I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of No Way Back, the fifth novel to feature Special Agent Shannon Ames of the FBI’s New York field office.
Kristie Fain is snatched from a New York street and because she is on Senator Nickerson’s staff Shannon and her team are given the investigation. It is soon obvious that the Senator and his staff are being economical with the truth as is Kristie’s boyfriend. Then there’s the fake policeman who’s handy with his fists, what does he want?
I thoroughly enjoyed No Way Back, which is a tense thriller full of twists and turns. It has a bit of everything, but mostly it is a 21st century novel in its concerns and technology. I freely admit to being a modern technology free zone (I can work my phone and computer but don’t ask me to do anything fancy) so I was amazed at how easy it was to understand the tech involved and how interesting the use it was put to.
The novel is mostly told from Shannon’s point of view, with the occasional switch to Kristie’s ordeal, which isn’t strictly necessary, but is inserted, I assume, to ratchet up the tension in Shannon’s hunt for her and highlight the lengths some people will go to to achieve their aims. I like Shannon. She is smart, gutsy and task orientated and in this novel all these characteristics are on show in this novel. If that were not enough she has a torrid time with politics and self preservation (not her’s) getting in the way of her investigation and threatening her career. So what does she do? Carries on regardless. Go girl.
The plot has a hint of the conspiracy theory about it, although I can’t say which one without spoilers. The trouble is I have absolutely no problem believing it could be true and wouldn’t be surprised if something similar, without the extravagances, hasn’t happened before. Still, the extravagances make for a very readable and exciting thriller.
No Way Back is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Like always by this author, this is an entertaining and easy to read book with great characters. A problem here, is that the main character suddenly is stupid, and I'm not talking about the rogue behavior, but what led to it, among other things.
