"“Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…
Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.
I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.
I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.
But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.
They don’t know what I’m capable of…"
I quite enjoyed this book. Full of twists and turns and characters who are not what they appear to be. Nina was my favourite character in this book, I can't really say much more without giving away the plot. Definitely will be looking for more from this author..
love a good twisty, turny, psychological thriller, and The Housemaid certainly didn't disappoint. I don't like to say much about books that are advertised as having a twist, because much as I like them, I don't really like to know if a book has a huge plot twist, because then I'm constantly trying to guess what the twist will be. And if I'd first seen this advertised on Amazon as it was - "The Housemaid: An absolutely addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist" - I mean it was right there in the title! - I probably wouldn't have given it a try. (I'm sure that type of titling works for some people, I'm just not one of them.) Happily that's not how it was titled when I saw it offered on Netgalley so I gave it a try, and I'm really happy I did. It definitely kept me engaged and guessing and gave me a few surprises.
I mostly listened to this one, and the narration was very good - Lauryn Allman did an excellent job of giving Millie (the housemaid) and Nina (her employer) distinctly different voices.
And that's about all I can say without giving away too much. Enjoy!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copies of both the ebook and the audiobook for an unbiased review.
Somehow these nanny jobs for rich families in their massive estates never end well and this is no exception! But of course, the heroine leads us through this twisty story. New author for me who apparently is a brain injury specialist physician...seems there will be lots more stories to tell.
Nina Winchester needs a live-in maid to cook, clean and occasionally babysit in her posh Long Island home. Millie is currently living in her car and if she doesn’t get a job soon her parole officer will send her back to prison. She is excited when she lands the position and can start the next day. Until the Italian gardener looks at her as she walks to the door on her first day and tells her “danger”.
Nina is mercurial. One minute she is nice to Millie, the next minute she is rude and throwing things on the floor for Millie to pick up. All while accusing Millie that she lost or wasn’t careful enough with Nina’s possessions. Nina’s husband is the exact opposite of his wife. Andrew is handsome and as patient as he can be trying to deal with Nina’s erratic behavior. He and Millie hit it off from the beginning and it doesn’t take long for them to feel a spark between them. When Andrew finally asks Nina to move out, Millie thinks her luck has changed.
This is a fast-paced novel that grabbed my attention from day one and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. It was a fun, surprising storyline that keeps you guessing until the end. The ending was my only complaint, it was tied up too neatly but it was satisfying. It keep me on my toes guessing what was going to happen next.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
It started slow for me. I wasn't really getting into it. But the more I read it, the more I was hooked. And even though I was expecting a twist, I wasn't expecting that twist. I wish there had beed a little more backstory on one of the characters (won't say who because I don't want to spoil anything).
Great summer thriller and a lot of fun to read. I will definitely try this author again.
This book had me hooked! It starts off gripping and keeps you hooked until the end. I thought it was a great take on the 'house maid' / nanny books that have been releasing of late and thoroughly enjoyed it!
Such a twisty rollercoaster ride of a book! Given from several perspectives it keeps you on your toes and keeps you guessing from page to page! Definitely couldn't put it down til I finished it! If you like a good mystery/ thriller then this is for you..
The Housemaid is holy wow cow! It reminds me of Behind Closed Doors but with a lot more twists and wtf/wth in pretty much every chapter! I stayed up all night into the early morning reading it and 5 stars!
Interesting characters, intriguing plot, and good writing. The reader becomes comfortable in what they think is taking place, and then discover, all is not what it seems. Very good thriller.

Great story with lots of unexpected twists and turns which will leave you wondering right up to the very last page! This tale of Millie, down on her luck and looking for a job and somewhere to live, finds herself as a live in housekeeper for Nina and Andy. All is not as it appears for this seemingly glamorous couple and Millie finds herself wondering what she’s let herself in for….
Wow, wow, wow. I loved this book!! I listened to it as an audiobook. It was fast-paced, interesting, believable and shocking! The characters were fabulous. I started off thinking it was the usual maid falling for the husband of the house but it was so much more than that! A really good listen.
Thank you NetGalley and auntie for this book. What a really great book. Nine is something else, you can’t help but love Millie. Enzo is such an amazing character in this book with such a twist my head spun. The description’s in this book are so clear I felt like I was watching the story before my eyes. Will definitely be recommending this book to people.
A great story full of mystery and suspense,, I really liked the short sharp chapters, and the eye catching cover definitely drew me in. The plots takes a different direction then expected and has more twists and turns then the Big Dipper rolls coaster, i definitely recommend if you love faced paced thrillers you won’t feel disappointed.
The plot twist is really one of the thing I didn't expected much but then I've had a good feeling it'll boil to down to it. My first read from the author and definitely didn't disappoint me, it gives me chills and had me up all night reading this. I can't stop myself because like Millie, I want to unravel the mystery between the so called happy family of the Winchester and it definitely something up between it.
The storyline was like a diary and it didn't bore me because I like the story and I like how the characters were able to connected somehow and the ending was somewhat predictable. Hoping to read more stories from the author.
Thanks Netgalley for a copy of Housemaid by Freida McFadden.
