When Ellery is a little girl, she finds an old bicycyle that magically comes to life and they embark on some wonderful adventures together. The bicycle is such a comfort for Ellery and stays her constant companion into her teens. As an adult, she forgets about the bike who is waiting to be used in the shed, but will Ellery give her beloved bike away?
A sweet story about how something we love as a child can stay a comfort and joy into adulthood. Other than the stone throwing and mud slinging, which I didn't think added anything to the book, I enjoyed their adventure.
Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy.
About a friendship, love, loss and magic
"Ellery's Magic Bicycle" is a lovely adventure tale. Ellery experienced many great adventures with her bicycle. They celebrate friendship together but also mourn losses together. With Ellery, the wheel also grows. Ellery becomes an adult. Then she gradually forgets about her bike. Until she stops using it. Will Ellery remember the wheel in time before it loses its magic?
Beautiful, colourful illustrations are included in the book. These always create, e.g., different seasons and natural scenes, in addition to Ellery's growing up. The story is beautifully told. She has a strong bond with her bike, with which she has many adventures. Aside from that, it's about true friendship, loss, and love. And then there's the magic.
It's a lovely and magical short story.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book. It was a simple story of a girl growing up and having an unusual best friend. It was very sweet and super easy to read. Loved the progression of the story as well.
The pictures that went with the book were great and I really liked the soft colors.
Overall, I would read more by this author.
Ellery's Magic Bicycle is an adorable story about how you can learn to love in the most unexpected of places. No matter if its finding love and comfort from your family, a friend, or something as simple as a bike, there are always options!
Young Ellory comes across a magical bicycle, one that teaches her to ride and protects her from mean children- all she has to do is ask. Through all their adventures together, they develop a special bond but it's difficult to maintain that as she grows older. So what will happen when Ellery no longer remembers her magical bike?
This is a truly whimsical story of a fun and adventurous little girl that, through its simplicity, cannot help but be endearing. The large and full-page illustrations throughout are bright and clear, especially with the facial expressions. The text is easy-to-read and well-spaced.
It would be ideal as a class read-aloud text or to prompt a unit of work.
The topic and writing style make this ideal for reading to four to seven-year-olds. From the vocabulary used and how much of it is phonetically decodable, a child would be about seven years old to read this independently or with minimal support.
Loved this short picture book about a girl and her bicycle and the adventures she had. Such a sweet read.
I was drawn to this book based on the title of the story and the beautiful cover illustration. It is a simple story about a young girl who finds a magical bicycle. The bicycle becomes her friend and it stays with her through the good and bad as she grows up. I enjoyed the simplicity of the story yet wish there was more of a transition between Ellery getting older and then suddenly being married with a child. Maybe the bike could move with her to her new house and then be happy to have them all together again, before the page where the baby arrives?
The magic of the bicycle is very simple and lends to the personification of the bike. It also allows for a good classroom conversation about identifying the elements of the story that show that the bike is magic. This story could also be used in a lower elementary classroom as the lead in to a creative writing assignment. Students could write about things they would do if they had a magic bike or other magical inanimate object.
The illustrations were beautifully done and complimented the story perfectly.
Thank you to #NetGalley and to #MariaMonte for an ARC of her book #Ellery’sMagicBicycle . The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. 3.5 stars, rounded to 4
Ellery finds a purple bicycle which turns out to be a magic bicycle.
The bicycle becomes her companion, but as she grows older she forgets about the bicycle but she is reunited with it later in life.
This is a joyful book with wonderful illustrations.
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this read.
The book was a poignant story of a girl and her bicycle. This magic bicycle wasn’t ordinary, it had magic powers it would play the games she wanted. It would take her on many travels throughout the countryside. They had a special friendship that allowed for one more, you have to read the rest for yourself. The story moved me to wane nostalgic and made me cry for what was. Young children can read and relate to the story and brought a tear for I had a bicycle bthst I would ride for hours all over our small townYes I will be recommending this book and will buy when my granddaughter is older, thanks to NetGalley,Marla Monte and #Ellery’sMagicBicycle for the opportunity to read early.
One day Ellery finds a bicycle, and to her wonder this bicycle is magical, it grows with Ellery, and to some point, it gives reason to Ellery life. It is a cute story, perfect for children from early age to kids who are starting to read alone.
Has bright colours and nice drawings I highly recommend this story to everyone.
I got a free copy of this ARC through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Ellery's Magic Bicycle is a cute story geared to 4-7 year old children.
I read this book to two children aged four and five.
They both loved the idea that the bicycle could grow along with Ellery.
One favorite part was when Ellery was grow up and had her own baby. The other one liked that Ellery was still riding the bike as an adult.
The book also deals with some serious matters too, such as a friend moving away and older toys being neglected as children grow older. A sweet and happy ending finishes the book off perfectly.
Thanks to netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the arc.
Review to come end of April on blog/Goodreads/etc..
I received this book from Netgalley/author in exchange of an honest review.
When I got the mail from the author if I was interested in reading her new book I was hyped! Of course, yes! I would love to read your newest book! I really enjoyed Evie's Ducklings and I was eager to see what new story she had written.
