Byrnes books are just too dark and twisty for me, too much violence, too much brooding, too much angst. This was no exception add it was good as far as it went, but just too dark,
This was okay...but i wished there was more to the characters. The story was just alright, not too amazing and not to wow, sadly.
I was forgetting how good Kerrigan Byrne's books are, the tempo, the simple chemistry that begins to build between her characters until it slowly dissolves, the scenes charged with emotion and fragility that paint vivid sensations, and so beautiful written...simply perfection
.
Crying Wolfe is the fifth story in the series about the Goode siblings, a stepfamily of sisters and a brother who try to adhere to social rules but don't hesitate twice before discarding them to go for what they feel
.
This is the book of Rosaline Goode the youngest of the sisters who carries a very heavy weight on her shoulders, lover of the stars and astrology is in a dangerous position to be found as an intruder in the neighboring house to use a telescope
.
Forced into an arranged marriage to a raw American man everyone calls Midas for his fortune in the gold mines, so as not to ruin her name and that of her family, Rosaline finds in her husband what she didn't know she needed so badly, a safe place to be and love
.
Crying Wolfe is a quick read story, emotional and of course sexy and heartthrob like every Kerrigan Byrne book
.
Thanks to Kerrigan Byrne for give me this chance to read this beautiful book
I've said it before and I'll say it again...I love all of Kerrigan Byrne's books. Crying Wolfe is the fifth book in the Goode Girls series and I loved it. From beginning to end, how the main characters met and built their relationship was great.
I thought both Rosaline and Elijah were interesting characters. Rosaline does her best to avoid society and has a love for the stars, which is what brings her into Elijah Wolfe's new home. Elijah recently purchased the home and when she decides to sneak in, Elijah has no idea who she is and follows her back to her room. Unfortunately for both, her reputation is ruined now and after finding out she is the sister in law to a friend (Carlton Morley) they find themselves being talked into a name only marriage to avoid any further scandal for the Goode family.
As I mentioned, I loved how their relationship developed. Eli grew up in Nevada and isn't your normal gentleman but he does his best to become one and Rosaline is the one to step up and push him to consider an actual relationship as she wants more than a marriage of convenience.
This was a great next book in the series and I look forward to whatever Byrne writes next. If you haven't picked up this book (or this series) yet, I definitely think you should.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ out of 5
Wowsers! This is one filthy talking hero for a historical romance and the hero and heroine got down and dirty 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Kerrigan Byrne is an auto read author for me and this book did not disappoint.
Our heroine is caught in a compromising situation with an absolute stranger (after she is caught stealing from him) and forced to marry. Our hero is an extremely wealthy American mine owner that is suddenly saddled with a demure and very English wife he has no idea what to do with (other than be very attracted to her 😂).
I love Marriage of Convenience tropes and this did not disappoint me at all! They both had attraction for the other and our rough hero paired with demure heroine was a match made with 🔥🔥🔥🔥. The hero swearing all the time was almost too much for me (almost), but his musings on women and their “mysteries” had me clapping out loud (I see what you were doing there KB). Loved the book and looking forward to the next in the series!
Crying Wolfe by Kerrigan Byrne is book 5 in the Goode Girls Series. This is the story of Rosaline Goode 'Ros' and Elijah Wolfe 'Eli'. Rosaline was stressed out and thought to enter her neighbors home that allows her to look at the stars. But Elijah is there and thinks she is breaking and entering so he chases her with a gun. Elijah and Rosaline are caught in her room by her brother in law Carlton Morley. Carlton tells Elijah he will have to marry Rosaline. Now they have swore to be in name only but their attraction has started to change their plans.
This is the 5th book in the Goode Girls series, and it features one the recently discovered relatives of the Goode girls in the earlier books, Rosaline Goode.
Rosaline and her siblings have recently arrived in London and are struggling to adjust to life in this new world. She has a particular affinity for astronomy, which is challenging to see with the naked eye or even her instruments in the middle of the city, but luckily, there is an elderly widow next door that has a wondrous device in the upmost level of her home that Rosaline can scale from her bedroom through a window to use. One night, as she was sneaking over to use it, she is startled to encounter a very grumpy man that takes a shot at her and chases her back to her room. When he confronts her, she learns that he has recently acquired the house and he believes her to be the help from next door attempting to steal from him.
Elijah Wolfe has been betrayed, back-stabbed, and stolen from his whole life. He has climbed his way out of the American mines and has established himself as one of the wealthiest men in the west. He has come to London in search of the treasure he has sought since he first learned of its existence and will stop at nothing to obtain it. When he finds a child in his home, he is certain she is yet another person trying to take things that belong to him, and he chases her to the house next door to confront the owners and make them aware of the criminal they have as hired help. Eli is shocked to find that she is actually a lady! And since the window he used to enter the house is her bedroom, he has effectively compromised her.
