This book follows a woman, Noelle, trying to escape her abusive relationship. Although this book had great twists and turns, I found parts of the book to seem a bit outlandish. There was a decent amount of foreshadowing throughout the book to lead the reader to guess the ending, which some people really enjoy when reading a mystery or thriller.
An aspect of the book I enjoyed was ~most~ of the characters have qualities that make the reader empathize with them. There is character development throughout this book's wild ride. The end took one too many tumbles and was hard to get through in the end, in my opinion, but still a good read!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Jessica Payne’s Make Me Disappear. All opinions are my own.
Noelle is a pretty and smart nurse at a local hospital. She’s dating a successful and well respected anesthesiologist Dr. Ashcroft. However, all is not as it appears, and the relationship isn’t a happy one. Noelle has come to realize her boyfriend is extremely controlling, and she believes he may be responsible for the death of someone she loved.
Desperate to escape from the relationship but realizing no one will believe her, Noelle impulsively arranges to have herself kidnapped. It is meant to be akin to an extreme adventure - she pays a fee, she’ll be kidnapped, her boyfriend will think it’s real, and this will be her opportunity to escape. However, as we know, things like this rarely go according to plan…
Make Me Disappear was a wild ride from start to finish. When I began the book, I was certain I knew who the villain was and how the events would play out. I’m not ashamed to admit I was completely wrong. There were a lot of red herrings along the way to keep me guessing, but in the end, all was revealed. The conclusion of the novel was ultimately very satisfying. I particularly enjoyed the Author’s Note at the end; it was very relatable and gave the book a little something extra that the author had shared a part of herself with us readers.
Highly recommended for a fun and twisty read that keeps you on your toes. I give this a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Read this book!!! If you liked Gone Girl and You, you will LOVE this book! Told in two different POVs with the two main characters, worked so well for me! Such a great, cleverly done domestic thriller! Felt original, and fresh, hard to believe it is a debut! Some parts were a little predictable, but overall I really enjoyed the book and can’t wait to see what Jessica Payne comes out with next!
The story is filled with so many layers, with secrets, betrayals, revenge, lies and manipulation that will keep you interested. Short chapters, twists and fast pacing cat and mouse chases will make you stay up all night!
The writing style is really good, told in dual POV with different timeline lets the reader gain insight slowly to what happen and what's on the character's mind.
The characters are very interesting to follow. This is one of those books where I have mix feelings for the characters, I hate that person so much but in the end I felt pity too... (?)
Overall, for a debut novel this is a great psychological thriller. The ending is a bit far fetched but still an enjoyable read for me.
I'm really looking forward to read future books from this author!
Thank you to Netgalley, Jessica Payne and Bookouture for granting me this e-ARC. I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
I read so many books and always hope a new thriller will satisfy me like Between You and Me and The Last Mrs Parish. I’m looking for a great build up, lots of twists and an amazing ending with a real surprise. All too often, I’m left feeling disappointed and deflated and this was the case with this book.
It started off very promising and I was racing through the pages and then halfway through it became all a bit silly and unbelievable and my interest began to wain.
I didn’t like the way Daniel spoke, he really irritated me and it was all a bit cliched. I carried on as I wanted to find out how the book ended and to see if I’d figured out who the bad guy was - and I did.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked the back and forth of this book between the two main characters. I do wish there had been more flashbacks of a few months ago to really get the feel for the interaction between the characters. There was a nice plot twist at the end, and overall this was a fun, twisty read! I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review
This was a very enjoyable debut thriller. So many twists and turns that kept my attention. Look forward to reading more by this author
Wow! Gone girl, meets You, meets insane family? Noelle finds herself in a controlling and manipulative relationship with a raging narcissist. In an attempt to escape she hires a company to kidnap her. Before her kidnappers come through, she is kidnapped by someone else. Is this another attempt for Daniel to control her?
I didn’t see the twist coming at the end! I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book!
I think newcomers to the thriller genre will enjoy Make Me Disappear better than seasoned vets. It was a bit tame for my taste and personally I’m over the “rich, handsome, controlling, yet untouchable doctor” trope. I also didn’t feel a real connection in any of the characters’ relationships, something I need to feel to truly care about the characters’ well being. Noelle particularly left me feeling detached and I just didn’t buy in to her journey.
Overall, I think this is a better read for thriller newbies who don’t want anything too sinister but enjoy a little tension and twist.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance electronic copy in exchange for an honest review.
