I have just finished reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden.

This is a Psychological Thriller, and the first book that I have read by the Author.

Nina Winchester lives in a beautiful house, has a handsome husband and a young daughter. This perfect lifestyle and family who have more that a few secrets.

They are looking for a maid to assist with household chores, when along comes Millie for an interview. She has many secrets of her own and is currently living in the backseat of her car.

There are some dramatic twists and turns at the mid point of the book, and quite a few surprizes thrown in as well.

An enjoyable read, but for me had a bit of a harlequin romance feeling to it, however a good read just the same.

Thank You to NetGalley, Author Freida McFadden, and Bookouture for my advanced copy to read and review.

The Housemaid (by Freida McFadden), is exactly what it says it is. A thriller with plenty of plot twists to keep you reading. I admit, I don't usually read books with this particular thriller formula, but this one did keep me hooked!

Millie is an ex-con who's always getting buffeted by the more tornado-like winds of chance. She's been struggling with finding and keeping a job and a roof over her head, as she needs to have both to keep from violating her parole. But she's wound up getting fired, and her only roof is the one her old, small car provides. She beyond sick of eating the kinds of sandwiches that will keep in a small cooler, and she's desperate to change her circumstances as another meeting with her parole officer looms large on her horizon. So she takes a chance on an interview for a job she assumes she won't pass the background check for. What's she got to lose at this point, besides her freedom? To her shock, she's offered a job, with living space in the home of a wealthy family. All she has to do is keep it clean, cook dinner, and occasionally pick up the daughter from school. But then the oddities start too stack up. The new boss is a nightmare of epic proportions, the daughter hates her guts, and she falling for the handsome and charming husband. It's all here, these little bomb makings, mashed together and ready to explode. You can practically hear the timer ticking. Let the fun and games begin!

The Housemaid follows it's formula perfectly. I admit I did struggle to really care for any of the characters at first, as they're all kind of morally in the muck together. However, as more and more comes to light (or the shadows of the dark hallways where Millie's tiny room is), the reader is forced to admit that something more is going on than they thought. And that maybe appearances are even more deceiving than we're led to believe. I did figure out the main twist, but the author did keep me reading and she definitely had that plot twisting in the winds right along with Millie. I liked that the one thing Millie did that was flat out wrong did feel organically like something someone you might know would do, given the same circumstances. I'm being vague so as not to give away a major plot point here, but McFadden is very good wending through the twists and turns of her tale while keeping everything natural for that character to do. I really liked the character of the lawn care guy. The deceptively simple plot wasn't so simple and kept my interest. It really reminded me of the classic horror movies of the 80's in a way. The book made me want to yell at the pages "Don't go upstairs, girl!"

Overall, I enjoyed the ride while reading The Housemaid. It hit all the points it was supposed to but included much more in the way of plot twists than you'd normally get. Freida McFadden did a bang up job of keeping her plot points straight. The couple times I thought maybe she'd forgotten something, she'd slip in another turn of the story line and clean it all up. The ending wrapped up neatly, and it was exactly what you'd want in a good, exciting beach read. It's the perfect vacation book! Just don't read it before bed, or you'll be up all night reading to see what happens. This was my first time reading a book written by McFadden. It won't be the last.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, BookOuture for the digital copy of this book in return for my honest review.

Absolutely Brilliant
What a page turner of a book from start to finish, Millie is living in her car she has had a hard time being in prison and not being able to keep jobs, Nina is married to Andrew they are extremely well off, Millie applies for the live in housekeeper job, not is all as it seems in this household, Millie thinks Nina is a tad crazy and hears the rumours in regards to Nina being lock up in a psychiatric hospital, Andrew seems to put up with Nina’s strange behaviour but this is where the book gets interesting and absolutely no spoilers from me, the truth comes out in the end congratulations Frieda McFadden this book is brilliant

I’m not a huge fan of domestic thrillers but this one was very intriguing from the start. There’s something mysterious about Millie…she’s been to jail, is homeless, and has been fired from her most recent job. We don’t know the reason as to why she was convicted, and it isn’t until later on that we find out her big secret. Millie is hired to be the maid at the Winchester household. Nina makes sure to make Millie’s life impossible. She’s at first very nice and then a switch turns on and she becomes a total witch. The plot twist comes half way through the book and I’d say it’s pretty predictable, however that did not deter me from finishing the book. I wanted to know how it would end, and I was not disappointed! The last third of the book is action packed and Millie’s secret is finally revealed. Aside from the plot twist being predictable, it also reminded me a tad bit of The Turn of the Key.

The Housemaid:

Millie, a beautiful young woman, was living in her car because she couldn’t afford to pay rent. Nina Winchester gave her a job. Millie had a secret.

Nina had been a beautiful woman when she married Andrew Winchester, 10 years prior, but she was now somewhat of a frump. No one could understand why Andrew, her extremely handsome husband, stayed with her. They both had secrets.

