The Lost Bone in the fifth in the Mackenzie Price series. Mackenzie is a detective in the Lakemore PD. She comes back from a run to discover the dead fiancée of her co-worker, a woman who's been missing for 2 years in her car trunk. Next, another woman she knows, a bully from school, turns up dead.
I never did get totally engaged in the story or with the characters. I think part of that might be because I hadn’t read the earlier books in the series. Choudhari references some of the background from those books but doesn’t delve deeply. I didn’t feel the book worked well as a stand-alone.
The town almost comes across as a character, given a past of shady dealings and corruption. And one specific area of the town might even be haunted. And the story revolves around a conspiracy of society bigwigs which I struggled to find believable. In fact, the more the story went on, the more unbelievable it all became. Mackenzie has a complicated past, which was hinted at (and probably more fully explained in prior stories). But I am in the minority here, as other reviews are much more positive.
This is not a series I will continue with.
My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
Another exciting chapter in the files of Mackenzie Price. People keep disappearing and leaving message for Mack near the bodies. Tensions are mounting and mack and Nick need to figure this out. Who is doing this ? Why do more and more clues point to the hinky Tombstone?
The action was fast paced. There are flashbacks that reveal snippets of Mack’s past that correlate to the plot. Some of the scenes made me suck in my breath and wince.
I liked the ending and the possibilities for Mack and another main character. She deserves some happiness. After all, she lives in gloomy Lakesmore!
The Lost Bones is the 5th book in this series and it's the best one so far (I hope there will be a lot of other "best books").
Before writing this review, I was thinking about this series and the reasons why I loved it.
I could list the classical reasons: gripping, compelling, entertaining, well written, and so on.
But these reasons are valid for other series as well and this one has something that makes it fly: all characters evolve and the Mackenzie of book 5 is different from Mad Mack of book 1.
There's a lot going on in this book and there's a lot going on in Mackenzie's life. The crimes and the investigations make her face her past and I hope to read the next book soon because I want to meet that Mackenzie.
After these blah-blahs I want to talk about the plot and it's fast paced, action packed, and adrenaline fuelled.
It's more gritty and darker than the previous books and it brings the characters to some very dark places. I loved how the author deals with the twists and the social issues in this book.
It's a highly entertaining and gripping story that I strongly recommend.
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I absolutely love the Mckenzie Price series she's such a well written leading lady abd each caee triggers thoughts of her past in one way or another. BOOK 5 IN THE SERIES read book 1 to 4 If you are thinking of reading this book, its one of my favourite series.
Mckenzie is horrified when she goes to her car and finds a dead body in her trunk, even worse she knows who the woman is a face she can't forget as she's spent the summer searching for her. With cryptic messages left for her personally as the bodies start to pile up, bodies of people who once wronged Mckenzie she knows its personal and she's finding it hard to leave her emotions at home. Question is why is someone killing for Mckenzie when she isn't asking them to?
So ad I said I love this series and this was one of those installments that had my mind blown from start to finish. I honestly thought I had it all sussed even when elements of the case came to light. But I was so off the mark it was unreal. I must admit I suspect Mckenzie for a second but she clearly is Jo killer after burying a body ad a child. Soo followed the breadcrumbs and still ended up not having a clue. I FRIGGING LOVE IT, it's rare I don't randomly guess someone outrageous but heyho.
As usual I loved reading her budding relationship with Nivk it is just so dam cute. The dance of flirting and friendship it's written so well, need then to get it of soon!! Plus their friendship banter is just great to read although a few comments made by each of them made me laugh so hard.
I will issue a trigger warning talk of forced prostition, a few graphic sex images and of full of sadness. High level members of society entertaining the use of prostitutes, or rather coercing then into sexual activity. It really pulls at your heart strings, and when she finds herself in this huge house during a gentleman's club the description of it and its lay out is so well done I felt I was there.
The case was quite confusing trying to guess who was obsessed enough with Mckenzie to start killing for her with the documentary meant there were so many different suspects for so many different reasons. Like I said I got it so wrong I loved it!
Plus the torment this brought for Mckenzie with constant flash backs to her past was so interesting to read we obviously know about her helping her mother. But you really get to read to about how much guilt she still carries with her, this was further confirmed with more therapy sessions with Andrew.
All in all I absolutely loved this book, If I could give it more than 5* I would honestly!!! I found the prose was written so well and the case wasn't to complex to follow. I also loved the fact that there were so many suspects and no really evidence pointing anywhere. I also think the way the sex ring was brought in was done with so much delicacy and respect. What an amazing book. Roll on the next.
Thank you to Netgalley, Ruhi Choudary and bookouture for the digital ARC in exchange for far and honest opinions.
4.5⭐
The Lost Bones is my first introduction to author Ruhi Choudhary and Detective Mackenzie Price, and it was a fantastic introduction to a character who completely grabbed my attention, even though I wasn't sure if I liked her to begin with.
But by the end I was completely sold and the story itself had me hooked with so many twists and a killer I did not expect or see coming.
