This creepy story is very much like it’s tagline says, it’s definitely reminiscent to Haunting of Hill House. While the dark and strange house of Harrow holds secrets and supernatural elements, it’s an overall very depressing story with entirely unlikable characters. The story kept me captivated in it’s telling but was a bit cliché. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Helen has had no contact with her extended family and hasn’t been near Harrowstone Hall, the family home, in years. So, it’s a shock when her grandfather dies leaving everything, including the once grand home to HER. In order to claim the inheritance, she must live at Harrow for one year. Now, the dreams that once plagued her sleep chase her through daylight and she will have to uncover the many secrets of the house that seems to want her gone. Shades of the Winchester House and Jackson’s Hill House haunt the pages of this creepy YA thriller

The Haunting of Hill House meets Knives Out with a pinch of Rebecca in this horror tale that may kill you.

I love stories about victorian houses with a spooky past. I think of the Amityville Horror, the Winchester house, and we can't forget about Manderley. Where the house infiltrates your dreams and reality. I get chills just thinking about it.

Reading this book was a no-brainer for me. It contained lots of things I love about a good spooky read that'll make your hair stand up. Here's the thing, I've tried reading this multiple times and I just couldn't get into it. It hurts to say this because I really enjoy books written by KAM. She has a special niche when it comes to horror. KAM knows just the right moments to get under your skin and scare you. So it really saddens me that I couldn't find anything to attach to while reading this.

The cover is spectacular. It stands out and it's one I would have picked up at the book store from the cover alone. I think other readers will do that as well. It's certainly one that I'm going to purchase for the library and I can see readers of these kinds of books loving it. It just wasn't for me.

These Fleeting Shadows wasn't the book for me like I thought it was going to be. I suggest reading her books because they are really good. This one just didn't do it for me.

This book reminds me of Knives Out. A nasty fight for inheritance leads to a Interesting thriller which is incredibly fun to read. I was quickly lost in the plot and couldn’t wait to find out what happened.

The reader is led on a winding road to reach the answer but at times the reader is unsure of what is happening. This is mixed against a budding romance between two young women exploring who they are and what their role in the mystery is. Add on a mysterious illness, some occult, some magic, and lots of money as the motivation for Helen to make it to the end and you have a story many will find interesting,

This was advertised as "The Haunting of Hill House meets Knives Out" and I'd have to say that this was much more The Haunting of Hill House than the latter. There were a lot of supernatural elements, where I was more expecting mystery.

Of course, the idea for this story is that teenage Helen's rich, but estranged grandfather wills her his money and the family estate, Harrowstone Hall, IF she can live there for a year. Otherwise she gets nothing and neither does anyone else. Helen and her mother hadn't been to the estate in years and hadn't spoken to family in that time, so she's not quite sure why she was chosen as the new master of Harrow, as they call it.

I found this book to be dark and strange. At times, it was tough to turn the pages because I wasn't sure how much more I could take. I didn't find any of the characters to be likeable or well-rounded, so trudging through this book was difficult because it seemed to go on forever.

Helen Vaughan isnt like normal people she believes that something is wrong with herself. She finds herself as Mistress of the family estate after her grandfather dies and leaves the house to her. No one is happy about the situation but Helen is to stay on the grounds for a year to see if the house will accept her. She finds friends with the Harrow Witch and some cousins. She discovers dark secrets about the family and herself. She also discovers that monsters don’t always look like monsters.

This is a wonderful spooky story. I loved how the story unfolds as Helen uncovers the secrets buried under Harrow Hall.

Mildly obsessed with this book. This story was dark and full of twists and turns and mystery. It was an easy page turner for me, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next.

This book gave so many twists and turns and I myself didn’t know who to trust and believe. The most innocent character is usually the one you can’t trust, it turned out everyone was lying, including the main character, Helen. This book was also the perfect amount of creepy and mysterious. The only thing I didn’t love was that it took a while for the momentum to pick up, I wish that would’ve came sooner.

I was excited to read These Fleeting Shadows and the first few chapters reeled me in quickly with the blend of Hill House/Knives Out and a very different brand of horror. Quickly though the book started to lose me even though I latched onto Helen I began to dislike the pace of the book as well as the supporting characters. I felt that the setting was also underused and I thought it would be like The Overlook Hotel from The Shining and I felt that it was more a house instead of a haunted house.

The biggest strength I can give Kate Alice Marshall is her characters and I loved Helen but I felt that some of the extended family were either underused or not needed. I enjoyed Desmond and Celia and really like Bryony as her confidants and I wished she spent more time with them.

Overall I did not hate or love These Fleeting Shadows and I recommend this book for YA readers who are looking for something spooky, but not scary

Had I written this book, there are a number of things I would have done differently. I would have preferred a slow burn leading up to the horror stuff. It was easy to lose track of the characters' ages (didn't really read like ya). The house itself, while central to the plot in some ways, was difficult to conceive of. But the thing is: Had I written any kind of book, it would absolutely be one just like this.

Kate Alice Marshall has done it again. Every book she writes is a masterpiece. Always creepy. Always intriguing. Always with a hook to keep you wanting more. “These Fleeting Shadows” is no different. It was beautifully written.

There are no words! It was creepy and gave me nightmares but I still cried for the love of Helen and Byrony at the end. The love of Rachel and her daughter. Holy wow! The feelings. The evil. The things done in the name of what is "right" or "tradition". And to go back to Rules for Vanishing and realize that Harrowstone is the house from the ghost road with the lady with the candle and chiming bell!! HOLY COW! The way she weaves her stories together is magical. What a fantastic premise. What a beautifully crafted story! The twists. The reveals. The beauty of Helen. The trust and love that her cousins/friends have for her. I am speechless. What a phenomenal book. Now I have to suffer and wait for it to release so I can talk about it with everyone else who falls in love with it.

I have very mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, I thought it was much better than Marshall's last book. On the other hand, this one had a huge chunk of the book that dragged. This caused me to start to greatly lose interest in the mystery. It was inspired by a short story, and part of me thinks that this too would have worked better as a short story as well.

I really enjoyed Bryony, she was far and away the best and most interesting character and i kept reading at one point solely for her. Super appreciated the adorable sapphic romance present here.
The answer to the mystery, i definitely did not see it coming. I had some vague ideas about what happened and definitely suspected uncle caleb, but was not expecting the revelations surround our main character.

I thought the ending was great, and very satisfying, but that part in the middle that stalled the book really colored my experience. So this is around 3.5 for me but i will round up!

Kate Alice Marshall has yet to disappoint me and These Fleeting Shadows is my favorite book of hers yet.

All of her books are so unique, but this one threw me for a loop. It was easily the wildest and most imaginative book she’s written so far.

The story was dark and beautiful and full of twisting mysteries.

Kate Alice Marshall has such a uniquely creative imagination! I have read all her books and These Fleeting Shadows is certainly my favorite so far! These Fleeting Shadows is a spiral of a storyline with twists and turns all throughout the book. There's this sense of horror that meets mystery that leaves the reader engaged and intrigued. It's dubbed as The Haunting of Hill House meets Knives Out and I'd say it describes this book perfectly plus an odd little twist! I loved Harrow House, the creepy descriptions of it and the Harrow Witch herself was pretty cool. The history behind the family and the story was also a really cool concept I enjoyed. The ending started to get a bit weird but I still think it worked with the story. Overall this was a true horror story and I think readers will love it!
