The audiobook quality was enjoyable and I really liked the narrator. Single narrator for all voices.
Okay this book is YA and the main character is every bit of the 19 year old she is. Because she acts like it. A little whiny, a ton impulsive, and quite emotional (but understandable so I'll let that one slide).
The beginning started out with a bang, it slowed towards the middle and I really was not sure where the plot was going or what the point was? The end had some more action and ended with a kind of cliffhanger? I just was not sure what the actual driving plot was after the beginning. This very easily could end up being one female with 3 males interested in her and another female pining for another. It is urban fantasy dealing with fae, Native American legends and a whiny teenager caught up in the middle. I think it might be my age because I find almost all young adult female leads whiny so this is not unique to her. The use of a Native American legends was a really cool twist to a fae story and I really liked that aspect. I am curious about the rest of the series and would continue reading. I am very curious as to who Catori will ultimately end up with.
3.5./4 out of 5 stars. A great young adult series and an enjoyable audiobook.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the audiobook for an honest review.
I did not enjoy Rose Petal Graves. The synopsis made it sound like it would be an adult/new adult fantasy and the story felt very YA. I did like that the narrator was animated and sarcastic as the text seemed to be written that way, but it did add to the maturity level of the main character. I only got about 30% through this audiobook and ended up realizing this just wasn’t for me. I would definitely recommend to fans of YA, who aren’t looking for the main character to make super logical decisions or be on their own.
I’m gonna be a little harsh here but I really didn’t like this book. It was hard to come up with positive things about this book because the whole thing was so cringey. I couldn’t tell you the plot because I’m not sure there really was one.
The good:
-I liked Ace as a character, I couldn’t figure out if he was bad, morally gray, or just sarcastic. He was pretty much the only part of the book that I did like.
-I liked the audiobook narrator and I think she did a great job creating different character voices.
The not so good:
-The book started pretty good with a conflict introduced, but more conflicts kept adding up with none of them ever solved. It felt like the book just kept going in circles. The pace was also slow and it just felt super repetitive.
-None of the characters were very likeable (except Ace) and I wasn’t invested in what happened to them. The main character is especially annoying. First of all, she made some straight up DUMB decisions. She turns out to be half fae, half human and LITERALLY gets the word “human” tattooed on the back of her hand so she won’t be tempted by her fae side. WHO WOULD EVER DO THAT?!
-Trigger warning here for su!cide, but I hate that Blake committed su!cide and multiple people blamed it on Cat just because she didn’t love him back in a romantic way. That is SO $hitty and not right. And it wasn’t ever addressed that it was absolutely NOT her fault.
I definitely would’ve DNF-ed this book if I wasn’t reading it to review. It made me mad and I didn’t enjoy it at all.
I really enjoyed this series starter. This book opens with tragedy and all the mystery unfolds from there. A fun read but some parts of the book, the pacing feels off. A book that feels more YA than new adult.
You delve into the world of native American heritage, faeries, time travel, grief, mystery, and old lives. So win/win in my book. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This was a fantastic book full of magic, surprises and interesting characters. I listened to the audiobook version and felt so immersed in the story and able to imagine what was happening and who the characters were. I wish the book had lasted longer because I was enjoying it so much, but I’m glad to hear it’s the first book in a new series.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author, for a chance to read and review this book.
Ok so I liked the premise of this book and I think that this was a decent first book of the series/trilogy. The MC deals with her mothers death, but that seems to be just the beginning of the problems she's about to face. She's then introduced to Faeries and Fae hunters and learns about the role that she has to play among them. Although I found the MC likeable, she did have her moments.
There were a number of love interests in this book. The handsome but engaged medical examiner who happens to be Fae, the best friend and then the Fae hunter Kajika. Admittedly I didn't really care for any of them. It was also a bit hard to keep track of who was who and what side they fell on. There were some areas I was confused on. Namely, how is the MC in med school when she's 19? Also, if a snow storm meant that medical examiner had to stay with her then how did her family manage to arrive the next day? I'm not a fan of instalove so that was a nope for me.
