Hunter and his girlfriend Chloe are driving home from the Homecoming Dance when they have an accident and smash into a tree. Hunter wakes up in the hospital that night, not remembering anything from the the accident, but is told that Chloe is missing and nowhere to be found. Everyone thinks Hunter has something to do with Chloe’s disappearing, so he decides to investigate the disappearance on his own. Did Hunter have something to do with Chloe missing? Or is someone else involved here?
I have read almost all of David Bell's books and I am a huge fan, I absolutely LOVED this book! From beginning to end, I was fully engaged and couldn't wait to see what happened next. I usually don't read many Young Adult books, but this one was exceptionally good. The pacing was great and I enjoyed the short chapters. I am looking forward to seeing what David Bell comes up with next. Highly recommend!

Although Hunter has no memory of the night he and Cloey had a car crash, he knows he would never hurt her. He begins investigating on his own and is determined to clear his name. He finds out some ugly truths along the way to learning the truth. Very entertaining read!

SHE'S GONE was a thrilling YA mystery. Hunter Gifford wakes up in the hospital on the night of homecoming with no recollection of getting into an accident with his girlfriend Chloe Summers. He is horrified to learn that while Chloe's blood was found in the car, there is no trace of her anywhere. Suffering from a pretty severe concussion that has left gaping holes in his memory, Hunter is desperate to find out what happened to the girl he loves.
This mystery has SO many layers, from the friend who was making his own homemade true crime documentary about the case, to the dark history of someone in both Hunter and Chloe's lives, everything intersected into one shocking, heartbreaking finale.
What I found so true to life about this book was the mob mentality was done so well. Everyone thought Hunter had done something to Chloe, especially her parents, and the descriptions of how Hunter was vilified and ostracized were on point.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for this early read that will publish November 1, 2022.
She's Gone follows Hunter who wakes up in the hospital to learn that on the night of homecoming he and his girlfriend Chloe got into a terrible car accident. Hunter has no memory of the crash and is shocked to learn that Chloe has disappeared. Back at school everyone taunts him and thinks he murdered Chloe. While Hunter is trying to piece together everything his former best friend makes a true crime documentary about Chloe and Hunter. But then he turns up dead and murdered. Now the police are starting to think that Hunter killed both Chloe and his best friend. Did Hunter really kill them or is someone trying to frame him?
This was a really good YA mystery / thriller. I liked the overall writing style ( very short chapters) and how the story flowed. I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I did not see that plot twist at the end coming. I love how you never knew who to trust in this one. Also, I think this is a very fast read. Overall, it had everything you would want in a mystery/thriller book. This book made me want to read more books by David Bell. Overall, I enjoyed this one and I would suggest it. Thank you so much NetGalley, David Bell, and Sourcebooks Fire for the ARC of this book.

