I listened to this as an audiobook.
My first Edwin Hill read, and I really enjoyed it. A true thriller that kept me guessing until the end. With lots of characters, and a story told from multiple views over multiple generations, it wasn’t a book that I could read casually - luckily it was good enough to binge read.
Fast paced, lots of twists, and definitely kept me entertained.
Two sisters, a murder and lies. Sounds intriguing right? Are memories real? Part of the truth, part forgotten and made up.
Natalie Cavanaugh and Glenn Abbott are sisters who are very different. Glenn, the younger sister is poised and a new author, but her fans are not aware of her past. Natalie is a cop and very practical. Their father’s body was discovered by Natalie twenty years ago in the woods by their home. Natalie soon learns that she is being watched. Does someone know about her past?
As another body is found in an abandon building, their past could create more problems. Natalie believed her dad was killed by his lover, whom was a neighbor. Are her memories accurate? Does Glenn know more than she lets on? Are the murders connected?
Two big "secret shares" about "The Secrets We Share":
1) The biggest "secret" about "The Secrets We Share" is that the book is really a "YA" book.
One of the key protagonists is a 12-year old girl and throughout the entire book, I felt like the author's tone was geared towards teen girls and not adults.
This being said, this book is a fabulous book for YAs and for adults who enjoy YA novels.
Had I known that this book was a YA book, I never would have selected the book to read and review.
2) Another "secret" about "The Secrets We Share" is that it was "same old, same old".
I am a huge fan of "fresh content" and I was not reading anything "new and different" in this book. In fact, I recently read three books with similar "surprise" endings, so instead of being surprised, I was disappointed and underwhelmed.
In addition to being a compelling book for fans of YA fiction, this book would also be a top choice introductory novel for someone who has never read a psychological thriller.
I listened to the audiobook and although narrator Hannah Cabell did a superb job, the book featured multiple protagonists and would have benefited from full-cast audio.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
2 stars rounded up.
Wow this audiobook was so good I listened in a day!
Two sisters share a horrible secret from their past and now they have to wonder is history repeating itself?
There are two timelines. One from the past when the girls were young. And the other is the present. Natalie is a detective with a slight drinking problem. Glenn is married with a child she adores and a cookbook about to be released. Glenn is so good she doesn’t even eat gluten!
Very fast paced with terrific characters. This is my first by this author (& narrator) but it definitely won’t be my last!
4 stars
This is a really enjoyable mystery/thriller that is fantastic in the audiobook format.
There are quite a few characters popping in and out of this fast-paced series of events, but Glenn and Natalie, sisters who share past and current trauma, are mostly at the center. As the title suggests, there are plentiful secrets to be had, and while some of them are shared between characters, some of the most intriguing are shared between characters and the reader.
The absolute standout star of this entire piece is Mavis, Glenn's very young daughter. I need a whole series of novels featuring this character, and I am certain that many readers - maybe close to ALL readers - will agree. She is smart, crafty, focused, and trying her best to make all of her _CSI: Miami_ viewing worthwhile. While I found the plot and other characters engaging, I don't have to dig deep to know that she carried this whole piece for me.
Although there are A LOT of moments when it seems like a character should have caught on to something or someone, their failure to do so in many ways reflects their (and perhaps modern people's?) self-interests. I enjoyed this one and would like to offer a special thanks to the audiobook narrator for making this an even more exciting ride. I'll be on the lookout for more from this author.
I binged this twisty thriller in two days time, not wanting to stop unless I had to. The characters were all well-crafted, complicated, and suspicious. Which added to this story, always wondering who could have done what. The twists weren’t at all what I suspected and I loved that I was consistently surprised as things were revealed. It all tired up nicely at the end, which I personally prefer when reading a stand along.
I read this through a combo of audio and hardback. I think the “inner monologue” sections were tough to understand in the audio, but the narration was great.
Thank you, Partner @bibliolifestyle @kensingtonbooks for the gifted copy and to @netgalley and RB Media for the gifted audio arc in exchange for an honest review!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Right at the beginning of this book there are so many bodies and potential for bodies being thrown around, that it becomes a deranged Oprah show.
Also, a fantastic cautionary tale if your teen won't listen about staying away from dangerous places.
This is one of those thrillers that are so fantastically plotted that you might guess bits and pieces, here and there, but those pieces fit into a whole larger puzzle of twists that are an absolute master class.
The Secrets We Share by Edwin Hill is a great book! I loved how the author wove the coincidences of past and present crimes, and made me wonder. The characters of Natalie and Glenn were so well done. I understand the sister bond, and how different they can be. This is my first book by the author, and definitely not my last. I love crime-thriller-mystery stories, and this one fits the bill. Hannah Cabell performed the book flawlessly. Her distinctive POV characters were so good. I could envision so many details. The twists in the book kept me guessing too. Thank you #NetGalley and #RB Media for allowing me to listen to this pre-release book, I loved it!
Thank you Netgalley and RB media for this Alc.
I enjoyed the inveatigation even was a little wild with so involved detective. But was interesting, murder in the past and murder now.. Cheeting, secrets and just not telling the true and all behind. And family matters kind of book. It was a gripping story that has suspance ans mistery. I love the location in Boston, I would really like to visit.
