4.5 stars!
Ok this book was hella crazy and I absolutely loved it. I just couldn’t put the book down! There are so many things that makes you upset in the book not in a bad way but because you feel everything’s so real and you want to slap some characters so badly. The twist wasn’t at all expected and it’s definitely a great thriller book that I have read in a long time.
Really enjoyed this book. It was very well written. Loved the cover too. The book had me hooked from the beginning, love when a book does that. The book is very fast paced which is great. Keeping you on the edge of your seat,
This was the first Frieda McFadden book I have ever read and I am eager to read more. The story line and writing reminded me of a B.A. Paris book and I couldn’t get enough. As you read you think you have it all figured out but there are some twists and turns along the way. This book stands out from others because as you read things seem all too predictable, and then Frieda throws in a monkey wrench to your idea. The ending leaves you wondering if there will be more to come in this story line. I hope there is.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Spine chilling and taut thriller are two things that come to mind when I think about how to describe this book! Wow! What a roller coaster ride! Freida McFadden has mastered the craft of unpredictable, twisted, addictive storytelling! This story is told through the two main characters' points of view - Nina and Millie. Nina is a very wealthy, spoiled woman who is in need of a housekeeper/nanny. Millie is a recent parolee in desperate need of a job, and needless to say finding a job for a convicted felon is not an easy task. After her interview, Millie is blown away by the job offer from Nina. After all who wants a convicted felon living in their house and taking care of their kid! Since Millie is living in her car, this is like a dream come true for her. However, she soon will feel as if she has been dropped into an alternate universe! Nina definitely has issues, but Millie really needs the job, so she will continue to bite her tongue. She can even bear living in the spooky attic (cue the creepy music). There are some strange characters in this story, but they will definitely serve their purpose in completing this wickedly disturbing psychological thriller. This is a twisted tale which will have you glued to your seat until the satisfying conclusion! Freida McFadden knows how to pull you into a story and leave your mouth hanging open with the turns and twists! I also appreciate that she does not "waste" words or pages going into great detail. She just tells the story and draws you in! Find a chair and prepare to read for awhile!
I found this to be a really speedy read thanks to the short chapters.
I didn’t really feel drawn to any of the characters but still found it an enjoyable read.

Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I was so so gripped by this book from the first few pages, I found it impossible to put it down.
The house is so dysfunctional, you really don’t know where the danger is coming from and it’s such a well thought out plot. I really didn’t expect the twist.
The characters are erratic and mysterious so you never quite know where you stand but all the same you are so invested in what is coming next that its really compulsive and gripping reading!
Its pacing is fast and covers ground quickly, it’s utterly packed with suspense and action.
I found the changes in perspective fabulous, as even though I groaned in suspense as I was on the verge of finding out what happens next those new spins really build the story as a whole.
This is a new author for me but I’m tempted to run out now and buy all previously written books, as this was a masterclass of a page-turner!
The Housemaid blew me away! When I first started this book I expected it to be like the other domestic thrillers I have read and let me say I was wrong to assume! Twist after twist with a wonderfully satisfying ending!
I found the first part of the book a slow burner, setting the scene and getting to know the three main characters. Luckily, I continued with the rest of the book and it turned into a dark thriller that kept me turning the pages. I really enjoyed this book, not too taxing on the brain so will be a great holiday read!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for this e – review copy.
Wow this was quite the thriller! You may think you can guess what will happen next but be prepared for many jaw-dropping twists and turns. This was unbelievably engaging!
I almost stopped reading towards the end of part 1 as I was starting to get tired of Millie and Nina's relationship and Andrew's passivity. But I'm glad I continued because the story picks up and becomes an unputdownable page turner after that.
The story is very dark and has very disturbing details. This is a story of domestic abuse and violence. The ending is unexpected but some twists are predictable.
I received an ARC from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
4.5 stars! This book was a roller coaster ride I didn’t want to get off of (and I don’t even like roller coasters…haha). It was told from two points of view and although I didn’t really like the characters, I still couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was coming next. Fans of psychological thrillers should definitely add this book to their list. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Millie is fresh out of jail and homeless, so when she is offered a position as a housekeeper working for the very wealthy Winchester family, she jumps at the chance. After living in the backseat of her car for so long, even the stuffy attic the Winchester family offers her is a blessing. In fact, Millie is so desperate to start over that she tolerates the constant back-and-forth moods of Nina Winchester and the completely intolerable brattiness of Nina’s daughter, Cecelia. And although gorgeous and rich Andrew Winchester is accommodating and generous with Millie, he is almost never home. But there are dark secrets in the Winchester home, and soon Millie is right in the middle of it. Now she must give up the life she covets in order to have a life at all.
Freida McFadden’s new novel, “The Housemaid” was intriguing, entertaining and very, very disturbing. It has a lot of similarities to other novels in this genre, especially “The Wife Upstairs” (but perhaps that is because I just finished “Wife” a week ago). Unlike the other novels though, I enjoyed the characters in “Housemaid”. Millie is desperate, as opposed to naïve, and she is neither vapid nor shallow, falling into a life of luxurious wealth, instead of coveting and plotting to take it from the onset. Obviously, Nina is not immediately likable, and McFadden has written her that way, but she becomes more relatable as the horrible secrets she is keeping come to light.
