This is a perfect summer/beach read! The setting & the descriptions make you hear the ocean & feel the sun. Whit is a super fun lead character & also her family/friends want her to solve mysteries, which is such a pleasant change to most cozy series. The murder is connected to a feud between two families, what started it no one seems to remember anymore, so I enjoyed Whit having to dig into the past. I love when the protagonist is solving a crime from the past that’s ties in with the current one. Overall I’ve really enjoyed this series so far & I definitely think it should be on people’s summer TBR pile.
Protagonist Whitney Dagner owns Dame of the Sea gift shop on lovely Santa Catalina island in California. She occasionally helps her brother, Nick, give tours in a glass bottom boat. Whit is close to her grandmother, Goldy, who enjoys helping out in the shop. Currently, Goldy’s on a rock painting craze that tourists seem to like. Whit’s best friend, Maribel, mans the front desk at the police station. Whiskers is Whit’s lovable rescue cat.
When rival bird watchers come across a body at the 18th hole, something odd happens. Instead of calling the police, the responding park ranger calls his kinfolks, the Ahern Family, who arrive enmasse. The victim is a member of the Franklin Family who the Aherns have feuded with for years! The Franklin Family asks Whit to look into the suspicious death. The more question she asks; the more threats she receives.
At times, I found the story wordy and wandering, and not enough action. There was plenty of humor, and the main characters are as likeable as they were in book one. I wasn’t totally surprised at the killers identity. The ending was abrupt with a quick wrap-up. I enjoyed book one much more.
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this story. The writing was crisp with a comfortable tone making it easy to follow along. The mystery’s execution kept me in the game with a solidly wicked plot, the suspect pool, a few red herrings, some comedic interludes, and a whodunit that I could not put down until all was said and done. The setting comes alive with the visually descriptive narrative, engaging dialogue, and the small-town atmosphere. With a strong cast of characters, this tale pulls you in and you can’t help but escape with Whitney and her friends in this delightfully charming series.
Still wish the author would flesh out the characters more. Still don't like Whitney's grandmother, but happy we learn more details about Whitney's parents.
The treasure maps and subsequent activities mentioned in the first book are put to good use here.
I like the covers for this series, they're a bit different and definitely eye catching which is why I wanted to read the blurbs and get started with the series. Since the cat is a feature on the covers and in the series name, I feel it's appropriate to mention that in the stories so far, Whitney's cat plays a minimal role, so if you're looking for or expecting a cat to play a big role like Sneaky Pie Brown or Midnight Louie, that is not the case.
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I adored Gabby Allan's Much Ado About Nauticaling so I was excited to get the chance to read her newest book Something Fishy This Way Comes.
The first thing I want to say is that I love her titles and their take on classics, but with that nautical twist. Also, her covers are so appealing with their bright colors that just scream summer, and I will admit, the cover cat Whiskers who I swear could be kin to my Marmalade they look so much alike!
Speaking of Whiskers, I think he or she ( I cannot for the life of me remember if the cat is male or female ) and Whitney make the cutest detective duo, they are both so fun.
Whitney again finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery, this time it involves a feud between two families.
I love the setting on Catalina, Gabby Allan makes it come to life for me and gives it such a cozy feel, and I was glad to be able to pay it another visit. She makes you want to call your travel agent and book you a room ASAP. I suggest you put it on your vacation bucket list because I have been there and loved it!
Allan writes colorful characters that really add to the store, doesn't matter if they are the main or the secondary characters, they are all vibrant and entertaining. In both books, my favorite is Goldie, Whitney's grandmother who adds excellent comedic parts to the story with her quirkiness.
A Little Note to first-time readers, this is the second book in the Whit and Whiskers Mystery Series, but you can totally pick it up today and read it without needing to read Much Ado About Nauticaling....but if you do, be sure to go back and read the first one because if you like Something Fishy This Way Comes you will love Much Ado!
