This is the exact Titanic book that I have been looking for, a day-by-day account of events, birthdays, and deaths. It doesn't have to be just for a Titanic nerd, anyone interested in general Titanic trivia, teachers, and even topics of conversation could use something from this book.
While I love the whole setup and content of the pages, I am also thrilled that the author has a Titanic heritage. I think that adds to the charm.
Titanic Day by Day is not a book to be read in a few sittings. It is as much a reference book about the great liner, her passengers, and crew, as anything else, given all of the exhaustively researched details it contains.
The author is the great grandson of Robert Hichens, one of Titanic's quartermasters who was at the helm of the great ship when she struck the iceberg. Hichens would survive the sinking by manning one of the lifeboats and I think this book is a wonderful tribute to not only him from his grandson, but a greater tribute to EVERYONE who lived and died that night.
This book is incredibly unique in that we are given a look at every single person who set foot on the ship during her maiden voyage. Starting on January first, the author lists events on that day related to every passenger and crew member - those who were born that day, and those who survived the sinking but died on that particular day later on. The author also includes news articles from the day, quotes from survivors, and an assortment of facts about the Ship of Dreams. As a result, we get quite a bit of information on both the American and British inquiries in the days following Carpathia's arrival in New York with the exhausted and traumatized survivors.
I truly appreciated that the author sought out information on everyone. So often we only hear about the first class passengers who lived and died, because that is the information most readily available. But second- and third-class passengers were no less important and deserve to have their stories told as well.
This book is nothing short of a labor of love and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning a bit more about those who lived and died that awful night.
Fascinating. Terribly sad, of course, but fascinating.
This is the first book I have ever read about The Titanic and I enjoyed it very much. I thought it was very well researched. This book details every day of the year, with one page for each day.
Each page lists the passengers born on that day, if they were crew or paying passengers, how much they paid for their ticket and if they were saved or unfortunately perished.
It also lists passengers who survived and later died on that day of the year.
Following that there are quotes from survivors who witnessed what happened that night. Usually you get a quote from someone listed on that page (but not always) which I found simply fascinating, to get a glimpse of their story.
And finally a quick Titanic fact at the bottom of each page.
I do wish there were some photographs to break up the days a bit, and I do also wish for some more information about each of the survivors and victims. But I understand you can only fit so much in one book!
I honestly didn't want to put it down.
It is obvious that this is a very well researched book. However, I found the content very choppy and unfortunately will go down on one of my DNF piles.
I personally feel the book should be listed into different sections. To start each date off with the births and deaths of the people aboard Titanic could have been listed in one complete sections. Then two further sections on facts and another quotes.
I'm sure Titanic historians will love this book but it certainly wasn't for me. From the description of the book I was expecting something completely different. Sorry
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to see an ARC
I'm afraid that the format of 'Titanic: Day by Day', cataloguing the various linked people, places and events of the history of Titanic by date rather than subject or chronology, was not for me - I felt it meant that it was hard to read get into, and left the subject matter feeling very dry. I also found myself trying to flick back to find linked facts that I couldn't as I'd forgotten the day it was on.
It's obviously very well researched and meticulously put together but I'm sorry, I didn't enjoy this one.
Very well researched and written, a must read for those in love with the romanticism and tragedy of Titanic.
Really good book with some really helpful facts for every day. Perfect for any titanic fan or avid explorer!
This was a wish for me and I am so happy I was granted this book.
I have had a decade + fascination with the Titanic and I really thought there was nothing left for me to learn, but the set up of this book - which features "people who were born on this day" and "people who died" is actually a great add to a book that, amazingly, manages to supply us with little known events/facts about the Titanic.
This book is obviously WELL researched and the author has a way of writing that made me want to read further. Intrigued and fascinated at the same time, a great book for any fan of the Titanic.
A fascinating insight into the people who sailed on the Titanic. The book is written by date, with lists of everyone on the ship who was born on that date, who died on that date (if they survived the sinking), along with facts about Titanic, and snippets of information from the investigation after or from survivor memories. A great book to dip in and out of.
I’m always fascinated by the Titanic and can never not read any new book that comes out abt it no matter how much I’ve read. This was so unique in how it recounts what went on and I really enjoyed the different quotes and new information.
This is a well written and incredibly well researched non fiction read that goes into day by day what happened during the journey of the Titanic and after. The information within the book was so compelling and made for a fascinating read. I couldn't put it down.
A book of Titanic facts, done in 'This Day In History' style, rather than a narrative history book.
This day-by-day book goes through January 1 – December 31, and for each day list who from Titanic was born and died on that day, as well as each day listing a fact about Titanic and a quote from someone on Titanic.
A good book to pick up and put down and randomly read any given day.

This is an interesting book. Especially the first hand descriptions by the surviving passengers and others.
The book contains a bibliography and an appendix for those who would like to further explore the subject.
The author, a direct descendent of Robert Hitchens (who was at the helm when the Titanic collided with the infernal iceberg), pens this book to honor his great-grandfather. He lists everyone who was born and those who died on any given date throughout the 366 days of 1912. He also includes first-person stories and interesting facts about the Titanic.
This is a good book and will be a good addition to readers of On a Sea of Glass, or those who have an interest in the great ship.
I want to thank NetGalley and Pen & Sword/Pen & Sword History for forwarding to me a copy of this nice book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed here are solely my own.
I have read just about every book written about Titanic and her crew and passengers. I have not, however, ever read a book that gave this much information about the passengers and crew. Mr. Medhurst has painstakingly given birthdays and dates of death for each of Titanic’s passengers and crew whether they have died aboard the ship or years later. Also included are quotes and stories from passengers and crew along with newspaper reports. This is one of the finest books detailing the Titanic disaster that I have ever read. Thank you so much for allowing me to read this amazing book.
