This is book two in the series and I can already see the growth in character development in our main characters Chloe and Izzie. They are stronger, more confident characters. I enjoyed the first book but I believe this book is better. The mystery is well-written with well-placed red herring which kept me guessing who the real killer was and why. I recommend this book to cozy mystery fans.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
There is so much for me to like about Bailee Abbott's Paint by Murder series. My family all comes from the area in which the books are set, and I love to visit and look at maps and try to identify the fictional locations. I do, however, have a bit of a problem about the maturity of Chloe and Izzy at times. The whole family dynamic doesn't seem quite realistic and I don't care for romance triangles as someone ends up being hurt. "Kill Them with Canvas" is about clearing the sister's Aunt Charlotte of a murder charge in the days approaching Halloween. Their obnoxious cousin take a part in the plot also. I suspected but didn't know until the end who was responsible for the murder. I look forward to more, with hopefully more 'adulting' by Chole and Izzy.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
With the death of one of their sisterhood charter managers, Chloe’s aunt has become the number one suspect. Her hands are full in trying to extricate her aunt and trying her best not to annoy the police. Chloe must put all her sleuthing skills into action to save her aunt.
This was an enjoyable and engaging cozy mystery. This was the second book I've read in this series, and it was as entertaining as the first. I look forward to reading more books by the author. I highly recommend this book to other cozy mystery readers.
Definitely a fun cozy mystery. Makes me want to go back & read the first one that’s for sure! The ghost story & Halloween setting are a charming addition.
I liked the sisters. It’s rare to have two leads so that’s a nice part as well.
I’ll be going back & reading the first & keep my eyes out for next one!
Chloe Abington and her sister Izzy are enjoying the huge success running Paint with a Irwin their paint party business in western New York lakeside town of Whisper Cove. Their Aunt Constance sets them up with a gig hosting a Halloween painting party. The guests will be painting a local ghost legend the Lady of Chautauqua who died a hundred years ago and rises from the lake every October to haunt anyone who dares venture out on All Hallows’ Eve. The event goes off without a hitch until Chloe overhears an argument between her Aunt Constance and Viola Finnwinkle. Both women leave the ladies painting and the next morning Viola'sbody is discovered floating face down near the town ferry dock. The image is an exact replica of a painting Chloe and Izzy discovered at the event the night before. The police find Constance’s purple knit hat laying near the crime scene. Constance pleads innocent saying the hat mysteriously went missing during the event. She begs Chloe and Izzy to help her the sisters believe she is innocent but if so who is the real killer and when will the next victim turn up? This was a very captivating story leading to find the real murderer. Great characters and a fun enjoyable story.
An interesting premise but this book just did not hold my attention.
I did not connect with the characters at all.
Standard cozy mystery which may interest others.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Kill Them With Canvas is the second book in Bailee Abbott’s Paint by Murder series. Chloe and Izzie Abbington own Paint With A View in Whisper Cove, NY. When their Aunt Constance is suspected of murdering Viola Finnwinkle, the director of the northern district of the Chautauqua Sisterhood, after a painting event, the girls spring into action to prove Aunt Constance’s innocence.
Whisper Cove is a quaint lake town in western New York. What’s a lake town without a Lady in the Lake legend? Vivid descriptions brought the location to life. Characters have a wide variety of personalities, so there is someone for everyone to identify with. Aunt Constance alternates between rational and hysterics. Kate Abbington, Chloe and Izzie’s mother, always tries to look on the bright side and give everyone the benefit of the doubt. The mystery is cleverly plotted with several twists that kept me guessing till the end. The culprit was on my suspect list, but not at the top. There’s romance brewing for both sisters by the end of the book. I loved the first book in the series and was anxious to read this book. I was disappointed with Chloe, she acted childish too often, particularly about the men in her life. However, I was able to look past that and enjoy the mystery.
Thanks to Negalley and Crooked Lane Books for a digital advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Once again Chloe and Izzie are dragged into a murder investigation when their Aunt Constance is the prime suspect. The Chautauqua Sisterhood hosts a Halloween event to paint the ghost Lady of Chautauqua Lake run by Chloe’s and Izzie’s Paint with a View shop and during the event Aunt Constance and Viola Finwinkle. Viola intends to disband the local chapter of the Chautauqua Sisterhood and that means Constance will lose her position as chapter President. Viola leaves before the end of the event and then turns up dead at the ferry landing. Constance has no alibi.. Detective Hunter Barrett doesn’t really think Constance is guilty but the more evidence turns up the more it points to her. She begs for Chloe and Izzie’s help so they start asking questions which turns up a couple of other suspects with one clue being the picture painted and left behind at that evening’s event which strangely shows Viola’ body floating in the lake. Complicating matters for Chloe is having to ask her ex-boyfriend Ross, an expert criminal lawyer, to come to town to represent her aunt, a maybe burgeoning romance between Chloe and Hunter and an adorable lost dog who leads them to some evidence.