This is the second book in the cozy series "Whitney and Whiskers". I enjoyed the first in series . I love returning to the island of Catalina where i have spent many happy vacations. The author captures Catalina in all its beauty and wildness in this series. Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley. My review opinion is my own.
Whitney is helping her brother run Nautically Yours, the family tourism business. She runs a gift shop and shares duties of the glass bottom boat they own. When a customers takes his own life Whit doesn’t believe it’s suicide. She begins to investigate and finds a feud in his background . Soon she finds out the bad feelings went on for generations and may have caused his death. I liked this next in series. The setting is picturesque and charming. The author writes strong charcters that all add to the series. A intriguing sleuth that kept me guessing to conclusion..
It’s time to go back to Catalina Island with the second fun Whit and Whiskers Mystery by Gabby Allan, Something Fishy This Way Comes.
Whitney Dagner, owner of a gift shop on Catalina Island, is hiding a treasure chest on the golf course for a customer when she finds two men arguing over a dead body at the designated spot. It appears Leo Franklin was run over by a golf cart, but when Jake Ahern, the park ranger, calls his relatives instead of the cops, the Aherns all insist Leo committed suicide.
After Whitney reports the death, the actual police show up. Only then does she learn the confusing story about a long-running feud between the Aherns and the Franklins, a feud revived when Leo courted an Ahern relative. Although Whitney does not consider herself an amateur sleuth, even Whitney’s own grandparents expect her to find Leo’s killer because the police chief sides with the Aherns in claiming it’s suicide. Together with her best friend and her boyfriend, a police diver, Whitney digs into past island history to find the roots of the feud and the murder.
The follow-up to Much Ado about Nauticaling is another humorous mystery with an emphasis on the island lifestyle and attractions. The cast of eccentric characters is just perfect for a cozy mystery.
Whilst the beginning of this mystery is over-written and expositional, it evens out into an intriguing romp of a read. The protagonist is sometimes a little insufferable but always swings it back around into being loveable again. Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.
Catalina Island is home to its own version of Romeo and Juliet as members of two long-feuding families fall in love and plan to marry. But like the ill-fated Shakespeare characters, Leo and Janina find themselves separated by death.
I saw Gabby Allan at an author event in the fall of 2021 and thought she was great, super friendly and funny. The first Whit and Whiskers mystery I thought was a great reflection of her, fun and funny and engaging. Unfortunately I felt like this book was a bit less polished and I found parts of it difficult to follow. I love the island setting and the main circle of characters is great. Whitney is smart and creative, Goldy is sassy and loving as is Whitney's grandfather. The romance with Felix seems to be heating up a bit, which is going to be interesting to watch.
What I struggled with was the peripheral characters who were part of the feud between the two large island families. There were a lot of characters and because there were so many, they weren't well-developed. While I don't mind that because it did keep the story moving, I found myself many times thinking "who's that again?" I also couldn't keep track of the clues as Whitney was discovering them and didn't feel like her thought process was explained.
Overall, I don't really mind getting a bit lost in the story as long as it moves quickly, keeps me chuckling and gives me something pretty to "look at." Though I preferred the first book to this one, I did enjoy this book and highly recommend this fun series!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
Really enjoyed this book. It will keep you guessing with lots of red herrings! The characters are very relatable and such a delight! Good solid plot! Highly recommend this one! Thanks #netgalley and #Keningston for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Something Fishy this way Comes by Gabby Allen is the second book in the Whit and Whisker’s mystery series. Whitney returned to Catalina Island off the coast of California to escape from the corporate world in Los Angeles. She is helping her brother run Nautically Yours, the family tourism business. She runs a gift shop and shares piloting duties of the glass bottom boat they own. When one of their best customers takes his own life Whit doesn’t believe it’s suicide. As she looks into it she finds a generations-long feud between the dead man's family and the local Ahern clan. It gets more and more dangerous for her as she investigates the reason for the feud. Loved the story and the characters. Would like to see more of Whiskers. I did get a little irritated at the authors sentence structure and run on sentences. That will not stop me from reading her other books though.
