I've raised chickens my whole life, so I was curious about how I'd like this book. I think it has some really good tips and tricks for beginners and is really helpful!
A great guide for beginners. I was thrilled when I received this because we are moving to some land in a few months and the plan was always to have chickens. But I know (knew) nothing. This was a great guide to help me and guide me in the direction I needed to go so I didn't feel completely helpless!
Raising Chicken for Beginners might seem like a basic book but it is so much more. It's very comprehensive and covers EVERYTHING from knowing are you ready to take care of a flock, what breeds are best suited for your area, what supplies are needed, how much of a budget is needed, what size coup to build, and how to keep your flock healthy, etc.
A beneficial book and really a must for anyone who is thinking about raising chicken for the first time. There is a lot to know! Like all animals they are living beings and a lot can go wrong.
The format is all it can be and more. It's laid out in such a user-friendly format that even the font is perfect. Need to know what egg binding is? This book has it and more. Truly if anyone is considering raising chickens read this first. Also, highly recommended for libraries and I can imagine a highly used reference book while issues while raising chicken comes up.
5 Stars! This is a MUST READ for anyone considering getting chickens. Anything and everything you’d want or need to know about raising chickens is in this book. The good, bad and, possibly, smelly! I 100% recommend reading this book before you invest in raising chickens!
*I received this at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
I read a slightly differen version of this a couple of months ago, and since then I added two chicks to our household. This book has been invaluble in preparing me for the little fluffballs. It is an incredibly informative, accessible book to guide readers (like myself) who don't know much at all about backyard chooks.
The book covers everything from the setup needed and recommended breeds to chicken behavior, egg troubleshooting and poop scooping, plus how to look after chickens in all sorts of extremes..
The author has clearly done their research, and enjoys raising chickens - a fact that comes across well in the writing. I will keep referring back to this one as I raise my chickens
~Many thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review~
Wow! This book has it all! If you are interested in becoming a chicken keeper, this book is for you! It has everything from choosing chicken breeds, coop requirements, what to feed, how to care for sick and injured birds, and even what to do in emergency weather situations. I have never seen such a well researched chicken keeping book as this one. It’s a great resource to have on hand! I especially appreciated the chapter on feeding. I also personally agree with the beginner breed choices as the Dominique is my favorite breed! Thank you so much to Net Galley, the publisher, and author for providing a copy of this book for my honest review. I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy!
As a chicken owner, I was impressed by this brief book on getting started in the world of chickens. I have read several books about chicken keeping, and when I first got started I was overwhelmed by all of the information some of the books contained. This book is different in that it really only presents the information you absolutely need to know in order to get started. I found it to be well written and accurate. The only thing I would change about the book would be to add more visual content - photos, illustrations, or charts, simply because I really appreciate that kind of content in a nonfiction book. Overall, I would rate this quick read as very helpful to the new chicken owner.
Raising Chickens for Beginners is an accessible and easy to understand guide to succeeding with a backyard flock written and presented by Otis Banks. Released 30th June 2021, it's 146 pages and is available in ebook format. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
This is a very basic, no frills book which is short on glossy photos and unnecessary graphics but which is complete, information dense, and sufficient to get started in poultry keeping. The author presupposes no previous knowledge, and all new terms and concepts are explained well in the text. The chapters progress from first thoughts about keeping backyard chickens, through considerations (legal, local, space, costs, etc), to building coops (no specific plans are included, but there are some photos for inspiration), acquiring a flock, and keeping them healthy and happy.
The book contains a useful links/resources list which, though suited to a North American audience, is useful to poultry keepers in other areas. There is also an index after the resources section.
Final verdict, very entertaining and interesting book, well written and on-topic, and fighting the good fight against misinformation and disappointment. This would be a good choice for public or school library acquisition, and for readers wishing to increase their food security and self-sufficiency. It would also be a good choice for allotment/garden group libraries, activity groups, scouting, and 4-H. The scope of the book is probably to narrow to make it an appropriate choice for smallholders or farmers. It's mostly for suburban/hobby/pet chicken enthusiasts.
Four stars
