I didn't realize this book was first written in Swedish, but this didn't take any enjoyment away from a very well written read that was full of suspense and intrigue. Really a good read, entertaining throughout.
Great plot to get yourself lost in. This book has everything. A real fast paced thriller. Will get your heart racing on more than one occasion. Very well written. Highly recommend this book. Really like the book cover too
I liked the characters and I found their personal lives more interesting that the murder investigation.. The story was okay but in parts the text didn't flow nicely, presumably because it is a translation, and there were a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, which got worse as the novel progressed. I wouldn't necessarily have mentioned it in a review of an ARC since there's chance for this to be corrected, but it's made it into the published paperback version too.
When murder comes to a secluded island the ghosts of the past will resurface. A young boy, Fredrik Frding survived one of Europes worst ferry disasters. The tragedy haunts him, and decades later Fredrik refuses to give up hope that his brother also survived. It's become an obsession that cost him a career in the police, and his relentless quest for answers leads him from Stockholm to a remote island off Swedens coast, the island community is tiny, but is bolstered by a bustling tourist industry. Its where Detective Sofia Hjortén retreated to after her personal life fell apart. When a man is murdered at the local hotel, she gathers evidence, and is shocked to see Fredrik in the area: his departure from police training also signalled the end of their brief affair. Sofia's work leads her to unravel secrets from forty years ago. What does a summer camp have to do with the dead man? The mystery Sofia must solve a job is made harder when the key suspect in the crime turns out to be Fredrik. Has his fragile mental state led to violence, or is there someone else out there whose demons have led to bloodshed? This is a compulsive Scandinavian crime thriller with a vivid and atmospheric setting. Perfect for police procedural fans who love the novels of Maria Adolfsson, Anders de la Motte and Hkan Nesser. Death In Summer is written with a riveting storyline, well developed characters and a setting that added an extra layer to the atmosphere of the book. Kudos to Lina Areklew on her debut novel and also to translator Tara Chace who excels with this Swedish translation just as she has for Danish authors Katrine Engberg and Anne Mette Hancock.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily.
The descriptions of places and food set the scene in Scandinavia, I thought the author created the atmosphere very realistically. The characters of Sofia and Frederik have backgrounds which have clearly affected them, making them unique in their behaviours, especially around others. The plot was clever, well thought out, and the pace was speedy making this a book I didn't want to put down.
It's unbelievable that this is a debut novel: clever, thrilling, excellent final twist are just a few of the words I can use to describe it but they don't do it justice. It is brilliant, and I hope this is just the start of a series.
The book is told from different points of view and you gradually come to realize how they all fit together . This book really stimulated my curiosity and got me thinking about the crime(s) . There are a couple of twists in the plot, one fairly unexpected. I liked the descriptions and characterizations. The story takes place in two different times, but this was also well done.
The sign of a good thriller, I could not put it down towards the end ... a real page turner in the last 100 pages, before that a slower burn .
Thank you to Net Galley, Cannelo and the author for a great read in exchange for an honest review
I love a good Scandi noir and Death in Summer was no execption. Interesting (flawed) characters, nice twists and melancholy atmosphere. Looking forward for the next book in this series.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, good luck to the author.
Characters that you connected with and travelled through the mystery with.
Good plot and story it flowed at a steady pace, likable characters and a satisfying end.
Thank you netgalley for the chance to read
The one thing that I really liked about this book is that it was direct and got straight to the point and their was no slobbering, a very good book I have to say ..
I love foreign reads. What happens when someone from your past just enters your life again. Fredrik Froding is convinced that he has since his brother Niklas but that is impossible as he died on the ferry with his parents. But Fredrik knows that he has to follow the man that he saw with Niklas. His journey will take him to Ulvo where everything will change into a nightmare for him.
He has no one to turn to but Sofia Hjorten doorstep. But can't be honest about what happened at the hotel as he knows that she is the police and he could be in alot of trouble.
Sofia can't believe that Fredrik is here and that he is still the same as before but she feels like he is hiding something. So when he disappears from her house and she finds out that he is a suspect in a murder she is angry and hurt. But could he have really killed Adam Cedar? She needs to find out the truth.