“Housemaid” is told in three parts; the first part is narrated by Millie, from the moment she is hired on until the climax. Then we hear from Nina, whose haunting perspective starts at her relationship with Andrew and continues right on through their harrowing marriage. The third perspective is a combination of both women, once their stories have converged and the ending is being plotted. This alternating perspective helped to understand both women and their choices, while still managing to keep the plot’s thick tension and suspense.
McFadden is obviously a talented writer, and “Housemaid” proves it. As a novel with an overdone premise, the story itself still managed to be engaging and suspenseful, which speaks to McFadden’s storytelling skill. I loved all the twists and turns, and the ending delivered the right amount of retribution and satisfaction to all the characters. “Housemaid” was the first novel I’ve read by McFadden, and I am definitely going to put her on my watch list going forward.
Oh my goodness, what a gripping story this is. I was hooked from the very first page until the very end. I couldnt put it down ! It is so dark and twisty with some positively evil characters but a brilliant story. This is a new author for me but Freida, I will be looking out for more of your writing.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read the ARC
Ok, what to say...this was compulsively readable, I didn't want to put it down. I thought the twists were interesting and relatively unexpected so I definitely enjoyed that. I did find the writing slightly juvenile and often times repetitive however it didn't stop me from enjoying the wild ride with Nina, Millie, and Andrew. There's a fair bit of weight talk and judgement so if you're sensitive to that topic, just an fyi. Thanks so much for the opportunity to read this one!
I was fortunate enough to have received an arc copy from NetGalley. The Housemaid is a brilliant story (bit dark), I loved it and was gripped from the fist chapter. It seems like the dream job for someone with a chequered background. It offered great wages and accommodation, that was until until the dream becomes a nightmare.Lots of twists and turns which kept me glued till the end.
Nothing is as it seems and nobody is who they appear to be! The Housemaid is an addictive, twisted tale of domestic abuse and revenge. Despite a cast of largely difficult-to-like characters, this book is difficult to put down and keeps the reader wanting to discover what will happen next.
Thanks to Freida McFadden, Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review this advance copy. I love all Freida McFadden books but this is my new favorite! Twisty plot that will keep you guessing. I highly recommend reading this one.
Nina is a recently released felon, down on her luck, jobless, living in her car and in desperate need for a job not only so she can get out of her car, but to keep up with the rules of her parole because the last thing that she wants is to go back to prison. She applies for a position as a maid/nanny for a rich couple, she really doesn't even think she will get it, but tries anyway. Miraculously Nina Winchester offers her the job and it's a dream come true! Free room and board, a hefty paycheck and all she has to do is watch a couples daughter and clean the house. Her boss, Nina, is even so nice to her, what could go wrong? As soon as her first day starts, she realizes that what she got into may be over her head, but she needs this job and she loves the money- the question is, will she survive this nightmare?
This book starts off strong and it continues to stay that way throughout the book, never fading in keeping your attention. The first sentence If I leave this house, it will be in handcuffs. reels you in and starts the questioning of the book. I was hooked on the premise of this book because I always wondered why anyone would want to have live in help and this story really made me question everyones motives around me. Freida, like usual writes the characters in such a way that you think you know them, and you feel their emotions too. I thought that I had the story figured out, I even thought outside of the box, but by the halfway mark Freida once again reminded me that she thinks outside of any box you could imagine and explodes your line of thinking.
This is a fast paced, exciting thriller that you are not going to want to put down, so make sure that when you start this you have time to finish it or you will go to bed wishing you did. This book sent bone chilling shivers throughout my body with the biggest twist of them all right towards the end, you may think that you'll see every twist coming but I can assure you that your jaw will be on the floor by the end of the book. The last twist is a Behind Closed Doors ending and you'll be thinking about it for time to come.
The next time someone asks for a thriller that lingers in my mind, this will be the one that I tell everyone about. A 100/10 in my book.
Don't forget, most things in life are privileges so don't take them for granted.
3.5 STARS! This book is a page-turner, and I was thoroughly engrossed with what would happen next!
Millie is on parole and struggling to land a job when the perfect position seems to fall in her lap! As a live-in maid for a wealthy family, she feels like she has won the lottery! But as soon as she begins, her new boss start exhibiting some bizarre behavior. Is Millie safe working for this family?
I really enjoyed the story, but the twist was so similar to another book I have read and loved. Since the stories were so similar (and I feel the other book was better done), I knocked off a star from this one.
Also, the ending seemed a bit rushed to me. I would have liked for more details of what happened in the gap of time we didn’t see!
Millie is a year into her parole and living in her car when she gets the chance to be a maid for a wealthy family.
Since it is a live in position it solves all of her problems.
Nina is the mother of Cecelia and wife to Andrew.
When Millie starts to hear the rumors about Nina's mental hospital stay, things start to make a little more sense to Millie.
The Housemaid starts out simple enough but that doesn't last too long. This is one wild ride! The building tension was on point. You should read this one!
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
