“For anyone who wants it all,” she begins, “may you find something that is more than enough.”
Emily Henry did it again! Produced an absolute masterpiece of a book that made me laugh, cry, relate and fist bump the air consecutive times while reading.
Book lovers is perfect for you if you enjoy any of the following:
📖Enemies-to-lovers
📖Fierce successful main female lead
📖Heart-felt sisterly bonds
📖Small town drama and romance
📖MC who is a literary agent
📖Books within a book
Nora Stephans aka The Shark, is a literary agent and loves New York as much as she loves books. The only competition her job has is the love she has for her sister Libby. After a rough meeting with a fellow NYC colleague Charlie Lastra, Libby convinces Nora to go on vacation with her to a small town called Sunshine Falls. Nora suspects Libby is keeping something from her, but agrees to go in order to find out what this secret is. Small town to-do-list in hand these sisters set out to make the best of their time in Sunshine falls. At first Nora’s bones ache to get back to the noisy and fast-life of New York but gradually starts to enjoy the small town charm. That is until she walks into Charlie again, and her whole vacation is turned upside down.
She said I have no life.”
“Nora.” He just barely smiles. “You’re in books. Of course you don’t have a life. None of us do. There’s always something too good to read.”
There isn’t a single thing about this book I didn’t love. Nora this amazing MC in all her success gives us glimpses of her fears and her struggle with relationships, and we learn to understand why she and Libby are so close. Their comical and heart-felt sister moments was almost as brilliant as the romance that follows between Nora and Charlie. With both of them loving books as much as their families, you can’t help but root for these two to fall in love and have a bunch of book reading babies.
He tips my jaw up, whispers almost against my lips. “If anyone can negotiate a happy ending, it’s Nora Stephens.”
With all good things the happy ending didn’t come easy, but when it finally all came together I sobbed into my pillow. The ending was executed so perfectly for every character in this book. It was so feel-good my heart felt that it might explode. I will be re-reading this book countless times in the years to come.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I requested this book because I have absolutely adored Emily Henry's previous two books and I've been looking forward to this one since I heard about it.
First thing's first, I loved this book. Nora is a wonderful character - she's incredibly witty and I loved her dry humour. I also really liked that we got to see this badass, powerful woman and how good she is at her job, but we also saw her insecurities, especially about how others perceive her. It's so important that we see more of the double-standard that's expected of women in the working world to be strong but not too strong, or else you're a threat. Emily Henry captured this feeling perfectly and it was brilliant seeing that Nora never gave up anything to be herself, both in her personal life and home life.
The banter between her and her sister was also on point throughout. I really enjoyed the intrigue throughout the book about Libby and her life as well; it really kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. The list was a great addition and I always love when contemporaries add challenges like this with their characters. I liked the small town setting romance mixed with hints of why the main character loves the city - it really felt like a breath of fresh air to see the two sides to it.
Sadly, the book didn't quite get 5 stars like her previous ones but that's because I felt like we didn't see quite enough of the love interest to get as fully invested in him as we did with her previous books. That might just be a me thing though! The romance overall was still well done and I did really like the way Nora and Charlie interacted with one another when they were together, I just wish we'd seen a bit more of it.
Overall, this was a fantastic adult contemporary for anyone who needs a good laugh and wants to see the small-town romance flipped on its head. I will 100% be picking up any future books from Emily Henry and I highly recommend you try this one out.
Thank you so much to Penguin for giving me an ARC of this simply gorgeous book. I absolutely love the way that Emily Henry writes; full of wit and warmth, a truly engaging voice. This story turns the Hallmark movie trope on its head. You know, the one where the city slicker goes home to the sleepy town he came from to save his family’s Christmas tree farm and ends up realising what life is really about as he falls for the wholesome small-town girl. I mean, I love those movies, but as Nora says, they fall in love without really knowing each other.
With this book, Emily Henry gives you something altogether more satisfying than a Hallmark movie. Nora and Charlie understand each other in a way that no one else in their lives can. They slowly share their secrets and hopes, and you’re there every step of the way as they fall in love. But can they make this work? The deep wounds of previous long-distance relationships will surely make their connection impossible.
