The best on this subject so far is in my opinion Tim Keller’s Counterfeit Gods. I recently also read Kyle Idleman’s Gods at War, in which the subject is counterfeit gods as well. I don’t think Idleman’s book is as good as the one from Tim Keller, but there are enough reasons left to read this book.
Idleman describes in each chapter a different god that might have too much influence in your life. Each chapter finished with questions to reflect on your life and a small paragraph on how you can turn to Jesus on the particular subject.
This is done is done with a lot of examples, both from the authors own life as well as biblical stories. This all reads really easy.
The book talks about the god of food, sex, entertainment, success, money, achievement, romance, family and finally me. With a pleasant writing style and a lot of anecdotes the books reads easy. Still I took more than average effort to reach the end.
But at the end I think Kellers book is more realistic. Idlemans book can provoke you to help you to see in which areas you lack Gods influence. But in the end all he says is that you need to give this to Jesus.
I think this is a process which Keller admits more and I really like the last chapter of Counterfeit Gods in which he talks about the process of replacing the counterfeit Gods with the real true God.
