A Peaky Blinders cookbook?! Are you itching to see the next season of Peaky Blinders but it isn’t out where you live yet? Maybe this cookbook can tide you over!
The photography is wonderful, the meals are top notch and expertly planned. Each chapter is named for a place in the show, with foods that you might find in that location. From the Blue Cheese Filo Tartlets to the Butter & Sage Roast Chicken, you’ll find recipes that you may not be looking for, but once you’ll see it, you’ll want to try it.
This cookbook is definitely worth the try. I gave 4 stars since some of the ingredients might be difficult to find, depending on where you live.
Nicely presented book. I liked the mix of photography between the recipes and scenes from the series.
Several very tasty looking family-type meals which I certainly will be trying.
It’s a pleasant surprise to find a recipe book that doesn’t include some more obscure ingredients that I could never hope to buy in the area of the country I live in. Whilst London has a vast array of food suppliers, here in the north-east of England it’s not the case and I sometimes struggle to obtain what is probably considered a fairly basic product included in a recipe. All these recipes should be possible.
The Official Peaky Blinders Cookbook pays homage to the eccentricities of dining during the interwar years, honing in on British fare of the 1920's as imagined by the drama series, Peaky Blinders. The recipes are inspired by what might have been served to the show's protagonist, Tommy Shelby, during each stage of his social climb from Watery Lane to the Arrow House. The recipes have been somewhat modernized for today's taste buds and cooking techniques, but remain grounded in the past.
As an example recipe, let's look at Roast Rabbit with Bacon and Mushrooms in a Whiskey Sauce. This one gleefully breaks plenty of healthy-eating rules, but rules are made to be broken and no one knows that better than the Peaky Blinders. Really, though, they are mostly just minor infractions. 3-1/2 tablespoons of Irish whiskey are added early enough to cook off the alcohol while retaining the flavor. Chicken can be substituted for rabbit, because after all, as the cookbook advises, "Known in the 1920s as poor-man's chicken, rabbit was available to anyone who could hunt it down. And if you want to take Polly's advice, remember that 'Bucks taste better.'"
That roast rabbit/chicken recipe calls for seventeen ingredients as well as two vegetables as a side-serve. But don't panic! The instructions are well focused and clearly written, and will lead you easily through the preparation process. If you have your ingredients and equipment ready and waiting, and follow the instructions to the letter, even a novice cook should end up with an impressive meal. Flip ahead to Creamy Baked Rice Pudding with Berry Compote and you'll have a excellent dessert to finish this feast.
Not every recipe is as easygoing as the Roast Rabbit, though. Adventurous foodies might want to try Pork Scratching Sticks with Smoked Paprika and Sea Salt. All you need are some seasonings and salts... along with a one pound slab of pork skin, a blowtorch and scissors. What could possibly go wrong? Try asking your butcher to sell you the pork skin—by order of the Peaky Blinders.
The photography is such a treat. There's plenty of shots of the show's cast in iconic settings that will please the most avid of fans.
But oh, the food. Those photos begin with Chapter 1 at family table in Watery Lane. For this setting, the lighting is warm, with a golden, homespun glow.
In Chapter 2 we head for The Garrison for some pub food. The dishes now seems darker and moody, with food served on sturdy, rustic plates and boards.
Chapter 3 finds us having lunch at The Derby, with well-lit, bright, colorful food, such as Angels on Horseback, served on fine china.
Chapter 4 takes us to dinner at the Eden Club. The golden glow of chapter 1 is back, but now illuminates elegant yet decidedly masculine place settings.
And for the grand finale in chapter 5, we are invited to a feast at Arrow House. We are given a printed formal menu to stir our appetite. The canapes look fun to make and sound delicious. I'm not entirely convinced about the Pea & Lettuce Soup with Feta, but I'd be willing to give it a try. In a Peaky Blinders dinner party situation, one must be willing to take these things in stride. Most likely there are people watching that you don't want to upset. The Chicken & Pork Terrine with Brandy & Apricots, we are assured, "looks far harder to achieve than it is. Definitely one to impress the guests". To my middle-class sensibilities, unfortunately, terrine looks like Spam and Sushi had a baby. I suppose I should try it before passing judgement—and before judgement is passed on me.
I recommend The Official Peaky Blinders Cookbook to fans of the series, adventurous cooks, curious kitchen novices, photography buffs, and cookbook collectors.

I loved this cookbook and how it relates to a series I really enjoyed as well. It has a bit of everything. Recipes, great photos and a them for the times. I love that it takes you back in time and the recipes really reflect that.
There are recipes that I will try and some that I just like to read about and imagine how they fit into that era. It makes food and cooking so much more interesting (and I already find food and cooking interesting!).
A great cookbook, great photography, great fun and a great era!
What a wonderful recipe book. I love the TV series as well as cooking and baking so this was a great treat.