5 stars one of the best novels I've read this year , I honestly read it in one sitting. Fast pace twist and turns I highly recommend. Best book 2022 so far.
Wow, this one was different. I was expecting a different vibe. Overall, it’s a page turner. It’s got the multiple POVs, which works well for this story. Mollie is happy to have a job after being in prison, and this house maid work means she’s got a place to live and food to eat. Yet, her client is very finicky and gaslights her often. She wonders what is going on and if danger is as imminent as she feels.
The sections of the book are laid out well to explain each facet of the story, including the background of why she was in prison and what’s really going on where she is working.
I think it was a good twist, but it was nothing I’ve not seen before. Still, it’s a pretty solid book and the ending was a decent surprise. I enjoy this author and would continue to read her next book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the digital review copy.
This is one of those tricky books to review, I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. I was initially attracted to the outstanding cover and the excellent marketing effort put in by Bookouture, making this sound like the most incredible book.
The plot is quite clever. Millie lives in the back of her car, having been out of jail for only a year and being sacked from her last job flipping burgers. So she goes for an interview for a job as a 'housekeeper', a cleaner with a few extra chores for Nina, her husband Andy and her nine-year-old daughter, Cecelia. While she doesn't think she stands a chance to work at this beautiful, huge house, Nina calls to offer her the role a few days later.
We follow their journey through the eyes of Nina and Millie, and there are some clever, brilliant twists. I knew something was coming, but not that, not in a million years. This demonstrates the excellent imagination of Freida McFadden. I enjoyed the plot and following their journey, surprises and all.
The characters were well-drawn, I felt I knew them well, but ultimately, I didn't like them. I felt sorry for some of them; I was intrigued by their story and had guessed the most significant thing about Enzo, the gardener, though not his whole story.
Millie appears to have come through ten years in prison with no street smarts, she comes across as very naïve, and you wouldn't guess her background from her actions. There is nothing to suggest why she has been in prison for most of the book, and her point of view is very diary-like. It reads much like, I cleaned the kitchen for three hours, I have no idea how they make so much mess and then I fantasised about Andy for a while before making dinner.
Nina is a highly complex character; she spins on a pinhead, it's like a rollercoaster ride, and as you get through the rest of the book, you will understand why. She is confused, disliked by those around her and seems quite unlikeable.
Cecelia is nine and a complete spoilt brat. Her words and actions towards Millie, in particular, are abhorrent but often mirror what she sees of her mother at her worst. Cecelia appears near the end of the book, and you are left wondering what happened to her. So much is made of her misbehaviour, but then it's completely gone and doesn't quite match up.
Andy is a very cleverly written man. Rich, handsome, well-dressed, high-powered job and a beautiful home. What more could you want in a husband?
Finally, there's Enzo, the gardener. He is strong and handsome but doesn't speak a word of English. He is at the house a considerable amount for a gardener though, and welcomes Millie with a sharp warning.
I liked the ending, though, again not as I expected but not terrible. This was a slightly strange read, I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened and where it would all end, but at the same time, I didn't feel anything from reading it, just indifferent. I wouldn't be likely to recommend it, but at the same time, I wouldn't say to someone not to read it either.
I would try one of the author's other novels. But unfortunately, this didn't connect with me the way I had hoped.
Overall, my ambivalence toward the book means that it sits around a three-star read for me.
This book reminded me of Behind Closed Doors x Verity x The Wife Between Us. My first McFadden book and it did not disappoint.
**Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
Holy mother of pearls did this book pack a 🥊 punch!!! 🫢 Revenge can be so sweet!!! I was completely invested in this story from the very beginning. There are so many twists to the storyline that you just have no idea what’s coming next!! I was screaming in delight over several parts of the book. The ending left me feeling so damn happy! 😂 I just didn’t see it coming. I recommend this amazing thriller to EVERYONE!!! 👏That 👏was👏 amazing!!👏
Millie is down on her luck and sleeping in her car having just been fired from her last job and losing her apartment when she finds herself sitting in Nina’s lounge being interviewed for the role of housekeeper. When she doesn’t hear anything from Nina, she assumes she has found out about her criminal record and has decided not to employ her, however a week later Nina calls her to offer her the job. Millie is delighted and accepts immediately and says she can start the following day. When she arrives at Nina’s grand house in Brooklyn to begin her employment, the gardener Enzo who can’t speak English tries to warn her but she dismisses him, and moves in to the attic room. Her husband Andy is very handsome and charming and she starts to fall for him. Their daughter Cece has no interest in Millie, and is rude towards her. Millie dismisses her actions to those of a spoilt brat.
As the weeks go by, Nina is very volatile, sometimes she’s lovely, and others she belittles Millie, accusing her of lying about things and asking her to do things then the next moment she denies that she asked her.
This confuses Milly, and one day whilst cleaning the bathroom in the master bedroom, she makes a discovery which may explain why Nina is acting this way.
I really enjoyed this book, I read it in one day! It was really cleverly written and the storyline was well executed! The twists throughout were very good and kept me interested to see what would happen next.
Thank you for letting me pre-read this book, I really enjoyed it!
