A story with many twists and turns and the ending was good. Didn't see that one coming. Slightly slow start but I did manage to find it gripping enough to finish it in a day.
Though some things are too descriptive and repetitive, maybe they were meant to throw the reader off track. I was second guessing towards the end.
Dani is dealing with the aftermath of her accident which has left her with facial blindness and also resulted in her twin suffering from a spinal injury. Things move too fast when she is discharged from the hospital and her husband Tate has already got a new born baby girl adopted. But there are layers that are hidden and things don't make sense to Dani. She turns to her sister Shelby, who she talks to on the phone for advice. Finally Dani realises that Tate isn't who she thought he was and she almost has another breakdown finding out the truth.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC
This is my first experience with this author, so I didn’t know quite what to expect. The premise of this story was so interesting, I found myself quite disappointed throughout the first half. It moved so slowly & much of it was just repetition. The second half was much better as the tension built and things finally started moving along. The ending was pretty satisfying and overall it was a decent read.
“The Adoption” is a mystery/thriller by Jenna Kernan. This was a rather quick read, but I have mixed emotions about the overall book. While I find “face blindness” interesting, this fact (and explanation) seemed to be repeated a lot. Other reviewers have noted that other information was repeated and I wholeheartedly agree with their statements. As for the twists, except for a minor one, I saw most of the twists coming earlier in the book. The last third of the book seemed to move at a rather fast clip, which was great, but also since the first half was slow, I wish that the action had been spread out more evenly. I wanted to enjoy this book more than I did; I think a smoother story flow would’ve helped a lot. However, saying that, I’d give another book by this author a try.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. This book is definitely a hard one to review. The first half of the book was so slow that I almost gave up on it. The second half of the book was so fast moving that it was hard to keep up with it.
Dani is in a horrible car accident with her twin sister Shelby which causes Dani to have a blindness to face recognition and other mental issues. Her husband, Tate, always wears a yellow shirt so that she can recognize him. When she is released from a psychiatric facility and finds out that she will never be able to have a baby, her husband takes care of it and adopts a baby in a few days.
She is on so much medicine that nothing wakes her up at night so Tate takes care of the baby at night. But in the morning, it seems suspicious to her that Tate is always taking a walk in the morning when she gets up and always runs into their neighbor Enid.
Dani catches her husband is so many lies and feels like her psychiatrist is lying about things too. A strange woman keeps following her and coming to her house wanting the baby.
This book definitely makes you question what is real and what is Dani's imagination.
Wow. This book was really, really good and it had me on my toes the entire time! I can’t wait to add a physical copy to my library!
I thought both the title and the synopsis of this book were misleading. The adoption is almost an afterthought that doesn't even feature until about half way through the book. I thought the story which was basically more about Dani who had been in a serious car accident and who had developed a condition whereby she could not recognise faces. She had subsequently had a breakdown and had had to spend time in a psychiatric hospital. This won't spoil the book for anyone as we learn all of this by the end of chapter one. It was an ok story and there were a couple of good twists but ultimately I had expected a lot more.
I really enjoyed this book. The very end was a twist I didn't expect. There was only one thing that bothered me about it. The way certain things that were irrelevany kept getting brought up, Like the fact that there was a three-car garage, but they only had two in there. Just seemed liked a weird thing to keep saying. The story itself was great, though.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the arc of The Adoption for an honest review feedback, I really had high hopes going into this book, but unfortunately for me, it fell short. The concept of the book is really good, however, I felt as though the book was repetitive in some areas and dragged on for awhile, I just wanted the story to "get to the point" I think there may be certain readers that will enjoy this book, but unfortunately this book was not for me.
I want to say thank you again to NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read The Adoption.
To begin with I wasn't loving this book or really liking it that much at all. What irritated me was the repetitive details being told over and over again. How Dani is feeling after the accident and her guilt, like you would read a bit of the plot, Dani is home now and things are moving on, for a couple of pages and then it would revert back to her accident and guilt. Her mind never stopped wandering back. It was draining and it took away from any actual plot and therefore it was very slow moving.
As a reader, you clearly have an idea where this story is going, her husband is clearly up to something, possibly cheating on her and using her accident and injuries as a cover, making her out to be silly or imagining things. I'd like to think that prior to the accident Dani wouldn't have been so gullible. She did really irritate me with the way she believed everything she was told and to see her doubt herself was horrible. But the girl was suffering with a brain injury.
