This book was very well written and yes, it had me on the edge of my seat. This was in deed dark and twisty.
Setting is in the Pacific Northwest, Seattle area. Noelle is a nurse and Daniel is an anesthesiologist working in the same hospital. After a year of dating Noelle had seen several signs of a controlling personality from Daniel. Having just come out of an abusive relationship where she had to move to get away she was hesitant with a relationship with Daniel but he had his ways of threatening her in a roundabout way. There was Eve, Daniels mother also involved in their relationship. Daniel seemed to have an unhealthy relationship with her always trying to be the best and pleasing in her eye. Then there was Kari, Noelle's cousin who just lost her mother and Noelle felt Daniel may have had something to do with it.
Noelle trying to get away from Daniel had placed an order to have herself kidnapped from a company that will do it for pranks and such. She thought this was a way to keep Kari safe and disappear and start a new life, but everything goes wrong! Where is Daniels last girlfriend, Sarah? How did her Aunt pass away when she was told the surgery should have gone well?
So much happening and when you think you know, you don't!
What a captivating book and hard to put down,
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Bookouture and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
A fabulous thriller, action packed and fast paced. You’ll be guessing throughout.
Really liked the multiple points of view. Very action-packed read with most chapters hanging on a cliffhanger. Seemed slightly repetitive at times, and I was hoping for a different kind of ending. Still a really enjoyable read. Would definitely recommend.
This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good thriller!!
Absolutely loved the characters, the plot, the tension - impossible to put it down.
Certainly recommended!
Wow! Chef's kiss to Jessica Payne on what I can't believe is her debut novel, psychological thriller Make Me Disappear! This one gave me serious YOU vibes and went in a completely different direction than I anticipated (given that I read mostly thrillers, this is always impressive to me). Dr. Daniel Ashcroft is apparently the perfect man - or is he? Noelle arranges her own kidnapping to escape Daniel - But from there, everything gets even more twisted. The plot is original, the characters are interesting and leave you wanting more, and the chapters from Daniel's POV (In addition to Noelle's) will keep you turning the pages late into the night. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next! Thank you Netgalley & Bookouture for an eARC in exchange for my honest review of this book.
This had the potential to be a lot better than it actually was.
On one hand the premise was quite unique you could feel the anxiety of the main character and everything was moving fast which I liked.
But the characters hardly feel real.
The whole "I can’t get away cause he’ll ruin everything I love" concept has never been done in a realistic enough way and even tho this is one of the better done ones, the way the author chose to perfectly round every plot point it doesn’t work out as well as it normally should here.

Whoa. This story was wild and contained many twists and turns. It is told from 2 POVs, in the present as well as in the not-so-distant past.
Our MC, Noelle, feels trapped in her relationship with her well-loved, well-known anesthesiologist boyfriend, Dr. Daniel Ashcroft. She is concerned about the disappearance of one of his ex-girlfriends and fears for her own safety. Dr. Ashcroft wants to protect Noelle, in his own super-weird, manipulative and gaslighting ways. He sees her as his perfect match, if only she would just submit herself to him wholly and marry him and make lots of babies.
Noelle doesn’t want to spend another moment with him when she learns he may have had something to do with her aunt’s death. So, she decides to hire someone to kidnap her to escape her life with Dr. Ashcroft.
This book was quite a ride!! I enjoyed it so much and felt connected to Noelle and her plight to get away from her boyfriend.
Dr. Daniel Ashcroft reminded me so much of Joe from YOU, all of his chapters have him speaking in the second person, directly to Noelle. I laughed a few times at the similarities between these two male characters.
All in all, a few things were a tad predictable but not so much that I didn’t enjoy the story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 out of 5 stars (rounded up for Goodreads)
I think you’ll enjoy this twisted thriller if you like:
🖤 Psycho male characters with extreme mommy issues
🖤 Strong female lead characters who will stand up for themselves and their loved ones
🖤 books like Gone Girl, which I loved!!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Bookouture, for early access to this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this one for the most part. I would give it 4 our of 5 stars. It was really good in the beginning. It pulled me in within first few chapters. Middle got a little slow then picked up towards the end.
"By the time I realized the truth about Daniel it was too late. But the truth about me? He never saw that coming."
Synopsis: Dr Daniel Ashcroft was perfect: handsome, romantic, protective. I thought I was so lucky. But then I heard the rumors about his previous girlfriend, that she had vanished without a trace. That’s when I found the cameras in my apartment. I was trapped. Daniel made it clear I couldn’t leave him, not without risking everyone I loved. I had to disappear, so I arranged my own kidnapping. I should have known Daniel would never let me get away that easily. But he could never have predicted what I’d do next.
