The Lost Ones (also published as All the Pretty Ones in the US) is the first Detective Jackie Cooke procedural thriller by Marnie Riches. Released 7th June 2022, it's 324 pages and is available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free. The second book in the series, The Silent Dead, is also currently available on KU.

This is a fundamentally well written and constructed serial-killer police procedural featuring a pregnant detective (should this be a subgenre at this point?) and an ensemble cast of mostly capable multi-ethnic investigators and tech support. The antagonistic boss stereotype is thrown in for dramatic effect. Although trope-y in structure, it's twisty and not completely predictable which was delightful. Fans of gritty procedurals will foresee some of the developments, but almost certainly not all.

The writing is more than competent, and the author does dramatic tension very, very well. Some of the descriptions are fairly graphic. Definitely one for the readers who don't mind vivid descriptions of the aftermath of violent acts.

Four stars. Fans of Jeffrey Deaver, Peter Robinson, and Angela Marsons will find much to like here.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Suspenseful to the core and a very good police procedural. I appreciated going along on Jackie’s investigation.

This book is told by Jackies POV. This book was impossible to put down . The pacing was fast with lots of twists
and turns. Even though I picked it, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the first installment with the Jackie Cooke series.

When a local girl with downs goes missing after school detective Jackie Cooke is on the scene immediately. The case triggers memories of her missing brother the one case she could never solve. When more children with downs start to go missing there's someone out there purposely targeting those who trust too much. Jackie won't rest until she finds out who and why.

This was a great book and I am so excited to get stuck into the series so I hope it continues. I honestly have zero idea why it's taken me so long to actually write this review because I read this book months ago!!

Jackie is a great protagonist and I found that I was completely engaged in her story throughout the entire novel. The police procedure was written so well and her commitment to the case was amazing to read!!! I loved it!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end a hard hitting subject matter and it doesn't get any easier as the book continues but its completely worth it.

All in all I rate this 4 stars 🌟 . I cannot wait to see where Jackie's story goes and I plan to go on the journey with her. I'm hooked!! If you are a fan of any crime fiction series written by Lisa Regan, DK Hood, Carla Kovach or Wendy Dranfield then this is the book for you.

Thanks Netgalley, The publishers and Marnie Richies for the ARC in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.

The Lost Ones is a classic police procedural crime thriller.
Of course, in this instance, classic entails a brilliant plot, exceptionally well written characters, and the start of a series that will have you hooked from the start.

Our lead protagonist, Jackie, carries a lot of baggage (literally and physically) that endears us towards her. However, first and foremost, she is a brilliant cop, perhaps to the detriment of her personal life (although that ass of a husband would still be an ass no matter what). Surrounded by Jackie are a host of other great characters, that are tangible and believable in every aspect (well, perhaps its worth mentioning that our criminal stretches our imagination as far as believable is concerned).

This is certainly a fast paced, enjoyable read. And I truly look forward to see what lies ahead for Jackie (surely she can’t balance everything can she).

Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture for a Review Copy

This was a page turner read where many times I had goosebumps while reading some of the creepy scenes.

I loved how the author can describe everything, make it real and still addictive at the same time.

I felt for Jackie and her job. Battling her own past with emotional distress and trying to bring justice to those innocent girls is not an uncomplicated way to go about your life, especially when the noses won’t want to spare a moment of their time.

Twisted, addictive and intriguing story

Rating: 4.5 Stars

A chilling serial killer thriller that will have you jumping out of your skin, Marnie Riches’ The Lost Ones is a nail-biting crime novel you will want to devour in one sitting.

When Detective Jackie Cooke is called to a crime scene, she is shocked by what she finds. Missing teenager Chloe Smedley has been found, carefully posed by her killer with her big blue eyes open and alert. Having never got over the pain of her brother being abducted as a child and never found, Jackie vows to do everything in her power to find the monster who did this to Chloe. Footage is found of Chloe waving at someone on the day she disappeared which makes Jackie wonder whether the dead girl knew whoever did this to her…

When another body is found on the side of a busy motorway, the only thing connecting this case to Chloe’s murder is the way the body has been arranged. The more Jackie looks into these deaths, the more she is positive that whoever is doing this is preying upon lonely and vulnerable people. Yet, Jackie doesn’t seem to be able to convince her bosses of her theories as they want to take her off the case! Jackie is not about to let anyone tell her what to do – only she never imagined that she would be the one in danger as one day when returning home she spots on her kitchen counter the bracelet her brother was wearing the day he vanished!

