Wow! If this is her debut, I cannot wait to see how amazing her future books are. Make Me Disappear was an unputdownable domestic psychological thriller!
Portions of it reminded me of Gone Girl and the obsession portions reminded me of You! While I figured out the culprit, you will never guess the reason behind it!
This book caused my emotions to be on a wild roller coast! So many dark secrets, gaslighting, blackmail, and deceit has lead to a really thrilling read/listen that leaves you at the edge of your seat. Noelle didn’t know who she could trust! Do yourself a favor and READ THIS BOOK!
***** Many thanks to Bookouture, Bookouture (audio), Jessica Payne, and NetGalley for the gifted copy as it was provided to me in turn for my honest opinion.
4.5 stars rounding up on Goodreads.
Will be posted on thriller_book_sisters on 5/16/22
Thank you Netgalley and Bookature for this advance reader's copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book wasn't bad. It wasn't great, but it kept me reading. I didn't like the character Daniel. He wasn't supposed to be likeable, but I found him to be over the top and very unrealistic. I think it was his narration that I didn't like. I liked the story and I really like Noelle as the protagonist. She was a great character. Her cousin Cassie started off as a strong character, but was portrayed as week later on in the book. And there were a lot of plot holes that I wasn't a fan of. The twists were not all that shocking and it just fell flat in places. It was so confusing in places that when it was revealed what was going on, it didn't make much sense. I also just read a book with a very similar plot right before this one, so that might explain some of my feelings on it.
Don't get me wrong. This book was a page turner. I did find myself wanting to know what was going to happen next, but once I reached the conclusion, I felt a little let down. I know this book has been well received by many, but it just wasn't for me. For full disclosure, I did toggle back and forth from the print to the audio to get a feel for both.
Three stars.
OMG this book! I was so excited to get approved for the audio on this and once I started listening I DID NOT WANT TO STOP. This book is so twisted and gave me major "I'll be watching you/You vibes". Daniel is a sociopathic and delusional stalker who has a strangle hold on Noelle. She arranges her own kidnapping to get herself away from him. However when she is kidnapped, she realizes that it's not the kidnappers she hired. At first I thought this was unbelievable but as the story goes on it's starts to unravel and it's SO GOOD. There's not much more I can say without giving it away, but I would highly recommend this suspenseful domestic thriller.
Thanks to Bookouture and Bookouture Audio for access to the ARC and audiobook
This book was a really great thriller! I read it in an afternoon as I couldn't put it down. It is told by both Noelle and Daniel's point of views which I loved as you get both sides of the story. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
This book was very good and quick. It was an easy quick read. I will be happy to pick up other books by this author
This was a gripping, psychological thriller with a killer twist ending. Told from the perspective of the 2 main characters, which keeps the pages turning as you want to find out what happens with each. I enjoyed the story and the twists.

Dr Daniel Ashcroft was perfect: handsome, romantic, protective. I thought I was so lucky.
But then I heard the rumors about his previous girlfriend, that she had vanished without a trace. That’s when I found the cameras in my apartment.
I was trapped. Daniel made it clear I couldn’t leave him, not without risking everyone I loved. I had to disappear, so I arranged my own kidnapping.
I should have known Daniel would never let me get away that easily. But he could never have predicted what I’d do next…
AMAZING! Thank you for this advanced copy. Let's start at the cover...love it! Drew me in right away. Being someone that works in the criminal justice system, I just constantly grew irritated and appalled by Daniel's behavior. I cannot stand entitlement. The author did a great job of portraying a DV victim and perpetrator. I loved Noel's character. She wasn't going to take it anymore! Loved the events in this book as far as Noel getting back at Daniel. Did not care for Carrie. Once Justine announced Daniel was not the problem, I immediately had the book figured out, but it was still a great layout of events to the end. Can't wait for more by her!.
Sadly not what I thought it was going to be. The premise was good, but the story fell flat for me right from the beginning. Apparently, this book wasn't for me.