I requested and received a free e-book copy from Kensington Books via NetGalley. Thank you for approving me and allowing me to read this wonderful murder mystery!

Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of SOMETHING FISHY THIS WAY COMES (Book 2 of the Whit and Whiskers Mysteries) by Gabby Allan in exchange for an honest review. I liked it. I enjoyed the first book in the series and have been waiting for this one. I recommend the series to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring island life and tourist attractions.

Not one of my usual favorite cozy subjects, but Whit and Whiskers sure make this diversion a fun time.
Plot: I really enjoyed the plot of this one! The mystery kept me guessing, and this was one of those mysteries where I kept changing my mind about which person I thought was the culprit.
Characters: The characters in this series are all great, from Whit, to her family, her boyfriend, her best friend, and all the quirky residents of the island!
The Cover: I like it!
Overall: This was another excellent book in the Whit And Whiskers series. I highly recommend these books to anyone looking for a new cozy mystery to read!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
I received this ARC via Netgalley and Kensington Books, in return for an honest review. While the second book in this series, it is easily read as a standalone. This is a fun cozy series, set on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of California. With the two family businesses divided between Whitney’s locally sourced gift shop and her brother taking over their charter boat tour business, maybe Whitney’s irrepressible grandparents might slow down a bit. No, not so much when murder makes an appearance!
Whit, cat Whiskers, her police diver boyfriend, and her police dispatcher roommate are pulled into a long-running feud between two island families, ala Hatfields and McCoys. When she discovers the body of young Leo Franklin, there’s a concerted push to label his death a suicide, although he’d just become engaged and turned his life around. Unfortunately, Leo’s fiancée was from ‘that other family’ so tensions were running high and lots of accusations are hurled across the family boundaries. Whit resolves to research both the feud’s origination and how it might tie into the current death. She’s also hoping to influence the mainland coroner, when he ever arrives, to not believe the Sheriff that it’s suicide but examine all the evidence for possible foul play.
This continues to be a gentle cozy mystery. While I find Whit’s grandmother a bit over the top, she does add quirkiness to the storyline. All the characters are well written and easy to track over the course of the mystery. I look forward to the next in this series.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for giving me the opportunity to read and give my honest review of the second book in the great Whit and Whiskers mystery series. I loved how Whit, Nick, their grandparents (Goldy and Pops), and their local friends get together to solve the murder of one of their local neighbors. Also enjoyed the chemistry between Felix and Whit. Can’t wait to read more books in this series and giving Kudos to Gabby Allan (aka Misty Simon) for writing this amazing page turning edge of your seat mystery series. Highly recommend this to all mystery lovers.
Book 2 in the Santa Catalina Mystery Series, Something Fishy This Way Comes was a fun cozy mystery.
Since returning home from mainland California and finding her groove with the family tourism business, Whitney Dagner’s daily routine has become a wonderfully chaotic adventure. She and her nimble kitty, Whiskers, often find themselves at the center of the action on Catalina, from staged treasure hunts to gossipy birdwatchers. But before Whit can get too comfortable in the place where she grew up, a gift shop order leads to a stunning discovery—someone’s dead body . . .
One of Whit’s best boat tour client’s, Leo Franklin was young and newly engaged when he unceremoniously took his own life. Only it doesn’t seem like that’s what really happened—not after the suspicious activity displayed by his family’s old rivals at the scene of his death. As a bitter, generations-long feud between Leo’s kin and the local Ahern clan comes to a head, Whit and her police diver not-so-ex-boyfriend must lead a dangerous investigation into years of scandal and bad blood to figure out who’s innocent . . .and who’s covering a killer’s tracks.
I didn’t enjoy this book. I just wasn’t hooked and had a hard time getting into it. The characters are not that well rounded. The mystery is interesting though. #SomethingFishyThisWayComes #NetGalley
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Kensington Books and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I truly appreciate a good cozy mystery, suspenseful, entertaining and thrilling. The second one in a series can stand alone. I suggest reading both as the series is delightful.
