Oh my gosh! I loved this book so much, as soon as I finished it, I was ready to relive it all again! This was so freaking cute!!! I immediately connected with Rosaline and Elijah. They were both so unique from what I’m accustomed to reading.
Rosaline is small framed and has a proclivity that I’ve never found in another heroine. She does things that had me grinning from ear to ear and yet at the core of it was something that made my heart hurt for her. I loved her so much. She was the perfect counterpoint to Elijah and that fact is what helped to create the connection I felt with her.
Elijah was AMAZING!!! He was coarse and rough, lacking social graces as well as any desire to gain them. I loved his often grumpy manner as well as the thoughts he often had that made me laugh. It didn’t take him long to claim Rosaline as his own, and yet he had a history that was almost impossible to overcome when it came to the issue he would have to face with her.
This started out fast and continued with a pace that kept me turning the pages. Although this is a relatively short book, it captured my attention immediately, made me fall in love with this couple and kept me engaged from the very beginning. While it doesn’t consume the story, the chemistry between Elijah and Rosaline was HOT! And when the angst cranked up, it was heartbreaking.
With an epilogue that left me smiling and wanting to twirl with happiness, I only wished I had more of this wonderful couple!
I haven't read any other's but I didn't really feel I need to. This was well written and the character's were good and I did enjoy it but there is a but. There is absolutely no historical feeling with this book it uses modern language and could have been set at any time so if this bother's you avoid. I received this in exchange for an honest review as given above.
Kerrigan Byrne gets me every single time--I should know better than to pick up anything she writes if I don't have the proper time to devote to inhaling it in a single sitting. She has this way of making me completely invested in her characters within paragraphs. In the case of Crying Wolfe, I fell in love with Rosaline and Eli from the very first scene. I mean what's not to love? A thief, a shotgun wedding, an unlikely pairing that ends up showcasing surprisingly deep feelings and of course I'm going to be hooked--and you are too. I'm telling you, you are going to sit down thinking that you're going to read a few pages and hours later, find yourself finished and reaching for the very next Kerrigan Byrne novel. Loved it!
Rosaline Goode loves looking at the stars. An American, Ely Wolfe loves to make money, but most of all he wants the sapphire stolen from him years before. In an unexpected situation, Rosaline and Ely end up in a shotgun wedding. An attraction burns very quickly on their wedding night. It's the start of a very passionate marriage, until Ely discovers Rosaline's secret. Reading the books in this series makes you want to read them again. They grab and don't let go. More new books are planned in this series. YAY!!!

Should I read in order?
Yes! They are all so good and this is a continuation of the characters from her Victorian Rebels series. If you want to start at the very beginning, get The Highwayman. That said, I do think this one stands alone fairly well if you don’t mind some side characters mentioned that you don’t know (Dorian Blackwell from The Highwayman, Morley from Seducing a Stranger, Felicity and Mercy from Tempting Fate and Dancing with Danger...the interactions are small though.)
Basic plot:
Eli Wolfe made his fortune in the American West after being born with nothing. Now in England, he’s searching for a treasure stolen from him and somehow gets caught in a compromising position with the very sweet Rosaline Goode.
Give this a try if you want:
- Victorian time period (1892)
- Ruined heroine resulting in marriage
- American hero, British heroine
- Kleptomania faced as a challenge
- Medium steam – 2 scenes but one being 10% of the book and the shorter total page count make this one feel hotter
- Age gap with older hero
Ages:
- Hero I believe is 36 (He comments on her being 15 years younger than him and thinks about the silver in his hair), heroine 21
My thoughts:
Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this one. Meeting Eli, I wasn’t sold on him after his first interaction with Rosalind. But I tend to adore ruined heroine and that happened pretty soon in the book.
Eli totally won me over. Totally. He was so sweet and gentle with Rosalind and I just ate it up. He was born in Nevada with nothing, and ended up making a fortune in the mines out there. He’s a bit jaded from everyone wanting things from him, or just taking from him and he struggles a bit with trust.
Rosalind is just the sweetest. Coming from a family that has suffered, she struggles with coping with her past trauma and my heart just broke for her. Seeing her interactions with Eli and her family I found myself loving her so much.
There were quite a bit of feels for me in this novel. I laughed at how adorable they were together, and how Eli tried to curb his language and American harshness from her. My heart was gripped as Rosalind shared her demon and how she struggles. I swooned over the love scenes that were a perfect balance of details and heart.
The story felt complete for me, I do wish there had been a touch more character depth but I think it was great for the shorter page count. As always with her, I just want more and never want it to end haha.
OK SO THAT WEDDING NIGHT WAS CHEF'S KISS BABY WOW
4/5 stars!!
If the chemistry and yumminess from that wedding night had been woven into the rest of Eli's and Rosaline's story, I think that this book would have been a 5-star read for me... but it was the fact that I saw what we could have had with Eli and Rosaline in addition to their wedding night that I was like oop that would have been spicy, you know? This wedding night scene lives in my head rent-free now because it was so long and Eli just kept talking and talking while he was giving and giving and I just want to thank him for that. That part where she's frustrated and overwhelmed and then wondering if her hands are pushing him away from her *ahem* or pulling him in - I just, yep, it was very good. So yeah, the steam in this was great BUT if we could have pulled that wedding night bedroom scene steam into other parts of their relationship, that would have been excellent.
