Thank you Netgalley for this audio edition of The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson.

Aidan is deep in grief on the day of his wife's funeral. He is now a single father of two, and his beloved partner is gone. But to add a whole other level of complication to the day, he also learns that he has won the lottery.

Using the money to get a fresh start, Aidan takes his two little and moves into a large house in a much more affluent area. And while plenty of people are friendly to this new family, Aidan is also receiving ominous notes with thinly veiled threats in them. Is there someone in the neighborhood that wants their money? Or do they want them gone?

I did enjoy the creepy atmospheric quality, especially in a spacious mansion of a house in a foreboding neighborhood. I also love lottery stories because they can end up so bizarrely twisted. But overall, I just couldn't get into this one. I can't quite put my finger on why, the pace? The character development? The timeline hops? Either way, my teeth were never all the way sunk.

Thank you to NetGalley for the audio advanced reader copy of this book. This was a great reading of a great book. The reader was easy to understand and did a fabulous job getting across which character was speaking with slight differences in voice and accent. Loved the twists and turns and this book was hard to turn off as the reader constantly wants to know what happens next. I will be looking for more books by Carter Wilson and will definitely look for other books read by this narrator.

So this was one of those books that's a bit hard to figure out how to review because after having finished it, I've been thinking about it for a little while trying to decide what to say and feeling like I don't have that much to say about it.
I was hopeful going into this book, but after listening to the first part, I started to lose interest and focus. I felt like this was missing parts to the story and that it needed something more. The idea/premise was a good one, but it fell a little flat for me.
I did love the audio for this book. It was a very quick and good-quality listen despite the story being a bit of a letdown. I thought the narrator did a great job doing the voices and narrating the story.
This story is about Aidan and he holds the winning Powerball numbers.
So, is today the best day of his life... or the worst?
Aidan Marlowe is superstitious and he's been playing the same lottery numbers for fifteen years, never hitting the jackpot. Until now. On the day of his wife's funeral.
Aidan struggles to cope with these two sudden extremes: instant wealth beyond his imagination, and the loss of the only woman he's ever loved, the mother of his twin children. But the money gives him and his kids options they didn't have before. They can leave everything behind. They can start a new life in a new town. So they do.

But a huge new house and all the money in the world can't replace what they've lost, and it's not long before Aidan realizes he's merely trading old demons for new ones. Because someone is watching him and his family very closely. Someone who knows exactly who they are, where they've come from, and what they're trying to hide. Someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC/advanced audiobook copy and for letting me listen and review this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this one. We follow Aiden Marlowe shortly after his wife passed away unexpectedly, leaving him to take care of their twins on his own. At her funeral, he gets a text notification for the Powerball winnings that he plays every week. He doesn't know why, but he checks the text and he has won the lottery!

We follow him after he decides to move his family from Baltimore to a small town in New Hampshire. Everything is great, or so it seems. Then strange things start happening. He gets mysterious notes and thinks he sees people on his property.

This was so intriguing and I couldn't put this one down. I don't want to say much more without giving away spoilers. I haven't read anything else by this author before, but I'll definitely check out other books and their backlist.

I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

I really wanted to love this book. Psychogical thrillers are a genre I enjoy, but this one missed the mark on a few counts. The premise was an interesting one, but the author seemed to be trying to weave too many different stories together into the one book, which did not all get explained in the course of the novel, It made the story seem a bit disjointed, especially as I listened on my commute. In addition, the narrator, who had a pleasant voice, tended to speak more quickly when using his Irish accent, which meant I needed to rewind and relisten to certain parts, further making the story a bit disjointed.

Aidan Marlowe wins the lottery and buries his wife the same day. He picks up his life and moves himself and his kids to a mansion in the small elite town of Bury. They don’t receive quite the warmest welcome but instead threatening letters. Marlowe starts losing hours of time, and starts questioning everything. With the help of his lawyer, he tries to solve the mystery of the prior occupants of his house and the letters when the police fail to solve it.

Spooky, griping, and fast paced, The New Neighbors is quite the intense thriller. I liked Marlowe, a grieving widower and wonderful father, and wanted him to solve this mystery. The ending was surprisingly twisty, with events I didn’t see coming, and very satisfying!

Aidan Marlowe has been playing the same lottery numbers for 15 years and has never won. Now, on the day of his wife’s funeral, he wins. As he grapples with the guilt of winning during such a sad time, and being a widowed father to two children, he decides to move towns in hopes of starting over. After buying a big house in a fancy neighborhood, he begins receiving threatening messages from someone in the neighborhood that is watching him very closely👀

I will not lie, it was slow to get into for me. About 40% of the book was creating tension, or suspense of what is to come and I was struggling finding a connection with any of the characters till the very end. However it DOES speed up massively once you hit the halfway mark. It is a very gritty, semi gory book at the end but also has good family values??-so kinda a feel good😂🥰, which is why I felt like it should be classified more as a noir (and because of its character building/police procedural vibes) and less of a thriller.

