This book seriously made me sad. Sandy pined after Hank for 15 years, while he went off and married (and divorced) someone else. Since she was the one to break off the relationship and cut off contact, it was understandable that he married another woman. I feel like Sandy's family really failed her here in not insisting that she apply to other colleges. Surely there were more affordable in-state colleges that she could have attended and not felt so left behind by all her friends. While the 15 years did provide growth and life experiences to shape the adults they became, Sandy's experience really bothered me probably more than it should have.
3.5*
Just another rom-com?!🤷🏻♀️
Sandy and Hank were high school sweethearts growing up in a small town. They also shared dreams that stretched far beyond their tiny city limits. Hank, an aspiring musician and Sandy a very talented artist.
Hank is thrilled he’s been accepted to university, but the celebration is short-lived when they come to the realization that Sandy can’t leave. With a broken heart and no other choice she makes the ultimate sacrifice to just let him go.
Fast forward 15 years. Hank has returned to visit his family and friends. Could there still be a spark between the two? Or has too much time passed?
I loved the trope of a second chance romance. But I just failed to connect with the characters and felt like I was just watching it play out from a distance rather than up close and personal.
I need to “feel” my rom coms… and I just couldn’t get there.🙁
A buddy read with Susanne who enjoyed this one a bit more than I did.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing
Thank you NetGalley, Berkley publishing, and Kerry Winfrey for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! I’ve wanted to read a book by Winfrey for a long time and I’m glad that I finally did! This is a super cute second-chance romance filled with childhood memories, funny moments, and great character development.
This book follows Sandy and Hank - high school sweethearts who have grown apart over the years, but find their way back to one another. Sandy is a relatable and likable character and I understood all of her motives throughout. I really liked Hank as well and how he combines his career as a Country music star and his family life. Speaking of, I really appreciated that both main characters were in their thirties with established careers and lives! The side characters in this novel were also great and I really loved Sandy’s best friend Honey.
I think fans of rom-coms will definitely enjoy this one! Especially fans of small town romances, because the town in this book is super charming and the author spends a lot of time explaining it. Overall, I really liked this one, and I’m giving it four stars.
I think this is a very sweet second chance romance for anyone looking for a light read. I think this book started off a little abruptly just throwing the reader into a bump in between Hank and Sandy, without any information on either character, but soon after, everything is smooth sailing. I love the "one that got away" premise and while I do think that this story is rather slow moving, I was happy with any ending that was given to these two characters (even though I did feel like things were rushed just a bit at the end) who I rooted for throughout. This romance had a great cast of side characters that really added to the charm of the town, a setting that I adored throughout. We learn a lot about the town, which may at times take away from the romance.
In the end, it was a cute, light read. Thank you to Kerry Winfrey for writing a book that showcases something I love and do not see reflected in books often enough - country music!
3.5 stars
I always enjoy Kerry's books and this was no different. I read it all in one sitting. Super cute!
This was a perfect second-chance romance. Sandy and Hank were the perfect high school couple until Sandy couldn't get into the college of her choice. She stayed in their small town while Hank went on to bigger things. I loved the arc of this story and how it went back and forth between the present and the past. Kerry Winfrey's writing is just so good and this book swept me up in the story of these two characters and their delightful small town!
I pre-ordered a finished copy of JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG back in January. (PUB DATE 08.02) But thanks to @berkleyromance and @netgalley I didn't have to wait to enjoy Sandy Macintosh and Hank Tillman's small town second chance romance.
I’m a big fan of Kerry Winfrey. I've read all her books and this is easily my new FAVORITE! I finished it earlier this week and keep going back to it. Whenever I start one of her books, I know there will be a charming story, witty dialogue and a sweet romance. Her books make me happy- like goofy-grin-on-my-face happy. They make me feel like I do when I put on my favorite comfy pants and press ‘play’ on my favorite rom-com.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW:
- This is both a love letter to the unique characteristics of small town life and the big complicated feelings of first-love.
- Big Doc Hollywood vibes which is one of my favorite comfort movies. Baileyville's Street Fair = Grady's Squash Festival.
- The supporting townspeople characters are quirky and relatable. I have my own local Hotpants Ed called Too Tan Two Liter.
- Full of humor. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion.
- Compulsively readable. I wanted to blow off adult responsibilities and keep reading. In fact- I kept sneaking in a couple of pages on the Kindle app on my phone.
- Closed door romance that is still absolutely swoonworthy.
- If you're looking for a perfect weekend read- add this to your TBR or pre-order now
If you like Kerry Winfrey then you'll definitely like this book! It's not my favorite from her - Very Truly Yours is hard to beat - but it's good!
Thank you for the chance to preview this title! I always love Kerry's books because I can always walk away feeling hopeful. Great character development! We will be hand selling this at our store and including as a selection to our Fall Subscription boxes.
So, I love Kerry Winfrey books. I think they are fun, adorable, low stress and comparable to a nice, delicious cup of hot chocolate. Most of the time you know what you will get in your cup - hot chocolate. In some cups there's an extra dash of some amazing ingredient like hazelnut such as what I found in Waiting for Tom Hanks.
Other times you get a regular nice cup of hot chocolate such as what I found in JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG.
Don't get me wrong, JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG is a typical Kerry book - a fun, cozy romance in a quaint town with loveable characters.
I enjoyed Hank and Sandy, the two high-school sweethearts finding themselves in a second-chance romance. Hank became a popular country music performer touring the country. He even got married and had a child. Meanwhile Sandy is stuck in her town helping out her parents and putting others' needs above her own.
Hank comes back to town and Sandy must figure out where she stands in Hank's life.