This also a wonderful love story between sisters and the changing shape of their relationship as their lives take different paths. And of course, as with other Emily Henry novels, an abiding love of books, reading and the creative process, revelling in the way that they bring people and communities together.
A deeply satisfying read. Thoroughly recommend.
This was such a fun but still heart wrenching book. I had mixed expectations going in as I wasn't sure how I would feel but from the start I was invested and in love with all of our characters. Nora is such a fascinating protagonist, she's closed off and very disinterested with having her happy ending but instead focuses on the needs of her sister. I also loved the discussions of 'non-traditional' decisions such as not wanting children which I appreciated. Her sister, Libby annoyed me at times but I did enjoy the dynamic of the sibling relationship and found them so sweet to read about. Charlie was brilliant to me, he and Nora had a great connection and were both very honest with their feelings throughout which I was thankful for. The book made me laugh and cry so I see this as nothing other than a win! It was a five star until the 60% point which is where my attention began to dwindle, this is without a doubt too long and should have been shaved in many sections but it didn't ruin my enjoyment too much.
My thoughts on this book are best summed up by a direct quote from the book itself - 'I want to make it last, and I need to know how it ends. I want to finish it, and I need it to go on forever'. I absolutely loved everything about this book and the story is presented in such a clever way - the writing feels truly unique. This IS a book about Book Lovers which I recommend people who love books picking up when it is out on 3rd May. A massive thanks to NetGallery and Penguin General UK for allowing me to get a copy of this phenomenal book - It is by far the best book I have read by this Author, and one of my absolute favorites this year.
I had hoped this book might make me feel the way Beach Read, my favorite romance, did, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, Book Lovers read a little more romance-y and I absolutely loved it.
Nora was an incredibly well-written character. She is written like the traditional ‘villainous’ women in so many romances, and she’s super relatable, complex, and, honestly, just really funny. I don’t often love sibling relationships in books, but her relationship with Libby was so fun to read about it. They’ve both lived through the same events through different lenses, and it was great to see how it affected them differently.
I did really love Charlie too. I didn’t feel quite as connected to him since we only got him through Nora’s POV, but he had that kind of stern gentleness that I love so much in romance.
The relationship between Nora and Charlie felt really believable and it had a good foundation. They struck up a, reluctant at first, friendship. Though they didn’t think acting on their feelings was a good idea, they didn’t pretend they weren’t there and I found that really refreshing. Their chemistry was spot on. This book was a little spicier than Beach Read, and I thought those scenes were really well done.
If we’re being totally honest, I did put the book down at 95% and sob to my partner at the possibility of there maybe not being a happy ending. Needless to say, this book made me a little emotional.
But that emotional depth is what makes Emily Henry’s books so good. Don’t let the cartoon covers fool you; this book was heart-wrenching. I went from laughing to crying in about five minutes flat. The pacing at which we learned details of Nora and Charlie’s pasts, and Libby’s secrets, was absolutely perfect for building suspense and tension.
This was an intense read, but it was absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait to re-read it. This is an absolute must-read for fans of Beach Read.
Content warnings: Death of a parent, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, illness (stroke,) pregnancy complications, hospitalization, grief, mentions of divorce.
This is my third Emily Henry book, and while I adored Beach Read, I was left cold by People We Meet on Vacation. So I had absolutely no idea what to expect of this one. Fortunately, it hit the spot and I got what I love the most about this genre: an intelligent, well-written romance with lovable characters and the perfect amount of snark and banter.
If you like reading books about books and about people who love books, with some steamy romance and fabulous sisterhood thrown into the mix, then make sure you pick this one up.
This was my first Emily Henry book and boy am I glad I requested it! I’ve worked in the industry for nearly fifteen years and have read enough books to love how she plays with the usual tropes.
Funny, sweet and easily readable, I’m sure I’ll be selling them by the dozen over the summer!