I enjoyed the narrator telling this story and like I said I do think this could have the potential to be a good series, I just think this book needed a bit more fleshing out.
This book has a really interesting premise. I enjoy the mix of Fae and Native American culture. It's an interesting mix of folklore and fantasy. I didn't realise going into this audiobook that it was the start of a series and I'm not sure if I will continue but have enjoyed book 1. It is slow paced which does give you the opportunity to get to know the characters well, but for me the pace was too slow. Not a great deal happened but you are given a lot of information about the Fae and the hunters culture.
If you enjoy a fantasy set in present day then you will enjoy this book. The town it is set in has a small town, everyone knows everyone vibe so there are few key players which keeps the story easy to follow. It's single POV which for me makes it a lot more enjoyable. I do think it could also go with a glossary just to keep note of all the different words/languages.
Please take my rating with a grain of salt. Since I very recently suffered a loss myself, it probably wasn’t the best idea to read this book when I did. All the talk about dying and grief wasn’t the greatest for me and thus it took me quite a while to finish this book.
What I will say, though, is that this book reads like a typical first installment of a fantasy series in that it focuses more on world-building than actual plot, which is fine, but I would have wished for more to be happening, regardless. Ultimately, neither the story nor the characters were able to properly intrigue me and thus I don’t think I will be continuing with the series.
I DNF’d this at around 15% as I wasn’t at all drawn in by the plot or the characters though the narrator did a good job.
Catori has returned to her hometown after her mother's unexpected death after digging up a grave full of only rose petals. The opening of this grave has brought handsome strangers to her hometown and renewed a long time war between the Fae and the Fae-Hunters. Now Catori must choose which side she will be part up while trying not to lose anyone else important in her life.
This story was OK, it kept my interest enough but some of the magic concepts were mediocre at best. Unsure if I will pick up book two when it comes out. I would give this book 2.5 stars. Right in the middle.
I hate to leave negative feedback but this book just wasn’t for me. I like The Vampire Diaries so I was hoping I would like this too.
I had a hard time remembering the characters, I couldn’t get attached to them.
Some of the writing was cliche and I don’t really get the point of the story. Unfortunately, the ending left me unsatisfied.
I did enjoy the narrator.
I hope others will enjoy this book.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this audiobook.
Rose Petal Graves, the first book of The Lost Clan series is an interesting book because it many ways it was set to be one of my favorites but didn't quite make it to the top.
The background story of this book is really amazing, a young woman finds out that her mother, prior to dying started to look into their heritage and discovers that her ancestors were a part of a native American tribe [fictional] that was said to have mystical powers. Through this she goes through a journey of discovering that fairies, faes and fae hunters are in fact real and surrounding us in our everyday life. Of course, there are multiple love interests that come into the story, including jealousy, betrayal, enemies to lovers all of the other tropes a reader wants in reading a novel such as this one. However, I was very disappointed in the dialogue between characters. Often it felt like the narration was so much better than what the characters actually said to each other that it made me wonder if two different people wrote each section. This made it really difficult to fall into any of the love interests in a way in which I would have liked given the main setting that the author set up for us. I have to give this book 3.25 stars because I feel like there was a bit of a missed opportunity with this book. I want to keep reading to see if it gets better simply because I did fall in love with the idea of this series and would love for it to continue with an improvement in the dialogue or even as the same book from a different POV to get a little more out of the characters that we did not have privy to from the perspective of Catori.
Finally, since this was an audiobook version, I do want to comment that I really loved the reader of this book and would love to hear more audiobooks from her. Will be looking out for her name as a narrator in the future.
I received a free Audiobook from the publisher through Netgally in exchange for my honest review.
Before I started this book I read quite a few critical reviews; so I went into it not sure if with pretty low expectations: I was pleasantly surprised. Nothing felt illogical, there wasn't insta love (insta attraction yes, insta love no) This was actually an extremely enjoyable read for me I finished quickly and will definitely be investing in the rest of the series.
