i cant even pretend to be cool calm and collected whilst reviewing this book because i feel SO MUCH RIGHT NOW and am practicing insane self control by not writing this entire thing in capital letters.
this book??? is a masterpiece??? i don’t think in my entire lifetime i have ever rooted for a couple as much as i did for these two. like by the end i was ready to give up MY life for them two to somehow find the perfect in between state and everyone be satisfied. but then then end was even more beautiful and perfect than anything i came up with. and i am so happy and wow the tears i was shedding in that final chapter.
i absolutely ADORED the queen that is nora. she was, as charlie would agree, perfect. she was written so well and she felt so REAL and i loved her and wow i think i want to be her when i grow up. i loved her and libby, which surprised me because sometimes i’m not obsessed with the - everything i do i do for my sister trope - but something about this one. chefs kiss.
and then of course, naturally, i should absolutely touch on the angel of a man that was charlie lastra. it should be ILLEGAL to make a fictional man that… stunning? because now there is a charlie shaped hole in my life that i need filled immediately. he was the perfect balance of everything. snark and wit but tender and sweet. i absolutely will be seeking reparations for forcing me to fall in love with ANOTHER MAN.
everyone needs to pick this book up as soon as they possibly can because i don’t think i’ll ever stop thinking about it. even when i started this i had to pry my kindle from my hands so i didn’t stay up until 6am to read it in one go. i already need to reread this.
and finally, thank you so so much to netgalley and penguin for the chance to read this wonderful book!!
Thank you for this advanced copy. I didn't enjoy this book as well as her last two, but it was still a cute love story. the first chapter or so were my favorites when they were making fun of all the similar plots found in books. I laughed so hard when Charlie's mom text him about Nora and he asked if she was leaving dad. There are some good one liners in this book. It was a cute love story, but overall I thought it wasn't as exciting as the previous two.
I never thought flirtation could take place during an editing session but this has definitely opened my eyes to the potential of track changes!
Joking aside, this is a gorgeous mix of romance, attraction and genuine emotion, not many writers can manage all three but Emily Henry just gets better and better.
Emily Henry can truly put no foot wrong in my eyes. I adored this book and flew through it - I got a notification on my birthday that I had been invited to view the book (thank you so much to the publisher for this!!!) and that was that - my evening was set.
Detailed descriptions, excellent world building and the cosy simplistic backdrop of Sunshine Falls allowed for a real connection to form with both characters. Characters were so fully formed in my mind by the end of the book, I genuinely felt a bit sad to let them go. The shared dry humour and honesty between Nora and Charlie added to the tangible attraction of these two, where every glance or touch was acknowledged, building up to a delectably satisfying romance.
I love the almost ‘90s rom com Hollywood’ style of writing Henry used with the characters, acknowledging the romantic archetypes and tropes they fell in to throughout; the shameless fun of this and bringing the reader ‘into the know’ made me long for a truly good rom-com to appear on screen again! Please someone, adapt this and bring it to the cinema!
A gorgeously satisfying read from start to finish. I (as always), eagerly await Ms Henry’s next book while I sing from the rooftops about this.
Thank you again to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my most anticipated release of the year and it did not disappoint. Emily Henry is truly the queen of contemporary romance - all of her books truly do make you feel attached to the main characters. I was really invested in Nora and Charlie as characters and I loved seeing their romance developed. I also loved how much of their story revolved around their own issues with their family as I enjoyed seeing other elements to the story aside from the romance. Libby and Nora's relationship as sisters was also absolutely wonderful and I really enjoyed seeing them solve their issues with each other. This wasn't quite as good as You and Me on Vacation but it was still pretty amazing.
This book follows Nora, a workaholic, who always puts her family before everything. We follow Nora on a real journey of self discovery throughout this book.
I really loved this book, it was so sweet and the slow burn I needed so very badly in my life. Charlie is literally the perfect sarcastic book boyfriend, I loved him.
Nora was slightly annoying but she got better in the second half and I ended up really loving her.
I rated this book 5 stars and I already can't wait to re-read a physical copy when it comes out!
Oh my. This book has been such a joy to read!
I enjoyed every Emily Henry’s book so far, so I knew that I have a great read on my hands as soon as I started, but this one has definitely stolen my heart a little. And it has definitely been needed in the middle of the busy book fair season.
I’m always cautious reading the books about publishing, seeing it’s my industry and it’s rarely portrayed in the very “real” way, but I have really enjoyed the portrayal of both main characters here. Nora and Charlie have been an absolute pleasure to read about, and I have enjoyed their story very much.
I also liked how much emphasis on family there’s been in ‘Book Lovers’. Though two very much different family dynamics, both Nora and Charlie’s family relationships have been super interesting to read about, and allowed the reader to get to know both characters better.
