Not too bad of a book, however I could not warm up to Special agent Shannon...something about her rubs me the wrong way...

There are a lot of twists, however it did not exactly keep me up at night.

This is not a bad book - but it is just not my cup of tea !

I discovered TJ Brearton thanks to Netgalley.com and I'm so glad I did! I've now read all of her Shannon Ames books and am working my way thru the other ones. This book takes us on another crime ridden journey in DC with political intrigue to spare!

Complex thriller with much to unravel. Part of a series featuring Shannon Ames but ok as a standalone. Kept me interested but fell flat in parts.

It was really enjoyable. Although there are parts that I do not know since I started this one before starting the first book. So I was a bit lost and confused. Thank you for giving me a chance to read, I'll definitely start on the first book.

Not a bad read but bit too far fetched for me but I completed reading it, fell flat for me mid way through and never picked up after that x

A great addition to the series. I have read and enjoyed the previous books and this was no exception. Looking forward to reading more.

No Way Back is the fifth book in Brearton’s Shannon Ames FBI series. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar with this series, each book may be enjoyed as a standalone. No Way Back started off strong, but it fell flat for me halfway through. It took me a long time to finish this one. Although No Way Back isn't my favorite, it won’t stop me from checking out the others in this series. Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

A Tangled Web..
The fifth Shannon Ames thriller finds Shannon reassigned to the New York Field Office where she’s given the case of Kristie Fain. Fain is an aide to a US Senator and she’s been abducted. Shannon and her FBI team have a tangled web to unweave. Who is behind it all and can Shannon play by the rules she knows or risk it all to save a life? A well crafted thriller with a complex plot and a credible cast. A worthy addition to this series.

Great read. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in. Atmospheric, haunting and superbly plotted.

No Way Back – TJ Brearton

FBI Special Agent Shannon Ames has just transferred to the NY Office of the FBI, along with her most trusted colleagues, Charles Bufort & Jenna Reese. Shortly after team introductions are made, she is summoned to ADIC Tyler’s office, where they’re handed a priority case. A congressional aide to a NY State Senator has gone missing, after never making it home to DC from NY City.

Kristie Fain was walking from her boyfriend’s apartment to Penn station when she is grabbed by two men and tossed into a van. The only evidence that something is amiss is a text she sent to her roommate about being followed. As they start their investigation, a visit to the apartment she shares with her boyfriend Mateo, leaves them with more questions than answers, as he’s claiming to have just been assaulted by someone claiming to be police.

As they re-trace her schedule, they learn that she was involved in a big dollar fundraiser for the senator prior to her disappearance. A visit to the hotel where the event, took place creates a more perplexing problem as they learn that the business has suffered a ransomware attack, and all the video from that night is encrypted and inaccessible. Did something happen that night to provoke her kidnapping?

A visit to the Senator’s office yields little. The fundraiser was touted as a success, with nothing out of the ordinary happening. Likewise, her roommate in DC, Rachel, has nothing significant to add, other than the fact that Kristie was planning to break up with Mateo. Attempts to ping her phone show it’s last position, where it was presumably discarded. Camera footage from NYPD, and a bystander give them their first glimpse of Kristie’s kidnappers – and a renewed sense of dread for Shannon and her team.

As Shannon and her team frantically search for the identity of Kristie’s captors, the Senator has his own secret – one that might destroy his career - and Kristie’s life hangs in the balance…

This is my second Shannon Ames novel, and it will not be my last! She’s a strong, gutsy likeable character – and this is a thrilling who-dun-it that keeps you guessing, with an interesting look into the (fictional) gritty political world and its machinations, and the lengths some are willing to go, just to secure a vote.

A strong police procedural but some aspects of the plot were a bit beyond the realms of credibility which detracted a bit from the experience for me. I know it is fiction but the balance was a bit too tipped for me. Great characters and a fascinating story counter this criticism and it is the sort of book I recommend for people wanting a book to lose themselves in.

