great narrator! I liked how the story unfolded, the mystery of what and why things were happening. It keep my attention good read . Love the twists and turners.

Great straightforward writing, just as a thriller should be. There were so many twists and turns in the plot it was like being on a roller coaster. I couldn't put it down.

🌙𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝐵𝑙𝑢𝑟𝑏: “Aidan holds the winning Powerball numbers.
Is today the best day of his life... or the worst?
Aidan Marlowe is the superstitious type—he's been playing the same lottery numbers for fifteen years, never hitting the jackpot. Until now. On the day of his wife's funeral.
Aidan struggles to cope with these two sudden extremes: instant wealth beyond his imagination, and the loss of the only woman he's ever loved, the mother of his twin children. But the money gives him and his kids options they didn't have before. They can leave everything behind. They can start a new life in a new town. So they do.
But a huge new house and all the money in the world can't replace what they've lost, and it's not long before Aidan realizes he's merely trading old demons for new ones. Because someone is watching him and his family very closely. Someone who knows exactly who they are, where they've come from, and what they're trying to hide. Someone who will stop at nothing to get what they want...”
🌙𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤: This cover and plot draw me in since laid eyes on this book. It was interesting to see a male character playing the mental ill part for a change, why does it always have to be a female? So that earned you some points. To me, the book started with a bang but soon I found myself dragging thru the audio, although interesting plot, not memorable.
🌙𝑁𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛: narrated by Gary Bennett I was not fascinated by this narration, maybe that’s why this book lost some points with me. It was bland, not easy to follow (sometimes it was a struggle to know who was talking) and the voice, to me, hold no emotions, it was very neutral.

This was a twisty psychological thriller that had my head spinning from the number of times I thought I knew what kind of story I was reading, only to have it completely change directions.
The story starts off with 35 year old Aidan Marlowe, an Irish ex-pat, burying his wife who died suddenly of an aneurism, leaving him to raise young twins on his own. To make things extra interesting, on the day of his wife's funeral he finds out the same lottery numbers he's been playing for years won the jackpot, leaving him a new multi-millionaire. Trying to keep his new wealth a secret and protect his family, Aidan buys a big new house and moves to a new town only to get secret menacing notes demanding money.
From there the story gets crazier and crazier as we jump from a history of missing persons associated with the new house he bought, a dark past surrounding the death of Aidan's brother, a secret escape room in the basement of the house and a deep dive into the dark web. Not to mention Aidan's own spiraling mental health as he starts blacking out and drinking more and more.
Read this if you love a twisty psychological thriller in the vein of Lisa Jewell and like stories that will keep you guessing right to the end. I didn't see how this book was going to go at all. While I did enjoy it, I didn't love it. It was a little too dark with hard to like characters. Nothing against the book, just not my type of read. Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my ALC in exchange for an honest review! I probably wouldn't have picked this one up on my own and I did really appreciate the writing talents of the new to me author.

First off, how amazing is this cover?!
This was an entertaining and twisty domestic thriller with such a fun and engaging plot. How ironic is it to win the lottery the day of your wife’s funeral! Could you imagine?! Very intriguing for sure!
The short chapters make it a quick read and are structured perfectly to continually drive the suspense. While I wasn’t utterly blow away by it, it was still a solid and enjoyable read!

The New Neighbor had a great premise and started off strong. Midway, it began to sag a bit for me. But then another twist was thrown into the mix and I was hooked again. I think that the narrator had a tough time with the Irish accent which was distracting for me.

I could push it to 2.5
Started strong, but it fell short of my expectations. The book left unanswered questions. I guess that's where one's imagination is supposed to kick in.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to review the novel. Although I could not find audiobook as a choice on Goodreads, I picked the next best option.

Aidan Marlowe's world is spinning. His wife died, leaving him a single parent to seven year old twins. Then, on the day of the funeral, he finds out he has won the Powerball. Needing a fresh start, he moves his family to New Hampshire. They quickly learn that the family that lived in their new house disappeared without a trace. Then, threatening letters start showing up. And things start happening.
I listened to the audio version. I can't put my finger on it, but something just didn't work for me. The narrator is clear and well paced, but I didn't like it. I think it may have to do with the fact that we have an Irish main character and no Irish accent- not even in dialogue.
I would probably stick to print and skip the audio if I could do it over again. I think I would have enjoyed it more.
I did not realize until coming to Goodreads to review this that there is a book about the family who lived in the house before the Marlowe's. I plan on reading it. I think that is another point of dissatisfaction with this book- the whole former family disappeared plot was never resolved. Hopefully I will find closure by reading [book:The Dead Husband|54717135].
I received an audio copy in exchange for an honest review.

Widower Aiden Marlowe won the lottery on the day of his beloved wife’s funeral, leaving him widowed with 7-year-old twins. A stroke of luck on the worst possible day of his life? Or is it? There’s truth to the saying ‘Money can’t buy happiness’ and Mr. Wilson will show us just how true this is.
Marlowe is susceptible to energies and he is feeling spiritually pressed to move to Bury, NH – if you’ve read The Dead Husband, you’ll recognize this fictional town from The Dead Husband. Marlowe purchases a mansion there but straight off things get weird. Someone is threatening Marlowe, leaving letters that demand money or else serious harm will befall his children.
The speculation jumps between an unknown threat and an unreliable narrator. Are the threats and increasing levels of violence coming from the wrecked mind of a grieving father who’s becoming increasing paranoid, drinking too much and has gaps in his memory or from a series of suspect secondary characters, each greedy for Wilson’s newly won money? In addition to the dodgy secondary characters is a mansion with a dark history of missing people, making this mystery anyone’s game.
The tension in this book is thick and the pace is rapid but what really hooked me was the eerie atmosphere and how Marlowe experiences. It has a bit of a surreal quality at times and it carries over into Marlowe’s self-reflection of his childhood and a dark secret that he’s kept hidden his whole life.
Narration: Gary Bennett does an exceptional job narrating, his voice is emotive and pleasing, moving the story along with perfect pace!
My thanks to Dreamscape Media for this gifted ALC and to @PoisonedPenPress for this gifted copy and to @CarterWilsonAuthor for writing this!