Suspense novelist David Bell already has an established career as an adult fiction writer. In She's Gone, Bell's debut into young adult literature, Hunter Gifford wakes up in the hospital with no memory of what happened after he and his girlfriend, Chloe, left their homecoming dance. He can't remember why the car crashed or who dropped him off at the hospital. And he can't remember what happened to Chloe. Is she somewhere out there, injured and in need of help? Was she kidnapped? Is she dead?
Since Hunter is the last person seen with Chloe before she disappeared, he becomes the prime suspect, and Chloe's mother publicly accuses Hunter of not being honest with the police, saying that he has something to hide. To make matter worse, one of Hunter's childhood friends is murdered after its revealed that he was investigating Chloe's disappearance. As more and more people start to point their fingers at Hunter, he is willing to do whatever it takes to find out what happened to Chloe and who is responsible for her disappearance, even if it means going to jail.
This book would appeal to fans of stories featuring unreliable narrators like Tess Sharpe's Far from You and E. Lockhart's We Were Liars.
The story begins with Hunter slowly recovering after a collision with a tree while driving with his girlfriend, Chloe, following their Homecoming dance. The car is totaled, the girlfriend is missing, and he remembers nothing. Public opinion of the town has largely turned against him, but Hunter is determined to prove his innocence and find out what happened to Chloe.
This started out strong, but lost some steam as it went along.
It’s a pet peeve of mine when Joe Schmoes are able to find clues and solve mysteries/crimes that have trained professionals stumped, especially when said Joes are not even old enough to vote. It just rings a little ridiculous to me.
But, I’m admittedly a very picky reader. I think plenty of people who enjoy YA and thrillers will appreciate this book.
Thanks to #netgalley and #sourcebooksfire for this #arc of #shesgone in exchange for an honest review.
I extremely enjoyed David Bells writing style, it was fast paced and extremely unpredictable. Hunters story made me want to keep reading so I could understand his full story. I would recommend and I can’t wait to read more of Bell’s work. Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!
This is one of the best YA thrillers I've ever read. David Bell wrote such a well written novel, a mystery of what happened to the main characters girlfriend Chloe, I never guessed any of the twists or what was going on. I loved how it wrapped up. A bit darker than expected but an amazing book. Can't wait for it's release
Wow. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
17 year old Hunter wakes up in the hospital with a concussion, a missing girlfriend and no memory of what happened!
His girlfriends parents, the kids at school, his community all think he is guilty
Everyone was a suspect to me I love the characters and the story. This is my first book by this author and it will not be my last
I did enjoy this book and thought the pacing was good, you can read it in one sitting as it is gripping. However I did find it predictable and repetitive in places
Oh. My. God. This book was a ride, in such a great way. Hunter wakes up in the hospital with amnesia from a concussion, only to find out his girlfriend, Chloe, is missing - and he's the main person of interest. Hunter does everything he can to help find Chloe, while the police and everyone in town are breathing down his neck - almost everyone thinks he killed Chloe, and even though he doesn't remember what happened the night she disappeared, he knows he'd never kill the girl he love. Now, he has to prove it to everyone else.
This books was very deeply emotional, and I loved getting to know Hunter, as well as getting to know Chloe through Hunter. The twist at the end made my stomach turn in disbelief, and I appreciate that I wasn't able to fully predict the ending. A very good read, and I'll definitely recommend it to others!
Thank you to @netgalley and @sourcebooksfire for this e-arc!
I’m a bit torn on my rating of this one. It’s YA so it’s more melodramatic than adult thrillers (minus), but it was intriguing from the get go (plus). The fact that it was a page turner made me stick with the 4 ⭐️ rating. I also did not guess the ending 😮
It’s written in 1st person, and the character is an unreliable narrator (memory loss, concussion). There’s even a creative writing teacher in the book who mentions that Hunter is the unreliable narrator of his own life haha.
The adults were the most unlikeable characters in this one. I loved the brother-sister relationship—Hunter’s sister did more to help him than his own father 😬
There were a LOT of typos that I hope they fix before publishing, but if you like YA thrillers I’d say pick this one up in November!
Amnesia an accident, a missing girlfriend. Our character Hunter could not be more confused. Why can't he remember the accident, and what happened to Chloe?
The characters, mystery and plot all come together bto create an exciting mystery.
A great read. Highly recommend.
A big thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Fire for providing me with a copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.
4,5⭐️ rounded up to 5⭐️
Thank you NetGalley, SOURCEBOOKS Fire and David Bell for providing me with and advanced readers copy of “She’s Gone” in exchange for my honest review.
David Bell is a new author for me. This is a YA mystery/suspense novel. I do enjoy a good ya book every now and then, it always feels comfortable and a bit like coming home. The book was fantastic and I will definitely be checking out more of his works!
So here is what I think:
Cover: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Ending: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2
Feelings after finishing: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The cover does not give away very much about the story. It looks like a chalkboard, repeating the name of the novel. It’s a good, but not mind blowing cover.
The story is about Hunter and his girlfriend Chloe. Homecoming, 17-years-old Hunter wakes up in the hospital after crashing a car into a tree. But what happened to Chloe? “She’s gone”… and Hunter gets the blame, online, at school… if only he could remember what happened that night.
It’s shocking how far people go in this novel. Hunters once best friends is filming a true crime documentary, Chloe’s mother accuses him publicly, Tik-tok videos being made. A modern witch hunt.
I enjoyed the characters in this book a lot more than I thought I would. Especially Hunter’s sister Olivia is awesome. The characters are well rounded and realistically written. The writing is fluent and the story gripped me from the beginning. I enjoyed the ending as well. It did not go how I thought it would. I like the route that the author went.
Awesome domestic suspense novel from David Bell. Thrilling, twisty, but with substance. A great addition to any thriller shelf!
I have read every David Bell novel, he’s an author I continue to add to my TBR every time I see a new book is coming. So I was extremely excited to see him writing a Young Adult (a genre I have just started to read more of) and getting pick to read an advanced copy. I tore through this book in 24 hours and I really enjoyed the twist at the end…. I thought I had it all
figured out. My favorite part was the relationship between the brother and sister and how they interacted throughout the book.
I love this author's other books, and his foray into YA mystery/suspense is equally successful. In "She's Gone", Hunter wakes up in the hospital after a car accident on Homecoming night with no memory of what happened. His girlfriend is missing, and her purse, shoes and phone are in his car. So is her blood. Everyone thinks Hunter did something to his girlfriend, and he questions himself when he learns he and his girlfriend were seen arguing at Homecoming. This is a twisty, gripping story with very believable and real teen characters.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, SOURCEBOOKS fire and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Riveting, suspenseful from that start. I didn’t put it down. The characters are enticing, the story is haunting. Make sure you have time freed to read this one.
I am not the correct demographic for this book, but I did enjoy the story. The authors storyline kept me engaged. The characters were well fleshed out. As a mother of boys there were a few times I wanted to shake Hunter. I loved the brother and sister bond between Hunter and Olivia. This is a great mystery for teens and young adults. The one small negative was story was a bit slow to start. Once the story started I had to find out what happened. I felt the ending was satisfying.
When 17 year old Hunter Gifford wakes in hospital on the night of homecoming hunter is shocked to learn that Him and his girlfriend Chloe Summers were in a terrible car accident which Hunter has no memory of the crash but his shock soon turns into horror when he is told Chloe’s blood has been found in the car but she has disappeared and back at school his fellow students taunt him and his former best friend starts making a true crime documentary about the case one that points the finger directly at hunter and Chloe’s mum stands in front of the entire town and accuses Hunter of murder so Hunter decides to do some sleuthing and he begins questioning anyone who might be able to help him find out what happened to Chloe
Really gripping read will keep you guessing till the end definitely recommend
