This book was not what I was expecting- in a good way. It has ghosts, an old camp ground in need of repair, and isolation. There is no gore, just a story that you can’t put down.

Whoa! This book is EXCELLENT!!!!!
Incredibly well written, spookily atmospheric, creepy and intriguing.
Once I started it I couldn’t stop - it’s a real page Turner.
Perfect for your lazy beach holiday or whilst travelling, this is a definite recommendation from me.
A triumph!

Nora goes with husband Paul to his parents home where they meet up with other members of his family. Along with the challenges of finding her place in the family, she finds herself in the middle of a mystery. Her sister-in-law's special knives start disappearing one at a time in seemingly impossible ways.

Is the home haunted? Is there mischief or something more sinister to blame? Part thriller, part, part ghost story. Great for those who enjoy a slow build of suspense and a more non-traditional story telling format.

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Poisoned Pen Press and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

Engaging from the beginning. Well written with characters that hold the story together.

After the death of her husband, Nakia. Nora marries The best friend Paul. She travels north with him and her new stepson Leon to help fix up the family home and summer camp called Hidden Lake. She is also going to help take care of his parents who he calls Emmett and Elizabeth. He has cancer and she has dimencha, But upon arriving at hidden Lake the first people she meat is her new brother-in-law gave and his wife sailish and their four children. She becomes close to Joannes the 16-year-old and Lily the 3 1/2 year-old. The eight-year-old Timothy is a future serial killer or at least he acts like one. Strange things start happening such as Salish’s knives go missing in the females in the family get cuts on their chest. Nora is a photographer and document most of the happenings around the house, But it’s worth a Camera Mrs that she really should’ve been paying attention to. I thought the plot was a great idea, but there were things I didn’t understand. For example Salish cooked for everyone, Paul fixed up the cabinets and of course Nora videotaped things going on around the camp. What I didn’t understand is these are things that normally happen when they family comes together but everyone in this family got paid even 16 year old Jones was paid for helping her dead the ornithologist put up bird houses. I also found Nora unlikeable at least to me. She was the type of person who thought just because she knew someone who did something it made her an expert in that situation. Not only that she throughout the book analyzes everyone and their mental issues, but doesn’t recognize that she is living in the past and solely focused on her dead husband even to the point that at the end she claims he’s going to help her take care and be there in her future. I found that weird and it didn’t make sense. that up this girl is so smart and can recognize personality issues and mental problems with others she doesn’t recognize it that isn’t healthy. Also I didn’t get why Emmett was so rude and mean to her… I get it he was a jerk and an abusive father but he said the most foul things to her from the very beginning and I didn’t get that. Either way as I said the plot was good I just didn’t like a lot of the characters with the exception of the children… Well not Tim but they so much lol! As far as recommending this book I would because as my husband says most people don’t realize the things I see in the book when reading it. So I think most people would like this book and I’m not saying I didn’t I just didn’t like most of the characters. most of all I didn’t understand the main character Nora nor most of the things the family decided throughout the book. As far as horror stories go and get this three stars and if you like horror you will probably like this book. Having said all this I am still interested in reading future stories by the Sauthor she has a great talent for plot and I found her wording refreshing. I was given this book by net Gally and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any grammar or punctuation errors as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

Thirteen knives (unlucky number, to start) mysteriously disappear under lock and key and Nora and her newlywed husband, Paul, go to his parent's old summer camp home. The home is in disarray, so Paul and his brother, Gabe, are on a mission to repair the damages the years of not being used have caused. When circumstances occur that cannot be explained by logic, Nora begins documenting the paranormal that is occurring at the abandoned summer camp of Hidden Lake.

There are very few books in the paranormal realm that I have read. I do wish that the book's blurb stressed the ghost/paranormal overtone. As someone that does not believe in ghosts, this is not a book I likely would have picked up on my own..

Thank you Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for this ARC of Book of Knives by Lisa Haines

Nora and her new husband, Paul travel to his parent's place, Hidden Lake to take care of his ailing parents and renovate the surrounding camp grounds. They will be spending the next several months there along with his brother Gabe, Gabe's wife and their children as well as Paul's son from a previous relationship. Upon having dinner together, Gabe's wife shows everyone her prizes possession, a collection of knives. Soon after, knives start going missing along with unexplained occurrences.

This surely is a unique book. I often found myself confused with the dialogue and way this story is told. I found this to feel like I was reading a dream, where scenes appear out of nowhere from one to the next and the dialogue feels like a discombobulated conversation at times. However, this author somehow made it work. It was as creepy as it was intriguing. While this is definitely not for everyone, it is for those who loved classics along the lines of Shirley Jackson.

I love camp mysteries and this is especially delicious one. This is one of those books that you can’t go into a lot of detail or you’ll spoil the plot but suffice to say I absolutely liked it. I will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page.

I really, really enjoyed this book! It was captivating and it hooked me from the very first chapter! I was glued to my seat!

This book definitely has an interesting voice, and felt very somber and almost melancholic - which I feel fits the main character well, as well as the tone that the book is going for. Unfortunately, the rest of the story didn’t really hold up for me, and I felt like I was muddling through most of the story trying to figure out what was going on. I may need to reread the book to figure out exactly what happened, because at the end of the book I felt a little bit confused - and maybe that is what the author was going for, but it just didn’t really work for me. I think maybe if you’re into gothic horror this may be the book for you, but as it was, there were moments this book gripped me and had me interested only for that feeling to go away after a few pages.
