I really enjoyed this young adult thriller! David Bell's writing is easy to follow and interesting. Hunter and Chloe are high schoolers and they are head over heels in love with each other. On the night of the home coming dance they show up together and they leave together. But something goes wrong on the way home, there's an accident. Hunter wakes up in the hospital with no memory of what happened and Chloe is missing. Hunter is desperate to find out what happened to his girlfriend, but what if he just cant remember?
3.5
This is a very fast but well paced thriller that will leave the reader wanting to not put the book down. I think that Bell portraited a plausible and realistic teenager and their reactions when dealing with this situation. While the plot was enticing and I it kept me guessing to the very end, the let down was the ending itself. While subtle hints were left through out the novel the 'why' of it all felt untrue to the characters portrayed in the story and like it was done for the shock value. I also felt like it ended too quick to really feel resolved. Overall, this was a thrilling book that I couldn't put down but the ending left more to be desired. I would still recommend this to those who enjoy YA Thrillers or those wanting to dip their toe into the genre for the first time.
Thank you to Netgalley for a review copy, All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This one is a swift, catchy ride about a teenage boy accused of his girlfriend gone missing. The mystery is intelligently done. Hunter’s inner world and his struggle to live under the many pressures (his own amnesia after a car accident where Chloe got missing; police interest; strange and even accusative looks from the community and his own inner doubts) are portrayed believably. I get Hunter, his questions and his fight to understand what has happened. I loved the side character of Daniel, the nerdy ex-friend who might be more valuable than the present friends. And while I find the ending coming a bit fast, yet it is the quite logical conclusion to the mystery and when looking back, there are even clues pointing in that direction, which means thst the author has worked well with the setup (always a plus in my books!).
I usually love David Bell’s books but I am not a favorite of of YA books. It was well written but very lengthy. It had a good storyline but I suggest that this book should be read by YA and it was well written but not for me. I suggest that this book be read by YA and they will throughly enjoy this book.I usually love David Bell’s books but I am not a favorite of of YA books. It was well written but very lengthy. I enjoyed this book. There were so many questions that needed to be answered and I loved all the suspense and mystery surrounding the plot. Where did the girlfriend disappear to? What happened? I loved the story right to the very end. Highly recommend this one!
David Bell's 'She's Gone' is a well-written and thoughtfully crafted book that kept me engaged throughout. The story of Chloe's disappearance on prom night is shrouded in mystery and intrigue, and I appreciated the fact that I was unable to guess what had happened or who was involved. The way in which the story unfolds is well-paced and keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Speaking of the ending, it was a big surprise for me, and I found it to be a satisfying conclusion to the story. Overall, I really liked this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a compelling mystery with a satisfying payoff.
what a fantastic twisty YA thriller. COULD not put this book down. So very well done. THe writing keeps you on your toes and guessing right until the end
I recently found this author when I saw the title” Kill All Your Darlings” and I became intrigued by the title. I so loved that book so now I needed to find other works by David Bell. This book “She’s Gone” was a solid 3 1/2 for me, I realized it was a YA once I got into the book a bit. Now I do read YA so I continued on…I enjoyed a few of the characters but only a few stood out. It was definitely a pretty good plot but I think it all dragged on and on. I would recommend to my YA readers, and would hope they learned a few things of what not to do with social media. Thanks to Netgalley, Sourcebooks, and David Bell.
Have you ever been excited to read a book and then something about it makes you feel let down? That's how I felt with David Bell's She's Gone. This book has been on my reading list for a while now to read and one I have been excited about, but the ending and the way the book went just ruined it for me as it was like seriously WTF... This book starts with our main character Hunter waking up in hospital with amnesia and he learns that he crashed his car and his girlfriend Chloe is missing. The police it seems think that Hunter drove into the tree on purpose and killed Chloe and dumped her body somewhere. The thing though is that Hunter loved Chloe and knows that he could never hurt her, so where is she? During the book, he learns that maybe the girl he loved has been keeping secrets from him and those secrets might just have gotten her killed or kidnapped. Desperate for answers and to clear his name, Hunter makes a few videos throughout the book and goes on a journey of his own with his sister and her girlfriend's help to uncover the truth. What will happen though when the truth of where Chloe has been all along is revealed? The ending and the reveal of this book, I think annoyed me as it felt similar to Gone Girl and the way that the main female's disappearance played out with the husband being the main suspect and then the reveal that the husband is innocent or in this case Hunter is innocent and the real killer is someone who wasn't obvious at all or even a suspect at all during the book as how could they be since they aren't a big part of the book and then all of a sudden it's like wham bam - they were the killer all along. Endings like this annoy me personally, as I feel it a letdown after reading a great book and then it's like this is what happened and you are left going really and how and more importantly why???
It is the ending for me that was the deciding factor of this book getting a 3P rating rather than a 4P.