This is a delightful followup to the first in the series. Characters, even the secondary ones, are likeable. The action is believable for a cozy mystery and the murderer is not hugely obvious until really close to the end of the book. I look forward to the next in this series. Recommended
Kill Them With Canvas is a fun, entertaining cozy mystery. Sisters, Chloe and Izzie have a business called "Paint with a View" in Whisper Cove, New York. They have been convinced to help their Aunt Constance, who is hosting an event of the Chautauqua Sisterhood during the Halloween season, with a painting event. They over hear their Aunt having a loud and angry argument with Viola, the head of the Sisterhood, where Viola is telling Constance that she is being removed as the local chapters President, and that their club will be combined with others. That news doesn't go over well with Constance!
Things heat up when the 2 sisters, along with Dewey (who runs the Ferry boat) find the body of Viola floating face down in the water, after she had left the painting event and headed back to the dock. While walking around one of the sisters found a purple knit hat that belongs to their Aunt Constance, which will make her the prime suspect in what becomes a case of murder, and even though they don't want to, they have to turn the evidence over to Hunter, the office investigating the case.
Regardless of what the Police Detective Hunter think, Both Chloe and Izzie know in their hearts that their aunt couldn't kill anyone, its just not in her! As things progress the sisters begin suspecting a couple other women, Sarah and Marilyn being at the top of the list!
With the twists and turns in the book, its stays engaging and a fun read. Perfect for a rainy day or a quiet evening of sipping tea (or your drink of choice) and curling up with an Cozy Mystery!
I want to thank Net Galley, and the publisher for the ARC!
Two sister’s, Chloe and Izzie, own Paint with a View in lovely Whisper Cove, New York. When their Aunt Constance argues with a woman from a nearby Sisterhood Chapter, and said woman’s body shows up in the lake soon after, Constance is the number one suspect. A lively plot begins to unfold as Chloe and Izzie make a list of possible killers and some of those suspects counterback with names to throw them off track.
I’ve struggled with liking the main characters in this story. Their personalities seem to war with each other much of the time. I also have a peeve in which I prefer the protagonist name always be mentioned almost immediately in a story, and it was 11% on my Kindle before Chloe’s name first appeared. Overall, the plot has a nice mix of mystery and supporting characters.
I honestly reviewed a digital arc provided by Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The Paint by Murder series’s Kill them with Canvas by Bailee Abbott is super cozy and easy to read. I also loved that this book had lots of different small twists and turns and keeps you guessing who the murderer is
I really liked this book and am definitely going to read the author’s previous book very soon. Loved the writing, pace and the sisters trust and determination to prove their aunt innocent. Thank you so much for the ARC!
Thank you to Netgalley and Crooked Lane books for early read. Enjoyed reading about all the characters in this story. Love a great cozy mystery and this one definitely fit the bill.. Author did a wonderful job.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book. It was a nice cozy mystery and kept my interest. Although this book is part of the series, you can read it as a standalone. If you like cozy mysteries this book is for you.
First, I enjoyed the book. However, while I liked the determination and courage Chloe and Izzy showed trying to prove their Aunt Constance's innocence in a murder case, they were way over the top all too often. While I understand they are still young, they tend to go into high drama and impulsive behavior way too frequently for my taste. Toss in, say, Constance's tendency to get hysterical and faint when confronted with problems, Dewey's strangeness, and Chloe's seemingly unending fretting about her love life and, well, it was a tad much. Hopefully they mature a bit and tone it down in future installments.
The mystery itself was fun, with hints of ghostly visitations, and enough suspects to keep you guessing. How did Viola wind up dead in the lake supposedly haunted by the ghost of Abigail Bellows, the Lady of Chautauqua Lake, who died over a hundred years ago? Where did the mysterious painting left behind after the party hosted by Chloe and Izzy come from? Was it a hint, confession or, well, sheer coincidence? Would you be freaked out or glad to have the likes of Marilyn stalking, er, keeping an eye on you? What is going on with Wink? Where does police detective Hunter Barrett get his patience when it comes to dealing with Chloe sticking her nose into his case? Does she trust him or not? Is Spencer genuinely worried about her mother or is she trying to scam her out of money? And, and, and....oh, so much more. Ignore the high drama and dangerously naive plans hatched by Chloe to catch the killer and you'll enjoy the story. Besides, there are cute dogs to pet virtually while you're reading and the premise of the Paint With a View business and location is intriguing.
Thanks #NetGalley and #CrookedLaneBooks for letting me sit in on Chloe and Izzy's Paint With a View sessions and observe how they operate. I'm curious enough to admit that I'll be looking for the next in the series, too, as it was fun.
I always enjoy a cozy mystery with a unique theme and this does not disappoint. The theme is a painting party business run by two sisters. This is the second in series. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinion is my own.
Killing Them with Canvas is a fun Halloween theme read. Sisters Chloe and Izzy own a successful business of a art shop, Paint With A View in a small fictional town of Willow Shores on Chautauqua Lake. The morning after a painting class a woman is murdered and the sisters step up to their second murder investigation. I liked the unique theme of art in this series, the relationship between the sisters and the fun setting. The sleuth was well crafted and kept me guessing. A enjoyable fun cozy read.