I take a super long time to read one book and I was able to finish this in a little over a day (seriously, I cannot read fast so that is fast for me). It was nice to be able to fly through a book and this book did just that. It's not like this book had a bland plot either... no ma'am, she was interesting, fun, and just the right amount of angsty.
My main critique goes back to where the book lost a star: the chemistry between Eli and Rosaline. It was like there but also not, at times?? I think this is where the book would have benefitted from another 70-100 pages.
I love Kerrigan Byrne books and this series is such a fun one. As usual I really enjoyed the characters and the story!
Thank you for the chance to read early!
Kerrigan Byrne wrote my very favorite romance novel, Seducing a Stranger, which is the first book in this series, the Goode Girls series. So, you really do need to read the first four books in the series before you read this or you will be beyond lost. I am sorry, but if you haven’t read the previous four, there will be spoilers for that series, even though I am not spoiling anything in this book.
So I ended up liking the characters better than I thought I would. I LOVED the Goode girls—I adore Prudence, Mercy and Felicity . . . I even love Nora, who had LEGIT issues. So I didn’t know if their newfound siblings, their father’s previous family, would engender those same feelings from me. If you read the previous books, you know that their father was a pretty horrible person. Baron Cresthaven, Clarence Goode, was not someone you cried for when you heard of his off-screen death. He was pretty odious. He turned his back on three of his daughters, and only provided for Felicity in his will—the man had cheese though, which is why Felicity needed a bodyguard in her book (the fourth: Tempting Fate). That fourth book introduces us to their “new” siblings . . . see, Baron Cresthaven had a wife before the Goode Girls’ mother—her name was Mary and he left her to marry the girls’ mother, who was an invalid and soon to die. Except she didn’t. He had three kids before the Goode girls, Emmaline, Emmett, and Rosaline, and took care of them while Mary was alive (apparently, she was his true love), but once she died, “their upkeep dwindled” (reminder, this is all from the fourth book, Tempting Fate).
So, anyway, that catches us up to Crying Wolfe. Elijah (Eli) Wolfe is a rich American friend of Carlton Morley, who is now the Commander of Scotland Yard and who lives next door. Apparently he also deals in antiquities, so he purchased a house full of treasures. Rosaline is the Goode Girls’ younger sister, whose life really has changed now that she’s part of this (new) family. One sister is married to Sir Morley. One sister is married to a doctor/surgeon who works for the biggest gangster in London. The other two sisters are married to dangerous smugglers. Short version (I’m taking this from the book description, so I am not spoiling anything): two total strangers, Eli and Rosaline, get caught alone under the circumstances of their first meeting and end up married. So the book is about whether that will work (with some intrigue and some issues that complicate their marriage). Eli is a wild and free American, so this English honor marriage is an anathema to him. She is really young (she’s much younger than he is) and has no desire to be married to “an uncouth American gunslinger” but she knows what has to be done.
The book worked pretty well. Eli and Rosaline are very different than any of the other couples in the Victorian Rebels (precursors to Goode Girls) and Goode Girls series (except maybe Gavin and Samantha in the 5th Victorian Rebels, The Scot Beds His Wife—to be honest, this book reminded me of that one a lot). The spicy bits were delicious. The writing is good (it’s Kerrigan Byrne, so it will be top notch). I didn’t think I liked Rosaline in the beginning, but I ended up starting to feel for her—she’s very young and Eli is way more mature. I was happy with the pacing and how it ended up. I got to see enough of the previous characters without them overwhelming the new characters. It was a fun read. I didn’t love it as much as the previous books, but it was interesting enough to keep me reading it consistently and there were cats, yay!
Kerrigan Byrne has become a favorite of mine and she consistently delivers my favorite kind of stories with her masterful writing. Her characters are created with layers upon layers of complexities and contradictions. Both Eli and Rosaline have suffered in life. Both have survived and in Eli's case, triumphed in business and amassed a large fortune. Once again, Kerrigan Byrne brings her readers into the story and keeps you there - fully and utterly invested. The plot is tense and full of twists, with a touch of a mystery and plenty of smart humor, off the charts steamy times and a love that will no doubt survive a lifetime. Characters from previous books in this series move in and out of this story helping move it along. In the end, Eli and Rosaline find their HEA. The author has once again given me an excellent read and I can't wait to go back and read more in this series and more of her books. HIGHLY recommend!