Eli never intended to marry, and certainly not by force, but he knows he has no choice. He is shocked to find that the petite Rosaline sets his body aflame like no other woman ever has, and he is terrified he will harm her with his large size and rough ways. He wants to keep distance between them for that reason in addition to his fears that anyone he lets get close to him will betray him. Rosaline is surprised to learn that she likes her new husband's gruff manner and his passionate touch. But she has a secret... one that can be the undoing of their happy union.
What I liked:
- The h was likeable
- Story line was good and held my interest
- Steamy goodness!
What I didn't like as much:
- Why oh why did Eli have to be as crude as he was? I get that he is a ruffian from the American west, but he was unnecessarily crass, and I am no prude by any stretch - it was too much
- I didn't feel much in the way of build-up for the attraction between these characters; chemistry was not really there
Overall, this was a very quick read with some solid steam and plot, but the romance element was not as engaging as what I am used to enjoying from this author.
Plot --- 3/5
Main Characters --- 3/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- nothing graphic or domestic
Language --- a LOT
POV --- 3rd
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Awesome, another story of the Goode girls! While reading Tempting Fate, I was afraid we were saying goodbye to the Goode girls. Because after reading about Honoria (Courting Trouble ), Merry (Dancing with Danger) and Felicia (Tempting Fate) finding their match, we were running out of Goode girls. But, fortunately, Kerrigan gave us more girls at the end of Tempting Fate. It seemed, that there were some more Goode girls around. And in Crying Wolfe we can read about Rosaline. Rosaline has always learned that she is a disgrace and a no good to this world. As a result, or coping mechanism, Rosaline tends to steal little things. So, when she secretly enters her old neighbors attic, to use the telescope, she can’t help but take a little, useless artifact. But then she is caught red handed by the new -American- owner of the house. Elijah Wolfe has come to England to search for a treasure, to avenge his family. He didn’t count on getting in a compromising position with a young little lass. The younger sister of one of his business associates. No matter that she was the one breaking in and entering his new home. Forced together in a marriage, neither was planning, Rosaline and Elijah try to make the best of it. Because, certainly, they can’t fit together. Now can they? Two total opposites, with a secret past…
As usual with Kerrigan, she knows how to bring in the tension, the secrets and the unexpected turns. Totally awesome, and I’m very happy to see yet another Goode girl get a happily ever after! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
This book was just too short for me to become invested in at all. I felt like most of the relationship development happened off page and for that reason I wasn't really rooting for Rosaline and Eli as a couple. I also hated how much of the book focused on how small and young-looking Rosaline was, it was just repeated over and over again.
This is the first book in the Goode Girls series where we get to see more of the 'secret Goodes' and start off with the youngest, Rosaline. Rosaline is thrust into a world that she never really wanted but has not choice but to embrace to help her brother. We also meet Elijah, gruff American who is slightly less rough around the edges than the other men in this series, but what he lacks in criminality, he makes up for in crudeness.
After catching Rosaline in his home while she attempts to stargaze and getting caught chasing her back to her home the two have to marry to avoid bringing even more scandal to the Goode name. From here we get to see these two get to know each other and fall in love.
I loved Elijah's crassness and multiple times he had me laughing at the inventive way he would curse. Rosaline was also a good character who has secrets of her own and for others that she is trying to keep away from the husband she can't help but to fall in love with.
Something that I did enjoy about the book is that Kerrigan did not shy away from her brother <spoiler>being homosexual.</spoiler> and I am interested in reading his book when it comes.
A few things that I did not like about the book was how short it was. Even with the Goode Girls books being short, I feel like this one was the shortest of them all. I also did not care for the main conflict that the characters have with each other towards the end.
This is only the second historical romance by this author that I have read. I loved her historical murder series but should have realized that she likes to use the F word continually and I find that very hard to read. It seems I may be one of a very few that don’t like it. I enjoyed the storyline but found that I just could not finish it. If you like lots of swearing and foul mouth and hot sex, this book is for you. I received this as an ARC from NetGalley and freely give my review.
I enjoyed Crying Wolfe by Kerrigan Bryne, but not as much as the prior books in the series. Rosaline and Elijah are hot together, but there wasn't the same spark that the twin's stories for instance had with their heros.
Eli and Rosaline are forced to marry when he catches her sneaking around his house and he follows her back to hers, into her bedroom. She is timid initially based on her past and how extended relatives treated her, but through the story you see her come out of her shell and reach for what she desires. Eli is crass, not at all an English gentleman and Rosaline helps him move through London society so he can continue his business ventures while also searching for a treasure that was stolen from him.
Decent amount of steam, but not over the top.
I rate this book 4-stars.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange from my honest review. All thoughts are my own.
Elijah is a rough and tumble man forged in hard work. He has no time for fancy ladies or marriage. Rosaline has nothing left thanks to her father. She studies and maps the stars until she finds herself in the bedroom of Elijah, the neighbor. The couple end up having to marry which neither are happy about at the time. Elijah finds himself craving the touch of his wife despite his objections to the marriage. Can the couple work things out?
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley and am leaving a review.
