Thank you, Simon and Schuster Canada, and netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I know this is a very late review because the book has been out for almost a year already. I ended up listening to the audiobook. I had no idea what this book was about before starting. I didn't know there was a mystery and sci-fi elements in this book. Sci-fi isn't really my thing but I've been expanding into different genres lately. At about 80% I got a little lost and not quite grasping what was happening.
Did I enjoy listening to it? Yes
Did I understand most of it? Ya, for the most part.
The plot was interesting and I found this book well written. There are so many wonderful reviews on this book so I was excited to read it. I definitely recommend this one.
I was so excited when I was approved for this arc - Thank you @netgalley! The synopsis intrigued me and the note from the publisher that expressed the importance of secrecy regarding the twist of this book excited me!
Unfortunately, that's where the excitement ended. Once reading, this book was very dry and slow. None of the characters were particularly likeable which only made it that much harder to connect to the story. It felt like a real grind.
When we come to the twist, I won't give anything away but let's just say the book took a steep nose dive at this point. Some may enjoy it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea and wasn't what I was expecting.
Overall, this book left me feeling unsatisfied and bored.
Huge props to THE OTHER SIDE OF NIGHT for getting me out of my reading slump!
I will avoid spoilers as much as I can because you really need to go into this one blind. It's a basic murder mystery for about 70% and then the puzzle pieces begin to quickly come together (get ready to be blown away!) I read this in one day because I honestly just couldn't put it down. (I was also just dying to figure out what everyone was hinting at in their reviews.)
Highly recommended for fans of fantastical, mystery fiction.
Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for my #arc!
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review The Other Side of Night.
The Other Side of Night was an experience I wasn’t prepared for. It introduced some great elements from thrillers and science fiction and combined them in a seamless way. I wanted to end of the novel to drag a bit slower for pacing and immersion, but there was nothing wrong with the elements and how they were used.

What would you sacrifice for love?
What would you give for just one more moment with someone who meant everything?
A twisty, confusing and absolutely intriguing look at love and loss, narrated by Dr David Asha, supplemented with the journals, writings and diaries of other characters, including the fascinating former police officer Harriet (Harri) Kealty.
As David dangles snippets of mystery surrounding the fate, yet to be unfolded, of his son, Elliot Asha, we know little directly from what he can tell us, yet feel in our hearts the rumble of Elliot’s upcoming destruction and subsequent redemption.
At ten years old, at our story’s onset, Elliot, with his brown hair and sad, striking blue eyes, is “troubled, withdrawn, and suspicious”, and our task, as the story convolutes around him, is to figure out why.
A book brimming with secrets, featuring a plot as far from linear and straightforward as a readers mind can imagine, it will take a stellar struggle (and a dedicated reader) to figure this one out.
As Harri soon finds herself the self-appointed protector of Elliot, her task is further complicated by the elusive Ben Elmys - he of the polished amber eyes and tousled brown hair (and a surprisingly profound connection to her heart). It is not at all clear if this “gentle, kind, calm, charming and funny” man, guardian to Elliot and family friend of the Ashas, is at all who he appears to be.
A fun and definitely puzzling read - this readers search for answers revealed them slowly, but steadily, until the clever and satisfying ending (which is a real corker) that I did (mostly) manage to put together.
Highly recommended, this book is a world of mystery and enigmas, populated with damaged and vulnerable seekers, each chasing answers to life’s (and love’s) greatest riddles - unable to let go, regardless of the final and terrible cost.
A great big thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
I found this novel somewhat confusing but intriguing. There is a novelist, David, a disgraced police officer, Harri, a child, Elliot, and Elliot’s guardian, Ben. The story is told from various narrators using, diary entries, police reports, and video clips. Some of the novel occurs in the future, thanks to physics. I’m not sure if it’s an odd mystery or science fiction. Definitely interesting.
Thank you to NetGalley, Adam Hamdy and Simon & Schuster Canada for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
This one was totally different than I had imagined, but I think that’s why I enjoyed it. I really had no idea where this was going at all and yet I was loving being along for the ride. The twist is very surprising and I’m shocked that I like it! The writing is just so unique and I can’t wait to read more.
This is one of those books that you are better to go into it blind. I really can’t say much about it, because even saying a little would ruin the experience I think.
…seeing other people say the same made me immediately bump it up my TBR. I learned something about myself as a reader from that - if someone says “I can’t tell you anything about this book” - it means I NEED to know what that means IMMEDIATELY and have to read it. Do you have the same FOMO?
Anyways….back to the book.
I shouldn’t have liked this. If you read it and if you know my tastes, you’ll get that.
But somehow it just worked for me. It’s enthralling, intriguing …and as a friend described it - “it’s quiet” and I can’t think of a more perfect word to describe its uniqueness.
Definitely one of a kind and I think one worth checking out!
2.5/5 Stars
David Asha is a writer, who believes his biggest regret is leaving his young son, Elliot. David is presumed dead after the loss of his wife, Beth to cancer. Elliot is taken into the care of his pseudo-uncle, Ben. Meanwhile, a police officer named Harriet is put on leave after being accused of killing a man. She buys a used book and finds a troubling inscription in the margins that causes her to launch an investigation into her old lover, Ben.
