Millie has pretty much hit rock bottom. She lost her job and her apartment and is now living in her car. A job as a maid for the wealthy Winchester family might not seem glamorous, but it comes with a room, and a bed, and Millie is desperately hoping they don't check her references because she needs this job. She feels like the interview with Nina went well and she is thrilled to be offered the position.
She's a little disconcerted to find that Nina is an unpleasant slob, her daughter CeCe, a spoiled brat, and Andrew is too good-looking and too good for Nina. But she bites her tongue because, without this job, it's back to her old car or worse. Scrubbing all day, and dreaming of Andrew all night, Millie soon learns that money isn't what makes a happy family. Something is wrong under this roof, but it just might present an opportunity for all of Millie’s dreams to come true.
The majority of the story is told from Millie’s POV, and when it changes to Nina’s, it does it with a bang. Yep, right at the really good part, I'm zipping my lips shut, because of spoilers. Short chapters that led me to read just one more because I had to know what would be the catalyst to blow this household apart. My first book by this author and it was indeed a wild and crazy ride. 4.5 stars.
I just got done reading an ARC of “The Housemaid” and all I can say is WOW!! If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers with shocking twists, you will love this book as much as I do! I’m a huge fan of Freida McFadden and have ready every one of her books. This one is the best yet!
This was an amazing read to that kept me hooked right to the grisly, jaw dropping end. Well developed characters and a twisty, unpredictable plot this is a well deserved five stars.
Millie is an ex con living in her car just trying to change her situation. Enter Nina. A wife/mother who needs a maid. Millie thinks she’s hit the jackpot and quickly accepts the position. What she doesn’t know is that she will be living in a house of horrors.
This book was AMAZING. The best from Freida McFadden as of yet. The twists and turns are superb and keep you guessing until the very end where she lays yet another twist on you. Highly recommend!
The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is easily a five star read from an author who has very quickly become a personal favourite.
Millie is struggling, having recently been released from prison. Living out of her car, she is desperate to secure some kind of employment, and becoming a maid to the Winchester family seems to be the answer to her prayers. But as the days pass, the toll of taking care of a recalcitrant child, and dealing with the demands of a woman who seems to suffer from some kind of personality disorder, begin to catch up with her, and Millie must reassess the job that keeps her from living in her car. What secrets does the Winchester home harbour, and is Millie's mounting paranoia about Nina justified, or simply a figment of her imagination?
This is a thrilling and chilling tale that had me hooked from the opening lines. If you are new to the writing of Freida McFadden, you are in for a treat.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
The cover of The Housemaid by Freida McFadden says the book is an absolutely addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist. Yes, this is true and more! Wowza, what an intense ride. There were times I wanted to throw my Kindle across the room at how Nina treated Millie. The story unfolds beautifully with intense and cringe-worthy scenes.
The story was heart-pounding, and I was screaming at the characters to not do some of their actions.
The Housemaid ended so well and was quite satisfying. This is such a good book and written so well that I didn't want it to end and leave the characters!

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.
Writing: 3? 2? idk out of 5 | Plot: ????2???/5 | Ending: 5/5 tbh
This is a ???2.5???? rounded up...??? Idk.
THE PLOT
Millie is living in Casa Nissan aka her car when she's hired as the maid for the Winchesters, a ridiculously wealthy family. She's over the moon to have a job and a bed, but she quickly realizes something funky is happening in the home. And she's not sure if she'll make it out alive... dun dun dunnnnnn!!!
MY OPINION
Honestly... I'm confusion. This is how I felt after I read The Trapped Wife by Samantha Hayes. On one hand, this was garbagio, on the other hand, it had some things that kept me reading and enjoying myself. It's a book I love to hate and hate to love all at once. Ok, let me try to make sense of thoughts:
- Millie's POV is straight up "dear diary" style. As in, "I spent 7 hours cleaning the house and I thought about Andy Winchester's bangin bod the entire time. He is so dreamy. Does he like me too????" It's also giving me "rages to riches" fanfic written by a tween vibes. BUT AT THE SAME DAMN TIME... the book was legit funny in parts???? Like great dark humour throughout????
- Millie's character makes no sense. Not a spoiler—she spends 10 years in jail. Yet she has zero survival skills and seems relatively unbothered by the fact she was locked up for an entire decade. I'm telling you right now I can't last 10 MINUTES in jail unscathed, so a whole ass decade would have me coming out on some Rambo shit.
