I always enjoy celebrity memoirs read by celebrities and this was no exception. Melissa Rivers does justice to her mom's over-the-top sense of humor as she recounts some of the outrageous tales her mother told her as she was growing up.
I adore (yes present tense) Joan Rivers. She’s just a badass. I met her once and she signed a picture for me. As my nickname has many spellings I gave her my birth name (it just happens to be Joan) she looked at me and asked if it was for my grandmother. I said no ma’am it’s for me. (I was 30 at the time) without missing a beat she said “sweetheart the only Joan’s I know are either old or dead”
This book (audiobook) is by her only daughter (a badass in her own right) and narrated by her as well. So many great stories that let you (kinda) know what it was like to be THE Joan Rivers daughter. I’m sad she’s no longer with us but her memory lives on and I’m so grateful for it.
I had to start this over a couple of times to decide whether I liked it or not. On the 2nd go round, I could appreciate the humor that Joan sent Melissa's way. I am one who liked Joan from the Tonight show with Johnny Carson. I give this 3 stars.

@melissariversofficial recounts stories and lies that her mother had told her. You absolutely must listen to this audio book. I don’t thing reading the words does it justice. You can hear the warmth and often just a touch of grief in Melissa’s words as she talks about her mother. Joan was unlike any other and getting to hear the stories (even if they were lies) made me miss her. This is a very fun beach listen to!

Lies My Mother Told Me is about the famous and memorialized comedian Joan Rivers. As a child I remember watching her on the red carpets and various other places. I wouldn’t say I was a fan, but also had no dislike for her. So upon starting this audiobook I was completely neutral and ready for a good laugh.
I guess the issue I had the most was that I did not find most of the jokes funny. I don’t think of myself as overly sensitive, but laughing about anything involving the holocaust, slavery, various famous people who have been murdered, and the Jews as a whole is just never something I will find acceptable. Also, I realize the book's title gives away that there would be some exaggerations but I honestly don’t know if anything in the entire book was true or if it was all made up, and my question to the author would be, who wants to listen to 6 hours of nonsense? Maybe I am missing the point and those who are huge fans will have a different opinion than me.
Melissa gives a good narration, and I found her humor to be funny sometimes, but when she would switch over to start telling another story her mother said, it just became ridiculous. It did give me a certain level of nostalgia to hear some of the stories and the way Joan Rivers lived, but that was about the only good I could pull from this one.
Can we talk? I loved Lies My Mother Told Me. Joan would be so proud of Melissa. I chuckled all the way through it1
Thank you #Netgalley for this audiobook!
So many laughable moments! I particularly liked the stories where Joan references Melissa's "brother". Also about growing up and better understanding different families, financial situations etc. Joan has so many stories and I love that Melissa is sharing them!
Thanks to Netgalley and RB Media for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
First, let me say I adored Joan Rivers and also really love Melissa. They are both so funny to me.
I think my hopes may have been too high for this book. Unfortunately, it just did not do it for me. I LOVED that it was narrated by Melissa. I would definitely listen to other audiobooks by her if she narrated them.
The stories just were not doing it for me. I was bored in some areas. Maybe I laughed once or twice? I hate to say it, but for the most part, this was just background noise for me when I was cleaning house.
This was so nostalgic and I could almost hear Joan Rivers voice as her daughter told these delightful and insightful stories. I loved it so much.
I hadn’t heard of Melissa Rivers, but when a friend mentioned that the daughter of the legendary comic, Joan Rivers, had an audio book nearing its publication date, I wanted it. My thanks go to Net Galley and RB Media for the review copy. This book is for sale now.
Joan Rivers was an icon, one of the first fierce women to breach the world of standup, an old boys club if ever there was one. She was scrappy, fearless, and very, very funny. Like all of the early women comics, she incorporated a good deal of self-deprecating humor, a defense against all of the nasty things that reviewers and audience members might throw at her, but she also made fun of the rich, the famous, and the powerful.
Joan died in 2016, and although she was eighty-one years old, news of her passing came as a shock. She hadn’t been ill, and had been admitted to a hospital for surgery of a fairly minor nature; her death was caused by errors made by the doctors and hospital. Her only child, Melissa, had been developing a standup career of her own, and now steps fully into the spotlight left vacant by her mother’s death.
I had never heard of Melissa or her work when I found this audio book, but I expected great things; often a talent is passed down within a family, after all. Sadly, there’s no joy to be had here. Melissa’s tone is grating and abrasive; whereas Joan sometimes veered in that direction, she had the skill and instincts that told her when to pull back or soften things. Joan’s trademark phrase, “Can we talk?” created a sense of intimacy, and drew me in. Melissa’s repels me. Apparently, I am not alone; I was playing this audiobook while preparing dinner, and when other family members came into the kitchen, they either wanted it turned off, or they left immediately. Nothing she said made any of us laugh, or even smile. Nothing. I have never heard a comic so obnoxious.
Wikipedia tells me that Melissa Rivers is known for her work in comedy, and for philanthropy, as heir to her parents’ considerable estate. I haven’t seen or heard any of Melissa’s other work, but if this book is representative, she might do better to focus on her charity work, brightening the world by embracing the causes dearest to her parents’ hearts, and her own.
Not recommended.
Melissa Rivers recounts stories, "lies" her mother told her throughout the years. Even though told through the lens of Melissa, Joan Rivers voice still shines through in these stories, although Melissa lacks the comedic timing of her mother. To be fair, Joan is the queen of comedy and it is next to impossible to compete with her. Fans of Joan will love reminiscing and hearing these stories, which Melissa narrates herself.
For anyone who watched their show on E!, or followed these ladies at all, it is clear that the love between them is so strong and they share an amazing bond. I really feel for Melissa in her loss and hope that in some way, sharing these stories was healing for her.
It is hard to rate a book that a daughter writes in memory of her passed mother, and so I will simply say, that I enjoyed this audiobook. Special thank you to Netgalley and RB Media for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed listening to this audio book. Melissa Rivers is a funny woman! Thank you for the opportunity.
Interesting and well written I just personally couldn’t get into the story. A little slow and unbelievable at some points. Narrators voice was not enjoyable and most stories were very offensive. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
🌟🌟💫
Well this was disappointing. JOAN RIVERS has such biting wit, it is sharper than a drag queen's tongue and that is why so many adore her.
Melissa feels like she is trying too hard. HONEY stop! Find your own path and get out of hiding like your dead mother's shadow.
I kept waiting and waiting for something. Rarely found it. Thank god that I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I've always been a huge fan of Joan Rivers so I was really looking forward to listening to Melissa River's new book of her mom Joan's funny stories. Sadly it's just not good. I didn't find it very funny at all. It seemed forced and the jokes fell flat. You could hear Joan in them, but they just didn't work. Not sure if it's cause too much may have been written by Melissa Rivers and whoever was probably her ghostwriter. I've read other books Melissa has put out about her mom and enjoyed those. This one just didn't work for me. I had high hopes that listening to Melissa as the narrator for the audiobook would be great, but even that couldn't persuade me to like the book. In fact, I had to speed up the audio just to quickly get to the end.
Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for the Advance Review Copy.