However, come the second half of the book and it really starts to pick up the pace, we no longer are being subjected to so much of Dani's guilt and feelings and I really started to enjoy the book then. So much so I couldn't willingly put it down. It just got twistier and weirder and there was clearly so much more going on that Dani had no clue about and we the readers are only discovering the closer to the end.
The last part was amazingly done I think, it really made me feel so sorry for Dani and just wanted to see her triumph and finally have someone on her side. That little twist at the end was excellent and as sad as it was and not the happy ever after for all concerned, I'm glad the way it ended. It was just right, sad, but right.
I would highly recommend this book and want to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
If you are looking for a book with lots of twists, turns, and secrets, The Adoption is the book for you. Jenna Kernan does an excellent job of keeping the reader wondering what is going to happen next. I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an early copy to review.
This book started off very slowly and far too repetitive in my opinion. The story did speed up in the second half of the book but I'm still not sure that I would say that I really enjoyed it
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC
I really don’t know what to say. It’s a little hard to describe but I will try. It is told in only one point of view except a couple a pages. Have tissues close by. I haven’t cried reading a book in a very long time but this had been bawling. This is the first time reading this author and I will check out her other books.
Dani was in a car wreck, along with her twin sister. She is not able to have children. She has a nervous breakdown and is hospitalized. When she is released, her husband Tate, lawyer and judge, takes her home. Within a day or two, he brings home a baby girl. Tate convinces Dani that he hurried the adoption process and was given the baby. But strange things start to happen that could tear this family apart.
I know this is short but I could not put it down.

Thank you Bookouture and Net Galley for the ARC of this book. This is my first time reading this author and won’t be my last. I really enjoyed this book. I read it in a day which I don’t usually do. I kept turning pages to see what would happen next. I was really drawn to Dani’s character and felt sad about the state she was in and what was real to her. Lots of twist to the very end.
I would highly recommend.
This book was so deceiving. The chapters were way way too long. There was no hook to grab me and I almost stopped reading. When I saw other reviews that said you have to skip to the middle, I did that. I would say only the last 20% of this book is any good. Lots of shocks although it seemed too busy. The book felt like it was always going a million ways and not organized well. The description does not match the book very well. Unfortunately I cannot recommended this one.
Woah! What a novel!
Jenna Kernan can weave a story, drawing the reader into a dark and disturbing world of compelling intrigue and shuddering outcomes.
I loved the tight writing and the author’s voice.
The Adoption is a fantastic page turner, full of twist and turns.
A thriller that keeps you guessing until the end.
This book was fast paced, gripping, entertaining, dramatic and just all round amazing.
The writing is fabulous, had me feeling every single moment of fear, unease, and creepiness.
Dani and Tate are very intriguing, interesting characters, and they Dani's story pulled me straight into her world.
This book is definitely a one or two sitting read. It was for me. A true edge of your seat suspenseful read.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
Bookouture,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
I will post my review to my platforms, blog, B&N and Waterstone closer to pub date.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookstore for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dani has just been released from a psychiatric hospital after suffering a head injury in a car accident that left her sister paralyzed. Shortly after her return home, Dani's husband Tate tells her they are adopting a baby right away even though due to Dani's stay in the mental hospital, she should not qualify for a traditional adoption. Dani starts to wonder if this is on the up and up.
The book started really slow. I think the accident was rehashed for the first 40%. Then the adoption happened and nothing made sense. Clearly things were wrong but Dani had difficulty piecing it together due to her weak mental state. Also, Dani suffered from face blindness which I have seen popping up in a lot of novels and I am over this storyline. Anyway once this one picked up it got super convoluted and Dani's husband changed his story for much that I don't even think I know what the truth was after finishing the book. Overall a pretty disappointing read that started with an interesting premise but took too long to get going the went off the rails. I really like the Nadine Finch series and this one was not at all on par with that unfortunately.
Very interesting read, very repetitive to begin with. And it felt almost as if it lost its way. But halfway through it picked up. Then there was no stopping it. Very well written in the 2nd half. Interesting plot. Well worth a read
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Bookouture and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
What a delightful read full of surprises. I found it impossible to put down.
This is such a brilliant book, I truly couldn’t read it quick enough. It’s tense, fast paced with so many twists and possibilities. Really liked the protagonist but found her husband Tate one of those people in need of a slap or two 🤣🤣
This really sucked me in, so much so I read the last half in one evening. I shall be looking out for more by Jenna