Fredrik needs to be able to find out the truth about Adam and why he has a photo in his bag with the eyes pinned out.
It all started with a trip to Ulvo in 1979 and something horrible happened there and now someone is going to make everyone pay for what they did. Can Fredrik find out the truth before it is too late to save himself?
Sofia & her team need to find out him as another body has been found and they are running around in circles. Will they be able to find the killer before more victims are found?
Where will this leave Sofia & Fredrik?
A good thrilling read. I liked the history between Sofia & Fredrik and how they found each other again even if it wasn't by accident. And how she didn't believe that he could have killed anybody and that she hid his involvement away from her team even though she knew that she would probably lose her career.
Poor Fredrik he is one big mess but somehow he pulls himself together to follow the leads that he has found. He really comes into his own by pushing his barriers and for once he doesn't think about his own tragedy past.
The ending makes me hope that they have a chance at a relationship.
Children can be so cruel but that bunch really were nasty. I understand why the killer went after them as she did deserve justice but could have anyone been able to stop what she did?
Thank you to Netgalley & Canelo Publishing for the ARC copy. This is my voluntary review.
This was a dark atmospheric thriller. There was lots going on but everything tied together effectively. I enjoyed reading it.
A dark Scandi-noir thriller with excellent descriptions of the Swedish landscape. Historic church-run summer camp from 40 years ago, Sofia, a detective, investigating murder in her northern town and Frederick a lad still suffering from being the only member of his family to survive the Estonia disaster. Both have historic and mental issues and everything ties together in the end after a satisfying number of twists and turns. Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
As a young boy, Fredrik Fröding survived one of Europe’s worst ferry disasters. The tragedy haunts him, and decades later Fredrik refuses to give up hope that his brother Niklas also lived. It’s become an obsession that cost him a career in the police, and his relentless quest for answers leads him from Stockholm to the island of Ulvön…. A beautiful and delightful book to read, one I really just wanted to spend my time reading and savoring the experience.
As far as Scandinavian-Noir goes this is one of the best I’ve read for a long time.
I find some of the genre to be a bit rambling, almost cosy crime style, whilst having a good hard story.
This book is the good hard psychological thriller, murder mystery, without the rambling.
A joy to read.
Twists and turns throughout
And a shocking ending
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I really enjoyed this book. I’m a fan of books set in Scandinavian countries and this read didn’t disappoint. I thought it had a cast of very likeable, realistic and believable characters. Sofia investigates a murder where Fredrik has unwittingly found himself under suspicion by the Police. This is a well written book with a good plot line and I was engaged in this read from start to finish. I loved the way the story moved from past to present so effortlessly which gave it much more depth and insight into the characters involved. The author has, in my opinion wrote a cracker of a read here, and one that had everything I like - murders, twists, good writing, suspense and I think the settings of the story made such a great read. Overall this is an absorbing and very entertaining read that I loved. I hope there will be a second book and I would definitely want to read it. If you like Scandinavian crime books, give this a go - I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
A new author for me and what a cracking read. From the first to the last page I was hooked. Well written, well developed characters and believable. The story flowed well. Full of twists and so gripping. A well deserved four stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
A brilliant Scandinavian crime noir thriller revenge by a serial killer whose victims had abused her in the her first kill was shortly after her abuse..She continued to carry out her revenge a number of years later, throw in a few romantic interlude sand you have a fascinating read very difficult to put down well recommended.
A solid Scandi noir police investigation with an added creep factor from flashbacks to a church run summer camp forty years previously. Sofia is an engaging detective, and Frederick, who accidentally gets himself caught up in the murder investigation, is a brilliantly flawed character with a unique back story and trauma. The investigation progresses well, with more clues and bodies stacking up throughout, but the highlights for me were the cutaway insights into the mind of the mysterious killer and flashbacks to the victims as teenagers.. The ending is great with a nice final twist that answered a nagging question I’d been hanging onto throughout.
I really enjoyed this read, it was gripping and I couldn't put it down. It was well written with a riveting storyline, well developed characters and a setting that added an extra layer to the atmosphere of the book. It was twisty and unpredictable and kept me guessing. I also love the front cover. I will definitely be looking for more by the author.