This was a little to YA for me. I really enjoy David Bell but this one was just not for me. I wish I could say more but it was a DNF
⭐⭐⭐
This was a quick and highly entertaining read. Was it predictable? Yes. Was it far-fetched? Yes. Did I figure out the entire plot from early on? Also yes...however, it still had me furiously turning the pages. 👍🏻👍🏻

I had a hard time taking this YA thriller seriously, especially since the protagonist kept doing questionable things over and over again despite being repeatedly told not to. Hunter was such a flat character that I didn't feel anything at all whenever he talked about Chloe. No wonder he's a murder suspect? He comes across as so... empty.
I just find a lot of the book hard to believe. The shady characters were easy to spot and it wasn't hard to guess things. The short chapters made this an easier read and there was suspense to some extent, but overall I was rather underwhelmed.
There is 'representation' but it felt like the author was just paying lip service and trying to score brownie points. Like characters are queer or non-white just to check off a diversity quota and not because any of it actually comes into play plot-wise.
Not an awful novel, just an average one that lacks depth in every sense.
This book. I haven't read meany thrillers lately but this one made me realize what I have been missing out on! We start off with Hunter waking up after a car accident left him unconscious and his girlfriend Chloe is no where to be found. He can’t remember what happened that night so everyone’s fingers point to him because hello? It’s always the boyfriend am I right? (Maybe, maybe not.) He ends up going back to school while CHloe is still missing hoping something will turn up that will help him remember what happened that night, but everything he’s told or finds out just makes him more confused about where should could possibly be. And it definitely doesn’t help when Chloe’s mom points her finger at poor Hunter in front of everyone.
This book had me guessing all the way to the end but I could not put it down, I had to know where Chloe was & what happened that night! By the time I got to the end I was *shocked*!
I definitely recommend this book if you love thrillers, it had me going up until the end! Thank you NetGalley & Sourcebook for this early copy. I loved it!
Thank you to Netgalley for the arc! All thoughts are my own!
Oh wow, this book totally took me by surprise!
Not sure exactly what it was, it just felt satisfying! The short chapters, mini cliffhangers, and plot twists, had me devouring this book (I read it over the span of around 3 hours)
The writing felt simple and easy which worked well for the book.
I did, however, find the ending too easy and I felt it didn't wrap up the story as nicely As I would've liked.
7/10, would definitely recommend, super entertaining!
David Bell is a great author and this YA mystery was no exception. I enjoyed trying to figure out the truth as the story developed. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
A gripping and suspenseful read!
Hunter Gifford and his girlfriend, Chloe Summers get into a car accident the same night as their homecoming dance. Hunter wakes up in the hospital but has no memory of the accident. In fact, most of the evening is a blur. Then he finds out that no one has seen or heard from Chloe.
She's gone...
Things quickly go from bad to worse.
Where is Chloe?
I've read quite a few of David Bell's novels and have enjoyed them. This is the author's first foray into Young Adult novels and I think he did a very good job. The story is told from Hunter's point of view. I really liked the short chapters. This was a quick, exciting, and enjoyable read.
I was able to switch back and forth between audiobook and eBook. The narration on the audiobook was very well done.
I look forward to reading more from David Bell!
I'd like to thank the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this novel. All opinions are my own.
4 stars. I enjoyed most of the book and wasn't expecting the ending, but I also feel like the ending was kind of boring. I wanted there to be more of a reason/mystery behind Chloe missing. It also felt kind of disconnected. Normally with a mystery there is something connecting things shown at the beginning that we don't know is a connection until later and I just felt like the teacher thing came out of nowhere.
SHE'S GONE is a well timed, well paced YA thriller that is appealing to adults! I enjoyed trying to solve the mystery of Chloe's disappearance, and found myself unable to put this down at several points throughout.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
I was immediately intrigued and drawn into this one. I loved the concept of Hunter being the last one with his girlfriend but having no idea what happened after the accident. I was invested in what happened and couldn't wait to find out where Chloe was.
That being said I felt the book could have moved at a slightly faster pace but I still recommend this one.
So, I liked the premise of this a lot, and it had a really strong start. YA thrillers like this are always a fun, quick way to spend a few hours.
I wasn't a huge fan of the ending as it felt just a bit too out of left field for me, but my biggest issue with this was the over-reliance of convenience as a plot device. I'm fine when mysteries and thrillers use coincidence from time to time, but when the very premise of your plot hinges on convenience (i.e. the narrator coincidentally not remembering the night his girlfriend went missing), you really can't rely any more on convenience to drive the plot forward.
But in this, there were so many times in which the main drivers of the plot hinged entirely on coincidence. An overheard conversation just happens to lead to a clue. A character just happened to record a video with just enough information to raise questions but not enough to answer the mystery. Characters just happen to be in certain places at certain times. It was too much for me to suspend my disbelief.
I think younger readers who haven't experienced a lot of mystery thrillers may be able to overlook this, but if you've read a lot of thrillers like I have, the use of convenience might be a bit too annoying.