I have read both Beach Read and You and Me On Vacation by Emily Henry, so I was super excited for this book, and it definitely did not disappoint. It gave me everything I was hoping for and expecting from this book, and even more. I was so excited when I got the book, and I devoured it in one day once I started reading it. I can guarantee everyone online will be raving about this book once it is released, and I cannot wait to see what Emily Henry does best. Obviously because of this I will be giving the book 5/5 stars, even though I would give it more if I could.
Nora and Charlie aren't the heroes of any stories - but they have one thing in common and that's their love of books. Nora is a literary agent known as 'The Shark', Charlie is an editor that terrifies everyone, a superpower for best-sellers and Nora's least favourite person in the world.
So Nora is very happy to get away from him and spend the month in Sunshine Falls with her very pregnant sister. The entire is something from the pages of a romance novel (quite literally, actually) - so the sisters know how this goes, they've read enough of them. Maybe she'll meet a cute local boy, who will see past her hard exterior and finally be the one to get the Happy Ever After. But instead, Charlie turns up, clouding up her sunshine.
He wasn't meant to be part of this story, so she'll have to take a page out of another book to get through this.
"When books are your life - or in my case, your job - you get pretty good at guessing where a story is going."
Emily Henrys' writing feels exactly like a warm hug or a really good cup of tea.
She has a way of taking every trope we know and love and use them to create something exciting but beautifully familiar - a real book lover writing books for other book lovers. Complete with witty observations about writing and literature from the first idea to the finished products, she has nailed the art of books about books.
Nora and Charlie were wonderful to meet - we could see beneath their cold, professional outlooks and life and slowly got to know them as we see what's underneath and see an authentic, naturally growing relationship potentially form - we know exactly where this story is going, but the journey there is the real star of the show. Nora and her sister, Libby, were beautiful - a stunning portrayal of a chosen family, a real relationship with ups and downs and lots of love.
Through every chapter, the story flowed naturally like pleasant conversation without any dead space or filler - and it was all too easy to read this in one cosy sitting.
Henry brought in some honest and relatable heartbreak, plenty of self-discovery, and most importantly - plenty of sweet, steamy romance. Once again, Emily Henry has created the perfect beach read (pun intended!)
I really enjoyed this book. It was much spicer than Emily's previous two books, and was really on the level I'm looking for.
The level of book chat in this was wonderful, and I picked up so many book recommendations for the future.
I did struggle with the pacing at times here, and I don't think it was as true an enemies to lovers as some other books I've read with the trope. I would have said it was more of a slow burn friends to lovers.
I liked the relationship between Nora and her sister, and there are also some really interesting depictions of poverty, bereavement, loss, and familial expectations.
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to review this new novel.
On the first page I felt an instant kinship with Nora. Her thoughts could have been mine!
Since I also work in publishing I enjoyed every page but I also loved Nora and Charlie's love story. It was funny, tender and loving.
If you want to read ONE ROMANCE this year, choose this one! I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I really enjoyed this one! The character development is great, the relationships are hot and the setting is perfect.
Will certainly be recommending to my friends.
A romance about people who love and work with books. What more could anyone ask for?
Nora Stephens is a book agent and she will get the best deal that she possibly can for her authors. She is also the bad girl in any romance. She is the girl who puts her career first and gets dumped when her boyfriend discovers that he actually prefers a small time girl who is not career driven. Then her sister insists that they go on a vacation together and she actually finds herself in a small town which is the real life setting for one of her authors’ most successful novels.
I really wanted to read this book and it didn’t disappoint. I loved the character of Nora and the turning upside down of the normal romance evil career girl trope. The relationship between her and her sister was complex and felt real. Their back story was gradually revealed which allowed us to see how the two sisters had come to be as they are. The banter between Nora and Charlie especially their email exchanges was witty and laugh out loud funny in places. I also really enjoyed the actual book editing. Their jobs weren’t just something to hang the plot on but an important aspect of the story.
I really enjoyed this book and am grateful to Net Galley and Penguin UK for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Yet another five star read for Emily Henry! I have read all three of her adult books and every single one has drawn out emotions in my that is rare when I’m reading.
This book is for people who love books and everything about books. This isn’t just a romance, this is so much more and it was everything I was and wasn’t expecting.. I related so much to Nora especially in the older sibling aspect and wanting to fix everything and be in control.