Thank you so much @poisonedpenpress for sending me this copy, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am very thankful to get to work with you all🖤

I’m deep into The Jigsaw Man and thoroughly enjoying how FREAKY this serial killer is. Can’t wait to figure out what’s happening🤓

I was expecting a haunted house story going into this, but what I go was a psychological thriller with a is it/is it not haunted house thrown in and honestly I wasn't upset over it. An unreliable narrator is one of my favourite plots because it keeps me on my toes the whole time and this one did just that. My only complaint was the actual history of the house & town was kept kind of surface level and I would've really enjoyed diving further into it all.

The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson puts the psychological in this thriller that had me guessing and all in from the start. On the day Aidan buries his wife he wins the lottery. He moves with his 7 year old twins to a grand house. Soon it's clear there are secrets in his house. Like the family that disappeared who once lived in it.

Then the threatening letters arrive ending with the words, "We Who Watch." Who is behind the letters? What happened to the previous family?

As the writer creates tense filled moments outstanding narrator Gary Bennett makes us feel the fear, confusion, anger and emotional toll all this is having on Aidan. His realistic performance felt like Aidan called me and said, "Have I got a story for you!"

I received a free copy of this audiobook from Dreamscape Media via #NetGalley for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Well I’m kinda of at a loss for reviewing this one. The premise was good, but the exercise was meh. There were moments of pretty good but my overall feeling when I was finished was just ok. The narrator was good though and I liked how the characters were portrayed. I just needed more “thrill” from this thriller. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 because the audiobook was easy to listen to despite the semi bland story.
Aiden Marlowe gets a message that he was won the lottery, which he has been playing faithfully for years, while he was at the funeral of his wife after she dies from a brain aneurysm. As a result, he decides to take his kids and start somewhere fresh to try and give them a new beginning without their mom. While at the funeral, he hears a big crack like a tree falling and hears the word “bury” which he assumes related to the wife he was burying, but when he got home he searched for the word online and found a house for sale in Bury, so he buys it and they move. The house has a strong history of heartache and so does Aiden. But it also comes with anonymous notes left on his doorstep that tells him he’s been watched and will do whatever it takes to get what they want. Aiden has to figure out who is leaving the letters and how to stop them before it was too late.
Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.

This book started off so strong. I loved the overall tone. Unfortunately the book spiraled, and I don't even know what happened in the end. 😂 it got WEIRD
With that said, I absolutely LOVED the narrator

I actually really love this book it kept me on the edge of my seat and I definitely wanted to know what was happening. Thank you Netgalley for the arc.

In the book The New Neighbor, author Carter Wilson writes about Aidan Marlowe and his difficult time or is it his incredibly fortunate time? He wins the lottery and his wife’s funeral are all on the same day. He decides, with maybe some help from his dead wife, to move into a house. But the past of that house might be after him and his kids.
This was an interesting story line and I was looking forward to listening to it. But there were a lot of holes in the story line. Pacing was good and character development was good but I felt it did not live up to the potential. The audio-book narration was very well done. I would recommend this book. I received a copy of this audio-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The New Neighbor started off well enough. There were a lot of moving parts and I waited anxiously for them to all come together in that satisfying way that a really good book does. Then I just waited for some of them to come together. Then I said to myself, “Is that it?” Here was an idea that wasn’t fleshed out. Paths that were not explored. Characters that were not whole. It could have been so much more.

The New Neighbor begins with Aiden at his wife's funeral. While he has a minute to himself he checks his phone and holy cow he just won the lottery. Grieving and a little lost Aiden moves himself and his twins to Bury, NH.
As they settle in to the new community they learn some interesting history of the house they are living in. And then the notes start arriving.
Just what is happening in this house, town and neighborhood?
What a lot this family has had to deal with! It's a wonder any of them are still coping.

I liked this book once I got into it a ways. It was a bit strange at times, but this added to the story. I listened to the audio version and liked the narrator. I was very intrigued with the story of someone winning the lottery on such an otherwise horrible day. The book didn't play out at all like I had imagined but that's not a bad thing.

Thanks to netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the arc

Mystery-suspense this story took off right out of the gate. A sudden death started a string of events that were puzzling and unique. What is happening to these families? The only thing that was clear to me was that nothing was clear.
I did enjoy it but it got a little to crazy to love it. Will I read another by this author? Absolutely.
I chose to listen to this book on audio and it was narrated by Gary Bennett and he was spot on for this. Did an excellent job.

