Tried to enjoy this book but it just wasn’t for me. Not sure if it was the writing style but I couldn’t connect with it.

Aiden Marlowe is grieving his wife Holly who collapsed and died immediately when an unsuspected aneurysm burst, leaving him to raise their seven year old twins. As he is going to the funeral, his phone beeps with a notification and when he looks he realizes that he has won the lottery, thirty million dollars.

Feeling that his family needs to start over, Aiden moves them from Baltimore to a small coastal town an hour or so outside of Boston. The house is a mansion but as soon as he walks into it with his children, they all feel the same thing; the house has a haunted feel. Aiden discovers that the last owner disappeared from the house along with his two daughters and his grandson, never to be heard from again. Knowing he will need help with the children and hoping for something better, he arranges for his father to come over from Ireland to help with the kids and live with them.

But the new house isn't the panacea Aidan had hoped for. He starts to receive notes, anonymous ones saying they were watching him. Each note gets more threatening and soon there are demands for money. Aiden goes to the police but there is little they can do. He hires security but it doesn't seem to ever catch those involved. After his daughter is trapped in the basement during a party Aiden throws, he knows he must do something. Can he discover who is targeting his family?

Carter Wilson is known for writing in the thriller genre. Some of his works have been optioned for tv and movies and he has won numerous awards. In this novel, he lays bare the fears each of us have, that someone could target those we love and we will be helpless to stop them. I listened to this book and the narrator did a great job portraying Aiden's grief, fear and resolution to find those threatening his family. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

Playing the same lottery number for years and then all of a sudden you hit the jackpot. Yet it’s on your wife’s funeral. Also, someone starting to threaten you. I mean, that situation alone is building so much suspense. If you like a locked in the room, but you’re being threatened, but all these things are happening to you type of a thriller you’ll love this. Every page the suspense kept building. There was a bit of unbalanced when it came to certain situations. Sometimes things were a little too far out there, and that made it slightly not believable. Which I don’t really like and thrillers , because I like to be as realistic as possible. Overall, good story, not great, not my favorite. Glad I read it though!

This had such a creepy vibe. Definitely reminded me a bit of The Watcher. I think there’s nothing scarier than feeling like your home isn’t safe. The one place you can rely on to be a safe haven. I was so intrigued throughout wondering where this was going. It didn’t go where i expected but i like when that happens. This was definitely suspenseful and kept me turning the pages.

The narrator was great as well and i definitely felt pulled in to the story.

Aidan founds out he wins the lottery the same day he buries his wife. He isn't really in the mindset to deal with winning or facing his wifes death. He decides to take his 2 children and move from there home and town for somewhere new.

Once they move in its clear there is something dark surrounding the house and the town. Soon notes show up with minor threats and these people know about his life/past. Then it turns to them wanting money. Its a puzzle you as the reader have to solve along with Aidan.

I listed to the audio of this book it was a fast listen the narration was solid.

My main problem was with Aidan once we got 80% into the story more is reveled and I wasn't a fan of the 1st revel.

It was a solid listen but not my favorite thriller/mystery

Thank you Net Galley for this Audio Arc in exchange for my honest review.

I can’t believe I forgot to review this one! I have actually already recommended it to my followers in passing, but plan to do a separate video on it as well. I read a lot of these kind of domestic thrillers, and I actually very much enjoyed this one. It stood out from the crowd, drew me in from the beginning, and catch me interested throughout. Definitely a wonderful thriller. Thank you so much for the advanced copy!

This book started off on the right track. A man bury's his wife and finds out he won the lotto on the same day. This book seemed like it would be fresh and new. However, I found the plot to be slow and I wasn't interested because he was such a bad father.

The New Neighbor
By Carter Wilson

Aiden Marlowe lost his wife but on the day of her funeral he found out he won the lottery, 30 million dollars.
Aiden took twin kids and moved to a new town where no one knew them, no one knew he won the lottery, no one knew his secrets and they could start life without the memories.
Never did Aiden think that within the walls of their new house there would be new ghosts & terrifying notes they would end up dealing with.
Who keeps threatening Aiden and how do they know everything about his past?

I enjoyed listening to this story. Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the advanced copy of this story in turn for my honest review.

The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson is a thriller I was hoping to love. It opens up with an intense and dark scene and had me intrigued. Aiden is burying his young wife with twins by his side. While at her graveside, he realizes he has won the lottery. He buys a new house and moves himself and his kids to another city. The mysterious letters then start coming and confuse and puzzle Aiden. What is going on with this widower?

The New Neighbor
by Carter Wilson
Narrated by Gary Bennett

Rated: 4/5 stars

First off, I'll say that Gary Bannett's narration was great. Listening to this book was enjoyable and easy. His voice gave life to the characters and I would happily listen to more stories narrated by him in the future. Now onto the story itself. The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson. I loved the premise of the story, though the ending left a smidge to be desired, as I didn't love how the bad guy came to be and all of that. I don't want to give any spoilers away. The story itself was interesting and I happily listened to the end, wanting to know who was behind all of the things that were going on to Aidan and his family. Poor Aidan and his kids, who find out that they won the lottery literally as Aidan is standing over his wife's gave at her funeral. He wanted a fresh start for his family after suffering such a tragic loss and what he gets is a whole heck of a lot more. Overall, this was an enjoyable listen and while I feel that the ending could have had more leading up to it, I enjoyed the story.

Normally, I’m not a fan of make narrators. I’m not sure why, but it’s difficult to get into a story. BUT, I did enjoy this title when I gave it a chance. Following a guy with such strange luck- it was an interesting storyline.

Aidan lost his wife and won the lottery all in the same day. He decides to escape his old life and he buys a new home in a new city. After his family moves into the new house, strange letters start to arrive. Then the history of the house comes to light.

This is a story in which I could have cared less about Aidan. This very seldom happens to me. But, he just did not click with my psyche, not one little bit. That being said…there was something about this story which kept me listening. And…I am glad I did. The ending is twisted! I saw it coming but I enjoyed the fall out!

The narrator, Gary Bennett, did a very good job. Sometimes children’s voices are not done very well. But, he did a good job with Aidan’s children. That will always be a measuring stick for me. If you get the child’s voice wrong…I will dnf an audiobook in a flash.

Oh dear....this was a hard one to get through. The premise was captivating. A man wins the lottery on the same day his wife passes away and leaves him with twins to raise. He decides to move his fractured family into a new house in a different town and guess what...the house has a dark history. Some might even say it's cursed. Once settled in the new home, he starts receiving anonymous threatening letters that suggest he is being watched and they know secrets about him.

As with many of these haunted house stories, it started off strong with a ton of atmosphere and suspense. I appreciated that it jumped into plot elements almost immediately. Unfortunately, this one fizzled as it went on. The plot stalled multiple times. The mystery was lost in the convoluted plot and it got to a point in which I just couldn't connect. I also had a hard time with the narrator. His performance lacked verve and made the story seem monotonous.

This audiobook just didn't work for me but it might be better read than audio. I received an advanced audio copy from Dreamscape Media and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The twists were not expected at all! I do feel like it was a little dragged out and could have been shortened. But it’s a great book showing a fathers love for his children and how he will protect them. Highly recommend. Especially the audiobook!