- I did not like Nina. She was over the top, selfish, and illogical. I can't feel sorry for what she went through because .... No spoilers.... but if you read it, you'll know.
- The "mystery" is kinda obvious. It's like The Wife Between Us mixed with... idk, Gone Girl? There wasn't really any suspense. You know what's gonna happen. From Part II onward I was speed reading like a mf. But I was invested in the whole revenge vibe like ok girl go OFFFFFF.
- I gave the ending 5/5 because it's women's history month and that's all I can say without spoiling it
- I've read Locked Door by this author and this was a totally different vibe. Good for her for going in a totally different direction with no projection of her medical career/knowledge in the story. I'm not sure if it worked, but at least the ending was better than Locked Door.
Anyways. I really think this is more of a 2 star... but for now I'm throwing this a 3 because I appreciated the ending and the dark humour. I can see people really enjoying this or really hating it. Do not expect this to be a literary masterpiece. You will not be mentally stimulated in any way. This is your standard popcorn thriller but not as annoying as Unmissing, Stay Awake, etc because of the dark humour. This is the type of book you read after something like My Dark Vanessa that shatters your soul.
PROS AND CONS
Pros: you'll keep reading because you don't know if you like it or hate it, awesome dark humour, great ending
Cons: vapid plot and characters, rags to riches fanfic written by a 14 yo vibes, dear diary ass writing,
I just finished this book in 2 days and all I can say is Wow!!! This book did not disappoint! It was hard to put down. I had to know what would happen next. It’s a devious tale of revenge that will keep you guessing up until the end. And the last few chapters will definitely surprise you. This author never fails to deliver on suspense!
Name of Book: The Housemaid
Author: Freida McFadden
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Publisher: Bookouture
Pub Date: April 26, 2022
My Rating: 4.7 rounded up
I am a big Psychological thriller fan! When I read [Freida McFadden’s book "The Wife Upstirs", I knew I had to read another!
Millie Calloway needs a job. She is living in her car as she has been let go of her recent job. She is in her early twenties but has already been in prison (we don’t have the details on this but it does get in the way of her getting employed.)
She gets the opportunity to work as the Housemaid for Nina and Andrew Winchester a very wealthy couple. Millie and Nina hit if off in the interview and Millie is hoping she won’t do a background check. Turns out both the cook and house cleaner just quit and Nina jumps at hiring Millie.
Millie is thrilled as this is a live-in position.
Nina is a high stressed, spoiled rich lady and her young daughter Cecelia is a spoiled rich little girl with an attitude. Worst of all Nora seems to have mental issues perhaps bi-polar. She makes a mess of everything in a matter of minutes so Millie’s housemaid position turns into being not only the maid but the cook and house cleaner as well.
Andrew is very wealthy, handsome, and is very tolerant of Nina; he seems just perfect!
This was GREAT Freida McFadden does not disappoint.
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for this eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for an honest professional review.

This was such a good book. It was well written with a gripping storyline and characters that were really well developed. It was fast paced, suspenseful, full of tension and had me on the edge of my seat. Twisty and unpredictable with an ending that blew me away, Iloved it.
Cant say enough great this about yes this Author and this book!!! Had me loving it so much I couldn't put it down. Such a great twist that you might think but not sure..just jaw dropping great.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
Best psycho husband book I have read since “Behind Closed Doors” By B..A Paris. This is exactly what I love to read and I could not put it down! If you like revenge you will love this.
Thanks NetGalley for giving me this copy.
I was totally hooked on the plot. Never judge the story by its cover....!
Twisty, creepy, page-turning thriller!
Totally shiver down my spine when I was reading the book. Keep guessing the reason behind of each move and I promise this is the thriller you want to read this year!
A housemaid, a happily married couple with a little daughter and a landscaper in a luxurious house….what can be happened in this house? I can feel their distinct emotions in each character.
There’s no doubt that I highly recommend The Housemaid to all my thriller friends!
This is a fast paced domestic thriller. There are three main characters.
Millie - the newly hired housemaid who is just trying to be polite and keep this job, so she doesn’t have to go back to living in her car
Nina - the snarky wife who you’ll be rolling your eyes at a lot
Andrew - the doting husband
This story has a lot of twists and turns and is definitely a “read in one sitting” type of book. Loved it.