Overall, a great book, and a contemporary romance I will be recommending to everyone.
Emily Henry’s books are pure magic. Getting exclusive access to her newest one in the mail from NetGalley is magical too, I almost screamed. She’s on my preorder list forever and I’ll gobble up everything she’ll write. As soon as I started Book Lovers, I knew this would be on the same level of Beach Read and maybe it would have even topped it. I was right. I’m not sure if I loved it more than Beach Read, but definitely as much as. Nora and Charlie were delightful, so smartly written and with the best banter ever, the one Emily Henry has spoiled us into being used to, because she’s the best, and it’s always so funny and adorable. The love that Nora has for her sister Libby is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, I adored their relationship so much. And the books! Sunshine Falls! Curl Up ‘N’ Dye and Poppa Squat! I burst out laughing several time while reading this book and I couldn’t stop thinking about it (and laughing and sighing because it was. Just. So. Good.). I wanted to savor it, but I couldn’t stop reading, as it always is with Emily’s books. Book Lovers is a little gem and one of the best romcoms you’ll read this year, so read it, you won’t be sorry (just laughing and crying and swooning and then sad to have finished it). Thank you so much to Penguin Random House UK and Emily Henry for my ARC. I loved it!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Book Lovers is the latest release from Emily Henry and I was so so excited when I saw this book available for request on NetGalley.
This was one of my most anticipated reads for 2022 and part of me was afraid that it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. However I did not need to worry as I absolutely loved this book. On the surface this is an enjoyable and captivating romance but underneath there is something very special about this book that is hard to put into words. It follows the main character Nora as she navigates her changing relationship with her sister and her will they/won’t they relationship with book editor Charlie as they all end up in the same small town for a few weeks. The book is so well written with relatable and realistic characters who I immediately fell in love with. I had a smile on my face the whole way through this book thanks to the natural chemistry and humour of the characters.
This is easily a 5 star read and I would recommend to everyone who enjoys a good romance.
This was a lovely read. I loved everything from the story, to the characters and the plot. I really liked how the story began and the ended was expected, in a way, but I, definitely, wouldn't have wanted the alternative. So, I am happy with the end as it is. It made me fall in love again with romance books after I took a break from them. And I found a new favourite author :)
The new novel by Emily Henry, “Book Lovers”, is delightful. Having read and loved her other two (with Beach Read perhaps edging to the fore every so slightly), I was so pleased to receive the Digital Review Copy (DRC) of Book Lovers.
Nora is an endearing and sometimes frustrating main character, making her absolutely human and all the more well rounded and brilliant because of it. She describes herself, in romcom terms, as the icy blonde career girlfriend who gets dumped for the beautifully glowy, cottage-core woman the man meets over a failing chocolate shop/holiday inn/florist-meet-pet groomers. It’s exactly this kind of new perspective which makes Emily Henry’s books so enjoyable, always bringing a different story.
Her baby sister, Libby, is pregnant with her third child and cajoles Nora into taking a trip with her. They find themselves in Sunshine Falls, the setting for one of Nora’s author’s most popular books. It’s a kind of Bedford Falls meets Stars Hollow small town - way out of Nora’s city comfort zone but she’ll do basically anything for her sister, so off she goes.
While there is a romantic will they/won’t they, it’s the relationships explored alongside that I find myself invested in. Nora and Libby are very different in personalities but they’re bound together with being sisters, but also their deeper shared experiences of growing up with their mother as their anchor. Nora’s feeling of responsibility contributes to Libby’s feeling of her being over-protected despite being an adult with kids and a husband outside of their relationship.
That being said, Nora’s quest to find a handsome, small town lumberjack/shepherd are very entertaining, and her attempts at getting out of the dates she’s been setup on, and the subsequent conversations, are great too. Charlie is of course, a big part of the story and while not wanting to give too much away, I felt like it was A part of Nora’s story rather than THE story. I don’t want to give away too much of the story as I enjoy being surprised at where it goes, but I will say this: Emily Henry writes excellent leading men, ones you want to hang out with not just because they have good forearms but they also know their way round a Nora Ephron. They’re also human beings who have insecurities and likes and favourite jumpers and they’re not just A Man.
I’ve read a fair amount of romcoms, and I really enjoyed picking out the tropes - some of these are overt references and discussed in the book, and some of them are much more subtle. Nora meets a handsome man who is also clever, he actually left the small town to go to college and is actually just a human being. It’s done so gently and with both a wink and affection, it’s impossible not to smile as you spot more references of your own.