Personal Review: 4 Stars
Debut Darling Jessica Payne's novel "Make Me Disappear" brought all the psychologic thrills and chills vibes - which has been my current GO TO genre. Fans of Gone Girl and YOU (the show & book) will adore this highly addicting novel. Even though I guessed whodunit at 50 percent, the author still had my reading into the night, because I had to know...WHY!? I loved the whole concept of a hire-for-kidnap company, and the plot twist that went along with that aspect. The multiple points-of-view were interesting to get inside the head of Daniel and Noelle. I loved Noelle as a character and how she turned from victim to sabotaging Daniel's entire existence from his coveted car, to "their" dinner spot, his house...I loved the shenanigans that caused him to unravel. Daniels chapters brought all the Joe Goldberg feels, who I ADORE, because there is something fundamentally wrong with me. Daniel is an undeniable stalker, which is the whole premise of this novel, but I couldn't help but like him at certain parts of the book as he tried to play the white knight! This book was fast paced, with short chapters, multiple POV, and deeply entwined issues that keep you on the edge of your seat the entire novel.
I am leaving you with one of my favorite quotes from the book, " You are playing with fire, my love. Don't mind me while I turn up the heat," - Payne.
When Noelle finds herself in a relationship with a controlling sociopath she truly can't think of a way out, until she hears about a company that as a prank will kidnap you. As she's planning her escape someone beats her to the chance and she's kidnapped for real and has to fight back to figure out who to trust and how to get her life back. An incredibly fast paced thriller, the chapters are short and the movie although it goes between flashbacks and current times moves along really quickly. At the beginning I was very into it but the plot really started to get a little too out there for me and was hard to stay as invested.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow! This incredible physiological thrilling is un-put-downable! Written from various timelines and perspectives, it was cleverly interwoven and excellently told.
Thanks you NetGalley for the ARC of Make Me Disappear.
Jessica Payne nailed this thriller. As a thriller lover, reading the synopsis I knew I had to read this novel.
I got some major "You" vibes sprinkled with so many twists and turns, it was unputdownable (is that even a word?). Anyways, I loved Noelle's tenacity to get away from Daniel, and I loved that she didn't give up - such an epic strong female character!
At so many points you questioned who to trust, who was behind the events, and who was going to come out on top. I had my ideas on the ending and was semi correct. All in all, read this book. Do it.
this is the author's first book and what a good one to once i started did not want to stop so addictive. Noelle s last relationship was not good he was abusive she moved to her Aunt to get away. she has a very close relationship with her cousin Kari. Noelle is a nurse and she meets Daniel at the hospital. he is very rich and she starts to fall in love but Daniel is a controller. and he has put cameras in her apartment he knows her every move and her Aunt dies Noelle sees an advertisement get yourself kidnapped and contacts them that's all i going to say. but who can Noelle trust. i so cant wait to read more from this author
I read "Make Me disappear" in a few days. The writing made you want to turn pages. It even got scary at the end, which is difficult to do for a frequent thriller reader. This is a book about messed up people doing messed up things, which is what a psychological thriller should be. The book is told from dual perspectives, the main one being that of Noelle, who is an RN running away from an abusive relationship straight to another abusive relationship. The second perspective is of Daniel, who is the second boyfriend. What I liked besides the writing and plot was the setting of The Pacific Northwest. The book's pacing was also on point...
What I didn't like about the book were the characters. Noelle makes one poor decision after another. She gets annoying after a while. The author portrays Noelle's relationship with her sister very well. The book portrayed Daniel as a sociopath, which is fine, but I would have liked some nuance in his character. I think this book will appeal to women more than men because of the strong female vibe and subject of emotional abuse. I am a woman reader. There are triggers for mental illness (which I had problems with) and while the ending was exciting, it also lacked shade and nuance. I give this book a solid 3 stars out of five for the plot, suspense, setting, and writing. I look forward to the author's next project.
What a fantastic debut - I was hooked right from the start! Just when Noelle thought that she'd found her own McDreamy, she finds out the dream is actually a nightmare.
I really liked the way this was told, with the differing viewpoints from Noelle & Daniel. Noelle was such a great character, and I was cheering her on & hoping that she would succeed. Daniel was the perfect villain - his chapters revealing the narcissistic sociopath that hid behind a charming facade. I was eagerly turning the pages with this story - was Noelle going to escape or was Daniel going to find some way to win? I can't wait to read what Jessica Payne puts out next!