Charlie was a swoon machine and I want nothing but the best for him. The banter between Charlie and Nora had me laughing out loud and smiling so much that my face hurt.
Well I don’t know what to say other than I bloody loved this book! I literally laughed out loud at the back and forth between Nora & Charlie and I just didn’t want the book to end! Books like this are just *chefs kiss* and it’s been quite a long time since I’ve stayed up till 3am finishing a romance! But I was hooked! Please buy this book you will not be disappointed!! Thank you Emily & netgalley for the chance to read an arc of this book early!
This was such a wholesome and fun story that came to me at a perfect time. It was everything I wanted and needed! If your looking for pure escapism for the summer, pick this book up!
I had such high hopes for this. The premise sounded amazing and it started off so well but I have a lot of problems with this book. Mostly, though, I'm so disappointed because I really thought I would end up loving it.
First of all, this is supposedly about two 'rivals' and if you're looking for an enemies to lovers, like I was, then this isn't the book for you. The enmity is supposedly established by the prologue but I never felt like it existed or was convinced by it. I'm annoyed by how misleading the blurb is. I would not classify this as an enemies to lovers in any aspect.
Speaking of the romance, it was okay. I don't really have strong feelings about it and it just wasn't swoon-worthy for me personally. I did like a lot of the exchanges they had early on and in the first half, there were many laugh out loud moments. So, it's not the worst romance I've ever read but definitely not the best either.
Something I loved was the insight into publishing we got and all of the bookish elements we got. As a book lover, I loved reading this. Henry did this aspect of the book so well that this is probably my favourite element of the book.
Nora's character was good. Like the romance, I don't really have strong feelings about it but while I was reading it, I did enjoy her perspective.
I'm a bit meh about her relationship with her sister just because I found the sister a little annoying. But it wasn't terrible. I do think it's one of the stronger aspects of the book, it just wasn't for me because I didn't really care for her sister.
Overall, I'm really disappointed. I was so excited about this but it just didn't work for me. I will probably continue reading more of Henry's works though because it wasn't terrible and I did read this in like a day. So, if the whole book had been as strong as the first half, I could have loved this book.
Nora is a literary agent working in New York, she loves city life and working hard in her field. Her longtime client has blown up and her sister, Libby, offers to take Nora on a month long trip to the small town where the book was set. Libby is pregnant with her third baby and Nora doesn’t want to miss out on a chance to spend quality time with her sister. She just doesn’t expect to bump into Charlie Lastra, the editor who passed on her clients most popular novel…
This is a book that grew on me as it developed. I liked that it was weighted fairly evenly between a romantic plot line and her relationship with her sister. I really related to Nora a lot and I enjoyed seeing things from her point of view. The actual romance worked for me, I appreciated that they didn’t compromise themselves and understood each other. I felt the ending was a little rushed but it worked fine. It was a cute, easy read and I liked the slower pace of it.
Is it my favourite Emily Henry? I don’t think so? But it is one I would read again and if you enjoyed her other books this one is just as typically cute with an emotional backstory.
'One summer. Two rivals. A plot twist they didn’t see coming…'
To say I loved this story is an understatement! So much so that I immediately went and preordered a signed edition! Do yourselves a favour and do the same!!!!
Sisters Nora and Libby go off for a vaccay together to a small town where their favourite novel was set with a checklist of stuff they have to do.
I cackled a lot reading this and spent most of my time with a smile on face, my son asking me what was so funny!
Now let me talk first about Nora and one of my fave things.....a checklist......apart from the dating checklist, Nora is me:
'Do you really have the emotional resilience to leave a checklist unchecked?
Something in me twitches. I really do love a checklist.'
I loved Nora and Libby, their love, their sisterhood, their banter and the fact that they want the best for each other, always.
Charlie is everything I always want in a male lead, broody, sarcastic and cutting! Their banter was golden, he was basically Nora's other half, they fit and I was rooting for them from the get go!
The story coupled with the fabulous humour, small town vibe setting and heartwarming romance made my life!
This truly the ultimate book for books lovers and defo on my reread pile!