In this cute book we meet a girl named Ellery! One day while walking around she finds a purple bicycle. All old and rusted! But then, BOOM, SHIMMY, SPARKLE, the bike is all good again and Ellery takes it home with her! I just loved how she took it home and how they had a bond! Yes, that sounds weird, but really, read the book. You will see it too! I loved that it learned her to cycle. And it was indeed quite a magical bike given what happened later on! I loved that her bike was always there for her. For sad moments and happy moments.
And then a new kid appears in Ellery's street. I wasn't too happy with those pages, not a fan of throwing pebbles and then retaliating with mud pies. Thankfully, with the help of the bike, something happy happened between them! And that made me smile!
However from then things go a bit fast for me. Did I miss some pages because of what I talk about in the paragraph below? Or did it really just hop step to years later? At times it felt a bit disjointed. Especially how Ellery apparently never left her parents home? Or did she move back? Plus, I just hadn't seen her and Charlie in that way, it was sweet, but really I would have liked just a bit more on that front. A few more pages.
Sadly, the epub didn't really exactly work for me! I could see mostly the top half of the illustrations and I had to stretch out my ADE over my two PC screens to see that. I am not sure what went wrong with the file, but I am going to be re-reading this book when I get the chance. For now I could still get the story (at least most sometimes I just had to guess a bit) and see most of the illustrations so I kept on reading, but I do want to re-read it to get the full experience!
The last pages had me a bit worried! Oh no, she wouldn't do that, would she? But in the end things go right and I was so happy!
The illustrations are so pretty and I absolutely love the soft colours used~
All in all, I really need to re-read this one when I get the chance. I just feel like I missed out on things due to the broken format of the file, plus, I want to enjoy the book a bit more without the frustration of ADE constantly crashing. I will probably also update my rating then (for now 3.5 stars). I am happy that I read it though because despite the file errors this was a magical and delightful book with a dash of magic!
What an absolutely darling book! I loved the progression & watching Ellery grow alongside her bike. However, it almost felt like too many stories in one. Perhaps their could’ve been more elaboration on each life stage in separate books. It felt as though I’d missed something in certain parts of the story, like when Charlie moved away, but then they had a baby together. I’m also aware reviewing this from an adult mindset is not how the target audience of children will perceive it. My 6 year old niece loved it, especially the illustrations! Well done 👍
While the book was sweet, it also felt like something was missing. A girl and her awesome magical bike!? How cool is that?? Unfortunately though, the story didn’t capture that coolness the way it could have. While I understand picture books need to get a storyline across quickly, it felt like the jump from just a girl enjoying her bike to married woman with a family was sudden and forced. I personally see this as a story for adults who want to read something heartfelt and reminisce on their childhood rather than for a kid who wants to dream about what would happen if they had a magical bike too.
Ellery finds a lonely, abandoned bike. It turns out to be a magical bike! Ellery and the bicycle grow together, make friends, and make lots of memories together.
This book is a sweet, wonderful kids' book about the joys of spending time outside and bike riding. I would definitely recommend this to any family. I'll be reading this with my kiddos soon!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy via NetGalley in return for sharing my thoughts on this book. I thank the author and publisher for this opportunity!
This was such a sweet book! I could definitely see myself reading this to my own children. It’s entertaining for both children and adults and I feel like it can provide a lot of life lessons for younger kids.
The artwork in the book is very detailed and nice to look at. The bright colors will keep kids interested in the story and there are a lot of things to look at on the pictures.
Overall this was a great book and I can see s lot of people enjoying to read!
This book was very reminiscent of the Giving Tree, as it showed a child's growth and how the bicycle grew along with her. There was some sadness, but it was redeemed in the end. Very simple but pretty illustrations.
Lots of opportunities to make fun sounds of the bicycle while reading aloud.
Ellery’s Magic Bicycle by Maria Monte and illustrated by Zoe Saunders is a beautiful story of a girl and her bond with her bicycle. If you are looking for a short graphic story to tell your kids, then this book serves the purpose. I have a 5 year old boy and, I am definitely going to read this one out.
The book, definitely, deserves 5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.
This is a short children's book about a little girl who finds a bicycle. They grow up together, and through life, the bicycle is a friend to the girl. It helps her, protects her, and allows her to make friends. As the girl grows older, the bike is forgotten, and then found again.
The story has possibility, but I thought it jumped to a conclusion between the girl and her friend without a connecting piece. I also thought the writing could have been better.
I did like the illustrations, they were colorful and sweet.
I liked the idea of a bicycle playing a major part in the story, as most children learn to ride a bike and use it for exercise, to gather with friends, and for transportation,.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
This is a simple but charming and uplifting read about Ellery, whose most trusty companion over the years is her magic bicycle. But as the years pass by and she grows up, the less time she spends on her bike.
I thought the prose was just okay. The story felt disjointed at some parts, almost like it could do with an extra page or two in between some scenes. However, I loved the themes of friendship as well as the gorgeous illustrations and soft colour palette.
I also find myself thinking about what I might have neglected and forgotten over the years. This is a very nostalgic read that many will appreciate.
