what this book is about, but I know it wasn't the one for me.