Thank you to @poisinedpenpress and @dreamscapemedia for the advance review copies of The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson. It's pub day today, so this book is available now!

Aiden Marlow is dealing with enough when his wife dies suddenly, as he is saying his final goodbye to her, his Powerball numbers come up and he doesn't know if its the best or worst day of his life. He takes is winnings, and moves with his twin seven year old a beautiful house in the town of Bury, NH.

The town, and the house have secrets and a dark history that slowly reveal themselves throughout this twisty, atmospheric thriller.

I really enjoyed the many short chapters (80+ chapters!) that varied in length a little bit. It made it easy to get sucked in, and read way more than you expect in one sitting.

I was pulled into all the different plot aspects and did not see the ending coming at all. Dropping my rating a little bit because after reading I'm a little confused about one part of the book.

3.5 stars rounded.

I read "The Dead Husband" right before I listened to this book and glad I did because the mention of some of the characters might have confused me. I felt like this book started off strong, but lost some steam towards the middle and then picked back up at the end. It could've been due to the narration of this audiobook.

I do like how some of the characters from the other book loosely tied into this one, but I'm sure you could read them as a stand-alone book! I appreciated the author's description of how broken Aiden is due to his wife's untimely death which makes him think about his brother's untimely death, which are recurrent themes throughout the book. It was interesting to see how Aiden dwelt with his grief and roller coaster ride he took his 7-year old twins on. I'd recommend this book to those who like psychological and/or domestic thrillers!

Thank you to NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and the author for providing this ARC in return for my honest review!

#TheNewNeighbor:

“It’s been said loss can either define you, break you, or make you stronger. But that’s shite. Because loss…real loss. It doesn’t do any of those things. What it does is festers. Sits inside you like a cancer. Better some days, worse others. But it never goes away, and you still die in the end.”

I mean, the worst day of your life (your wife’s funeral) and you also win the lottery? If there not the luck of the Irish (pub intended) I don’t know what is. I found this psychological thriller to be different as we don’t have the drunk unreliable narrator woman, but, man! There’s so many lines we cannot decide what’s real or what’s in his mind and it makes for a fun and fast read.

The We Who Watch letters were so creepy. They were sinister and really had me thoroughly on edge. It was such a goof take on a thriller. I wouldn’t say it was a slow start, but the 35 percent in, I just kind of listened and didn’t really feel invested. But I wasn’t bored. 35 percent hit and we went full investigation, accusation, hallucination, all the “ions”. But honestly the biggest shock was that 1998 was 24 years ago and not 8. There’s a flashback and it took me a minute to register it. 😂

I did an audio/read combo and loved Gary Bennett reading. The accent came out with perfect timing and really sold the story. I felt I was on autopilot listening to a friend tell a story. Some of the twists you can easily notice early on and you’re just in agonizing pain waiting for Marlowe to catch on. But, that’s the thing about unreliable characters right? There’s more than what we see and what they see as well.

Overall, a quick different take on thrillers with a male MC taking the lead on unpredictability. It flowed well and I really enjoyed it. Thank you so much @posin and @dreamscapenfor the gifted copy. The New Neighbor is out 4/12!

3.25 - 3.35 ⭐

Aidan Marlowe (goes by Marlowe) lost his wife, Holly, and learned he won the lottery at her funeral. Now a single father to 7 year old twins, he decided on a fresh start and moves from a big city ~ Baltimore, Maryland to a small town ~ Bury, New Hampshire. As they're trying to settle in and learn to live without Holly, he starts getting threatening letters that are signed from who we watch . Now he's on a downward spiral, drinking heavily and questioning his own sanity.

Looking back now I'm mad that I didn't know who the who in the who we watch was, but I should have guessed. But then again, I do like not figuring it out ahead of time sometimes.
There was an added little mystery of how his brother, Christopher, died when they were teenagers that was interesting.

My heart was pounding a bit when Maggie went missing for a little while and I liked where she was found.

Gary Bennett did a good job of narrating, however, Aidan is Irish, so I wouldn't have minded listening to an Irish accent.

This one started out really strong for me and I was really excited for it, but I hate to say that somewhere along the way my mind started to wander a bit. Was it because there were apparently references from another book of his that I should have read first ~ maybe? I guess I should have read the blurb first and not judged the book by the cover. And who is Max? I thought the twins names were Maggie and Max, but it seems his name is Bo ~ ugh. I did start hearing the name Bo towards the end. That shows how well I was paying attention.
With that said I will give this author a try again ~ maybe I'll read it, instead of listening to the next one.
