Well that was perfection. The sweetest story of a girl and her grandmother. There are very few words, gorgeous storytelling through the illustrations. Simply so sweet

I love silent graphic novels and this is no exception. There is something so magical about a book in which your imagination gets to be the author! This book follows a girl who gets told a story about a found egg, and how that story sets her imagination going.

The illustrations need to be extra evocative in a work like this, and Guojing doesn't disappoint! The soft edges give everything a dreamy look and reading this feels just like a dream!

Thank you to Guojing, Random House Children's, and #NetGalley for the opportunity to read this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.

I was so taken by this graphic novel by Guojing. The illustrations are so soft and striking all at once. They told the story of this little girl and her grandmother so exquisitely. This is such a lovely piece of art, and definitely not just for children to enjoy.
5 out of 5 stars

I LOVE stories without words. The skill of an illustrator shines when the we must rely on pictures to give us the narrative. It may not be fair to call this a "silent" book, since there are only 8 sentences spread across 76 pages. I found this to be a bit clunky. I would have preferred either more text or none at all, but that's just a personal preference. The perspectives, pacing, and expressions are beautifully done. This is a book that can be enjoyed over and over again.

WOW! A beautiful story-told mostly through illustrations about a little girl and a flamingo. The reader will notice new things about this story each time they read it. It is incredible what a thorough story the author tells with very limited text. A perfect graphic novel for both the very young and older readers as well!

Thank you to the publisher and Net Galley for the advance e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is beautifully illustrated wordless graphic novel. The details are amazing and the color palate throughout the story. BUT... I feel like it needed some more words? Or would be a great wordless picture book instead? Needs more reads.

Absolutely, 100% stunningly beautiful. I became a fan of Guojing when her book, Stormy, got sent to me through a library subscription service of which I am a member. This book, though longer than Stormy, is no less impressive. With sparse text whose sole function is just to allow the reader to distinguish between the present action, and the story Lao Lao is telling, The Flamingo is a sweeping tale of family and imagination. I loved how Guojing used color to her advantage, keeping the current storyline in shades of gray, with only the salmony flamingo color showing, while the story Lao Lao was telling, was vibrant and bright. It allows the reader to decide for him/herself whether or not he/she believes Lao Lao's story about the flamingo to be true. In any event, the ending that the granddaughter designed for the story was also the perfect ending for the book, and I will definitely be purchasing this for my library.

I loved this graphic novel for three main reasons: 1. the black and white color palette with the addition of one color: flamingo pink, 2. the minimal use of words: there were maybe 5 lines throughout the whole graphic novel, 3. the magic and whimsy added into the end of the novel.

1. Anyone who loves flamingo will LOVE this graphic novel - there are hidden and not so hidden flamingos throughout the entire novel! There are flamingo details in the decor, on clothes and even in the details on the bicycle. The use of flamingo pink makes the panels pop.

2. This is the most visual graphic novel I have had the pleasure of viewing. I love that the majority of the story is communicated without words. I already have a ton of ideas of how graphic novels of this nature could be used in the classroom!

3. While the story's heart is the grandma as a child finding a flamingo egg and hatching it, I love the mirrored activities with her granddaughter. I also LOVE the ending: it truly soars.

If you love flamingos, the color pink or a sweet story, this graphic novel is for you!

I cannot wait to hold this book in my hands. The illustrations are so dreamy and practically jump off the page. Yet another gorgeous graphic novel to add to our library's collection come publishing day. The format lends itself to the younger readers, but the message will be appreciated by older readers as well. I don't doubt this will be an extremely popular book!

<b> The Flamingo <b> is a Children's picture book

First off, the cover is enchanting. The illustrations and artwork remind me of Kellogg and other authors from the 90s.

Within the pages we follow a grandmother and her granddaughter who is learning the story of the little girl and the flamingo. It's a captivating story that showcases the love and connection between the little girl and the flamingo. When the granddaughter flies home back to the city, she still holds the flamingo feather she was given and begins to illustrate and tell her own version of the flamingo story, sending this to her grandmother.

At the end, I felt that the relationship between the two of them is the flamingo. They have to fly far during different "seasons" to see each other, but they are always connected by love.

5 Stars. Would recommend. I would recommend this for a bit older children who can understand and enjoy this format of children's picture book being that it's also a graphic novel. By having the story produced in this fashion it really gave us an inside look at the character's emotions and feelings which I loved.

Also, all of those illustrations of dumplings and food looked quite yummy!

Magical, enchanting...breathtaking!

The illustrations in this graphic novel, The Flamingo, are outstanding and dreamlike. The story is told with few words and many astounding images. The story tells of the love between a granddaughter and her grandmother, the love between a young girl and a flamingo and a girl and her powerful imagination.

Refreshing and heartwarming.

Grateful to have received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley & Random House Children's, Random House Studio.

Beautifully illustrated. Characters have anime style faces but the rest of the illustrations are wonderfully done. The book only has a handful of sentences in it so it’s a story told through pictures as opposed to words. Lovely story about a girl visiting her grandmother and learning about a flamingo. Interesting concept. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy.

The Flamingo is a beautifully illustrated title bringing to life the story of a girl and the magical visit she has with her grandma, Lao Lao. The visit at the is full of fun discoveries, including a feather that brings the story of a flamingo and wonder.

Truly a beautiful book that made me cry. We lost my Grandmother last year, and she loved pink flamingos. Each of our families homes have little shrines of Pink Flamingo memorabilia in her memory, so I knew when I saw this book that I had to read it, but had no idea the subject matter or that it involved a Grandmother in Pink Flamingo pajamas, much like the memory of my own. Though there are few words in the book, they are not missed because the illustrations tell such a gorgeous and magical tale of the love between a grandmother and grandchild and the stories that are passed on. Also, an exposure to the reality of how quickly time passes, and the memories that are fostered between a grandmother and granddaughter. The colors and detail in each picture is told with such care. Truly magical. I cannot thank Guojing enough for bringing me this comfort as I grieve for my own Lao Lao. Truly Excellent and beautiful! FIVE STARS.

This is a graphic novel about a girl who, while visiting her grandmother, finds a pink feather and asks to hear the story. What she hears is a story of adventure and fun and friendship. I loved this so much! The art was BEAUTIFUL! I loved the color choices so much. There were very few words in this, but that meant that you had to make the story up in your head! It was so beautiful, I recommend it to everyone!

I was given an advanced reader's copy via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own