Oh. My. God. I loved this book. I loved every single thing about it. It gave me creepy Norman Bates set in Seattle vibes. Look, I wish I could say more, but I can’t without giving it away. Just get your hands on this, to quote Michael Scott, asap as possible.
This was one of the most exciting and uniquely strange thrillers I’ve ever read before. A fab debut and I cannot wait to see what else Jessica Payne has in store for the future.
Noelle is dating Daniel, to anyone on the outside everything looks great however on the inside things are totally different. Noelle no longer trusts Daniel, he’s manipulative, controlling and he watches her every move.
Noelle has no idea how she is going to get away from Daniel as he isn’t the sort of guy who just lets a woman walk away. Resorting to desperate measures Noelle fakes her own kidnapping and makes herself disappear. For poor Noelle things don’t go quite to plan as someone has other ideas for her and with secrets from Daniels past starting to surface Noelle wonders if she has made a terrible mistake.
This was a brilliant debut novel and I won’t say to much more as I don’t want to give anything away this book was highly addictive and I found myself picking up my kindle at every possible opportunity. I did work out the ending and the culprit behind the many twists and turns this book had however that didn’t take away from the enjoyment of this book.
Thank you to NetGalley the publishers and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
Make Me Disappear is the story of Noelle who is dating a very handsome, controlling, pretentious, sociopath doctor. There are clues to his personality and what is going to happen, but Noelle is initially blinded by what she believes is a good man. Always look for the clues....
Daniel is watching Noelle. He is also watching her family as she discovers the truth thinking it is his home security monitor. As she digs into strange events she realizes that she is in danger and so are her loved ones.
The story is told from two different points of views, Noelle and Daniel. At first Noelle's are all about how great Daniel is, and how wonderful it all is dating him. But slowly she begins to see Daniel is not who she thinks he is. Daniel on the other hand is exactly what we think he is. His points of view chapters are chilling.
Noelle is hit by a car and nearly dies, Daniel offers for her to move in with him so he can care for her. After she recovers she wants to go home to her own place. Daniel reacts badly and she blurts out they need to take a break. Well that sets off a whole new control level for Daniel who refuses to break up. He lays out conditions for her as if she will merrily accept them. More clues that this is going to end badly. Noelle decides she needs to get away from Daniel. After awhile she realizes there is no escape.
This is an escalating psychological thriller. This is a case of the cat and the mouse. But what happens when a rat is discovered, and who will win the game.
A good 3.5 debut thriller.
It was hard to put this book down and it stayed on my mind while I was otherwise occupied. I did happen to guess the twist around halfway through but it was still very well executed.
The only issue I had was that Noelle's POV felt quite repetitive which broke the flow of the story. Jessica managed to make me genuinely despise some characters which is a sign of a fantastic author. I will not hesitate to read another from Jessica.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for an eARC copy got an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Jessica Payne for this gripping thriller.
Definitely it is one of the unputdownable thriller books I have read. In total 85 chapters, surprisingly, not a second of dull moment. Instead they are all packed and intense.
In a manipulating relationship, somehow rules are needed to survive. What an unthinkable idea. No disagreement with your another half - extraordinary tiring…therefore Noelle had a plan to make herself disappear. Then she would be safe.
But wait, Noelle boyfriend’s ex was also disappeared?
For those who love reading twisty plots, you will love this book. Those twists were mind-blowing and jaw-dropping.
WOW I am absolutely blown away by this fantastically twisty debut! I had to double check after finishing it that this was Jessica Paynes first novel because I honestly still have a hard time believing it.
This extremely tense and twisty thriller gave off similar vibes of some of my all time favorite books, and I highly recommend to those who enjoyed Behind Closed Doors or You.
I absolutely could not put my kindle down reading this book and the last 10% had my jaw on the floor, which is hard to find as someone who reads a LOT of thrillers. I recommend going into this one not knowing a whole lot like I did and just enjoy the extremely tense ride. Jessica Payne is a force to be reckoned with in the thriller world and i cannot wait for her next release.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC copy! Run, don’t walk to pick this one up when it publishes on May 16th!
Thank you so much @jessicapayne.writer and @netgalley for my advance copy! I was so excited because I have seen so much praise for Make Me Disappear and the praise isn’t wrong!
