This series is so much fun to read. This is a book 4, so there could be spoilers from the other books below.
In this book, the big mystery is a missing ship. The Persephone went down ten years earlier and no one was heard from. No one knows what happens. But a young girl is Australia found some items after her father passed away. There were weird boat items and a locket with a photo that looks like her, but with two people she didn't know. She comes to England to try to find out the truth. Could she be the missing child from the Persephone? If she is, she stands to inherit a lot of money. Myrtle and Miss Judson work together through most of the book because Myrtle's father was in the hospital. He says he saw a murder, but no one really believes him since he was on pain medication. He couldn't speak, but tried to communicate. While looking into a possible murder at the hospital, Myrle and Miss Judson start finding clues as to what happened to the Persephone.
I really liked that Cook had a bigger part in this one. She was a great addition. Sally and Charlie were sweet. I wasn't sure, but I actually really liked the hospital setting. The pacing was great like all the other books.
I gave this book 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5 on Goodreads.
Thank you to Algonquin Young Readers for sending me a finished copy for review.
This was another glorious entry in the Myrtle Hardcastle mystery series and I look forward to the next book in the series. Myrtle and her "crew" have become one of my favorite fictional gangs to spend time with and I spend through the reading of this book - the only disadvantage is that I will have to wait longer for the next installment. Myrtle is a twelve year old who considers herself an Investigator. Having helped solve three previous mysteries she finds herself, yet again, in the middle of another. The "Rear Window" quality of the mystery was spot on, poor Arthur in the hospital after surgery witnesses a murder, but without a body, everyone believes it was a figment of his drug-addled state. If he did witness a murder, who is the victim and where is the body? The other mystery is if Sally Cooke is the long lost heiress Ethel Snowcroft, who disappeared with her parents on the ship, Persephone, headed for the Antipode. I love this aspect of the story as there are so many mysterious disappearances of ships during this time period, so it was fitting to add this fictional ship disappearance to the mix. I would highly recommend anyone interested in reading mysteries to give this series a chance - and it is a must that you start from the very beginning with Premediated Myrtle.
