I've been crying through the last hour of reading. I am not okay. "This sucks,"
I've been putting off reading Book Lovers because, having an Emily Henry book to look forward to, gave me a safety net if I ever got into a slump before the next one came out.
I'm often not the biggest fan of books about books. Beach Read was an outlier. I was hoping Book Lovers would be, too. But at this point, I believe I'll love anything Emily Henry writes, even my least favourite tropes.
Nora is such a strong character. Her tenacity is refreshing. Her arc was beautiful. Her devotion to her sister, everything. She is probably my favourite of Emily's heroines. And her seeking professional help at the end was what I wanted the most. She was forced to grow up too fast, and her guilt consumed her every thought for over a decade. She needed help just as much, if not more, than she needed love. I feel that most romance writers overlook the importance of working on characters' trauma with professional help and Henry doesn't shy away from it.
Charlie, oh Charlie. It honestly broke my heart every time he disclosed more about himself to Nora. He was living his dream and it was snatched away (I know he chose to do it, but was it ever really a choice?), leaving him back in a town he doesn't feel welcome to, or appreciated.
I lived the banter between Charlie and Nora. It was soooo good, sometimes it made cackle. The tension between them was hot and addictive. And Charlie being obsessed with her was the cherry on top.
Libby, ngl I wanted to strangle her sometimes. The manipulation was the last straw for me. I would not have forgiven her so easily. I struggled with it in Happy Place, and it was just as hard for me to swallow in Book Lovers. I know she did it out of love, but she also did it out of selfishness. And we're all a little selfish, but Nora repeatedly asked her sister what was going on with her, worrying, trying her best to make her sister happy during their break, it just didn't sit well with me.
And this brings me to why I love Emily Henry characters so much. They have flaws, but you still love them. They have pasts, struggles, insecurities, dreams, etc. They feel real, like someone who could be your friend.
The settings of her books are always somewhere you'd want to visit. She creates this bubble around the characters, a community, a place that feels like a home - it's not easy to transport a reader like that.
The beauty of an Emily Henry book is feeling like you know the characters, the places, and to feel everything - the anxiety, the pain, the love, the hope. Nothing feels rushed. I haven't read many authors who can do it as well as she does it.
I have been in a book funk for a while but this book has changed everything!
I loved everything about this book; the characters, the setting, the storyline it was all just perfect.
Can't wait to read more from this author
This maybe called Book Lovers but I certainly loved this book and have since purchased a copy for my Mum in paperback. A wonderful romantic read. Perfect for a holiday.
This is not my favourite Emily Henry book but it was an enjoyable enough read! My favourite is for sure Beach Read.
Such a cute book! Absolutely loved everything about this and I think it’s my favourite Emily Henry that i’ve ever read!
Ah Book Lovers, the book that finally helps me understand the Emily Henry hype train and has convinced me to purchase a first class ticket aboard.
Book Lovers answers the question left unanswered by every Halmark film, every small town cosy romance - "What about the bitchy city gf? Where's her happy ever after". And what a delightful answer it is.
Sharp, Witty and utterly swoony - Emily Henry hits the mark with this small town romance turned on its head.
An ode to all the city girls that would rather die than pick a slow, sleepy town over the fast pace, 24hr city life (one for me, one for us).
I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but I was drawn in by the cover and had heard great things about Henry's previous books, so I thought I would give it a try. I loved this book and devoured it in a few days. It's a classic enemies to lovers trope, with just the right amount of humour, spice, and emotion. I love Nora and I love Charlie and I love this book!!
Literary agent Nora agrees to spend a month with her sister away from the city bustle. Hoping to meet an eligible beau, she instead keeps meeting Charlie, the editor she’s trying to escape from. Can the magic of Sunshine Falls bring the pair together?
Book Lovers is a highly entertaining rom-com, with engaging characters and an amusing plot. It kept me interested from the start and I would recommend it for all.
Lovely story, I read this in 1 sitting. Really enjoyable. The characters were believable and relatable. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion
Emily Henry is officially the Queen of the modern rom-com. I fell hopelessly in love with Nora, Charlie and Sunshine Falls and didn’t want the book to end. If you love Schitts Creek, and Rom Coms you will adore this smart, funny, outrageously cute and romantic book.
This book was just what I needed to escape from reality while going through a tough time.
I loved BEACH READ, and BOOK LOVERS has cemented Emily Henry as one of my auto-read authors. I love books that involve the book industry in some way, whether through authors, booksellers/bookstores, or publishing itself, in the love of the written word that shines through even as the reality is twisted somewhat to suit the story (Dusty ringing her agent during a weekend made me recoil in lack of professional boundaries and work/life balance), and I think Charlie is my favourite of Emily Henry’s male leads.
10/10, no notes. ❤️
I enjoyed this book but I dont think I’ll read it again. The characters weren’t my favourite.
The MC’s sister was really selfish and I found her annoying, I wish the MC did more about it.
I still will continue to read Henry’s books, her writing is good and I do enjoy the banter between the live interests.
I love this and honestly Emily Henry’s writing never fails to blow me away with how brilliant it is, I am so in love with the characters
🍸 BOOK REVIEW 🍸
Synopsis: Nora Stephens’ life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.
Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away—with visions of a small town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. If Nora knows she’s not an ideal heroine, Charlie knows he’s nobody’s hero, but as they are thrown together again and again—in a series of coincidences no editor worth their salt would allow—what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves.
Review: Jumping back on the Emily Henry train for a third time, but this time with the hit “Book Lovers”. I’d seen LOTS of raving reviews for this one, and y’all have great taste! It certainly didn’t disappoint, giving us lots of character depth, humour, and the lighthearted storyline we’ve come to know and love from Henry. I loved the character growth and how the story wasn’t super predictable. A little touch of the miscommunication trope (which I usually avoid like the plague) but done in a way that didn’t have me rolling my eyes for the rest of the book. If you need something that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but has a bit more depth than the average rom-com, then this is your book. Highly recommend!
4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So so so so good. While not my favourite Henry book, she continues to impress, with an innate ability to capture the magic of people falling in love (without feeling super cringe).
Her ability to write characters that feel authentic and flawed is second to none and she continues to be a fave of mine in the romance space.
Also I LOVED nora - top tier character for me.
fun, flirty & with Just the right amount of Spice, Emily Henry's ' Book lovers' is yet another example of why She is said by some tobe the new Queen of romance. I really enjoy the enemies to lovers trope and this book was a great read.
Loved this one! As a publishing professional there's nothing more fun than a book set in the publishing world. Very much enjoyed it!
Wonderful, and a perfect rom-com, definitely recommend as a summer read!!! Also great fun for anyone who works with books!
Love, love, love! This is SO good. Great writing, narrative arc, characters… Full Nora Ephron vibes. Hard recommend (and have already recommended many times over).
Words cannot describe how much I loved this book! Nora, Charlie, Libby all perfect characters. An absolutely fantastic summer read I recommend to everyone!