This is one wild ride. I cannot believe this is a debut. I would have read this in one sitting if I didn’t have to work. I was so vested. The characters are so fleshed out and realistic. I really enjoyed Noelle (main character) she is strong, tough and takes charge. I love when the female is a bad ass! I also enjoyed what Jessica had to say in the author’s note about why she wrote Noelle the way she did. It really resonated with me. Daniel is just the right amount of creepy, asshole psychopath that you can’t help but enjoy. He reminded me of Joe Goldberg and all his lovely Joe ways. I loved all the ways that he was played (don’t want to give any spoilers) but, I will just say the word *Porsche* and if you read it, you will know!
This is told in two POV’s (Noelle and Daniel’s) and I enjoyed the flip-flopping between the two. It really kept you on your toes and helped add to the major twist at the end! Believe me the ending is jaw dropping. If the synopsis sounds like something you have read before-think again!
"The irony does not escape me; being stolen from my life is the only way for me to be free."
What a fun, twisty debut! I really enjoyed being along on this ride and I was annoyed when I had to stop reading and go to work. You're a fan of Kiersten Modglin I think you're enjoy this highly readable thriller.
From the outside, Noelle has the perfect life. She is working her dream job as a nurse, and her handsome, wealthy anesthesiologist boyfriend does everything he can to take care of her. But appearances can be deceiving because rich, handsome Daniel is actually a controlling, abusive douchebag that won't let Noelle out of their relationship. She finally decides that the way only out is to disappear from her life entirely. But of course things don't quite go as Noelle planned....
This is a smart, well-written thriller with a smart, relatable female protagonist. I suspect we will be seeing more good things from Jessica Payne in the future.
”After all, as the saying goes, better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. Another bit of advice you should heed, Noelle.”
What a wild ride! Packed full of twists and turns than I never saw coming, Make Me Disappear is a well-written and engaging domestic thriller. This book kept me on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next.
”I have to get away. I can’t live my life under the scrutiny of someone who’s waiting for an opportunity to hurt me.”
Noelle’s seemingly-perfect boyfriend, Daniel, is actually anything but. He monitors every aspect of her life, installing hidden cameras in her apartment and keystroke apps on her phone, in an effort to control her as tightly as possible. Convinced that her only option is to disappear, Noelle plans to stage her own kidnapping. But someone must know what she’s up to, because her plans are thwarted when she is kidnapped for real…
”Aren’t you glad I’ve been watching you, Noelle? Without the cameras, I wouldn’t know you’ve been a victim of a crime. You’re welcome. You practically owe me your life.”
The story reminded me of a mash-up of You, with the controlling, narcissistic boyfriend whose behavior is a little too stalker-esque, and The Last Flight, with the girlfriend who is willing to go to any lengths to escape her harmful relationship.
”Noelle, you’re not the only one with something up your sleeve.”
This book had so many unexpected twists, and nearly everyone in the story has something to hide! It was a fast-paced, enjoyable read that I finished in less than 24 hours. I’d give it a solid 4 stars!

A huge thank you to Jessica Payne, Bookouture, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Great debut book by author Jessica Payne. This is a suspenseful psychological thriller. In short, a great original page-turner. I loved it. It has everything a mystery reader will enjoy, strong characters, fast face, unexpected plot and surprise ending. Can't wait to read more from Jessica Payne.
Noelle is a nurse that has meet the perfect man. Dr. Daniel Ashcroft is handsome, wealthy and a successful doctor. At first he is attentive and a bit over protective. Noelle thinks this is sweet until it turns controlling and manipulative. Everything changes when she finds hidden cameras in her apartment. Noelle finds out that Daniel's previous girlfriend has been reported missing and was never found. Noelle begins to feel trapped and Daniel makes it clear she can not leave without risking everything she loves.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and give an honest review.
Make Me Disappear had me gripped from start to finish. There wasn't anything highly original or groundbreaking in here and the twist wasn't anything too surprising, but it was still a good read that had me hooked.
Noelle is a nurse, who is dating a charming and respected doctor from the hospital. In public he appears to be kind and doting, and they the perfect couple. Privately, he is controlling and obsessive (sounds like B. A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors). He has installed cameras in her apartment and tracks her phone and keystrokes on her computer. She finds out that his last girlfriend disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again. Believing that he killed her aunt and is threatening the life of her pregnant cousin because he wants to keep her all to herself, she arranges to disappear by having herself fake kidnapped (sounds like Julie Clark's The Last Flight). But when she is finally kidnapped, it's not by who she arranged it with and she's trapped, trying to determine who these guys are and who really did kidnap her to make her disappear - just not on her own terms.
