The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson pulled me in from the book blurb. How tragic to bury one's spouse on the same day as euphoric news of life changing winnings. The book has secrets, spookiness, and mystery. Are there ghostly or delusional visions? The vivid descriptions of the creepy mansion in New Hampshire had me envisioning so many details. I had not read or listened to the previous book, The Dead Husband, which featured this mansion and questions of vanished people. The author definitely wrote some unexpected twists and left some questions unanswered. The narration by Gary Bennett was great. I loved how he injected the Irish lilt in his voice when performing certain characters. Thank you #NetGalley and #Dreamscape Media for allowing me to listen to this pre-release audiobook. I enjoyed it.

The story starts out with so much promise. His wife's death, finally winning the lottery after playing the same numbers for years, moved away with his twins & guess what the house they move into is full of mystery and secrets. That's where all my interest ends though, for some reason it just didn't hold my attention, the suspense just wasn't there for me.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This started off good but I did not like it at all. Parts were too twisted for me. Someone else may really like this, it just was not for me.

After Marlowe loses his wife to a brain aneurysm, he wins the lottery and sets off to create a new life with his 7 year old twins. The house they buy comes with some dark secrets and Marlowe begins to receive threatening letters. I really tried to like the characters in this book but they fell short. One problem was the narrator of this audio book. Marlowe was from Ireland and the narrator did not do a good job. It was like a half accent or something. I found it distracting. Maybe the paper version of this book would be a better choice. The story. Was overall okay if you like a decent who done it story.
*** huge thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review

So I enjoyed this audio. The narrator was good and did a great jobs. The storyline was different and unique. Not exactly what I had expected. But good none the less. I liked the back story for Aiden, it gave us some extra input on the troubles he has been through in his life. I definitely didn’t see the end coming, but that’s a good thing as well. I liked to be surprised when I’m reading these types of books. Overall I would give it a 3.5-4.
***thank you Netgalley for the ARC copy in return for an honest review***

3.5-3.75 stars
I actually enjoyed this one more than I was expecting. It was interesting, a little creepy, a bit twisty at times, and the ending was decent (although some parts felt a touch implausible). I didn’t love the way some of the characters were crafted, but that’s fine; I still tore through the book quickly enough, clearly! I don’t think I’ve read anything from this writer before, but I’ll have to check out some of his other work.

I loved the plot of this book and I loved how good the narrator was. Generally, I seem to stick to more of a woman’s point of view, but I really enjoyed the accent and emotion this narrator brought. Because of how good he was, it took this thriller to deeper emotional heights! I loved the story and loved the ending too.

Aidan Marlowe plays the same lotto numbers every week and has been doing so for 15 years. Today he hits the jackpot, or does he? It’s the day of his beloved wife’s funeral after her sudden, unexpected death. Utterly broken, Aidan pulls up stakes, buys a mansion in Bury, NH sight unseen (because it speaks to him) and moves with his seven year old twins, Bo and Mags. Soon Aidan is losing time, drinking far too much and receiving threatening letters. Learning that the mansion has a history, Aidan is certain that if he can solve that mystery, he will be able to solve his own. Aidan is not only bogged down with the recent death of his wife, but he also carries guilt for the death of his brother. When the danger escalates , Aidan asks his Da to come from Ireland to help out, Aidan comes clean about parts of his past, but he’s still holding back. When more letters arrive threatening the whole family, Aidan digs deeper hoping to find the answers needed before it’s too late, but is Aidan even a reliable narrator? This book was a twisty good listen with a unique plot that kept this listener engrossed from start to finish.

3.5!! Thanks for this audiobook Netgalley. Very suspenseful- loved the ending. Didn’t feel like it got in-depth enough with any of the characters. Thanks again !

The New Neighbor by Carter Wilson
This book is about extremes in essence between death and wealth both of these scenarios can change someone at the deepest part of there core being. Death in most cases brings grief and grief spills sometimes into other kinds of mental health problems. Wealth especially new found wealth like winning a lottery brings stressors as well because your life changes. In this story Carter Wilson spins a tale of a grieving father Aidan who is at his wife's funeral who dies of a brain aneurysm. While at the funeral Aidan cell phone dings and he finds out that he won the lottery and will receive a 30 million dollar jackpot. Aidan is left taking care of his twin kids Bo and Maggie who are 7 years old. Aidan decides to move his family to Bury, New Hampshire and moves into a mansion that has it own history.
The story delves deep into Aidan past history with his brother dying in Ireland, his wife dying, and the mystery if what happened to the former residents of the house he purchased. I felt the story was not just a thriller but a mixture of Horror with mystery. Aidan spins out of control and you feel for him because you know he is grieving for his wife.
I really enjoyed the mixture of the story it was engaging and it keep me wanting more and to get to the end. Their are some twists to the story ones that I was not expecting. This is a psychological horror thriller and it does not disappoint. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good psychological thriller in this case it is a grieving father who is not sure of himself because he is losing his memory and drinking a lot of alcohol.
Grief and money changes everything the lose of someone special and the gaining of new money can impact and change someone on all levels.
The narrator was great. This was a 5 star read and I cannot wait to read more from this author and this was the first time I ever read from this author.
I want to thank Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for a free copy of the book for an honest review.