I think the premise is good, but the story fell flat for me at times. While I enjoy interactions with others in small town settings, sometimes the romance gets lost in the hijinks of the town. That's what happened, for me, in JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG. There wasn't a lot of room for character growth for the love interests because many chapters were spent on the town.
JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG is certainly worthy of a purchase and read on a weekend when you need to destress. I can't wait to read another one of Kerry's books.
Thank you NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for providing me an e-copy of JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG.
I rate JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG four out of five stars.
I enjoy Kerry Winfrey’s writing and this book had a few funny laugh out loud sections, her characters were wonderful, but overall this was just another generic ho hum Hallmark romance novel I’ve read a hundred times before. Girl and boy in love, they break up for ridiculous reasons, years later get back together.
Sweet story of first love in high school that goes off track during college. It is 15 yrs later. Will they be able to put the past to rest and move forward? Small town festival, High school reunion. Hank has become a famous singer, while Sandy has grown a business in their hometown. Hank has a child. They have a lot to overcome if they want to repair their relationship. I enjoyed the book and would read another about Hank and Sandy, or other characters in town whose story develops. I would give it 4 stars. It includes a reader discussion guide also. I received an advanced reader copy from Netgalley for my honest opinion.
Kerry Winfrey does it again - delivering another sweet, charming and funny romcom read. Great banter, small town, some wonderful female friendships, and romance are all present.
I loved that the small town (Baileyville), had the charm and quirks I love to see in a small town setting. (Definitely gave me some Stars Hollow vibes for fellow Gilmore Girl enthusiasts). Second chance romance isn’t one of my go tos, but I loved that in this case Sandy and Hank were High School sweethearts / “the one that got away” and got another chance.
I was really happy to see our leads were in their thirties and both had gone on to establish themselves and build full lives, and I enjoyed the slow burn anticipation of a reunion. A clear standout for me is the friendship between Honey and Sandy - I love to see positive and supportive female friendships.
Overall, just a wonderful and satisfying read that left me smiling. One that I will definitely reread and can’t wait to get my physical copy for my bookshelf - have you seen that gorgeous cover?
Thank you to Berkeley and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an early copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and freely offered.
This was unfortunately my least favourite Kerry Winfrey. I’ve adored all of her previous books, but this one didn’t click as well as the others.
The story itself was fine enough. A very typical Winfrey-esque type story. I just found that it lacked the character depth and heart that I’ve come to expect by reading her other books.
I've been a fan of Kerry Winfrey's books from the very first book, and somehow they just get better and better. I'm not typically drawn to second-chance romances, but Sandy and Hank's chance to rekindle their high school love fifteen years later was both charmingly magical and gut-punchingly realistic -- in other words, this is a perfectly balanced romance. Fans of Gilmore Girls will appreciate the quirky small town and the A banter!
Sweet, soft, heartwarming stories that embrace you tight, give you so much hope, put a smile on your face are my addiction!
As a devoted romance reader I love second chances, angsty high school sweetheart stories as well! So this book definitely ticks all those boxes with its so much lovable characters.
The story line has resemblances with HeidiMcLaughlin’s “Forever my girl”: the famous country star hero is coming back to his hometown to take his girl back. Only difference is at Forever Girl: MCs’ sharing a child but in this one hero marries with other woman, bringing his son to know his grandparents and his hometown!
I still enjoyed this book so much and I didn’t care about similarities with other books. Because the author’s portraits of characters and their dialogues were so genuine, realistic and entertaining.
I didn’t only like Sandy: our resilient, self torturing, tough, emotional heroine, who couldn’t move on from her first love, I also loved Honey: the best friend a lot. Actually I have to admit, I even loved her more than Hank: our kind hearted hero, great dad, famous country star! Honey is amazing and dreamy friend every woman needs! She’s dependable, loyal, fun, smart, caring!
The other best friend Shelby is also eccentric, straightforward, peculiar.
The other small town characters from Burger, Sean, parents of MCs are also lovable!
I love going back and forth how Hank and Sandy’s love story evolved and how they finally grew up and learned from their past mistakes.
Only thing I didn’t like rushed HEA parts! The book was slow burn but the ending parts seem like too fast and too much things are going on at the same time. The epilogue could be taken place in one year later at least!
And of course I had hesitations about hero’s marriage and having a son from another woman at first. Maybe the other woman’s involvement into this equation made me a little agitated as heroine devotedly lusted for the same man for years.
Because of those reasons I gave four stars! But I have to admit: this is so far best book of the author! She created amazing characters and witty dialogues. The small town theme couldn’t be developed so good! I hope she writes more heartwarming, engaging books like this! I still loved it so much!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this amazing digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
I absolutely love Kerry Winfrey, and have been just so satisfied with every one of her books thus far. And Just Another Love Song was a refreshing romance (how can she write so many good books!?). I love a good high school romance reunion, and Hank and Sandy were such a great couple to follow. Another one that I cannot wait to buy and reread.
I don’t where to begin with this book, because this was very sweet and cute. Not only the writing style was beautiful and engaging, but also the MCs were adorable. It might get predictable at times but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Kerry Winfrey is an instant hand sell and recommendation for me, and this didn’t change that opinion at all. I liked the feel of this book more than her previous two, and it felt like more of a true romance and love.
Sandy and Hank, high school sweethearts, will they get over the past, their broken hearts and their lack of trust?
Such endearing characters that you want to see together. The first part of the novel takes us back and forth between the beginning of the relationship through its early demise then travels to present time. Hard to read through the break up and mistakes as Sandy and Hank become adults but it is nice to have a more in-depth version of the past. Truly enjoyed these characters and their story and the little town where they are from.