Make Me Disappear by Jessica Payne
Noelle seems to have it all, an anesthesiologist boyfriend Danielle who enjoys Friday night date nights at their restaurant and who works at the hospital where she is a nurse...why is she paying someone to get herself kidnapped then? In a book full of twists and turns, the reader is taken on a wild ride that you could never predict.
I went in thinking this was just another book about a controlling man and a submissive woman, but it turned out to be much more than that. The story was told in such a way that constantly kept the reader guessing, and it was all tied up with a bow by the end. I do feel like perhaps the story became somewhat unbelievable at time (like shacking up with the person who is your kidnapper?!), but I don't think that that took over for the whole theme of the book. Overall I truly enjoyed the story, and it kept me up at night wanting to finish.
Thank you to the Bookouture as well at NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I just finished the debut novel “Make Me Disappear” and while this book will not be for everyone due to trigger warnings, it was a fast-paced domestic thriller that is worth the read if you will not be triggered by gaslighting or domestic abuse.
The main character, Noelle, realizes that her boyfriend is not who she thinks he is and begins to make plans on how she can escape him and their relationship. There are a few plot holes and I guessed the plot twists, but it was still a good read.
Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture for allowing me to read this book ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.
This is the authors debut novel and WOW what a story.
The pace of this book raced along as did my heartbeat whilst reading. A brilliant storyline that kept me hooked from start to finish. I very much look forward to her next book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC for an honest review. It was an absolute pleasure.
What a fantastic debut novel! I finished it in just a few hours because I couldn’t put it down. The story centers on Noelle, a nurse who thinks she has found the man of her dreams when she starts dating Daniel, only too find out he is a controlling narcissist. She goes to great lengths to escape him, only to find out that he might not be the only person in her life to fear.
The book moved at a fast clip and I enjoyed that it took place primarily in Seattle, where I live. Noelle did some silly things when she was trying to escape but I actually found that a little endearing, as it showed that she was just a regular person in an impossible situation who was doing the best she could. There were twists galore in this book and it was difficult to figure out who to trust. I figured out one twist but not the reason why until it was revealed, and others were surprises. The author also wrote Daniel’a character perfectly and made him easy to hate, with his chapters brimming with control and arrogance.
All the lose ends were tied up and I thought the ending of the book worked well. I was surprised it was the author’a first book and cannot wait to read her next one. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Stunning debut from a new-to-me author. A woman desperate to escape her narcissistic, abusive boyfriend agrees to be kidnapped to get away from him. What could go wrong? Everything! This is one twisted tale which keeps you guessing all the way through. I could not put it down!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC!
Read this synopsis and tell me you aren’t instantly intrigued:
By the time I realized the truth about Daniel it was too late. But the truth about me? He never saw that coming…
Make Me Disappear by Jessica Payne was wild! Noelle is a nurse and her boyfriend is a doctor, they work at the same hospital. In the beginning, Noelle is thrilled to have such a wonderful, handsome boyfriend but soon into their relationship, he starts becoming controlling, down to putting cameras in the house. Noelle knows she must get away from this guy but HOW? He is literally watching her every move.
She needs to do something drastic and unexpected. She needs to outsmart the man who has full access to every detail of her life. She needs to disappear…
This is a fun and wild ride of a book! It comes out on May 16.
Wow, what did I just read??? I cannot stop thinking about this book that deserves more than 5 stars!!! Noelle is a nurse who is dating an anesthesiologist at the hospital. All is great for a while until she realizes how manipulative and controlling he is, not to mention his strange relationship with his mother. He tells her she will never get away from him so Noelle has to come up with a plan to disappear. I loved how the pages just flew by as I was reading and sitting on the edge of my seat. I loved this book and I cannot wait until Author Jessica Payne comes out with another book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this spine-tingling book that kept me up well past my bedtime.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher @bookouture for allowing me to read an e-arc of this book!
