This is such a good domestic thriller. It is creepy in places. The level of coercive control is outstanding. The ending is very unexpected
A great read, full of twists and turns. Some really good twists! I was gripped all the way through. Looking forward to reading more from the author!
A very enjoyable read , full of unease and an addictive pacing all the way through. I loved this authors previous book and this one was just as much of a page turner from start to end. I loved how I had no idea where the story was heading and the twist at the end was just so satisfying and cleverly done!
Amazing !!! This was such a great read I couldn’t put it down ! The characters well developed and great story !!!! Perfect read ! Clear your schedule as you will not want to stop !!!!!
This was the perfect thriller which I binged in the space of a few days. One I plan to recommend and share with friends as well as refer to as one of my favs from this month!
A gripping fast paced read, I couldn't put it down!
This was such a good book, so many twists and turns - absolute page turner from the beginning to end.
In recovery from a terrible trauma, Lauren is helped to heal by handsome therapist, Paul, who has his own trauma: the death of his beloved wife, Emma from cancer, leaving him a single parent to Margo and Jesse.
Lauren and Paul end up falling in love, and Lauren moves in with her new ready made family. And when Paul receives an offer they can't refuse - a country house, rent free for the next year - it seems that life is finally coming together for them all.
But although the house sounds perfect, it's not long before Lauren starts to feel claustrophobic. There is nowhere for her to go in walking distance of the house, Paul is constantly questioning her whereabouts, and Jesse is struggling. Can Emma trust Paul? And what did happen to his first wife?
I really enjoyed this well paced domestic thriller, and although it's the first book I've read by this author, it won't be the last. Well-realised characters, an ever pervasive sense of menace, and a creeping sense of dread make for an enjoyable and memorable novel.
Thank you to NetGalley, and to the publisher, who granted me a free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
perhaps not the gripping read i had hoped, but still wanted to discover what was going on. will read her other books now a good premise that whilst not cheery kept you reading
A classic thriller that leaves the reader wanting to keep reading, one to enjoy as the dark nights draw in and you’re looking for your next read
This is an author who I adored from her debut. As a result, this has been one of my most eagerly anticipated reads of the year.
What She Left Behind has a brilliant opening. There are a number of unsettling signs from the very beginning. Freud has filled this with mystery and suspense from very early on.
As a reader, this is claustrophobic but completely addictive and intriguing. This has been completely enthralling and a book I have devoured in just one sitting. The pages are filled with twisted truth, manipulation and control.
There have been completely unexpected elements to this book which have made me completely speechless. This is unpredictable and Freud has pulled the rug from under me.
What She Left Behind is dark and disturbing. Freud has written an unpredictable and clever masterpiece. I have devoured this gem, one sitting just this book and snacks.
The characters that fill the pages of this are mixed. You like some, you hate others. I have been completely caught up in the pages of this one. I already cannot wait to see what Freud is going to release next- she is definitely an author that doesn’t disappoint.
I loved this book so much, I really do think everyone should read it. This is a book worthy of all the stars. There is nothing to dislike about this one.
Yeah really dark this book was all that I wanted and more a phenomenal thriller that really kept me on my toes and I had me thinking. I couldn’t put it down. A phenomenal writer.
This book started off slow for me but really picked up which Im glad. I loved the setting. I did guess the ending but in no way did it affect my enjoyment of the book.
Emily Freud has bloody gone and done it. This book was amazing-so dark, and really fast paced. It was unputdownable, and I binge read it. So so good.
This was a great read.
A well written twisty story with interesting and well developed characters, I raced through it. Told through different timelines I was kept guessing with every page and although I did guess the ending, I wasn’t disappointed.
I’ll be looking out for this author from now on.
What a great book!
I picked this book up in between having an absolute crazy week at work and working late. It provided the escapism that I needed
I really couldn’t flick through the pages fast enough, curiosity was well and truly getting the best of me!
I was hooked from the very first page where we are introduced to Lauren; who is embarking on a fresh new start with her partner Paul and his children Jesse and Margo
It is clear from the getgo that all is not what it seems in this relationship. the author tackles the subject of controlling relationships amazing.
Full of secrets and suspense; we learn that all is not as it seems and at the end of each chapter, the author leaves the reader wanting more and more
I did guess the twist. But that did not alter my view of the book. Sometimes reading so much of this genre provides you with some of your own detective skills
I thoroughly recommend this book.
I loved Emily Freud’s previous book so I was really excited to read What She Left Behind and I’m pleased to say it totally lived up to my high expectations! The story follows Lauren, a young woman with a murky and traumatic past who is making a fresh start by moving to an isolated new home in the countryside with her partner, Paul, and his two young children. She thinks she’s won the jackpot with this readymade perfect family. However, things are not quite what they seem and as Lauren tries to adjust to her new reality she finds herself beginning to doubt whether Paul is really the kind of man she thought he was.
From almost the very start of What She Left Behind there is an ominous undercurrent present. Lauren is so unsure about how far she can trust her own mind and memories which puts the reader in the same boat. Something just feels off with the dynamic in this recently built family and the more we learn about Lauren and Paul’s history, the more unnerving their relationship feels. I was totally hooked and got completely invested in the dark and unsettling story as the truth slowly unraveled. I haven’t hated a villain as much as I did here in quite some time! What She Left Behind is a deeply compelling look at the dark side of psychology and the power of manipulation. I highly recommend this tension-filled thriller.
What she left behind by Emily freud
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"He gave her everything. But can she trust him?"
Ok so I’ll be honest I find thrillers and horrors very hit and miss . Mostly miss , sadly. But this , this was special . This was a hit of epic proportions. The kind of book you stay up until the early hours reading as it’s impossible to put down.
I even had a nightmare that I was in the story it hooked me that much !!
The story and characters are so vivid and the writing is phenomenal. This is my first read from Emily freud but it certainly will not be the last !
I really don’t want to give away any spoilers whatsoever but I promise you this should be the only thriller / mystery you buy this year!
Thank you NetGalley, Quercus Books and Emily Freud for letting me read "What She Left Behind" in exchange for an honest review.
Great plot to get yourself lost in. This book has everything. A real fast paced thriller. Will get your heart racing on more than one occasion. Very well written. Highly recommend this book
This is an addictive, menacing thriller filled with absolutely believable characters. It’s gripping, tense and chilling, a real page-turner with a marvellous and totally unexpected twist. Lauren has a seemingly idyllic life with her partner, Paul, and his two young children. But as Lauren struggles to live up to the image of Paul’s late wife, you soon realise that Paul, and the remote house they’ve all just moved into, holds many secrets. Very well written and addicting, I couldn't put it down!!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for approving me for this arc.
I really enjoyed this concept. Corry’s books are always really good