This was an interesting, complex read, the only reason I gave it a lower rating was because I found the pacing to be so incredibly slow. I think the ending was really well done, when we finally got there. Everything came together in a cohesive and intriguing way, I was just bored getting there. I continued reading because I did want the answers in the end. It is definitely a thought provoking book, about what you would sacrifice to save the one's you love.
I think a lot of people would really love this book, so please don't take my lower rating as a sign not to pick it up... it just wasn't for me.
It is so hard to say anything about this book without giving spoilers away. Even placing it in a genre is a spoiler. So, I won't talk about the story so much as my feelings while reading it. To start off I was incredibly confused. Part of that may be because I was reading on my kobo, so I couldn't just flip back and recheck things, but it was also a little disjointed in the beginning, or so it seemed. The more I kept going though, the more curious I got. What was going on in this book? What are all these secrets? Why is he acting this way? I had so many questions. Finally, we arrived at the end and a part of me was unsure of how to feel. So, I let it process. And the more I thought about the book and the twists and the ending, the more I fell in love with it. This is definitely a book I can see myself reading again and would recommend to others. It's a bit of a love story, unlike any I've ever read before, and maybe that's why it's tugged at my heartstrings so much. If you like surprises and are ok going into a book that might confuse you greatly, then I highly recommend checking out The Other Side of Night.
Huge thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada for gifting me the e-arc copy to read. All thoughts are my own.
Thanks to Simon and Schuster Canada for this advance reading copy for this novel. This was okay. I did not like the writing or the flow of it but as I kept reading it was still just okay. I was very close to DNF'ing this book as it was just not the best.
Going into a book completely blind can only go 2 ways: either you end up loving it, or you end up DNF’ing it.😅 When I started reading this book, I swear I couldn’t figure out what’s going on! I was hoping it’ll be a slowburn psychological thriller or atleast a paranormal mystery. Even halfway in, I was still unsure where the story was leading. But it’s so intriguing that my curiosity’s piqued - I honestly couldn’t put the book down. The writing’s so captivating it made me want to find out what’s going on so badly! And boy, after finishing the book, I was NOT disappointed! I ended up loving the book! It’s a bit weird, and not my usual type of read, but the raw emotions of each character resonated with me. I felt the disappointment of Harri and the profound grief of Elliott… I even found Ben to be enigmatic! So even if the finale’s weird for me, just to be clear, it is a good kind of weird. The kind that I can accept because everything tied up nicely and offered an explanation that is entirely plausible even in my skeptic mind. I definitely would recommend this for any bookworm wanting to read something different. Adam Hamdy is a new-to-me author and after reading this novel, I think I need to check out his other works. Thanks to @simonschusterca for my gifted galley and for introducing me to this great author. The Other Side of Night is now available. 💗
My rating: 🔖🔖🔖🔖.5/5
Thank you Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. 5 stars of a DNF as I cannot comment on the overall quality of the book. I'll keep it short and sweet, this simply was NOT for me.
Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me as I really didn’t enjoy the author’s style and storytelling. I was bored from the start and had to finally give up
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of The Other Side of the Night!
I thought this book was going to be a murder mystery that was solved by the disgraced police officer, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. I really enjoyed this book even though it wasn’t what I was expecting. You really cant talk too much about this book without giving away the twist.
First l want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for my eARC in exchange for my honest review. “Sitting here, on the other side of midnight, I owe everything, good and bad, to my son, the boy who kept his promise.” This sums up a novel filled with sadness, strength, and strong characters, set on a course of life’s unchanging experiences. We follow the sad life of Elliot, and the equally emotional Harri. Well worth getting to the end.
This one is hard to review. Mostly as the publisher asked that we keep the twist a secret. This is a slow burn & cerebral read that will require readers a fair helping of “stickwithitness.” Unfortunately I fear many will not which is a pity as the writing is good. The permis is weighed down by the heaviness of the work as was the commitment to wait until about 80% in for The reveal. I was a bit lost and I wasn’t able to “go with” the narration.
My thanks to the publishers and authors for my digital arc.
Hamdy was born in the UK but now lives in Mauritius. He is a successful author of many books including 'The Pendulum Trilogy' and the 'Scott Pearce' series. This new release is a crime fiction novel with a unique twist. The book is written as a that of a book written by a father as a tribute to his son who he has been separated from for years. We meet Harri, a former cop who finds an eerie note in a library book and is intrigued enough to follow up on it. The note leads her to a man she thought she loved who broke up with her suddenly and who she now thinks may have been actually evil. This is story unlike most and is a great recommendation for readers willing to try something different. I really enjoyed it.
I will admit that I was mostly confused for the first half of the book. I was intrigued by it all but wasn’t sure how it was going to end up in the end. It was lyrical and yet something kept me from being completely immersed . And I don’t think I can say too much (literally at all) or it’ll give it away so I’ll just say it was a Very unique read and perhaps one I may change my rating about since I’m still thinking about it.
3.5 ⭐️ veryyyy interested in how others read this so I’ll be watching bookstagram for reviews.