Wow this thriller was really amazing. I loved how it started right in the middle of the drama and it gives the reader a lot of before and after situations. Starting the way that it did really pulled the reader in quickly because I'm not used to there being so much information expressed so quickly. I think that it was an amazing way to write it and something that a lot more authors should look into doing. I was amazed that this was Jessica Paynes first novel because a lot of times you can tell that the author is getting used to the genre and figuring out their writing styles however this book was done flawlessly that you would think that this author
has been doing it forever and this is just another one to add to the long list of previous works. This book was told through two different points of view our main character Noelle and Daniel. Noelle is in an abusive relationship with with Daniel and after trying everything she can to escape she goes to drastic measures and fakes her own kidnapping. That is the only way that she knows that Daniel won't get her however when the kidnapping becomes real she doesn't know who to turn to or if she just put herself in more danger than she was in in the first place. The book also flips and is told through Daniel's point of view. Now at first I wasn't sure how I would like seeing the point of view of an abuser however it really progressed the story and gave you an even darker side to what was happening. It showed what a monster Daniel really was and him trying to justify his actions to himself and his sense of superiority over others was outstanding. I was impressed with the authors ability to write such different characters that not only fit together and complemented each other well in the story but was able to do so so convincingly that you really believed that they were jumping right off the page in front of you. This book was amazing and I'm really glad that I got the chance to check it out. The ending was amazing and never in a million years would I have guessed what was going to happen. Great read that will leave you talking and pondering how you could have missed it.
Jessica Payne’s debut twisty thriller is about a woman in a controlling relationship—he tracks her location, demands she wear certain clothes, and is obsessed with his flashy car and luxurious lifestyle. It had me hooked after the first few chapters and I loved the fast pace and short chapter length.
This is a contained thriller in the relationship-thriller space that isn’t too dark. It has a limited amount of characters and is easy to follow and get wrapped up in. I found that with a little suspension of disbelief, the book swept me onto a wild ride with kidnapping, creepy partners, and chase scenes! Can’t wait to read her next book!
I have a multitude of internet friends who continuously urge me to get on this site called Netgalley. Netgalley is a website that is for avid readers to read upcoming releases and review them. So essentially, it’s what I already do except all in one place. I didn’t really see the value, but every now and then I hop on over there and check out what’s available to everybody. I don’t have access to the most popular books because I just don’t use Netgalley often enough, but this one book that looked appealing was a book anybody to get, so I got it.
At the beginning of this book, we meet Noelle, a nurse, who is dating a narcissistic doctor named Daniel. Daniel has his life planned out, seemingly day to day, and he has decided Noelle is going to be the woman by his side. Noelle is less than thrilled and is trying to figure out how to remove herself from Daniel with her dignity, and her life, intact. Evading the cameras in her apartment, and the tracker on her phone, and the spying Daniel does on her computer, she plans to get herself kidnapped and simply disappear (much like one of Daniel’s previous girlfriends, except she was murdered). Noelle’s plans go horribly awry, and she discovers she has not one, but two adversaries.
This book had twists and the literary equivalent of jump-scares all over the place. It was a fast-paced read and a thoroughly satisfying thriller. There was drama and intrigue, betrayal, and some of the most well-written misogynistic narcissism I have ever read. Daniel’s sections of the book are creepy as hell. Seriously, it felt like Payne might have some intimate knowledge of that type of person. You doing alright Jessica? Need a hug? Blink twice if you feel unsafe.
I didn’t love the book’s format. I find myself increasingly frustrated with the back-and-forth between points of view writing. It was good every now and then, but lately it feels like EVERYBODY is writing this type of format and I’m just bored with it. I also get bored with the “air of mystery” that ends each chapter. Yes, we are aware this is a suspenseful thriller, we don’t need tension builders every three pages. I found it to be annoying, redundant, and over the top.
It was a decent book but fell short of that fifth star because of the format. I do, however, highly recommend reading this one if you dig suspense.
Wow this was a cracker of a book! I this one hooked me from the beginning and did not ever let go. The tension, hopes, dreams and failures were just icing on the cake. Perfect characters that made me a part of the story.
Highly recommend
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book
I really wanted to love this book and I started it and was fully emerged. It quickly fizzled into a long drawn out back and forth anticipation of he said she said and her fight just fell a bit short for me. I just couldn’t find myself to really like the main character Noelle. She seemed tedious and almost whiney even though she had every right to be. For someone who reads alot in this genre the big reveal wasn’t as ohhh ahhh as I anticipated and I guessed it a bit early on which may have been more of a meh factor. It wasn’t bad by any means it was just… eh.
Noelle has a boyfriend named Daniel who is super controlling. They have dinner at the same fancy restaurant every Friday and he has this whole future planned for them. Her aunt died and she blames him for it. He has a girlfriend who dispearred before. She wants out. She hears about kidnapping for hire like they do for a birthday or just for kicks and hires herself to be kidnapped. Things go wacky and the story commences into the thrill of it all.
You get Noelle’s point of view from before she realized Daniel was horrid to the present. Then you get Daniels point of view of how obsessed he is with her. It just felt like the characters were just so forced and not as fluid or realistic. Yes, I know it’s a book but it was too fantasy for my liking if that makes sense.
Thank you to Bookouture and netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