The Official Peaky Blinders Cookbook by Rob Morris is full of delicious recipes that compliment the Peaky Blinders lifestyle and era. The recipes look amazing and all in chapters to match a different Peaky Blinder event. The book has a very rustic style to it and the photos of the characters compliment the recipes very well.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC. I love this show so i wanted to check out the cookbook. It was beautifully illustrated but most of the food i had never heard of. It will not stop me from trying to make it! Thank you.
Buy this cookbook, by order of the Peaky Blinders! This cookbook stays true to the heart of the series and history of the era. Not only does it provide perspective on how the Shelby’s would be eating at the time and where certain foods were appropriate, but includes clever references to the Shelby’s story. Not to mention the book includes gorgeous stills of the show.
Due to its authenticity to British-cuisine and pastime, if your American like me, some of the ingredients may be a bit hard to find or uncommon.
This cookbook is sure to delight fans of the Peaky Blinder show. It is filled with delicious recipes and gorgeous food photography. It is interesting to see the different dishes the characters enjoy in the show.
A beautiful cookbook- although some of the recipes were fairly complicated I adored the styling of this book, the photography is superb. A must for fans of the show
I love Peaky Blinders and I love cook books so what’s not to like?!
This is a fabulous book, filled with lots of beautiful pictures from the series and a selection of recipes, at least some of which I don’t have in any of my other cook books.
So I would say that if you like Peaky Blinders then you should get this book, or if you like cooking then you should get this book.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this book in return for an honest review.
I loved this book. As a Peaky Blinders fan, this is so fun and brings me right into the show. The book includes pictures from the TV show but also has pictures of all recipes (not all cookbooks do this). Each recipe has a short paragraph explaining why it was chosen and how it brings you into the world. I am going to have to get a physical copy of this!
I enjoyed reading this cookbook. I am one of those weird people who loves reading cookbooks. I can't wait to try some of these recipes. Fans of the Show Peaky Blinders will enjoy cooking the foods they saw on the show.
This book is great, loved all the recipes and I like the fact it has the characters photo’s in too.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I absolutely adored the Peaky Blinders cocktail book that came out a couple of years ago but unfortunately this book just didn't work for me.
The photography of the series within the book is absolutely stunning, and the photography of the recipes looks amazing too.
However, the recipes seem very complicated, and feel so very loosely connected to the series - it just doesn't link well. The recipes just feel so random, and nothing stands out to me that I would like to make.
I urge everyone to buy the cocktail book - this one just fell flat for me.
Wow a very complimentary book to add to viewing parties for Peaky Blinders. (If you have not seen the series you should!) Very creative and authentic recipes, not commonly seen stateside that I am aware of in cookery. The photos of the recipes compliment the scenes of the show. I will definitely be trying some of these recipes. Enjoyed seeing the alcohol infused recipes and includes seafood, lamb and desserts as well as cocktails. I will enjoy giving these recipes a whirl. Nicely done.
Thank you to netgalley for allowing me to be a member and to give helpful feedback. Thank you to the publisher and author for accepting me to read this book, It is greatly appreciated.
This is a beautiful cookbook with lots of variety and meals that would suit the series. I will defiantly try making some of these meals, I loved the way alcohol was incorporated into the meals and the images was beautiful. I loved the formatting of this book and my mother who is a massive fan of the show is excited for me to make some of these recipes.
This title will be enjoyed by Peaky Blinders fans, those interested in food history and those who enjoy cooking.
Peaky Blinders (watch the series to find out what the title means) has enjoyed six successful TV seasons. Now there is this cookbook to enjoy. It is divided into places that feature in the show including Watery Lane, the Bar of the Garrison, The Derby, The Eden Club and the Arrow House. These chapters follow the increasing fortunes of the main character. Each recipe includes a short introduction that places it within the context of the show and/or history.
Some of the recipes include Warming Vegetable and Barley Soup with Alfie Solomons’ Soda Bread; one that I would like to eat is the Steak and Ale Pie with Mash, talk about comfort food. Just a couple more… the English Summer Salad looks gorgeous or how about Old Fashioned Fish Pie or Gentleman’s Pudding with Raspberry Sauce and Custard?
There are many photos in here. Some are of the food while others feature scenes or characters from the show. The food photos are most enticing! All in all, I enjoyed this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
This title will be published on 19 April 2022
Not only is this a cookbook, but you also get to see some stills from the series featuring Tommy Shelby, alongside some quality commissioned photographs.
Some recipes are named after the stars of the hit series, and some themed around different parts of the show.
Simplistic meals and puddings using the food items that were readily available in the 1920's.
The recipe that caught my eye that I'd love to try are the celeriac steaks.
A stunning piece of memorabilia for anyone who's a budding foodie, or simply a lover of the hit TV series.
Many thanks to Netgalley for my ARC.