Furthermore, I loved how detailed everything was and the pacing was spot on too. Not to mention there is something delightfully creepy about the town and the characters that just makes you want to read more.
I would definitely recommend.
Returning from a run early one morning, Detective Mackenzie Price of the Lakemore Police Department was puzzled to see the boot of her car was slightly open. But when she couldn’t close it, her horror at what was inside made her stumble back. Ringing her partner, Detective Nick Blackwood, he was soon at her home, along with members of the force. Sophie Fields had gone missing twelve months prior, and her fiancé was a colleague at the police department. The horror included a personal message for Mack.
When another body was discovered after being missing for a couple of days, it was a person who bullied Mack at school – and included another personal message for Mack. What was going on? Was the killer obsessed with Mack, with keeping her safe? Nick and Mack, along with other team members, combed the areas for clues, finally finding a connection. But when direction led to people in high places of Lakemore, once again Mack and her team were bamboozled. And what was happening in nearby Tombstone?
The Lost Bones is the 5th in the Detective Mackenzie Price series by Ruhi Choudhary and it was breathtakingly brilliant. Her best yet in my opinion! Mackenzie is a great character and she and Nick work well together. The tension was high, the pages turned themselves – I’m keen for #6 already. Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
A digital ARC of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and Bookouture. The opinions are my own and freely given.
The Lost Bones is the 5th in the Detective Mackenzie Price series. Bodies are found in Lakemore with messages for Mackenzie. A woman is found beaten and catatonic. A mass grave is found in the woods. These are just a few of the mysteries surrounding Mackenzie and Nick, her partner. Then someone close to Mackenzie is abducted and they are on the clock to find them before it is too late. I like the way this book is starting with the prologue that is really towards to the end of the book, to hook you and make you want to finish reading, and boy did it suck me in. I thought about 2/3 of the way in that I knew who the murderer was but I was wrong. If you haven't read Detective Mackenzie Price before, I highly recommend it. Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Ruhi Choudhary.
Oh this book was brilliant. I was hooked before the end of the prologue. I flew through it in one day as there's no way I could put it down.
The fast pace, the twists and turns just kept the pages turning.
I was absolutely convinced I knew who it was but no, I was so wrong.
I love this series. Mack is a great character and I love reading these books. Can't wait for book 6.
It seems, much to Detective Mackenzie Price's dismay, that since her participation in a film about females in law enforcement her fame precedes her. Her popularity in Lakemore isn't universal however, and Mack knows she is also her own worse enemy. Convinced someone has been watching her, following her, even though she has no proof, her fear levels are stretched to the max but they go through the roof when a dead body is found on her property. Realising those with any type of personal connection could be the next target of their unknown suspect there seems no way to anticipate their next move.
Frustrated by a lack of progress and the addition of a profiler to the team Mackenzie has a feeling things will get a great deal worse before anything begins to get better! With an increasing feeling of helplessness Mack finds herself and partner Detective Nick Blackwood up against an invisible force as decisions go against them and they have to consider resorting to methods of detection less acceptable to them than usual.
This is the fifth book in the ever improving Mackenzie Price Mystery Series and is easily the best one so far. Shocking, and revealing in equal measure, with an easy humor between the partners it was an absolute pleasure to read. There was an instance where I thought I was going to be disappointed by the outcome but it was a deliberate ploy and I hadn't been as clever as I thought at all!
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is one of the best books I've read this year and comes highly recommended.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advance read of this title.
Another thrilling read from this series.
I love the character development of Mack since the start of the series. I think this is the best one of the series so far. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I recommend reading this series from the start.
Holy Smokes!
That was FANTASTIC.
Every single book in this series gets better. Great character development. WOW.
I can’t wait for more. Mad Mack is so cool and Nick…
This author has built an outstanding series.
I love this series and was excited to get into the latest addition. I was not disappointed and found myself whizzing through this. It is one of my favourite series at the moment.
🤕🏞Unpredictable spree of obsession, murder and abuse: riveting😲
4.5🌟 stars
The Lost Bones was my first read in this Washington State-based Mackenzie Price series. I was really swept away by the string of murders seemingly directly connected to Police Detective Mackenzie Price and the way Mackenzie and her colleagues bend and even break the rules to save lives and stave off more violence and abuse. It's not a short book but I found the pages whizzing by as one complication after another kept the suspense level high. Plenty of twists in the investigation too and it takes a good portion of the story before the tie between the plot and the book's title becomes obvious.
I really liked the relationship between Mackenzie and fellow detective Nick. I also liked the way Ruhi Choudhary balanced Mackenzie's personal life with the investigation: her story and her emotional reactions are significant but do not distract too much from solving the case.
I did find a few inconsistencies in the story (for instance, one victim was supposedly killed on the night she disappeared yet later she was described as bound and starved for 48 hours), but they really had no noticeable effect on the handling of the case.