I really enjoyed Crying Wolfe, I would go as far as to say that it's one of my favorites in the Goode Girl series. Elijah was my favorite he really made the entire story for me, I loved how crass he was but he was also honest and he really cared about Rosaline. The book starts out with Eli catching Rosaline sneaking into his home, he confuses her for a thief so he follows her back into her bedroom window. He comes to find out he invaded the room of his friend Carlton Morley sister-in-law. Rosaline is compromised because they are caught together, so they are forced to marry. What starts off as a supposed marriage of convenience blossoms into so much more. I loved Rosaline and Eli's bond, they had their ups and downs in the book but ultimately love sees them through. Thank you Kerrigan Byrne for another lovely book and thank you to Net galley for the ARC.
I adored everything about Rosaline and Eli’s story!
This one had a really interesting story to go along with the romance. These two come from completely different worlds yet they fit together perfectly. I loved their banter, their chemistry and am definitely looking for more HR storytelling from this author.
I voluntarily received an eARC of "Crying Wolfe" via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Rosaline Goode is followed by families legacy of shame. Her anxiety manifests into stealing things and this habit leads her being chased down by the hot and rough American Elijah Wolfe who is convinced she stole something from him. A chase that ends with him standing in her bedroom and being forced into a marriage of convenience.
I really adored this couple because it had two of my favourite tropes... age gap and self-made man. He is constantly so afraid of hurting her but yet can't keep his hands off her.
Also Ros was so sweet. I love an astronomy loving heroine and though she was a more innocent heroine she wanted to learn everything.
The sex scenes were also pretty hot... and long. The first one was definitely a lets learn everything about eachothers body all night.
Highly reccomend if you are looking for a faster passed read with age gap, self-made man, and innocent heroine trope.
There is a slight TW to some physical abuse but it is only skimmed over once and not in great detail.
Let me tell you, I will read every book that Kerrigan Byrne writes. I don’t know how she manages to get me to love the anti hero and the unlovable. But she managed to get me to fall for an old, craggy, set in his ways man. Grey hair and all!
This romance blossomed right before our eyes and it was beautiful to watch. Here we have a sweet girl, who has a few secrets of her own, but finds herself in a pickle and is forced to marry someone she doesn’t even know. But she goes in with her head held high and isn’t afraid to make demands, when most girls faced with this situation would probably be crying or scared. She wanted more for herself and she went for it.
I gotta say, Elijah Wolfe was unexpected, but even I was smitten! This wealthy, rough and tumble man wants nothing to do with marriage but fate decided he needed a little more excitement in his life. Watching him slowly fall for his wisp of a bride was sweet. He thought she could never love a broken man like him but little did he know that she would be the one to put him back together.
I don’t recall the last age gap romance that had me swooning and smiling all over the place. Honestly, I usually steer clear of them cuz they always seem too over the top. But this was a Kerrigan Byrne story, so that was impossible. I knew I’d love it. And honestly, I forgot about the difference after a while. They just clicked.
I love this series!
I love the Goode girls and I love sweet and impetuous Rosaline's pairing with rough and tumble American Elijah.
I adore Kerrigan Byrne, and it was fabulous to be back in the Goode Girls world. I was completely enthralled with the total dichotomy that is Rosaline and Eli. She seems to be a timid wisp of a lady who would rather slip through the dark unnoticed and stare at the stars. He's a brash American who's only in England to track down a piece of stolen treasure. Circumstances force them into a marriage neither wants; at first. Although Crying Wolfe isn't quite as action-packed as the previous books in the series it's still full of tension and near-misses and kept me engrossed until the end. It's such a great addition to the series and I can not wait to see what's next.
“Rosaline. My little wife. My greatest treasure.”
Rosaline Goode is the youngest of the new set of siblings and is both sheltered and naive despite experiencing a traumatic upbringing. Her mental health issues (OCD/kleptomania) are largely misunderstood given the era, so she tries to hide them from the world without much success.
Whilst Elijah Wolfe may be a ruthless American businessman, having been born in the harsh Nevada desert. He realizes that he is facing a battle when he meets Rosaline Goode and must marry her.
Both their past and backstory were so but, but added so much more character to them. It also had a good level of angst - it was the kind that made me ache, especially the more internal parts where they focused on their insecurities and issues, without being overdramatic.
Kerrigan Byrne is an auto-buy author for me, the writing, characters, and plot were so encaptivating that I finished this in one sitting. The well-executed age gap and writing about disabilities totally won me over.
“Smoothing her hair from her face, he slid an arm behind her neck, cradling her as he pressed a tender kiss to her forehead. 'Don’t let go,’ he said, more an appeal than a command. ‘I think you’re holding all the broken pieces of me together.’”
Ahhh I mean how can a character be so fucking gooddd.
I just wished it was a bit longer, some parts did feel rushed though it was not anything major.
I cant wait to read more books in this series.
“But you’re my wife. I took a vow to honor and protect you. To cherish you…and that means I got to try to listen. To understand you. And if I don’t understand, to do my best to help you in any way I can.”
