Creatively unique! Creatively witty! Creatively charming! Creatively memorable! Creatively unexpected!
The novel begins with writer Evie Howland frustrated by the clichés she’s written to begin Chapter 3 of the 16th book in her crime series. Is that what writer’s block does to an author? Thankfully Evie’s agent Jenna places a reminder telephone call as Evie has forgotten there is a party at the home of her future in-laws to attend with her billionaire fiancé Daniel Bradley.
A page-turning delight from the opening sentence to the end. Dime Sheppard’s author debut is bold and magically different. I simply loved it!
My sincere thanks to Dime Sheppard, and Ruby Books for my complimentary digital copy of this title, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect when going into this book as the plot could have been bland or uninspired. However, I can say with utmost certainty, that I loved every second of this book! Evie was an incredible character and the characters she wrote are even better. I loved the whole idea of this book and it did not disappoint. Edge of your seat action along with plenty of comedy and a little romance. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
This was a ??? Romcom thriller? Adventure book? It certainly was not a cozy mystery like I expected. It’s quick and easy and kind of a weird quirky thriller. Almost a cozy mystery, just not set in a cozy town and with hardly any of the Standard Tropes. It’s also kind of a little surreal, and there’s kind of a meta mystery going on top of the mystery. Not sure if I recommend this. Three stars? It’s possible that I’m not the intended audience.
If you like crime, mystery, authors, character development and discovery, as well as writing, you will love this book. This book has a turn of events that transforms what you previously thought about characters and how they impact the real world. It was refreshing and exciting.
I actually enjoyed this read more than I thought I would. I was a well written and liked the story too. A quick and easy mystery read.
I loved the concept of this book, especially as a writer myself, I could relate to so much that Evie internalized as she struggles to write her next novel.
The idea that characters can come to life, show up on our doorstep, and change our lives is one that is an original idea. There were times where I wasn't sure where the story was going, and it was almost like reading 2-3 books in one. Some parts I predicted, but overall the entire journey through the mind of a crime writer and her characters was great.
Remind me never to become a hermit when I'm writing my own stories.
A quirky thriller that was definitely a unique concept! In the book, Evie Howland is a best selling author of a famous crime series. Through a series of events, Evie finds that somehow, her characters have come to life and started to get involved with her plot lines- somehow becoming part of her real life. She thought she had the perfect life with her bestselling series, handsome fiancée, and wonderful characters to keep her company, but she Was having a hard time getting the next book written. She finds her own life turned upside down while ending up discovering and having to solve her own mystery! This book was action packed and played like a movie in my head. The characters were enjoyable and the dialogue was funny. My only critique is that the mystery unfolded with new pieces of information being thrown into the storyline constantly. There is no way to guess or anticipate what would or should happen next since the story breaks with reality and the plot line is fluid and invented along the way. I think this book would make a really fun action movie and should likely be classified as an action/thriller rather than a mystery novel. Overall an enjoyable read, but I got slightly tired of some of the action-packed scenes dragging on.
i’m extremely busy at the moment, so i don’t have much time to read arcs but i will come back and edit this with my actual review once i’ve read it! super excited!
Crime Writer was a brilliant read! It’s original, fresh and fast-paced. The writing style is refined, vivid and detailed, I was quite impressed with all the technical lingo as well, you could tell the author did her research and it made the tale very credible without turning it into a catalogue of boring jargon, which is usually easier said than done. As for the big villain, the Blade gave me a lot of “Red John” vibes from the Mentalist, maybe because he’s quite the ruthless character. Luckily, the author manages to keep the plot not too overwhelming for those, like me, who prefer cozy mysteries to gory thrillers.
Overall, I thought the plot was a great mixture of genres (thriller, romcom, action adventure) with many twists and turns to keep you riveted til the very end.
The storyline was extremely action-oriented and I could very easily picture it as a movie. Highly recommended!
This book was definitely an original concept for me! I really enjoyed that aspect of this story and would definitely read others like it as well! I had some good moments where I couldn't help but to laugh out loud! Witty books tend to have that effect on me. I'm a big fan of all three genres in here (romance, crime, and comedy)! It was definitely a lighthearted read, so don't go into this one expecting some big bad thriller book, because this will not hit that mark for you, my friends. The book was cute and I would recommend it if someone were to ask me about it!
I think the general idea of the book was original, or at least it's my first time reading a story like this. I loved that the book was witty, I chuckled a few times. I think it's a great mix of crime, comedy and romance. I definitely recommend it for people who are looking for something light hearted. I think the book might have had more attention with a better cover + marketing. Unfourtunately those things matter a lot.
Slow beginning to a fun book. Loved trying to solve the case and loved the humor and romance. Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
With narrator/author Evie Howland in charge, you know you're going to have a great story. After all, she has written 15 best selling books in a crime series. BUT her life is going great with her fiance, and her writing is blocked, and the 16th novel is due. Or past due.
Evie is thrown into a meta mystery, and she has to find a way to write her way out of the situation in real life while also addressing the mystery and struggle between her main characters NYPD Detectives Carolyn Harding and Jake Ryan.
A slow starting novel, the action increases its pace and the momentum will get you--if you aren't careful!
Evie is an author of a popular crime series. She’s having terrible writers block and her characters come to life to help her. Literally! Crime Writer was not at all what I expected. What a pleasant surprise! Action ✔️ Humor ✔️ Romance ✔️ It’s got everything I look for in a book and more. Enjoyable ride from start to finish!

A funny and entertaining mystery that kept me turning pages. I had a lot of fun, enjoyed the plot, liked the well developed characters.
The mystery is solid.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This was such a fun and unique mystery novel. We find our main character, Evie Howland, stuck at Chapter Three of her 16th mystery novel. We follow along, following both the real world and the fictional world of Evie’s book until the two ultimately collide. Suddenly, Evie finds her fictional characters in the real world and they’re causing real havoc.
There’s good character development and witty dialogue. This was a fast paced mystery with action, suspense, and romance. I’d never heard of Dime Shepard before reading this book, but I will definitely look for her other titles!
What a unique and original take on a crime novel. I was pulled in from the start. I thoroughly enjoyed the character development and the interesting way in which the characters are presented. Super engaging and fun.
Really enjoyed this read! It has a very interesting concept with an enjoyable execution. Evie is a fiction crime writer whose characters are popping up in the real world. While she likes the sudden appearance of her two favorite detectives, it also means that the immensely dangerous serial killer is loose in the real world. I enjoyed the characters and the flow of the book.
This is a mystery/thriller novel, in which we follow a crime writer. Unlike many books that follow authors I felt like this one is a breath of fresh air, and very captivating, however I'd preferred if some scenes didn't feel like they happened out of the blue, specially in action moments.
I did enjoy the way this book was written and the pace it had. So, I truly recommend it for any fans of thriller/mystery genre
Evie Howland is an author of a crime series. Her 15 books series were successful, but she experienced a writer's block while writing her 16th book. The block changed everything - her characters started to become real, people can see them and talk to them.
This is the first book of Dime Sheppard that I've read and I really like it. The realisation that her stories were happening in real life was very subtle. I did find myself getting lost between the 'real' and 'story' world, but it wasn't confusing and I realised which dimension it was within a few sentences. I really like how this book brings you from one dimension to the next and merges the two together - it truly lets you escape reality.
