This is a great spooky read for the fall season and I really enjoyed the twists and turns that you didn't see coming and the mystery was good as well. It was a gothic horror within a creepy haunted house vibe and man just really creepy. Poor Helen doesn't know what she is getting into trying to stay at the house for the year to inherit everything and every time she figures something out it just keeps getting more intense. I came into it not even remembering what the book was about and I think the less you know the better it makes the reading experience.
Thanks to Viking Book for Young Readers and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book in e-book form. All opinions in this review are my own.

A great blend of mystery and horror. At times could have used some more build up, but the atmosphere was delightfully spun in shadows and mystique.

If you liked The House of Hollows, Go Hunt Me, or The Honeys then I believe that you will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed the twists and turns that this book takes especially as you get close to the ending of this story. I like that the beginning takes a while to build up the story and introduce different people to you. I loved the way the action picks up in this story and how the scary scenes play out over the course of the book. There are moments in the end in which confuse me so I will have to re-read but its one that is worth another read through to keep track of the smaller plot aspects that build the story up.

I was amazed once again with the mystery and intrigue of this deeply crazy family and all the goings on related to the house hat ties them together. What a wild and wonderful read.

Excellent, atmospheric read with a brilliant twist! I always enjoy Kate Alice Marshall's books, and this was no exception. Highly recommended.

DNF. This book is not for me. There’s so many characters to keep track of. Im honestly so confused. Im also not finding it scary at all, if anything it’s very cheesy.

Thank you PenguinTeen for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Kate Alice Marshall will always be one of my go to authors. I love her writing style and enjoy her books so much.
This Gothic book is about a teen girl who inherits a mansion of an estranged grandfather. But of course a stipulation is in place in order for her to keep the house. For a year she must stay and be accepted by the home, but something is lurking in the shadows. A haunting past is discovered and creepy things begin to happen.

I absolutely love a good horror/thriller and this book did not disappoint. The pace of this book was perfect and always kept me wanting to know more. I loved each character and their complexity and the lessons this book was trying to convey.

Definitely atmospheric! This would be a great spooky fall read. While some of the secrets revealed went over my head, the overall plot was very interesting. I do wish we had more build up to the mystery so that the time jumps did not feel like they simply happened because the book needed to happen over the course of a year. They could've been utilized to give reader more clues to the mystery, especially if they were misleading ones.

What a creepy and horrifying tale. I devoured it and could not put it down! The story of Helen and her family and how they sustained centuries of deadly traditions is a page turner.

I absolutely love Kate Alice Marshall. I read her first book and was blown away. This story did not disappoint.

I love how creepy and twisted this one was! There’s also a little mystery aspect to it, which keeps the pace moving nicely. I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved how atmospheric this book was, too. I read it for Horror October and it was the perfect vibe for Halloween! The Harrow house and the things that happened in it were super creepy!
I wish I had connected to the characters better, though. I loved Bryony the Harrow Witch, but other than that I didn’t really have feelings for anyone either way, including the main character. I never felt any chemistry in the romance, either, despite the fact that I was super intrigued by Bryony. I lacked the emotion for the story overall that would have earned this book a higher rating from me.
I did love the ending, though! What a nice twist!

Kate Alice Marshall has done a wonderful job suspending reality in this supernatural thriller. The main character, Helen, has several mysteries to uncover to make sense of her family history. Prior to being called to her relative’s funeral, she was unaware of their existence. The complexities of character and plot add to the suspense in a tangible way. Surprise abounds and the book is definitely worth the ride, but not for the feint hearted.

I went into this blind and it knocked my socks off! This isn’t your ordinary YA thriller! It is gothic horror, creepy haunted house, and disturbingly disoriented all wrapped up in one crazy ride!
I loved how the house was alive and felt like an additional character in the story. Filled with disturbing creepy themes, this is not a light book. Including how heritage effects our lives for the good or in this case bad, was a great spin.

This was a great read for spooky season! It kept me entertained throughout and I think it is a great YA book. I'll definitely be looking for more by this author.

This was an intense, intriguing suspense, YA mystery/thriller gothic story. It kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages until the end. I didn't want to stop reading until I knew the answers and what was happening. The twist in this was major and unexpected. This was a very unusual twist and point of view compared to most stories I've read. It's something that I keep wondering about now and trying to wrap my head around it.
It was a great read for the fall, with the haunted house vibes and the mystery. The atmosphere and setting are perfect, and I loved how the house was alive and like a character in the story.
I've never read anything by Kate Alice Marshall before, but am interested to check out more by her now. This has a lot of mystery and twists and turns in it that make for a great story. Also, I would say there should be a content/trigger warning for a few things like blood/blood magic, lobotomy, murder, child death/sacrifice, abuse, misogyny, experimentation, and such.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Penguin Group Penguin Young Readers Group/Viking Books for Young Readers for letting me read and review this fascinating suspenseful and haunting mystery. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I adored this spooky, Gothic thriller. Helen's character was fascinating, but I thought that the story line fell a little flat in the middle.
I believe if the fast pace would have been been constant throughout the narrative, I would have been pulled in more and likes the other characters.

Let me start off by saying this cover is super creepy and I instantly knew I wanted to read this one based off the synopsis.
This is my second read from Kate Alice Marshall, and this one was beyond better and my favorite. It had such an eerie and spooky atmosphere that sent shivers and chills. The haunting Gothic atmospheric setting makes this story worth the read.
I would highly recommend going into it not knowing much. That’s what I did and trust me, it’ll be worth the read.
Normally, I don’t get scared with YA books, but I felt like this one definitely had some twists and scares that actually made me enjoy this even more.
This book has it all: spooky setting, untrustworthy family, paranormal elements, creepy gothic vibes, secrets, murder, a terrifying haunted house, and a curse.
The twist was super surprising. I didn’t see it coming at all and I felt so surprised. It kept my attention from very early on and the characters just had me reading as fast as I could. I really enjoyed the overall plot and feel like I would definitely pick up more from this author in the future. Super creepy story!! Would definitely recommend it!

This book was perfect for October, and it gives great Haunting of Hill House vibes as well as the labyrinth feeling of House of Leaves (although much more palatable in my opinion).
We follow Helen Vaughn, and immediately she lets us know that she's a liar, or unreliable narrator. Helen was hidden from her mother's side of the family until her grandfather passes away and her mom, Rachel, feels she needs to go back home for the funeral. Of course, during this visit, things start to get weird. We find out that in order for any of the Vaughn family to keep any of the inheritance, Helen must agree to stay on the estate for a year. She agrees if only for her mom.
The cast of characters were fun if not a bit campy. We have the over the top villain and the rich and looking down at you matriarch of the family. We have the the friendly cousins as well as the sapphic romance.
The spooky vibes were right on point and I loved that there are no ghosts at Harrow - this made for a fun and new way to play into creepy that I felt was so original how it was done. I loved that we have a sapphic relationship in the lead here, although I did fine the build to the romance a little off for what the story was.
I wanted more of the mother daughter relationship, and felt this was the strongest part that I would've loved to see throughout the novel instead of taking a back seat in the middle of the story. I felt it was the strongest connection between characters and I wanted more focus there.
Overall, a fun YA spooky story perfect for fans of Gallant and similar stories.

Unfortunately, this is my least favorite of Kate Alice Marshall's most recent horror releases. I wish I had been more engaged, but something about this particular character/storyline didn't grip me like usual.