The story started with a bang, wanting you to know exactly what happened. Frieda is a fast-paced writer who knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seats. Although she makes it all look so effortless, I've read a lot of psychological thrillers and know how difficult it is to keep the reader's interest throughout. I loved all the different twists that this book had and it was a great thriller I would definitely recommend it to any whos a fan of this genre.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this eArc in exchange for an honest review.
4.75⭐️
A new author to me with this domestic thriller which came highly recommended. This author is highly regarded for her psychological thrillers.
In this domestic setting we have 3 main characters, Millie, who takes a job as a housemaid, having a past she is trying to move on from.
Andrew the husband who is struggling, and Nina the piece of work wife.
It starts in the present with the police in attendance, then moves time frame to 3 months earlier.
From the interview the reader is given vibes of foreboding.
It’s written in an easy going writing style, which makes for easy enjoyable reading. The transitions throughout are smooth and edge of the seat convincing. The plot has good complexity.
The characters are all really well developed. Some are likeable, others not. It’s hard to give further detail.
I absolutely loved this book. It kept me totally engrossed. I did have a slight issue with one aspect of the ending. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
This book was another crazy ride from my favorite author, Freida McFadden.
Millie is down on her luck living in her car after recently being released from prison when she answers an ad from Nina Winchester looking for a housemaid. Nina Winchester presents herself as friendly and normal at the interview but when Nina shows up for the job what she sees is the complete opposite. Nina appears to be unstable and does whatever she can to make Millie’s job difficult. Nina’s husband, Andrew is very helpful and tries to make her feel comfortable. The gardener, Enzo who only speaks Italian, acts strangely, and manages to get a warning to her telling her she is in danger.
This book took a CRAZY turn at the halfway mark. And I mean CRAZY. In typical Freida fashion, the ending was jaw dropping. You never know what direction her books are going to take and this one was no exception.
Freida’s masterful storytelling is no nonsense. She has a way of drawing you into the story from the very first chapter and once you start reading you will not be able to stop. I loved how all the chapters ended in a cliffhanger making you want more. I felt so much dread trying to figure out what was going to happen next. This book was absolutely riveting and thrilling from beginning to end.
I think this book is gong to be the book everyone recommends when asked, “What is the best psychological/domestic thriller you have ever read?”. I will be recommending this book for years to come. This is her best yet!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my e-ARC.
Wow wow wow. Just love this author and everything she has written! This was one of those books that sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let go until I finished! I thought it was well written, with absolutely flawlessly done characters, and absolutely unputdownable. Dark, grisly and utterly compelling. Thriller writing at its finest!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Frieda McFadden for the ARC of this book!
Millie Calloway doesn’t have it easy. She’s been trying to find a job and has been living out of her car. When she lands a job as a maid for the affluent Winchester family, she is grateful. While a small stuffy room in the attic is where Millie stays in this beautiful house, she is happy to just be able to be on a bed, instead of in the backseat of her car. She is determined to make Nina, and her daughter Cece like her. She cleans the house daily, picks Cece up from school when needed, and cooks for Nina, Cece and Nina’s husband Andrew daily. Nina can be rude – rude to Millie, and rude to her husband. Mille begins to wonder why Andrew would stay with Nina. Millie soon finds out that the Winchesters are not as perfect on the outside as they may seem; they have secrets. But what the Winchesters don’t know is that Millie has secrets of her own, and they have no idea what she is capable of.
This book started off with a bang. It engaged me right away and kept me engaged the entre time. It took me less than 24 hours to read this book because it just flowed so nicely, and it is fast paced. The story is told from Nina’s and Millie’s point of view. It starts out with Millie’s and by the time you get to Nina’s, it’s shocking what is revealed. The suspense was perfectly and artfully built up throughout the entire book. I will not put any spoilers on here, but I especially loved the ending, the very chapter of the book.
This book releases on April 26, 2022, you can pre-order your copy here.
This is the first book I've read by McFadden and it won't be my last. The Housemaid was intriguing, suspenseful, and fast-paced. Millie is an ex-con who desperately needs a job since she's living in her car. Being a maid for wealthy Nina and Andrew Winchester seems like a dream come true, except Nina exhibits signs of a mental illness and Millie finds Andrew extremely attractive. Nina is emotionally and verbally abusive to both Millie and Andrew. The book is divided into two parts: Millie's POV and then Nina's POV.
Not all is what it seems in the Winchester home and McFadden does a great job laying it all out.
Highly recommend!