It was ok read. It was slow in the beginning where there is not a lot of action. There is no suspense , not a page turner and whole story lacks substance. The scene lacks description, so you not able to really submerse yourself within the story, each chapter reads as if it was an outline. I really was hoping for page turner, not putting the book down grasping for what is about to happen but it really wasn’t.

Honestly, this book is so fast paced from beginning to end, it's impossible not to finish it one sitting! Loved the plot and how gripping this story was for me. I enjoyed every bit of it! I couldn't get enough!

This book was given to me from NetGalley and the publishers to read/review plus give my personal opinions on this book. All statements above are my own and based solely on my own opinions after reading the book.

Political intrigue, kidnapping, a cult-like protest group, and a rogue FBI agent - all in one book!

Shannon Ames is a star FBI agent, with a little too much leeway to do things her way. So when she goes after a U. S. Senator, she gets a slap on the hand, but that doesn't stop her from pursuing justice in the case of his aide who was kidnapped off of a New York city street. No one is beyond suspicion including Fain's boyfriend, boss, political rivals, and even her boyfriend's father's enemies. Meanwhile the clock is ticking, and Shannon will do whatever it takes to find Kristie Fain and bring her to safety.

Note: This is part of a series. The book reads independent of the others, but it would be helpful to read the others for the backstories.

Thanks to NetGalley, Inkubator Books, and Booksprout for an advanced reader's copy.

No Way Back is the latest novel in the Shannon Ames FBI series. A part of the New York branch of the FBI now, Shannon and her team must work a kidnapping of a US senator’s aid. Red flags and misdirection are the words of the day as Shannon and her team take on a twisted case plagued by politics and a seemingly endless suspect pool. An action packed story that keeps you guessing until the author throws some big uh ohs into a page turning mystery. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

A bit far-fetched. No way an agent with less than 3 years in gets made defacto AIC. Plus going rogue and keeping her job?? Pull the other one Brearton. Unable to post to Goodreads because of site error: "Unable to find book with ISBN "9781915275295" on Goodreads.

SUPERB police procedural dealing with the dirty side of political scandals involving blackmail with the kidnapping of an innocent woman working as a political aide. No Way Back by T.J. Brearton
A Shannon Ames Thriller #5

Kidnapping, coercion, threats, and a great deal sleuthing takes place in this book. What happened to Katie Fain? Who took her and why? What motivated the kidnapping? Is she in danger and can she be found before she is grievously harmed or killed? Shannon and her new team are given the assignment of finding Katie and what a weighty task it proves to be!

What I liked:
* Shannon: FBI Special Agent, committed, conscientious, bright, focused, believes in what she does, team player, good with her team, has difficult decisions to make
* Shannon’s team: Bufort and Reese….saw more of Bufort this time.
* The politics…in the FBI and outside…not sure what to think of some of them
* Galloway: Impressed me more than Tyler and hope to see more of him in the future
* Eddie: retired policeman, working privately on the same case that Shannon has, a maverick and rather capable – liked him
* The writing and plot with its twists and turns
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* Seeing Cardoza again…wonder if that romantic door has been closed for good or could be opened again between him and Shannon
* That it seemed very realistic
* That I was invested in the story – had to read the end early on to find out what would happen to some of the characters
* The lead into book six and wondering what will happen next

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like – and I won’t name names as it might give things away
* Having to wait for the next book in the story

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC – this is my honest review.

5 Stars

No Way Back is the fifth book in the series with Special Agent Shannon Ames of the FBI. This can be a stand alone but it is probably best to have read the previous to have all the back history.

The story begins with Kristie Fain, an aid to Senator Nickerson, walking to catch a train in New York and is abducted off the street. Her roommate has reported her missing, the boyfriend has been beaten up and is not talking. Shannon Ames and her team are assigned the case. Shannon with her team starts to investigate the Senator and those close to him. He presents a video that was sent to him blackmailing him to vote yes on a piece of legislation that he is against. There are plenty of leads and mis directions to follow. In this day and age of technology it is easy to believe this story could be true.

I enjoy all of TJ Brearton books, they hold your interest until the end. I highly recommend this book. It is an explosive story that takes you for a thrilling ride.