Cecelia Winchester, the spoiled preteen daughter, also had a secret.

Enzo, the Italian gardener was a big, dark scary-looking guy who spoke no English. He also had a secret.

What is everyone is hiding? This novel is a terrific read. The characters are well developed and the author created an undercurrent of fear that hung eerily in the background. Once you start reading, you’re compelled to read on to find out what all the secrets are. Will someone die?

Many thanks to Bookouture for allowing me the pleasure of reading this delightful mystery.

This was my first thriller from McFadden but it definitely won’t be my last! It was a very fast paced read that kept me guessing. I thought I had it all easily figured out for the first half and then that theory was flipped on its head and I like how it played out

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is a fast-paced, nerve-wracking, spine-chilling, twisted and gripping psychological thriller.

When I started to read the book, I thought this is 'just another domestic suspense with a shocking ending." Boy, was I wrong! Forget shocking ending, almost every chapter of this book is shocking, surprising, bone-chilling, and filled with twists!

There is no doubt this is one of the best psychological thrillers I have ever read! Twists and turns kept me hooked on to the story till the end. The story is divided into three parts. The first part is all about Millie and her treatment at the Winchester house. Part II is... WOW! I never saw the twist coming! I was like, what the heck is happening??? Don't get me started on how terrific Part III is!

Highly recommended!

Young (but not dumb), broke and ex-convict best describe Wilhelmina Calloway or Millie, as she would rather be call. After serving her years in jail, she is on her own with nowhere to go. In desperate measure to get back on her feet, she considered herself lucky enough when she landed herself a job as a maid at the Winchester’s residence. Currently under a parole, she couldn’t afford any trouble even if that means she has to deal with her temperamental employer, Nina Winchester, the lady of the house. As much as Nina and her daughter Cecelia, always gives her an attitude, Millie found solace in Nina’s handsome husband Andrew, who seems nice and normal.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden go beyond my expectations. At the beginning, I thought Millie is a sweet, delicate girl who does nothing but cry and sulk when she’s in difficult situations. But then, as the story goes on with the twist and plot, I find out that is not the case at all. Millie is one strong character. I give her that. She just sucks everything up even when Nina gives her hell because she knows better. Now, if that’s not something ‘admire and inspire’ I don’t know what is.

I don’t have anything against this book. My only problem is that I failed to relate the subtitle (is that what it’s called?) on the cover to the overall story. You see, the words are, “From behind closed doors, she sees everything.” I’m sorry, I just can’t let go because it’s taking up space in my tiny brain more than I’d like to admit. Or is it just me? I mean, what is the real purpose of that phrase? Is it supposed to be a plot twist? TBH, I think the plot twist is a very different story.

That apart, the book is a well-written, fast-paced and entertaining novel. I like the story development and that roller-coaster feeling it gave me created enough mystery to keep you engaged.

I enjoy reading psychological thrillers and, heard good things about this one, so of course I had to read it to see if it lived up to the hype. It did!! There were multiple twists in the novel - some that didn’t surprise me, and some that did. One thing that came out near the end I was happy about because it fit what I had guessed.

The characters were well developed and the book was fast moving. I was disappointed at first when the initial plot twist was revealed because it seemed too predictable. However, that didn’t last long as more twists kept coming. I will definitely read another book by this author!

This was the first book I have read by Freida McFadden, and now, I am adding the rest of her books to my Kindle Unlimited list. This book was just the twisty, unputdownable, twisty thriller that I needed after being in quite a reading slump. I give The Housemaid 4.5 stars! We follow Millie, a young 20-something woman, who is on parole, living in her car, and just wants to get the nanny/housekeeper job that Nina, our other main character, has placed an ad for. Nina is married to to wealthy, handsome Andrew, and has a daughter, Cece. Judging from their outside image, Millie thinks this family is living in a dream, but slowly things begin to unfold right before her eyes. Rumors are flying that Nina is insane, but is she? The atmospheric writing about the "room" in the attic was so well done, it made me actually feel claustrophobic myself just reading it. I just loved how the author made you feel one emotion for one character, and then wham, your eyes are opened and you completely change your perspective of things. This was hard to put down, was a fast read, and even though some of the details of story may be a bit unrealistic, it wasn't enough for me to knock of any of my 4.5 star rating. I look forward to reading more by McFadden!

This book is BONKERS!! Millie has taken a job with the Winchester family to be their live in maid/nanny. They have a big, beautiful house, a nice maintained yard, and a hot gardener with a warning for Millie: danger.

This book is told in three parts from Millie’s perspective and from Nina’s, the mother and homeowner who has some mental issues she dealing with. But she has secrets and so does Millie.

Freida McFadden has become an automatic buy author for me and this book didn’t disappoint. It’s twisty and a disturbing all wrapped up into one. Thank you Netgalley, Freida McFadden, and Bookouture for the advanced copy.