I listened to the audiobook on this one, and I highly recommend doing that so you understand the humor of the book.
I have a very dry sarcastic humor so I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. Joan rivers was a little out of my speed because of my generation but I always watched her on E and found her hilarious when most found her annoying. What I did enjoy was the fact that you didn’t have to know these two people at all, but could still come away laughing at this book no matter what.
The concept of this book was great and I enjoyed the laugh it gave me multiple times. I would recommend it to anyone needing a good belly laugh!

Lies My Mother Told Me: Tall Tales from a Short Woman was a great read by Melissa Rivers. This book contains some stories that Joan told to her daughter Melissa throughout her life. Joan had the motto “Why let the truth ruin a good story?” The one thing she loved more than making people laugh was lying. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
I received an audio copy of Lies My Mother Told Me in exchange for an honest review. I have not read any of the other books Melissa has written about her mother Joan Rivers. This book is written in much the same way that Joan talked. If you were a fan of Joan Rivers you will enjoy this book. Like Joan the book has funny but crude stories laced with profanity.
Wow… so Joan holds a special spot in my heart. She reminds me of being young and spending time with my Mom. My Mom loved her. So I was very excited to listen to this audio. This one was a little hard for me to get into… it’s sad to think if it was Joan herself it would have been more enjoyable. You really have to know Joan’s humor to not feel offended. I think lifelong fans will enjoy but if your new to the Queen of humor then this one may not be for them.
I'm so glad Melissa Rivers decided to write this book about her mom, Joan Rivers. Her fans miss her and I can only imagine how her own family and loved ones feel. This is such a tribute to the Joan we all love, it must've been hard to write this book during the pandemic and being an empty nester, but Melissa persevered and I'm thankful for it. Lies My Mother Told Me is full of laughter and joy for the late great Joan Rivers, it's like she was reading us the book but it's just Melissa carrying her mother's legacy and her comedic knack. Love this book! Love Joan and Melissa!