I liked it. The New Neighbor has some really twisty parts that continued making me guess where the book was going next. I was always wrong so the author definitely did a good job making me want more. The main character was frustrating to me though. Overall, it was a good twisty thriller.

Interesting plot about a man who loses his wife to a brain clot and wins the lottery on the day of her funeral. The idea was intriguing but there were many loose ends and the main character seemed to be quite obsessed with himself, Listening to the book became quite painful at times. The narrator also did a poor job of an Irish accent.

The New Neighbor managed to tie together the gothic and thriller genres quite nicely, in a gently paced way. Although not as fast paced as a traditional thriller, it was appropriately paced for the storyline. The characters were likable and relatable, tender and fierce, the story was realistic, and the narration was well done. #TheNewNeighbor #NetGalley #JennReviews

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Lots of unexpected twists and turns added to the suspense and it all worked incrediblywell. I will be looking for more from Carter Wilson!
Thank you to NetGalley, the Publisher and Author for allowing me an audio of this book for my honest review.

Not too sure what to think of this book. It stared out slow then got a little better. I was a fast read for me and I love that the chapters where short with cliffhangers. It was a little boring and slow in some places but overall a good read. This was my first Carter Wilson book and I have since seen praise about several of his title. Over all this was a 4 star read. Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC.

Thank you to NetGalley, Poisoned Pen Press, and Carter Wilson for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review! This was a captivating read that follows a widower (who is also a lottery winner) and his twins as they move to a Barry. While in Barry, the family starts receiving letters from "those who watch". The twists in this story were unpredictable & big and that's all a thriller fan can ask for! This one comes on April 12th!!

The New Neighbor

Aiden Marlowe was from Ireland where he was a bartender in his father’s bar. He lives with the guilt of his brother Christopher’s death. Thirty-five-year-old Aidan Marlowe stood in the cemetery grieving the death of his wife, Holly, due to a brain aneurysm when he received a text; he won the Power Ball Lottery. He had played the same numbers for at least fifteen years. Just as he read the text, he hears a crack was it a tree limb or his soul. Thirty million dollars will never bring back the love of his life, but they will offer opportunities that were not there before. He decided the time is right to start all over, to leave Baltimore. He purchased a new home at 1743 Rum Hill Road in Bury, New Hampshire and moved Bo and Maggie, his seven-year-old twins. The Yates House is an eight thousand square feet mansion in a wealthy neighborhood, and it comes with a mysterious past; people that lived there previously have vanished. Aiden feels an energy in the house. He discovers a hidden safe room in his basement with a big safe. He begins having repeated gaps in his memory. Someone is watching Aiden and his family; that someone is leaving threatening messages signed “We Who Watch.” Aiden turns to the town’s sheriff to no avail. The Sheriff doesn’t seem interested or competent. He holds a dinner party and invites his neighbors hoping to discover what happened to the previous owners. His attorney from Baltimore and his dad from Ireland come to help him in his search for the persons threatening his family.
This is a fascinating psychological thriller. The action/threats are non-stop. You, the reader knows something wicked is taking place you just aren’t sure what. Who is watching Aiden and family? What happened to Christopher? Who is sending threatening letters to the Marlowe family and why? Kudos to author Carter Wilson!

This was my first audiobook and I flew through it- It did take some adjustment to one person narrating for multiple characters by changing their voice, but once I got used to which "voice" belonged to who it made it much easier.
The New Neighbor had a plot packed full of info and backstory about the characters (mainly Marlowe) and I did like the secrets he revealed along the way.
Did I like him? Not really..but I kept reminding myself of the situation he was in, having just lost his wife and moving his kids to a new state. I tried to have sympathy for him, but the more I listened the more that sympathy went out the window (I swear I’m not heartless!)
After winning the lottery he hired a lawyer and their relationship was odd to me. I guess it did show that he was kind of on his own in life since he was depending so much on a person he just met.
The pace of the story was a bit off and the transitions from chapter to chapter were a little abrupt. I wished there was better flow between segments, but the short chapters did keep the story moving.
Overall the plot was interesting and the story had some nice twists & turns but the ending wrapped up in a whirl and left me with some unanswered questions, falling flat (I know for some people being left with questions is not necessarily a bad thing!)…and as usual, I did not guess the ending right.

Just kept reading and reading. I carried this book with me all day. I made frozen pizza for supper, I just could not put it down. I had to keep reading bro find out what happened next. A truly, suspenseful novel Am going to be reading more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this fantastic book!

I am so glad I was able to read this book! It was a good read, and it kept my interest. Grief can sometimes break a person, but there is often hope that can bring about a positive change. The main character went through a lot of unbelievably sad times, and he blamed himself for some of them. Winning the lottery means nothing if you feel like you don't deserve it, and because of that, you self-destruct. The story had suspense and a twist of sorts. I would recommend it to others. #Netgallery

Aiden’s wife just died, but, then again, he just won the lottery.
After uprooting himself and his 2 small children to Bury, NH, and buying a mansion, Aiden starts realizing that there may be more to this house than he originally expected. The previous owners disappeared without a trace and strange things start happening to Aiden’s family too.
This book is super creepy. I spent the whole time I listened to it on edge and wondering what in the world was going on.
I won’t say anything about the ending other than I didn’t think it was as strong as the rest of the book.
I’d definitely read his other book, too, because I enjoyed the slow burn creepiness.