I’ve been trying to read e-books here and there so when I was browsing Netgalley this one caught my eye. Plus I’ve been seeing raving reviews on it so this was a Bookstagram made me read it book and it was really good!
Noelle is dating a surgeon, Daniel and just knows it’s too good to be true. Then she learns one of his past girlfriends went missing and she also discovers cameras all over her apartment. She knows leaving him will be dangerous to everyone she loves so she decides to hire someone to kidnap her. Sounds good already right?!
I really enjoyed the set up of this book. It’s told in alternating povs and one of those views is from Daniel himself. That gives this book total You by Caroline Kepnes vibes and I was all for it! Normally I don’t like books that are far-fetched and this one is….but I really enjoyed it and it was a super entertaining read. The plot is twisty, fast-paced and I never saw the ending coming.
This one is releasing May 16 and is an unputdownable psychological thriller!
Make Me Disappear by Jessica Payne is a psych thriller that you think will be about one thing but actually goes in a completely different direction.
In other words, it lives up to the promise of the “twist you won’t see coming.” Sometimes those promises are not fulfilled, but in the case of this psych thriller, it meets the standard.
Noelle is in a bad relationship. We know that right from the prologue. Just how bad, however, unfolds over several chapters. It takes a while to realize just how awful the situation is. The author does a great job of keeping the tension building.
Instead of being a damsel in distress, however, Noelle is a thinker, and she makes a plan to escape.
And that’s where everything really lets loose, and the action gets more interesting.
There are revelations that have bearing on the events (or do they) and you think you know who is controlling the entire thing (you won’t).
I thought the entire plot was well-done as it kept me guessing and second-guessing all the way through to the very end.
I especially liked the author’s writing style. The story is largely Noelle’s and chapters alternate between the present the year or so leading up to the events that make up the main plot of the book. The “past” chapters are clearly marked with timeframes, so pay attention to those.
Every so often, there is a chapter from Daniel’s point of view. Those are deliciously creepy and enforce why Noelle feels the need to escape.
But, if you’re paying attention, you’ll realize there is actually more to Daniel than meets the eye. He’s…complex. That’s all I’m saying on that.
Once Noelle goes on the offensive, there are a few events that push the limit of belief, but I didn’t mind ignoring what would happen in reality. By that point, I was so invested that I they could have turned it into a totally different novel, and I would still have finished it.
In other words, I definitely wanted to see the end result no matter what else happened in between.
Make Me Disappear is a debut novel from Jessica Payne. If it is any indication of future stories, I look forward to reading them!
I'll start by saying I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I had extremely high hopes for this because the synopsis is captivating and inviting. Ultimately, the idea of a woman faking her own kidnapping to get away from an abusive partner was an incredible concept! Unfortunately, the execution did leave something to be desired.
Both the plot and the pacing are the high points of this novel! I thoroughly enjoyed how fast paced this was and I felt compelled to continue reading. The plot was engaging and continuous which I love in thrillers. My biggest issue is that I felt like the author took too much on. The idea itself is fairly simplistic but when you add in all of the nitty-gritty details, it becomes very jumbled. Perhaps if the ending had been a bit more surprising, I could have ignored that, but the ending itself was quite...underwhelming. I briefly considered the "plot twist" while I was reading, and I'm surprised I got it right because I had started to doubt myself, but that wasn't the issue. The issue itself is that it feels like the author is trying to paint our suspect as the victim, which I never like in stories of clear abuse/manipulation.
Overall, this was a good read, but nothing special.
I enjoyed this read!! The story revolves around a woman who fakes her one kidnapping to get away from her abuser. The multiple POV was very well done and really kept the story going. The ending was unexpected!!
For a novel debut, this book was good! The dual povs added more tension and suspense to the story. I gotta admit that I hated Daniel most part of the time: he and his perfect and handsome facade, the way he controled and manipulated Noelle, how he wanted to tie her to him...
The plot twists were good, some things I didn't see them coming and I was surprised and delighted. I read this book in one sitting, which was good!