My one issue with the story is that references to Mackenzie's past crop up often when her thoughts turn back to traumatic moments from years before. I have a feeling I need to read the earlier books in the series to get a clear picture. For instance, the author mentions Rob and his watch that Mackenzie wears. I guessed that Rob was her father but it took me awhile to put together the references to figure it out.
And I still don't know exactly what her mom did and why her father "disappeared" when she was a child; I'd like to know as it's so important to understanding Mackenzie's motuvations.
On the basis of my enjoyment of this story, I want to read more by this author.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Chilling! Chilling in a good way as I am a reader, but such a horrible thing if this would be reality. Well-written and well-plotted, as I am used to when it comes to Ruhi Choudhary's books. My expectations are high, but this author can deliver!
My favourite books in whatever series it is that I am reading are the ones that makes it personal, even taking "personal" to another level. This is one of those books. When a detective finds a body dumped into her trunk, and the detective recognizes the body immediately, well, fair to say this is personal. If only it would stop at one dead body.
I would recommend this book in a heartbeat to anyone enjoying detective stories, police procedural with great characters, and all in all to anyone who enjoys a good read. Fast-paced, yet an in-depth story, what more do you want? Brilliantly written, fantastic characters! What's not to love?
In a sick attempt to earn Detective Price's favor, someone is killing people who appear to be a threat to "Mad Mack." The first kill is left for her in the trunk of Mack's car. The body is a woman that has been missing and someone she had tried to find for the woman's fiancé. The next victims include a bully in Mack's elementary school days and a local TV reporter always looking to take down Mack and the police.. As the team seeks answers, a professional profiler consults and provides some helpful insights about what is in the mind of the killer. As the body count rises, Mack worries about those closest to her, but the perp has an eye on her. It's an exciting ride that includes Mack realizing what is missing in her life, but will she do something about it?
This series really just keeps getting better. The case is twisted and jaw dropping at times. It's fast paced and kept me guessing until the reveal. I was so wrong! Which I love. Mackenzie has grown since book one and this story showcases that. Nick is one of my favorite characters and his daughter is great comic relief. She's so feisty. The end of this one left me with hope for a relationship FINALLY brewing. I can't get the next one fast enough. This author is a must read for me.
First let me say that if you have not read the first four books in this series, I recommend it. The Lost Bones is #5 and makes references to events from books 1-4 that I was like "whoa....what? " Now for the review.
The story over all I found to be a little long but very good. The two main characters Detective Mackenzie Price and Detective Nick Blackwood seemed to fade within the story individually but as a team help each other shine. Lastly, without giving to much away I feel the plot twist is great, surprising and all knowing.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of The Lost Bones, the fifth novel to feature Detective Mackenzie Price, set in the fictional Washington State town of Lakemore.
Mack returns from a run to find her boot lid ajar and on investigation finds a dead woman. She recognises her as Sophie Fields, the fiancée of Detective Austin Kennedy, who disappeared two years earlier. Even worse, there is a note for Mack with the body. Then another woman is found dead with a message for Mack and she’s not the last.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Lost Bones, which is another exciting read full of twists and turns and is, in my opinion, the best in the series so far. It is apparent that the unidentified killer feels some kind of affinity with Mack, so the novel is is full of tension and unease, which the author does well as it communicates itself to the reader and makes the novel really atmospheric.
I should point out that the plot is not overly realistic in its totality, but that’s hardly important when it is absorbing and entertaining. It starts with a dead body and a killer’s focus on Mack, but widens into something darker and more horrible, but in keeping with the theme of the series, how far the powerful will go to make Lakemore prosper, be it attempts to stifle dissent or to hide wrongdoing.
The plot runs at a fast pace with developments on what seems like every page. It never flags and had me turning the pages feverishly to see what was coming next. The twists are great, but the final one is the real shocker that I would never have guessed.
The novel is also a kind of coming of age for Mackenzie Price. She has always been self sufficient, walled off emotionally by her guilt over the past and what she had to do. This is explored in the previous novels and I would recommend any reader with a primary focus on character to read the series in order. The stress she feels in this novel pushes her back to that past in her dreams, but it also gives her an understanding of where she’s been and a need to move forward. It’s well done and I look forward to the new Mackenzie Price who will be the same with softer edges, I hope.
The Lost Bones is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Another fantastic read by Ruhi, it is a great story line which had me gripped from the start.
I highly recommend this series to everyone.
This is not like any police procedural novel you have ever read before. There is a killer on the loose, who is killing ‘enemies’ of Detective Mackenzie Price. The killer taunts the small-town police force to figure out where the kidnapped victims could be. Chilling personalized messages are left at each crime scene for Det. Price. Someone is watching our Detective. The feeling of being watched was unsettling and unnerving.
Throughout each investigation the weather appears as another main character. Storms arise out of nowhere, mimicking the suspenseful search for each victim. The author deftly uses the description of each rainstorm and windstorm to add tension and touches of creepiness. It is almost like there’s supernatural forces at work.
This book had me reading all night to finish it. If you want intrigue and drama, with twists you will not see coming, then this is the book for you. This is part of a series but works as a standalone novel.