Two reasons I know this book is good: the first is that they mention a series of fictional novels, most of which I want to read and includes a January Andrews book (one of the main characters from Beach Read), so it’s a nice nod to that too. The second is that I found myself to be so invested in the characters that I was rooting for them, I was trying to come up with solutions to solve their problems and basically, as usual, I wanted to hang out with them for a coffee/burger in Sunshine Falls.
Recommended for anyone who likes good stories with great characters, that will make you laugh and somehow make you cry as it touches your own life in ways you weren’t really expecting it to.
A quick, easy and amazing read that was well written and flowed really well. I loved the story and the characters were well developed and loveable. I love the front cover too its probably my favourite of hers so far. I loved it.
It was a typical romance with the haters to lovers cliche. Visiting a remote town away from the city … and I loved every bit of it!
The characters were great, i really liked the different personalities and how they complimented each other. They were all really likeable, despite first impressions. In fact, they were very genuine and it felt like you actually knew them in real life. Which made it quite sad when the book finished.
The storyline was cute and the fact it was based on books is a winner for any bookworm. I was rooting for Nora and Charlie from the start! Their chemistry was great.
Overall it was an enjoyable read, made my heart beat and smile. Loved the ending. It was a real heart warming, easy read.
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin general UK for the opportunity to read and review this Arc.
My favourite Emily Henry yet! Hot and sweet and completely believable. Wonderful. Thanks to Penguin for the review copy!
This is a cosy, not quite enemies to lovers, romance. Our heroine has been cast as a villain in others romances, but actually is just a loving sister who’d do anything for her sister, even if it means forgoing her own preferences and life. We never quite see whether our hero actually disliked our heroine initially, as she feels about him, but it’s nice to see how their relationship evolves. I really enjoyed reading this, and could see it being made into a hallmark movie in the future
Phwoar!! This was such a gem! I thought I wasn’t really a romantic or one for romantic fiction. but scrap that – I so am!! When it’s this good I am.
I adored Book Lovers by Emily Henry. I just couldn’t get enough of it. It’s one of those books that coils itself around your heart. Simple, light but an absolute delight.
Nora is the alternative protagonist - she’s the cold-hearted, career-driven ice queen (apparently) who usually sits on the sidelines and gets dumped when the main guy finds real love on his small town journey of self discovery. But in this book we get her story and it’s gorgeous. Nora’s journey of self-discovery, her beautiful relationship with her sister and the very satisfying enemies-to-lovers trope had me hooked.
I didn’t want it to end and I’ve not felt like that about a book in ages. I laughed (some of the quips!), I cried and I read into the night beaming at the romance and willing it on.
It’s an easy read, and bookworms will adore all the book-love running through it! It’s also a love letter to New York and a peek at the publishing industry from the inside too.
Absolutely recommend this one if you’re after an easy but heartfelt read 😊
How is it that Emily Henry writes so well that every character tethers to my heart? I cried so hard at this book. This is her best book yet! Charlie and Nora are just incredibly well developed characters and I'm struggling to comprehend that they aren't real people. Emily gave them so much life. Everyone should read this book, it's romance in the best form. I loved the Libby & Nora's dynamic & the subplot of their mother's death.
Thank you so much to Penguin Random House UK for sending me an ARC! My opinions are my own.
Emily Henry is a must read author for me so I was delighted to get early access to Book Lovers.
I loved Nora. I would love to be more like her. Her relationship with her sister, Libby, was so well written and I loved the setting of Sunshine Falls. Nora and Charlie are one of my favourite ever book couples and I hated having to finish their story. I rooted for them from beginning to end.
If you liked/loved Emily's previous books you will like/love this.
I adored this book. Emily Henry definitely knows her audience and has created an utterly joyous romanic comedy. Even though the main protagonist Nora is of the opinion that romantic tropes are tired and overused, Ms Henry uses the work rival turned love interest in such a smart way - setting the readers expectation for what is going to happen, using it to create an engaging story around two of the wittiest characters that I have come across recently. Charlie and Nora share the same delicious sense of humour; the banter between the pair had me smiling as I turned each page eager to read the latest bon mot out of their mouths. As events transpire to bring them together, it soon becomes obvious that their life goals and responsibilities are closely aligned, but that each has reason to have built up defensive walls around themselves. As they open up to each other, and let down their defences, I absolutely adored speculating all the possible futures for them.
It's a brilliant book and Emily Henry is now on my list go 'must read' authors.
My thanks go to the publishers and NetGalley for the advanced copy in return for an honest review.
An enjoyable light hearted read. I enjoyed how our female isn't a soft whimsical character but someone with power, attitude and personality. Took me a while to get into the book and root for them but it was a very humorous and warming book! Perfect for a bit of escapism.