Ah man, what a bummer. I love the setting and the plot is perfect for me, but I just fell flat. The beginning was interesting, but it really dragged down later on. I'm not sure if it was because I couldn't get into the characters or if the storyline was too slow.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

Enjoyment: 3.5
Total rating: 4.5
I honestly did not see this story coming.
The New Neighbour is not only a compelling psychological thriller, but it also delivers an intense and authentic depiction of guilt and grief.
We follow Marlowe in the aftermath of the worst and best day of his life. Now a single father who finds out he won the lottery the day he buried his wife. He is a very relatable yet flawed and somewhat unreliable narrator. The story was well-plotted, and I actually enjoyed the third act and the direction Carter chose to go.
The audiobook is phenomenal; Gary Bennett brought Marlowe to life with his pacing and artistic choices. I found his narration easy to follow and cohesive with the story in tone and pace.
Disclaimer: In exchange for an honest review, I am thankful to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of New Neighbour.

What are the odds of winning the powerball?
Aidan discovers that he is the winner of the Powerball and just won over $30 million
You'd probably guess that Aidan is a pretty lucky guy and that he is living the best day of his life... but you'd be wrong!
Aidan Marlowe is the superstitious type from Ireland has been playing the same lottery numbers for the past fifteen years and his numbers were finally picked for the jackpot... on the same day of his wife's funeral.wife's funeral. His wife died very suddenly of a brain aneurysm leaving him to raise their twin seven year Bo and Maggie alone.
Aidan struggles to cope with these two sudden extremes: Instant wealth and the loss of the love of his life and mother of their beloved children.
Aidan decides that his wife is sending him a sign an that she wants him to move and start over in a new state.
However a huge house and a new neighborhood can't solve all of your problems. Aidan quickly learns that someone is watching him and his family after notes have been left outside of his door signed we who watch. This person also happens to know everything about Aidan and his family

This one was full of twists and questions. Aidan Marlowe experiences the worst and the best in the same day. First the worst, he has to bury the love of his life, his wife, and while at the funeral he receives a text telling him he won the lottery. Now a multi-millionaire he moves, along with his two children, to another state, to a town named Berry, to a mansion with its own sinister past. Its occupants disappeared. Soon after arriving, he starts receiving letters warning of being watched. Who is watching? Are the neighbors plotting to get them? Is Marlowe just crazy? This was a thrill ride or contradictions and makes you wonder if winning the lottery and having all that money is really worth it or living simply is where it is at.

The New Neighbor is the new book from Carter Wilson.
"Aidan Marlowe has been playing the same lottery numbers for years. On the day that he buries his wife he learns that he has won the Powerball jackpot. He moves to Bury, NH with his young twins hoping to start over. The house he moves to has a history - the previous family disappeared and has never been found. Notes appear on the front door claiming to know his secret and wanting money. Marlowe wonders if he can keep his family safe."
Do you like stories where a character seems like they're descending into madness? You might like this book. I really enjoyed Mister Tender's Girl. It had a high level of "creepy"' This book has some similar elements but never quite gets there. And there's a plot device that I do not care for. No spoilers but every time I see it, it feels like an author is just taking a shortcut.
The ending is pretty wild and unexpected. The whole explosive scene is in an unusual location. Nice wrapup from Wilson. Great audiobook performance from Gary Bennett

The story was interesting and I really enjoyed the narrator. It felt well-paced, and moved quickly at times. However, it was a bit predictable. All and all it was still a really entering book.

This is a 3.5 star for me. It’s a fantastic concept - you experience your worst day in your life… and the best day all at the same time. As you struggle to figure out what to do next your world continues to hit obstacle after obstacle. Until you are left to wonder, what is real and what isn’t. The execution of the storyline was difficult to follow at times - but the overall concept is great. Thanks to NetGalley for the read.

This story sounded so unique and I was not disappointed. Can you imagine the dichotomy of sorrow and elation experienced by the main character as he both buries his spouse and wins the lottery on the same day? Then the mystery that surrounds his new home and life turns him inside out. The suspense held me and the last 4-5 chapters was both surprising and endearing.
Gary Bennett was a fantastic narrator for both male and female characters. It’s rare to do both so well. I loved his gentle style and found myself just enjoying his voice.
Thankyou to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC.

Thank you for this book in exchange for my honest review.
To be truthful, I couldn’t hook into this story plot. There was nothing new for me in the book The New Neighbor.

I do so enjoy a neighborhood thriller! This one didn’t disappoint, although it does come off a bit wordy and over complicated in parts. The narration was really well done. My first Carter Wilson book and I’m so looking forward to checking out more of his work.