Is there a connection to her brother’s disappearance? Jackie won’t stop until she finds whoever did this and throws them in jail where they belong – unless they find her first!

Marnie Riches’ The Lost Ones is an exhilarating crime thriller that had me chewing my nails to the elbow! A heart-pounding and hair-raising chiller with a terrific new detective I certainly want to read more about, The Lost Ones is creepy, captivating and twisted crime fiction at its unputdownable best.

Marnie Riches knows how to construct a crime thriller that keeps you reading all through the night and The Lost Ones is an outstanding page-turner Angela Marsons and Patricia Gibney fans need to add to their auto-buy list.

This was just like every other police procedural. I found myself having a hard time getting invested in the murder and the characters back stories. Just too much of the same for me. It was a miss

I am adding 'All the Pretty Ones' by Marnie Riches to my list of 'first book in any new police procedurial/mystery series that managed to seriously impress my grey cells!

This book had everything that I want to read in a gritty, fast paced, slightly macabre police procedural thriller. Plus, in detective thrillers I am always a sucker for a storyline where the case in question somehow overlaps a personal tragedy suffered in the past by the detective in charge of solving the case. It takes the detecting skills of the MC to a different level and there is never a dull moment because its personal. Mystery/police procedural thrillers is one of my favourite genres to read and it is always a good thing when I am spoiled for choice.

A definite, impressive start to a new police procedurial series and I can't wait to read more!

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture and the author Marnie Riches for the e-Arc of the book.

I’m on the fence. I will be reading book 2 to see. There are some things so engaging about the cast of characters but there was something that didn’t sit well with me. I just can’t put my finger on it. Time will tell.

Police procedural featuring Detective Jackie Cooke who is six months pregnant. Good characters and lots of twists and turns. Bit dark in places but an enjoyable read.

Jackie Cooke is six months pregnant but won't let anything get in the way of catching a killer. The victim is a teenager with Down's Syndrome and Jackie feels a close connection as her own brother had the condition and disappeared at a young age. The body has been dismembered and then pieces of another victim are found...
The Lost Ones is the first book in a new series that will feature detective Jackie Cooke and her team.
I have to start by saying that I LOVED Jackie's character. I could really relate to Jackie as she is written in such a natural way that brings her character to life. There is some danger for Jackie and her baby as she chases down suspects which adds extra drama to the story.
I was so frustrated by her family and superiors not valuing her and taking her for granted. She is a working mum who tries to leave the horrors of her job at the front door. Her husband feels stifled being a house husband who wants to be in a band. She took a demotion at work and her replacement sees her as a threat so is trying to force her out (or could she be genuinely concerned about the pressure of the job on a heavily pregnant woman?)
We are introduced to the killer at the beginning of the books as they watch and plan. This is quite sinister and prepares us for the murder. The personal aspect of the case for Jackie is emotional and makes her even more determined to stop the killer. Tension and suspense were maintained well over the course of the book and the pace is quite speedy.
The Lost Ones was a gripping detective thriller and police procedural.

As a new reader of Marnie Riches, this is a cracker of an introduction!
This is a dark, action packed read that crams a lot of work into just one book. It was very busy at times, but I much prefer that to being a 'slow burn'!
The plot keeps the reader racing through the story, but I admit to struggling with the many subplots occasionally.
This is the start of a new series, and Detective Cooke is a fabulous character to lead us through. Determined and head strong, I look forward to seeing what happens to her next!

All the things I love in a great detective story! Especially involving a serial killer - great book!

This was my first novel by Marnie Riches and I’m thrilled that this will be a series. Riches was able to quickly grab my attention and I lost sleep quickly “turning” the pages. This book takes us deep into the underbelly of the dark web, showing us that our biggest nightmare may be closer than we think.

I loved the strong female lead, the plot, and the writing. I felt like I was reading an episode of Criminal Minds! Very detailed and paced perfect – the visualizations you will receive may not be pretty but are impactful. Having ayoung son , this book drilled home the fact that you can never take your eyes off your kids – even for a second.

I started this book in the garden on a sunny afternoon planning to read a couple of chapters, Some time later I realised the sun had set lon ago and I hadn't noticed, I was so totally absorbed in this story. It's a really excellent police procedural with some great characters, I loved Dave and Shazia and can't wait to learn more about them. The murders that are rocking Manchester are truly heinous but somehow the author managed to describe what had been done to some of society's most vulnerable people without it coming across as merely gratuitous and for shock value. This is the first book in a series and I will be watching with baited breath for the release of the follow up.