Catori "Cat" Price is 19 years old in her first year of college in Boston working on fulfilling her dream to becoming a doctor. When her mother unexpectedly dies from a "heart attack" she travels back home to the small town of Rowan. She immediately doesn't believe it was a heart attack that killed her mother, after all she was only 44 and extremely healthy. But as she dives into finding out the truth she uncovers way more than she'd ever imagined she would. Struggling between two different sides of the same unbelievable story it's hard to figure out who is a friend and who is a foe. She finds herself in the middle of a feud dating back over 200 years, and all she really wants is to protect the people she loves.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the narration for the audio book was superb! I'd recommend to anyone who enjoys a contemporary fantasy that involves mythical creatures living among us.
Interesting book that involves the supernatural and Native Americans. I enjoyed this book, although some aspects did bother me. *SPOILERS* Why did the author bring the character Blake in, make us fall in love with his love sick heart to only have him commit suicide. For real!? He survived a bomb with half his face missing, he's a hero, and you did him the dirty of suicide. Tory's refusal to take sides was frustrating. Like seriously, they have all lied to you, killed your loved ones AND threatened to kill more. Stop getting pushed around and kick some damn ass! Plus, going through your mom's clothes to get rid of them like 2 weeks after her death is hella weird. Especially if they still smelled like her, I'd keep them forever.
I really enjoyed this book! I really liked the Native American rep and stories built into this world. It really made everything sound well rounded and really interesting.
My main issue was the ending that didn’t feel like an ending. I feel like it stopped too abruptly. I know there is more in this series but still. It was just not wrapped up at all and there also wasn’t a set cliffhanger. It just ended? I dunno. I didn’t love that.
Very much enjoyed this audio. The character and world building is on point. The narrator did a good job bringing them to life.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the author and/or publisher for providing me with a free copy of Rose Petal Graves by Olivia Wildenstein in exchange for an honest review. All of the following opinions are all my own.
Disclaimer: This is mainly a review for the audiobook and I think the narrator is what made me dislike the story so much.
2.75/5 Stars
The story had a decent premise. The cover is what interested me. This with the fact that the story contains Fae is always a plus for me. I went in prepared to love this novel which I "read" as an audiobook. My heart dropped the moment I began it. The narrator was super monotone and used childish voices for speaking parts. I wanted to stop so badly and just go read the ebook. If I'm honest, I did at about 20%... I couldn't take the audiobook anymore.
I was a little thrown off by the storyline. Cat lives in a cemetery where her ancestors are buried. A casket gets dug up and it's full of rose-petals versus bones. Somehow, Cat gets thrown into the world of fae and attempts to solve the mystery surrounding her mother's death. Her ancestor's turn out to be fae hunters. There is also the token brooding fae versus the other "guy". It was reminiscent of Fortuna Sworn which actually came out after this in 2019. I was a bigger fan of Fortuna Sworn which had an equally bad narrarator with an irritating voice versus a montone one. I did like Fortuna Sworn better though I am not a fan of the low fantasy genre. Epic fantasy is always the direction I like... The premise could be amazing and that cover sells it. If I'm honest, the audiobook is not doing anyone any favors.
Will I read the next?
Possibly. It is not going to be at the top of my to be read list. It might be one which will sit on the list for a while. It might be better to not read the next one for a few months then go back and try the eBook only on Kindle Unlimited. This will probably turn the review in a more positive direction.
This was fine, there’s nothing wrong with it per se. I just couldn’t get into it for some reason. You know.
Unfortunately I just couldn’t get into this book. It was slow to start and ended abruptly. It’s the start of a series but I’m not sure I would rush to read the second.
This book had such an amazing and interesting idea however, it didn't deliver to the fullest of its potential. It is confusing with characters being introduced with zero character traits other than being fae or a hunter. Additionally, the romance was off-putting and it would've been better if it was written in a different way. I was so close to stopping at the 25% mark but I finished it through. Finally, I don't think I will be reading the rest of the series.