A rough American, a tiny whisp of a woman, a late night theft and a compromising position. All together resulting in a surprising marriage of heat and obsession. When Elijah Wolfe chased his little thief from his house he never imagined it would result in leg-shackling himself to a woman who ended up being more than he ever dreamed. Rosaline’s innocence and quiet demeanor quickly unleash a passion between them, and despite their best intentions the two are inexplicably in love it’s one another. As in any marriage, communication can be lost leaving doubts and fears. It is these fears that drive Rosaline’s compulsions, never realizing that the one thing that hardened her husband was the heartbreak of those same betrayals in his past. Only the need to protect this woman, whom he cherishes above all else despite any hurt, can bring these two back together. A great read packed with heat, intrigue and love.
I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had recently re-read the preceding books to refresh my memory a bit more on the details of the family dynamic. With that said, I liked the general plot and characters, and thought the premise was fun and creative, although perhaps a bit far-fetched.
The interactions between the main characters were enjoyable and I thought it was a sweet connection between an unlikely pair. Despite their situation, they actually ended up really caring for one another.
Aside from my general enjoyment of the story, the book felt a little short, although the plot didn't feel rushed per se. I would have liked to see the story expanded a bit more. I would give the book 3 1/2 stars.
I am a huge fan of this author and this series and this book was a delightful addition to it. I loved both Eli and Rosaline right from their first meeting. I adore how strong Rosaline is even with all her issues. She is an amazing heroine and it was so much fun to see her get her own HEA. As I started reading the story I was doubtful if I would like the huge age gap and honestly, there was no point in having such a huge gap between them. I still don’t like it but I was entranced by Eli and Rosaline and their romance and loved the book. This is book five from the “A Goode Girls Romance” series and I would definitely recommend reading it as part of it. Some of the things that are described in the book make a lot more sense if you have read the series.
I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review*
Crying Wolfe was another fantastic addition to the Goode Girl series! From the meet-cute to being forced to marry, I really enjoyed reading about Rosaline and Elijah. It was really refreshing to have an American hero and I loved the differences between him and Ros. I do wish that the OCD/klepto plot point was mentioned way earlier; it just seemed out of nowhere to drive them apart for the climax.
Another amazing book from this author. A new set of siblings is letting her continue this series and I couldn’t be happier about it. Excellent marriage of convenience plot, and the characters were well developed. Highly recommend.
Will he let his past wounds dictate his future …
Oh my!
For a short read, it has everything to make you swoon and fan yourself.
From the wedding night to Eli’s education in lady’s things, you will need to make a turn to the commodities to not pee your pants on and activate the air-con on artic temp to cool yourself down.
While it is not a shotgun wedding, Eli and Rosaline have come to it after their first encounter lead them into a compromising situation.
So everything to sign them to a difficult start, except behind Eli’s gruff and aloof demeanor is a kind man able to acknowledge his new bride is more than her fragile appearance.
Eli made himself the man he is now, from the US pits to English high society, he accumulated a wealth few can compete against. But it came with a cost, his loss of trust in others as everyone seems to want a piece of him but no one wants the man behind the treasure.
Rosaline grew up from an abusive household to an other. Coping from the ill-treatments her own way, even if her mean to escape leads her on the wrong path, it helps her to tackle her despair. Yet she is still in a fragile place, unsure of herself longing for an other world.
In Eli she will find an ally, a man who does not see her as a pawn nor a pretty ornament as he listens to her. But as their secrets and past wounds come to light, can their burgeoning romance withstand the weight of it on their thin trust.

I have been granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
As always, Kerrigan Byrne immediately drew me in and come lately immersed me in this unusual love story. While it’s not my favorite of the Goode sister stories, it was still a great read. My only complaint was that the story was too short. The development of the characters and their story felt a bit rushed. Despite that, I would definitely recommend!
Rated 4.5 Stars
Crying Wolfe was amazing. I absolutely adored Rosaline and Eli’s story. It was such a beautiful story with the right amount of steam and heart. I’ve loved all the books in this series but this one just might be my favourite of them all. It worked for me on so many levels and I very highly recommend it.
it was a good story. I really enjoyed these characters and their development. It's also always fun to revisit old and favorite characters.

Happy Reading Lisa 📚
Even though this wasn't my favorite of the Goode Girls series, it was still enjoyable. As previewed at the end of the last novella, the series is now shifting to the previously unknown branch of the Goode family (technically the legitimate heirs of their shared father). Rosaline Goode is the youngest of the new set of siblings, and is both sheltered and naive despite experiencing a traumatic upbringing. Her mental health issues (OCD/kleptomania) are largely misunderstood given the era, so she tries to hide them from the world without much success. Her marriage to Eli is precipitated by her breaking into the neighboring house's observatory to use a telescope and, while there, giving in to her urge to steal an item that Eli was storing there for safe keeping. When they are discovered and forced to marry to avoid scandal, Eli and Rosaline slowly fall in love after realizing that each has what the other was missing.
I normally don't have an issue with age-gap romances, and I know that Rosaline kept saying that she's not as young as everyone thought she was, but her childlike behavior at times -- coupled with Eli acting much older than his age -- took me out of the romance frequently. Their instalove/lust felt a bit off in this context. I liked Rosaline as a character on her own, including her impressive feats to steal a gem right from Dorian Blackwell's own house, but I didn't feel fully invested in her relationship.
